To start today's show, we're pleased to welcome dayna brown, deputy director at bcda, to share information about older americans month celebrated annually in may, along with a special event.

well,. Thank you so much for having me again.

Let's begin by talking about older americans month, if you.

A

Could briefly share information about our nation's observance of this wonderful acknowledgment.

A

Let's go back to 1963 and that's when.

B

Older americans month was established as senior citizens month.

B

In 1963,, only these 17 million americans had reached their 65th birthday.

B

About a third lived in poverty, and there were.

B

Very few programs to meet their needs because of the older americans, act,.

B

Which established a lot of these programs didn't go into effect until two years, later.

B

But so much has changed over the last 60 years,.

B

And older adults now make up the fastest-growing part of the us population.

B

In baltimore county,, almost one in five residents are age, 60 or older..

B

Older americans month is the time to acknowledge.

B

The contributions older persons have made to this country.

B

In particular, those who served and defended our country.

B

Every president, since kennedy has issued a formal proclamation,.

B

Either during or right before the month of may asking that.

B

The entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities.

B

Older americans month is celebrated across the country,.

B

Through ceremonies, events, fairs, other activities.

B

since 1963,, when it was created and with the help of science, technology,.

B

Research,, you name it, adults are living longer and healthier lives than ever. Before.

B

Dayna,, can you share information about.

A

The administration for community living's theme for this year?.

A

The theme for 2022 is age. My way.

B

This may and for the rest of the year,.

B

This theme is a focus on aging in place.

B

how older adults can plan to stay in their homes and live.

B

Independently in their communities, in what I like to call, the three possibles.

B

As long as possible, as independently as possible, and as safely as possible., this 2022 theme represents an opportunity for all of us to explore.

B

The many ways that older adults can remain in and be involved in their communities.

B

We at bcda will offer opportunities for discussing how planning,.

B

Participation, accessibility, and.

B

Making connections all play a role in aging in the place.

B

Emphasizing that what each person needs and prefers is unique.

B

Aging has a very individual experience and we know that well at bcda.

B

We see 90-year-olds running marathons,.

B

We see 70 and 80-year-olds at pickle-ball and basketball, courts,.

B

But we also see others who are socially isolated and may need additional assistance.

B

This theme is also about starting those conversations, so that.

B

Each individual has their needs, met and can age in their best way.

B

With so much at our disposal, these days,.

B

Technology, accessibility, options,.

B

As well as the support offered by a range of services,.

B

Programs, and products, everyone can create their own plan and age. Their way.

B

A

I understand a special event will be offered called changing the rhythm of aging.. Can you elaborate?

A

absolutely., as you know,.

B

Our initiative for this year is cultivating a brighter tomorrow.

B

Al muehlberger,, a member of our baltimore county commission on aging,.

B

Had a lot to do with creating the vision for this event.

B

Changing the rhythm of aging is going to start with a drum circle of.

B

110 [inaudible] and their rhythm together will speak to the unity of older adults in aging.

B

The drum circle will then be followed by tai chi event,.

B

Which speaks to individual body rhythms.

B

This event is going to be friday, may 27th, from 10:00 to noon at meadowood park in timonium.

B

It is limited to 110 attendees,, but it is free of charge. wonderful.
