dayna starts the show with information about bcda's. First 50plus virtual expo.

Dayna, welcome to the show.. Thank you for having me,.

And thank you for giving me the chance to talk about this new and exciting event.

B

Let's begin by sharing why the power of age expo.

A

Normally held annually in october at the maryland state, fairgrounds had to be re-imagined.

A

all right, well.

B

First of all,, I think we would all agree that 2020 has certainly not been a usual year.

B

It's been filled with so many unprecedented and newsworthy,.

B

And unexpected events and the coronavirus epidemic, certainly being at the forefront of that.

B

That forced us to make changes not only to the power of age, expo,.

B

But a lot of other programs in advanced that we've offered this year.

B

Certainly, as a result of covid-19 with.

B

An abundance of caution to protecting public health,.

B

This event, like so many others across the county, across the state,.

B

And across the country, had to either be canceled or changed dramatically.

B

This is actually the first time in our 32 years.

B

That an in-person expo at the fairgrounds had to be canceled.

B

Again,, it forced us to really re-imagine how we're looking at expo and.

B

Re-Designing it in a way that's going to continue to support the older adults and caregivers. We serve,.

B

And also, importantly, to continue to support the businesses, and programs,.

B

And products, and services that we like to offer to.

B

Them to help people continue to live their best, life.

B

Dayna, with expo as a 50plus virtual expo, this year,.

A

Can you share information about bcda's partners for this event and how the benefit is for those partnerships?.

A

I'm excited to let you-all know that our partners this year are.

B

The beacon newspaper and howard county's office on aging and independence.

B

All three of us have held in-person annual expos for many years,.

B

Usually that run one or two days, and being able to offer this for three months and doing it together has just turned out to be a win-win for everybody.

B

Our 50plus virtual expo offers specific benefits.

A

Can you share those benefits with our viewing audience?, certainly, and first of all,.

B

During these times with covid-19,, probably the best benefit of doing this.

B

Virtually is that we're maintaining public safety,.

B

Which has been a top priority, not only for baltimore county government,, but for us at bcda.

B

Especially, for our constituency, which are older adults, who are probably more susceptible,.

B

But the covid-19 virus is definitely more.

B

Problematic for our constituency due to age and.

B

For a lot of people, pre-existing health conditions.

B

As a virtual event,, we're not only continuing to support the people, we serve,.

B

But we're also helping to support those businesses and.

B

Programs and products out there that are available to serve them.

B

Typically,, like I said, our expo, and that of our partners runs one or two days.

B

But by doing it virtually, it's going to be available to a much wider audience. 24-7,.

B

Running from november 1st of this year, through january, 31st of 2021.

B

Anyone, anywhere can join, and all you need is internet access..

B

You can come in as many times as you want..

B

You can access it, access it free of charge..

B

You can do it in your pajamas..

B

It's something, again, that we're really excited to offer to help people stay connected.

Dayna,, this virtual expo represents a new experience for many of our attendees,.

A

Please share the range of options in which an attendee can anticipate when visiting.

A

Absolutely, and just like an in-person expo,.

B

Doing this virtually is still going to offer a lot of the same components,.

B

Programs and services that we would've done at the fairgrounds.

B

Entertainment for instance, is a very important element of expo and we will have entertainment.

B

Broadway show tunes, classical music, stand up, comedy, and so much more..

B

There will be a range of classes that will be offered, dance and cooking.

B

There will be exercise options,, other health and wellness offerings,, and there will also be information about investment and legal matters..

B

Just a range of things that I think are going to be important for people to take advantage. Of.

B

Our exhibitors, oh, go ahead., go ahead.. Our exhibitors,, including government agencies,, service-oriented businesses,.

B

Non-Profits, will be able to provide a lot.

B

Of information about their programs and services.

B

Again,, what's important to remember is at a time like this,.

B

We're going to be able to offer this in a way. That's.

B

Going to be with no risk to anyone's health.

B

Now, bcda will offer specific talks at the event.

Can you share those topics? absolutely, in looking at the programs and services that we offer,.

And then looking really closely at the things that people.

B

We've decided on four things that we're going to be offering.

B

First of all,, our director, laura riley,.

B

Will be doing an extensive presentation about.

B

The baltimore county department of aging and about the programs and services that we offer,.

B

About a whole range of things that we have at hand.

B

Secondly,, we all know very well that medicare and.

B

Its benefits are very important to the people that we serve.

B

So with that in mind and knowing that health coverage issues can be very complex,.

B

That navigating medicare can be very difficult for a lot of people,.

B

We're going to be offering the a, b, c, ds of medicare.

B

thirdly,. We know that nutrition and health benefits are also very important for people.

B

So our nutritionist will be offering a program on holistic, nutrition.

B

You are what you eat, and we know that.

B

She'll be talking a lot about different options and different nutrition offerings that people can take advantage. Of.

B

Finally,, we know that care giving is very important.

B

So we will be offering presentation not only to benefit the people who are caregivers,.

B

But hopefully, to benefit the people who are recipients of that care.

B

With all four of these options,, we want people to just take advantage of them and take advantage of them over and over again, if you want to.
