They say that age is just a number, and that you re as young as you feel..

So in keeping with that line of thinking, the theme for this year, s senior baby, boomer expo,, sponsored by the baltimore county department of aging,, is "discover the power of age." over the next 30 minutes,.
We ll introduce you to some local businesses who are trying to help.
You do just that.
A
If you re thinking to yourself,, I d really like to 'discover the power of age,'.
But how do I do it?”.
A
Well, one way is through the baltimore county department of aging.
A
Their purpose is to enhance the lives of baby boomers and seniors alike.

Help

maintain the lives of older adults, so that they can remain

Independent members of the community here in baltimore

We re charged with serving a whole spectrum of individuals.

From the younger senior,, the 55, 65, 75-year-old,.

And even into their 80s, 90s,, and we have a few folks.

Who are in their 100s that we serve.
B
We re very proud to operate 20 senior centers in baltimore county,.
B
And each senior center represents the community in which it is located,.
B
So they re not canned activities.

There s an awful lot available to seniors that most people don t realize.

People come here to dance,, they come here to sing,.
D
They come here to watch tv,.
They come here to do almost anything.

Joanne:, you can come into a senior center and participate in.
B
Everything from exercise classes.
B

joanne: to taking a conversational spanish class that is taught.

By our local community college right in our senior center.
B
You can participate in a nutrition program.
B
We have many different lectures about hot topics.
B
That are of interest to older adults.
B
We do many different health screenings.
B
We have partnerships with local hospitals., you can come in and get your blood pressure screened.
B
We even have a process where we ve done.
Kidney screenings.
B
Right on site in the senior centers., so there s a lot of good information to help an individual.
B
Maintain a healthy lifestyle right in our senior center.

I plan my personal things around my schedule, with bykota,.

Or how I get help at bykota.

It s just a great experience.

It's family to me,, you know?, and it could be for anybody.

And it s a one-stop shop for the first time user of department of aging services,.

Or for anyone who s accustomed to coming to us for service.

When you walk through that door,.

All your questions can be answered., whatever situation, legal,, nutrition,, exercise,, transportation,.
Anything.

They can help you and give you all kinds of information.

They re a very caring team., they re very knowledgable, and they re here to help you.

The senior centers and the senior programs conducted by.

The department of aging,, as far as I m concerned,, they re the best in the state of maryland,, if not the country.,.

When I get up in the morning,, I look forward to coming up here, and I m walking in the door, and it s, hi everybody!”, so friendly.
just meeting so many nice people, all ages.

It s just a good feeling to see seniors stay active,.

Socialize with other seniors,, and it s just a pleasure to see them do that.

Oh,, it makes it fun to be a senior.

The baltimore county department of aging is able to offer many of the great programs you just saw because of its army of volunteers,, more than 1,200 strong.

Those volunteers will be out in force at the baby, boomer senior expo,.
