Here to talk about those tools and support in the form of the caregivers mini-conference is michelle. Bruns,.

welcome to the show, michelle. thank you.. The responsibilities of a caregiver can be very rewarding, but challenging.

A

Let's start by defining the role of a caregiver.

B

Well, you're right,: it's a challenging role that could involve a lot of hands-on care for your loved one.

B

Who you're trying to keep safe and independent in the community.

B

It can involve financial concerns,, physical concerns,.

B

A wide range of challenges.

B

The caregivers program is very multifaceted.

A

Can you talk about the services that your program provides as well as the range of clients that you serve?

A

sure., the national family, caregivers support program.

B

Is meant to reach out to the sons,, the daughter-in-law,, the spouses,.

B

The siblings of seniors, who are trying to stay independent in the community.

B

But need some extra help.

B

in our program,. The "senior" is defined as being age, 60 and over,.

B

And we try and assist with many things,.

B

Including outreach, resource information, and support.

A

The toll of being a caregiver can impact your health.

A

Can you talk about how this occurs and how you can recognize the symptoms when you're going through it?.

A

Sure. excuse me.

B

When you are run down, you're having trouble sleeping,.

B

You're not eating well, you're stressed out,.

B

You might develop some bad habits like eating too much or drinking,.

B

Things like that that you see coming;, you might be depressed.

B

Those are all definite symptoms of a change in your life.

B

And those are not positive, changes.

A

You also have an upcoming mini-conference in april..

A

Can you talk about what you're going to be offering and what they can expect to learn at the conference?.

B

Yes. we're very pleased to invite people on saturday, april 16th,.

B

To the edgemere senior center for a morning half-day conference, where we will review resources and information.

B

Specifically designed for caregivers of older adults.

A

I know attendees can expect a wonderful lineup of speakers..

A

Can you share some of the speakers with our audience?

A

yes., we're very pleased to have a mindfulness-based,.

B

Stress reduction, workshop,, a demonstration.

B

It's a seated exercise for meditation.

B

And we will have a teacher instructing us through that.

B

We also have an excellent guest speaker from the office of the attorney general.

B

Who's going to review some of the documents that are important to have,.

B

Like living wills,, advanced directives, and walk the audience through.

B

What do those forms mean and why it's so important.

A

Sounds very valuable.. I know you also have some special features. Planned..

A

Can you talk about those?.

B

We sure do! this year we're offering health screenings free of charge.

B

From the university of maryland, st. joseph medical center.

B

We're also going to have a variety of tables available.

B

With information about the department of aging,, as well as many of the healthcare decision, forms.

B

That our guest speaker is going to be addressing.

B

And also, I'd like to add that the edgemere senior center.

B

Is a beautiful waterfront, facility,.

B

So it's a real special feature to have it in that beautiful location.

It is a beautiful location.. I know that sponsors add a nice dimension to our outreach events.

Can you talk about any of the sponsors that you'd like to acknowledge for the caregivers conference?.

Yes. for the second year, we're very pleased to be partnering with aarp,.

Specifically, the caregiving division,, who will be present with a table there and they will be offering a free continental breakfast.

And beverages for everyone.
