Today's show captures exciting highlights from the power of age expo 2016,, formerly called baby boomer senior expo,, which is made possible by the baltimore county department of aging.

Expo 2016 celebrates the show's 29th year.

Of bringing the latest information and resources in baltimore county.

To residents and other neighboring areas., we open this year's show with an assortment of exciting interactive feature. Areas, a wide range of vendors and exhibitors,.

A

Continuous entertainment, special feature areas,.

A

A silent auction,, a veteran muster,, a job and volunteer fair,.

A

A multitude of free health screenings,, an art exhibit,.

A

And lots more, so stay tuned., debbie, orlove,, community business liaison at the department of aging will talk about expo's many sponsors and partners.

Let's start today's show with laura riley, deputy director of the baltimore county department of aging,, who will talk about expo's new features, along with other exciting elements which add to the fun, information,.

Health promoting, and resource-packed experience.

laura, welcome to the show. thanks for having me. the power of age expo celebrates the event's 29th year.

A

By continuing the show's tradition of celebrating aging, with an exciting theme.

A

Of discover the power of age by "blazing, a trail" to a healthier you.

A

Laura,, can you please update our viewers about expo basics.

A

Beginning with the theme and vision for the event?, well, the theme, "blazing a trail,". We want folks to have the opportunity.

B

To get lots of resources about making their lives the healthiest as possible.

B

So there's going to be lots of vendors to help encourage people along that route..

B

The event's taking place at timonium fairgrounds on october 26th and 27th,, and we're going to talk about a lot of the details. But folks can always look at the website at www.seniorexpoonline.com.

To get some of the nitty gritty details.

There are so many attractions at expo..

A

Can you talk about some of the highlights?

A

Attendees can expect to see and explore?

A

well, there's going to be lots of things going on.

B

So first off, you're going to need that two dollars or two canned goods to come into the show.

B

and those proceeds help for our seniors in need program. Fund.

B

Once they get there, they're going to receive their free brain puzzle, books, thanks to our sponsors, bge and gbmc.

B

And then there's going to be two days of special entertainment going on on the main stage.

B

and we have a special feature with entertainment on wednesday evening.

B

The media sponsors, channel two, and they're going to be on-site.

B

And doing some on-site filming., then we've got all of our sponsor areas in both of the halls.

B

So,, we want to see folks come out.

B

And pick up on all the nice exciting activities going on.

B

Start the show with a free networking breakfast for professionals.

B

On wednesday morning at 7:30., so, professionals, come on out and learn about your brain power,.

B

And we're going to have a special speaker for that..

B

Our feature areas also include from cabot creamery cooperative.

And giant foods, recipes,, tastings and talk, always popular.

Folks, love to have things to taste.

the veteran's muster that we're going to talk a little more about..

The brain matters exhibit --. This year's initiative for the agency.

B

All year long has been about enhancing our brains and johns hopkins medicine, alzheimer's disease research center.

B

Will be there and we're going to have all kinds of interactive activities going on about the brain.

B

Kaiser will be there with various health screenings, so folks can get all kinds of free screenings.

B

Maryland public television has a really neat display about the salutes to vietnam, veterans.

B

again,, more health screenings from medstar health., all kinds of things going on. the job fair will be especially of interest to folks who are looking for current employment, opportunities.

B

and, as we said,. We have a lot of brain activities going on.

B

In the brain matters area as well.

B

Two-Hundred fifty plus exhibitors,, so if anything, you're looking for related to healthy aging,.

B

You're going to be able to find it at our show., there will be lots of different vendors from the baltimore county government.. So just about every agency that deals with constituents directly is going to be on site.

B

and then the art show is always wonderful to see,.

B

The magnificent artwork that's been done in our 20 senior centers.

B

And if that s, not enough,, if you want to be more active,, the exercise demo stage is going to feature a lot of our more active classes.

B

That take place in the senior centers like the dance and different exercise. Activities.

B

silent, auction --. You can get a little bit of everything at the auction,.

B

Also part of our great fundraiser.

B

veterans,, their families,, are welcome to our resource muster.

B

Again,, the job fair, a volunteer fair to find different opportunities;.

B

Flu shots, all kinds of screenings, again,.

B

And medicare part d assistance for those folks who are picking their new prescription drug plans.

Wow!, that's quite a list.. It is.

B

A

I happen to know our audience would love to learn more about the continuous entertainment that you mentioned..

Can you fill us in?.

B

Absolutely., there's lots of walking around and things to do there,, but you also want might want to take some time, pick up some lunch and sit at the stage and watch some of the entertainment that's going to be going on on stage.

B

so, of course,. Our feature is going to be lonnie youngblood,.

B

And that's going to be on wednesday night from 4:00 to 6:00pm.

B

But then we've also got all kinds of other musical entertainment going on,.

B

The rearview mirror, the senior swing band.

B

at noon on wednesday is our official opening ceremony,.

B

So our county executive,, mr. kamenetz, will be there along with the maryland secretary of veterans' affairs.,.

B

We're going to have a brain matters tournament,, so folks have been going through some preliminary heats to find out. Who is the most brain astute out there in our centers.

B

And the tournament s going to take place at the expo.

B

ellis woodward is always a wonderful emcee for us and also brings some musical entertainment as well.

B

spice, jazz, sons of riley,, and then we're going to be announcing. Winners from the art show on the stage, as well as a writing contest.

B

That's been going on throughout the past couple of months.

B

And then our favorite, josh and the good old stuff will be there.

B

Wrapping up the show.

Okay,, an important resource area is the job and volunteer fair.

A

Can you tell viewers what they should expect there?

A

sure. the job fair is really geared towards older adults and veterans.

B

Who are seeking re-employment. so,, the baltimore county workforce development will be there.

B

With resources for individuals, as well as the veterans, workforce initiative and baltimore county human resources., and right now, we're recruiting for employers who might be looking to hire individuals at this time of year.

B

So they can always call, check out the website, and get in touch with us. If they'd like to have a booth there to help recruit new employees., the volunteer, fair is sponsored by our own retired senior volunteer program.

And that's where folks can find out about all the different opportunities if they're interested in volunteering, with an impact in the community.

B

So there will be lots of representation of opportunities there, as well.

B

Another important feature is our veterans muster area.

Who should attend that and what will it offer?.

B

The veterans muster is really for veterans of any age..

B

Don't need to be a senior. if you've just returned, but veterans of any age,, their family members, and for those who may be in a situation.

B

Of having-- their caregivers would want to be there as well., so the maryland office of veterans affairs will be there.

B

Baltimore county's own homefront,, which is group that helps develop resources and get them into the hands of baltimore county veterans..

B

Pets for patriots,, which is really neat, --, a way to connect veterans with animals who can assist them.

B

There will also be different vet centers,, the veterans of foreign war, --.

B

Pretty much anything that you might want to find as a resource if you're veteran, we'll be able to connect you with at the show.

Now I know baltimore county's 20 different senior centers are playing a big role with the event by offering an art exhibit.

A

As well as fitness demonstrations., can you talk a little bit about that? sure.? Each of our centers has been going through a show.

B

At their different locations around the county and picking the best of show for their centers., those individuals then will bring their artwork to be shown at expo..

B

People who come get to pick the best of show and then we'll also have a professional. Judging that's going on there.

B

So,, the artwork is going to be of all different mediums.

B

And it's going to be a wonderful way to showcase what you can learn if you join one of our centers.

B

then, from the demonstrations stage, we're going to give you.

B

A little taste of what happens in the centers around fitness., so you could take part in tai chi;. There will be movin' &, groovin',.

B

Lots of music, zumba gold, the line, dancing, move with balance.

B

The one that I'm looking forward the most to seeing is the samurai fitness -- haven't seen that one yet..

B

We definitely have aerobics, some urban line, dancing.

B

so,, no matter what your level is, you might want to watch or jump in and take part in the demonstration as well.

Sounds like something for everyone and of every age.
