Mass Transportation

Our next question for cabin is from Maria from timonium who asks what steps are you taking with the state to improve mass transit with in Baltimore County memory? As you know, the state Maryland Transit Administration is responsible for public transportation and we certainly partner with them as much as possible to ensure that Baltimore County residents have the best mass transit options possible.

I, guess part of our frustration is that the the Baltimore Beltway was planned in the 1950s and constructed starting in 1962 that circles around the Beltway, but all the highway patterns were utilized to send people from the suburbs to downtown Baltimore.

In hindsight, of course, it would have been great if we had realized that today's commuting patterns are really circling within the Beltway from different parts of the county, and it would have been nice if we had set aside a loop for mass transit to go around the Beltway as well.

Today, unfortunately, there's not the physical room and more significantly, we don't have the finances to accomplish that goal, but we are trying to work with the MTA on a variety of projects, including the red line, which is a 14-mile, east-west transit line that connects Woodlawn to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus, and we predict an average daily ridership of 59 thousand people which will reduce strain on our highways and our roads.

Obviously, the recession is course all levels of government to tighten their belts, so we can't get to do everything we like, but I'm, certainly open to any ideas or suggestions that any citizen may have that we can achieve greater success with mass transit and Maria. You also sent some suggestions to improve mass transit in the county and I want to let you know we have passed those thoughts along to our County Department of Public Works.
