We'll meet artist and educator, linda popp.,.
A
And then, we'll get smarter with some beautiful art dolls.
A
By baltimore county artist, sandra street.
A
there's a lot ahead,.
So let's get started.
A
It's not every day we get to celebrate a 150th birthday,.
A
But smarts now has the chance to toast towson university on this milestone.
A
Through the decades,, the arts and humanities have been central.
A
To the university's academic programs,, as well as an important part of our cultural community.,.
A
We have with us louise miller, executive director of the towson university 150th celebration.
A
Welcome to smarts!, you are so busy!.
B
Well, there's a lot going on to celebrate 150 years.
A
Yeah,, so where do you even start?.
B
Well,, we actually put together a focus group.
B
And we actually have a steering committee and nine planning committees,.
A
Because we're so celebrating for an entire year.
B
Oh my goodness!
and we're almost halfway: through.
B
( laughing ) congratulations!.
A
Thank you.
B
But, you know,, we've been in baltimore county for 100 years.
A
Oh, okay, so..., oh, interesting.
B
So, give us a little history on the anniversary., so our first 50 years were downtown.
B
And we moved to towson in 1915,, where the university purchased 88 acres.
B
So, stevens hall --, the current stevens hall --.
B
Was the administration building back then.
B
lovely,, beautiful building.
A
A hundred years old --, along with newell,.
B
Which was the dorms, and the plant,, the electrical plant.
B
And those were the three buildings,, the three original buildings.
A
You've come a long, way, baby,, huh?, yes!
wow!, so how many students attend towson now?.
B
We have a little over 22,000., wow!
yes.
and while we started as the teacher's college,.
B
Our college of health professions is now the largest college.
B
We produce one in four nurses for the state of maryland.
A
Do you really?
yes.
wow,, that's impressive.,.
B
Also, our doctorial programs,, the first ones,, were in the college of health professions..
B
There's a big demand.
yeah.
now you're also known for arts and humanities.
A
Yes, big program.
and you reach out into the community in many ways.
A
yes, we do.
yeah.
B
Well, we also produce maybe a hundred--.
B
Over a hundred performances, exhibitions, lectures, --.
B
Many of them free, open to the public.
B
This year,, we have center stage on campus,, which was very exciting.
A
How exciting!.
B
They're renovating their theatre..
B
We also do a lot in the community.
B
for instance, ailey ii,, the dance company,.
B
When they come in for their performances,, we bring in baltimore county--.
B
Bus baltimore county students in for free performances.
B
Terrific!, many of them have never been on a college campus or seen a live performance.
A
Oh,, that's a fabulous opportunity., it really is.
A
it's the kind of thing I remember being a young student --, it's a seminal moment and something that really can change a student's, life.
A
Yeah, really very much.
so, all right,, so I know that the university's doing a lot of different things.
--.
A
Every department, every discipline -- for the 150th., but since this is an arts...
and culture show,.
A
I'd love to know what's happening specifically in those terms,.
A
As far as the celebration.
B
Well, again, every college is doing something individually.
B
One of the things that is happening is there's a speaker series.
B
Okay.
and each college is bringing in a visiting speaker.
B
they're doing master classes,, but then they're also doing something that's open to the public.
B
In the fall, we had four speakers.
B
One was ira, flatow., oh,, sure!.
A
Yes, that was wonderful.
oh, gosh..
I love him.
B
He spoke on how science is sexy, now,, which was great.
B
And so we have three in the spring, and they're very diverse, from--.
B
The college of fine arts is bringing in dj spooky.
B
Oh!
yes, yes...
A
For those of us who are not as hip as you are,, who is dj, spooky?.
B
So, he does a lot of turntable music...
B
Yeah.
and there will be a performance- that's open to the public,.
B
But he'll also be giving master classes.
B
he's a producer, he's a composer -- really exciting speaker for us in the arts.
B
The college of liberal arts actually has written an anthology,.
B
Has produced an anthology as part of what they're doing.
B
So writings by alumni, all put into a book--.
B
Oh, wonderful!
...published by our students.
B
They have their own publishing company, and it's called "amid.
The roar".
A
And it's available on amazon for a whopping ยค5.
B
( laughter ) a book most people can afford.
B
So, yeah,, so the college of fine arts is actually doing a collaboration with all the departments.
B
Which is something they don't get to do.
Normally.
B
So, peter wrey,, a faculty member in theatre,.
B
Has actually written a piece called "dance on bones.".
B
I'm not sure of the title.
B
But it'll bring in all of the different disciplines,.
B
So art, music, film, theatre.
B
It's pretty exciting!.
A
Yeah, well this--.
I mean, the list is endless.
A
we're putting up a website, of course, where people can go, get all the information, but--.
Thank you.
So much.
A
best wishes to you and congratulations on a job.
Well, done, louise.,.
A
I appreciate it.
thanks so much.
so, on campus or off,.
We invite you to take advantage of all the arts and culture experiences in the baltimore area,.
A
And here are some ideas for your calendar.
