A look at the Axis Dance company.

Narrator: contemporary dance,, it's the freedom of movement and expression.

A

But for one dance, company, there's a twist.

A

they're blending dancers with and without physical disabilities.

Axis dance company is a physically integrated dance company.

B

Based in oakland, california., the company specializes in three pillars: artistry, education and advocacy.

B

This residency is part of the baltimore county dance celebration month.

C

And this is part of the baltimore county commission on arts and sciences.

C

Each year, we bring in a national company.

C

To represent baltimore county and all the wonderful things we do with dance.

C

Lani: I joined axis about a year and a half ago.

B

I'd say that more and more, I've loved the work that we do.

B

We work on artistry and education.

B

So me being a dancer, I get to perform in a variety of theaters.

B

But also get to engage with the communities that we're visiting.

C

Karen: dance is something that is integral to us as human beings.

C

We all move., no matter how we move, everyone moves., so everybody can be a part of it..

C

Dance is inclusive rather than exclusive..

C

So having this company come and share all of their dancing ability with us,.

C

The fact that there are men and women of different ages,.

C

The fact that we had children from fourth graders,.

C

Eight, nine-year-olds, ten-year-olds, to high school students.

C

Who were able to experience this together and see everything that dance can do.

A

Narrator: and for the students,, it just wasn't a sit-and-watch event.

A

As they, too were engaged in feeling the mind and body connection to dance.

Trini: I like there is a lot of handicapped people.

D

Who could start doing dancing as a job.

D

And I think it's really inspiring for others.

D

Lani:, it's important for the kids to take away that message.

B

That everybody is unique and has something to say.

B

And for the kid to be the advocate.
