Take a look at Historic Hampton behind the scenes with the curator.

We're in the drawing room at hampton national historic site,, where one of our most unusual and colorful items on display.

A

Are our painted window shades.

A

now, painted window shades were actually very fashionable.

A

In the early 19th century to the end of the century,.

A

And they very seldom survive today.

A

But we're very lucky here at hampton that 16 original historic shades do survive.

A

We've been able to copy a group of four of those shades.

A

For use here in the drawing room., we actually know that this particular pattern was used here.

A

On the basis of 19th-century photographs of the room.

A

The painted shades show fanciful scenes that feature tropical palm trees.

A

And lush foliage and flowers, and of course,.

A

Most notably, a number of exotic birds.

A

The one here, we see a very brilliant peacock,.

A

But there are also pheasants and birds of paradise.

A

And all sorts of unusual and exotic creatures.

A

Are depicted on this particular group of painted window shades.

A

The ridgely family bought their window shades both locally here in baltimore.

A

They ordered some from philadelphia,, but they also purchased a set of four from france in 1850,.

A

And we believe that the set of shades here in the drawing room.

A
