With me in the studio is an artist whose work is inspired.

By her heritage,, her family, and her love of life.

Sandra street is a baltimore county artist who calls her works. "Diva dolls.".

A

Once you see them,, you might call her dolls "visionary.".

A

Good to see you! thank you for having me. so sandra,. I want to ask you, what inspired you?.

We're going to take a look at some of the dolls that you've created.

B

they're magnificent!. What inspired you specifically to create this doll?.

B

Well,, I am a child of the 60s and during that time,.

B

We had the civil rights era,, you had the african-american women.

B

Very proud of their heritage, and you also have them wearing their big afros.

B

Okay., that's one reason why she's called "sister doll." okay, and she is magnificent.. Now what kind of material does that-- do you use to make her hair there??

B

Her hair is made from yarn. oh!

B

a textured yarn. okay,, it's beautiful!.

B

Thank you! and so that outfit is supposed to look a little bit more like something you'd see in the 60s? yes, indeed. you have the african kente cloth and you have the denim skirts.

B

I love it! okay,. Let's look at the next doll.

B

this--. I think this doll has some incredibly interesting textures.

B

And materials you used. so,, what is it made? Of?

B

okay, she's handmade of course, and she's made from cloth,.

B

And I've used many recycled items to embellish her outfit.

A

We have used discarded, jewelry,, leather, and fabrics.

A

That have been donated to me from friends and family.

A

Okay, and so are you-- when you're out and about,.

A

Do you see something and say, "oh,? That would make a perfect material for my dolls?".

A

Without a doubt! I will save fabric, beads, jewelry, whatever.

A

And what I normally do is take it home with me,.

A

Put it into my studio, and wait for an idea to come.

A
