Description
On April 28, 2010, Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith revealed that residential recycling tonnages during the first ten weeks since the single stream program began on February 1, 2010 reflect an increase in recycling of 33% when assessed against the comparable period last year. This percentage increase brought the level of recycling collection up to an average of 929 tons per week. Smith also announced that the new single stream program has contributed to a 4% decrease in residential trash tonnages, thus conserving the County's landfill space.
B
C
It's
been
extraordinarily
successful
in,
in
the
first
run,
recycling
has
increased
33
in
baltimore
county
and
the
trash
collection
has
gone
down,
four
percent,
which
is
which
is
really
extraordinary,
and
yet,
as
you
can
see
behind
me,
we
still
have
more
progress
to
make.
But
it's
really
been
a
a
wonderful
response
of
the
people
of
baltimore
county.
It's
demonstrated
their
their
their
commitment
to
the
environment,
and-
and
it
has
also
proven
that
single
stream
is
the
way
to
go.
It's
easy
to
do.
It's
convenient
and
people
use
it.
I
mean
there.
C
There
are
significant
in
increases
in
the
recycling
as
a
result
of
going
to
single
stream.
C
Single
stream
is,
you
can
put
bottles
and
cans
and
paper
and
boxes
all
in
together.
You
don't
have
to
separate
anything
out.
You
don't
have
to
store
stuff
from
week
to
week,
because
only
one
is
being
collected.
It's
collected
every
week.
Everything
can
go
into
one
container,
you
can
use
the
34
gallon
or
less
containers
for
for
the
recycling
or
you
can
use
a
trash.
C
Can
that
you
mark
with
an
x
or
put
recycling
on
it
or
get
a
sticker
from
from
the
library
or
a
senior
center,
and
and
and
it
just
allows
you
to
to
do
everything
each
week
and
and
frankly,
you'll
have
very
little
trash
because
everything,
it's
amazing
how
much
of
your
trash
are
recyclables,
and
so
it
you
know,
that's
going
to
be
your
big
put
out
each
week
and
and
not
your
trash
once
you
really
get
into
it.
B
D
Well,
this
single
stream
recycling
has
been
such
a
great
success.
It
saves
the
taxpayers
a
lot
of
money
because
we
are
reducing
our
costs
for
landfills,
we're
extending
the
life
of
our
landfills.
D
As
long
as
we
make
it
nice
and
easy
like
we
are
doing
now,
people
want
to
participate
and
I
really
look
forward
to
us
not
only
being
the
leaders
in
the
region
but
being
leaders
in
the
country
for
recycling
for
a
county
our
size.
I
think
we've
made
great
progress
and
I
really
look
forward
to
continuing
the
effort
that
we've
made
so
far.
Okay,.
B
A
A
You
know
the
success
of
our
single
stream
program
and
what
it's
having
here
in
baltimore
county,
because
there's
only
so
much
room
and
we're
really
not
going
to
be
able
to
find
places
to
put
more
landfills.
So
we
have
to
make
use
of
what
we
have
and
the
success
of
this
program.
It's
not
about
any
of
us
standing
here,
but
it's
because
of
the
citizens
of
baltimore
county
who've
made
it
the
success
that
it
is
today.
