A
A
B
Initially
Battery
Park,
of
which
we're
staying
in
one
of
the
quadrants,
had
been
let
go
disrepair.
It
was
kind
of
a
nondescript
area.
It's
a
city
park,
there's
four
quadrants,
two
on
the
south
side,
the
library
site
and
two
here
on
the
county
side.
It
was
given
to
the
public
in
18-49
for
public
use
forever,
and
at
one
time
there
were
four
cannon
from
the
Civil
War
and
those
were
presented
to
the
community
in
about
1900
1942.
B
They
were
given
to
the
war
production
board
for
World
War,
two
to
be
melted
down
for
armament
for
that
effort.
And
after
that,
like
I,
say
the
park
fell
into
disrepair
and
and
so
don
Carr
lion
had
the
foresight
who
is
also
on
the
library
board,
to
bring
the
park
back
to
some
semblance
of
its
original
features.
B
He
contacted
a
Tom
Hickman,
former
county
executive
and
Rick
fen,
current
city
manager,
Dave
Rodgers
and
myself,
to
see
if
we'd
be
interested
in
assisting
and
realigning
the
sidewalks,
putting
some
trees
and
bushes
and
some
fencing
in
when
Dave
Rodgers
presented
some
historic
photographs
about
with
the
cannon
that
became
a
kind
of
like.
Where
can
we
get
these
well
there?
They
be
prohibitive
to
purchase
nowadays.
But
a
short
story
is
that
we
worked
with
Bay
cast
foundry.
B
We
had
prints
from
the
1840
foundries
that
cast
those
cannon,
and
now
we
have
two
replicas
that
are
down
to
the
actual
specifications,
one
in
the
southeast
quadrant
and
then
the
Dahlgren
Canyon
here
in
this
quadrant.
The
significance
of
those
cannon
is
the
fact
that
one,
the
dog
Rijn
was
on
board
the
USS
Hartford,
the
flagship
of
Admiral
David
Farragut,
who
allegedly
said
damn
the
torpedoes
full
speed
ahead,
the
other
cannon,
the
big
mortar
cannon,
the
original,
weighed
19,000
pounds
that
was
at
Fort
Sumter,
the
beginning
of
the
Civil
War
in
1862.
B
So
anyway,
we
completed
phase
one
of
the
park.
We've
got
the
sidewalks,
we've
got
petraea
some
trees
that
were
planted
some
shrubbery
benches
and
the
park
is
looking
really
nice.
But
then
dr.
Tim
Eckstein
came
to
our
Bay
Veterans
foundation
meeting
and
said
he
had
met
at
a
conference
in
Minnesota.
I
fell
by
the
name
of
Hershel
woody
Williams,
Medal
of
Honor
recipient
from
World
War,
two,
the
last
surviving
Medal
of
Honor
recipient
from
the
Battle
of
Iwo
Jima.
B
B
The
one
that
or
this
one
that
the
Bay
Veterans
Foundation
is
coordinating
with
the
Williams
foundation
is
going
to
be
dedicated
groundbreaking.
Today,
April
29th
dedication
is
scheduled
for
September
30th
this
year
and
we're
the
only
one
in
Michigan.
Evidently,
a
couple
communities
have
been
contacted
and
for
some
unknown
reason
they
turned
it
down,
so
we
jumped
at
the
chance
because
a
gold
star
represents
a
son
or
a
daughter
of
a
family
who
gave
their
life
during
active
duty
to
the
service
of
our
country.
My
grandmother
was
a
gold
star.
B
Mother
back
in
the
late
40s
and
early
50s
I
had
an
uncle
that
was
killed
in
France
in
World
War
two,
so
this
kind
of
had
a
personal
ring
with
me
and
as
I
talk
to
other
people,
I'm
I'm,
absolutely
amazed
at
the
impact
that
or
I'm
absolutely
amazed
that
there
are
so
many
families
who
have
had
a
loved
one
and
uncle
a
grandpa,
a
son,
a
daughter
who
gave
their
life.
So
our
hope
is.
B
A
C
C
A
great
deal
of
hard
work
has
already
gone
into
making
this
day
possible
and
I
will
make
a
few
more
comments
about
those
individuals
and
organizations
that
have
made
this
day
possible
at
the
dinner,
which
follows
our
ceremony
across
the
street
at
the
American
Legion
Post.
But
today
is
really
just
the
start
of
our
building
that
monument
dedicated
to
all
families
who
have
had
a
loved
one
make
the
ultimate
sacrifice.
C
While
in
service
of
their
country,
we
forge
ahead
to
build
a
place
to
honor
the
gold
star
families,
as
they
continue
to
endure
the
loss
of
their
loved
ones
and
to
remind
them
that
they
are
not
forgotten.
It
is
a
place
of
reverence
for
all
of
us
to
honor
and
remember
the
fall
and
to
say
thanks
to
the
families,
for
their
sacrifice.
I
would
now
like
to
identify
and
welcome
to
some
of
our
elected
officials
and
other
community
leaders.
C
C
C
And
now
to
open
the
ceremony
we'll
remind
ourselves
how
lucky
we
are
to
be
Americans
and
a
debt
of
gratitude.
We
owe
the
military
services
and
their
families
the
veterans
who
have
served
those
who
have
made
the
ultimate
sacrifice
along
with
their
gold
star
families.
We
will
now
say
the
Pledge
of
Allegiance.
Please
direct
your
attention
to
the
gold
star
flag,
where
we
have
the
American
flag.
C
D
Almighty
God,
whose
great
commandment
is
that
we
love
our
neighbors
ourselves
and
who
has
taught
us
that
we
should
do
to
others
as
we
have
them
do
unto
us.
We
ask
your
blessing
upon
the
work
of
the
Gold
Star
Memorial,
as
our
purpose
is
to
help
our
fellow
citizens,
especially
those
who
have
served
this
nation
with
honor
in
time
of
conflict,
remember
their
families
and
comrades
for
their
great
sacrifice
and
to
promote
all
the
services,
well,
our
community
and
our
state
and
nation.
D
So
we
pray
that
you
will
enlighten
our
minds
with
the
clear
vision
of
your
will
for
us
inspire
our
determination
to
follow
that
vision
of
your
will
and
we
give
thanks
Lord
that
we
were
able
to
come
together
today
in
honor
of
those
who
gave
the
ultimate
price
for
the
cost
of
freedom.
May
the
dedication
offered
here
be
a
source
of
strength
on
our
community
that
our
work
may
bear
fruit
worthy
of
the
ideals
and
aspirations
under
you,
O
Father.
We
pray,
amen.
C
Thank
you
very
much
mark
and
musicians
as
beautiful
the
gold
star
concept
goes
back
to
World
War
one.
Initially,
it
was
started
by
a
mother
who
lost
a
son
who
was
flying
for
the
British
air
force.
He
was
an
American,
he
was
killed
in
the
European
theater
and
that
was
the
genesis
for
it
would
became
the
Gold
Star
Mothers
throughout
the
subsequent
almost
100
years.
C
So
I
came
back
here
in
October
and
being
a
member
of
the
board
of
the
bay
veterans
foundation.
I
brought
it
up
at
our
strategic
planning
committee
meeting,
which
was
two
weeks
after
my
return
from
that
convention,
we
formed
an
exploratory
committee.
This
there
was
a
groundswell
of
enthusiasm
and
support
from
every
corner
imaginable
in
this
region
and
without
which
we
would
not
be
here
today.
A
lot
of
work,
a
lot
of
planning
a
lot
of
coordination.
C
A
communication
has
gone
into
making
this
day
possible,
but
really
this
is
just
the
beginning
and
I
sincerely
hope
that
each
and
every
one
of
you
can
be
a
part
of
this
wonderful
all
project.
I
hope
that
each
and
every
one
of
you
can
embrace
it
take
ownership
and
be
proud
of
what
we're
going
to
be
able
to
do
in
this
community.
I
would
now
like
to
introduce
the
president
and
director
of
the
Hershel
woody
Williams
Medal
of
Honor
foundation
from
Louisville
Kentucky
mr.
Chad
Graham.
E
Hello,
everyone
I
can't
tell
you
what
an
honor
it
is
to
be
here
with
all
of
you
and
this
commit
in
this
community.
This
effort
has
grown
because
of
communities
like
yours
and
folks
that
make
up
this
project
team
and
it's
something
that
has
always
needed
done
and
it's
something.
That's
it's
been
overlooked
a
few
years
ago,
Hershel
woody
Williams,
who
is
also
my
grandfather,
came
to
the
family
and
it
started
with
a
little
seed
of
a
plant
to
honor
gold,
star
families
and
communities
in
his
own
home
state
of
West
Virginia.
E
Once
that
first
monument
was
dedicated.
That
mission,
it
soon
became
apparent
that
we
had
a
long
way
to
go
and
as
I
stand
here
and
had
a
few
moments
to
to
just
say
hello
and
meet
some
of
the
gold
star.
Families
in
y'all's
community
I
can't
stress
how
much
it
means
to
us
to
see
communities
around
the
nation
pick
up
this
effort
and
lead
the
charge
to
honor
those
who
have
paid
the
ultimate
sacrifice
for
our
freedom,
as
well
as
the
sacrifice
that
these
families
continue
to
endure.
E
So
I
applaud
you
as
a
community
and
thank
you
for
what
you're
doing
here
in
Bay
City
Michigan,
our
founder
Hershel
woody
Williams
is
actually
in
New
York
today
to
dedicate
the
20th
gold
star
families,
memorial
monument
here
in
the
United
States,
but
he
sends
his
remarks
to
you
in
the
way
of
a
poem.
He
wanted
me
to
express
his
gratitude
of
your
community
and
of
this
committee
and
his
sorrow
that
he
couldn't
be
here.
E
E
Our
boy
went
off
to
war.
He
said
he
wanted
to
go
to
give
many
others
of
freedom.
They
don't
know.
He
said
I
was
so
fortunate
to
be
born
in
the
USA
and
to
have
all
the
privileges
that
have
come.
My
way,
I
could
tell
you
he
loved
America
and
he
wanted
to
do
what's
right.
He
wanted
to
do
his
duty
for
country
and
a
fight.
We
all
knew
the
danger
but
prayed
he
would
be
safe
for
then
we
were
notified
that
he
had
met
his
fate.
E
E
We
shed
our
tears
of
sorrow.
We
know
he
rest
in
peace
having
given
all
he
had
to
help
wars
of
violence
cease.
He
would
say
to
others,
be
brave
and
stand
strong.
We
are
all
a
part
of
America
right
where
we
belong,
he's
standing
guard
in
heaven
with
all
his
buddies
near
they
sacrificed
their
lives.
So
we
could
be
safe
right
here.
Let
us
remember
what
freedom
really
costs
and
never
to
forget
the
loved
ones
that
many
of
us
had
lost
at
this
time.
E
I
would
like
the
Bay,
City
Michigan
gold,
star
families,
memorial
monument
committee
to
join
me
up
here
and,
in
particular
on
behalf
of
the
woody
Williams
Medal
of
Honor
foundation,
our
family.
Our
founder
I
would
like
to
honor
three
of
these
committee
members,
Keith
Markstrom,
Tim,
Eckstein
and
Dave
Bledsoe,
with
something
that
comes
directly
from
the
gunner.
As
we
say
from
our
founder
woody
Williams.
These
men
have
gone
above
and
beyond
with
their
team,
and
it
is
a
great
team.
E
E
E
E
Now
one
thing
I'd
like
to
do
as
I
drove
up
here
today:
I
called
woody
himself
and
he
was
really
fired
up.
He
was
excited
about
this
community.
He's
excited
about
this
project,
and
one
thing
he
reminded
me
is
something
that
at
a
moment-
and
he
and
I
shared
at
the
first
memorial
that
we
dedicated
when
we
saw
the
first
gold
star
family
member,
walk
up
and
touched
that
wall
and
a
tear
rolled
down
her
face.
E
It
changed
my
life,
because
at
that
moment
she
realized
that
her
loved
one
would
never
be
forgotten,
and
that's
why
we're
here
and
I
would
like
to
honor
all
the
gold
star
family
members
who
are
here
today.
You
are
the
guest
of
honor,
your
fallen,
who
has
paid
the
ultimate
sacrifice,
will
never
be
forgotten
and
we
send
our
love
and
we
send
our
support
and
our
thanks
for
your
sacrifice.
E
C
F
G
Good
afternoon,
everybody
and
thank
you
for
being
here
what
an
honor,
what
an
honor
for
our
city
to
be
able
to
have
this
monument
placed
here
in
its
memory
and
all
the
families
that
it's
going
to
basically
symbolize
for
the
suffering
and
the
recognition
that
they
certainly
deserve.
This
has
been
a
dream
of
a
number
of
people,
and
I
want
to
note
that
Don
Carla
is
the
one
that
basically
set
the
motion
and
motion
going
for
Battery
Park
without
him
and
then
with
Keith
supporting
him.
G
Battery
Park
would
not
be
here
in
the
format
that
it's
in,
and
it
would
not
be
the
home
of
this
beautiful
honor
that
we
have
today.
So
those
two
individuals
really
need
to
take
the
credit
on
behalf
of
the
mayor
in
City
Commission,
who
have
been
fully
supportive
of
this.
We
are
very
honored
to
have
this
here,
the
only
one
in
our
state
and
it's
a
recognition
of
the
leadership
of
the
city,
the
county
and
all
of
our
partners
that
have
worked
on
this,
including
the
library.
G
D
Lord,
as
we
come
with
this
historic
groundbreaking
and
to
come
and
reflect,
we
ask
you
Lord
to
bless
the
ground
that
we
stand
on,
not
just
the
ground
we
stand
on,
but
that
we
can
remember
each
and
every
one
that
paid
that
ultimate
sacrifice.
As
we
prepare
to
get
the
memorial
built
here
and
that
as
people
come,
they
can
reflect
whether
it
was
land
or
sea,
and
we
give
thanks
to
you
for
all
who
paid
that
ultimate
sacrifice
for
the
freedoms
we
enjoy.
Today.
C
F
F
C
Just
prior
to
the
Pledge
of
Allegiance
I
welcomed
a
number
of
local
elected
officials
and
community
leaders,
Don
Caroline,
who
started
this
Battery
Park
project
I
did
not
mention
I'm
mister
wool.
Wine
from
Serena's
Johnson
occurred
Foglesong
from
WTA
architects,
two
of
the
number
of
organizations
that
have
been
involved
with
making
the
state
possible.
There
are
others,
SME
geophysical
engineers,
McMillan
associates,
Tim's
towing
did
a
beautiful
job
on
these
shovels.
Don't
you
think?
That's
a
remarkable
job.
C
B
H
Actually,
I
actually
prepared
something
but
I,
don't
think
I'm
going
to
read
that
nobody
ever
asked
to
be
a
gold
star,
family
member.
It's
a
membership
that
you
don't
want.
You
want
to
return
it
in
every
aspect
of
life
in
itself,
but
I
have
to
say
that
I
am
proud
to
be
a
gold
star
family
member
and
the
people
that
stand
alongside
me
probably
are
the
best
people
that
you'll
ever
meet
you're.
H
H
It's
been
11
years
now
for
me,
since
my
husband
almost
killed
in
action,
and
it's
still
some
days
feels
like
yesterday
and
I
think
everybody
can
affirm
that
it
will
be
that
today,
the
commitment
of
the
community
is
making
by
putting
this
memorial
out
for
us
well
remind
us
that
we're
never
forgotten
our
sacrifice
will
never
be
forgotten
and
I
loved
will
never
be
forgotten,
and
for
that
no
words
really
can
convey.
How
much
this
memorial
will
mean
to
us
and
we're
grateful,
and
thank
you.
C
Thank
you
very
much.
Melissa
Melissa
represents
what
this
is
all
about.
Thank
you
again
now
I'm
going
to
ask
our
project
team,
those
20
or
so
members
of
our
committee,
who
have
met
several
times,
email
back
and
forth
several
times
a
day
on
the
phone
taking
time
out
of
their
busy
schedules
to
help
make
this
project
possible
I'm
going
to
ask
all
the
project
members
to
please
come
forward
and
turn
the
soil.
C
Those
of
you
who
took
time
to
come
out
participate
today,
the
gold
star
family
members,
the
project
team,
local
officials,
elected
officials,
community
leaders.
Thank
you
so
much
for
being
a
part
of
what
we've
been
able
to
put
together
here
today.
I
would
now
like
to
introduce
born,
be
geek,
County,
Commissioner.
Also,
a
member
of
the
bay
veterans
foundation,
boy.
I
Thank
you
I
like
to
thank
dr.,
Eckstein
and
Keith,
and
especially
Don
fire
Lyon
for
all
the
work
they've
done
on
this
project.
I've
been
on
the
committee,
but
the
meetings
haven't
worked
out
with
my
schedule
too.
Well,
so
we're
working
on
changing
the
schedule
but
like
to
thank
them
for
all
the
work.
They've
done,
I'd
like
to
recognize
a
Commissioner
Tom
writer
he's
in
the
back.
There
he's
got
a
Michigan
shirt
on
so
I
had
a
recognize
them.
Pacifica
does
Michigan
shirt,
but
thank
you.
I
We
had
our
County
Convention
in
Lansing
about
a
month
ago
and
governor
Snyder
spoke
to
us
and
he
talked
about
city
and
county
and
township
and
village
collaboration
and
I
think
this
is
one
one
example
of
it.
I
think
we
need
to
do
more
of
it.
Revenue
sharing
is
always
a
big
issue
and
he
said
if
we
work
together,
we
could
we
could
probably
use
the
funds
more
wisely.
So
hopefully
this
is
beginning
of
and
we've
done,
some
other
projects
already
I
know
the
Hampton
Fire
Department
based
city
is
working
on
a
fire
truck.
I
So
there's
areas
of
collaboration
that
are
being
worked
on
already
Battery
Park
has
been
I,
know
down.
Car
lyon
started
the
the
library
project
and
then
the
Battery
Park
soda
got
set
by
the
wayside,
but
now
it's
back
again
and
appreciate
the
restoring
it
to
its
former
former
glory
I.
Don't
know
that
any
of
you
see
the
World
War
one
store
story
on
PBS
was
a
three-part
series
about
two
weeks
ago.
I
I
It
was
trench
warfare,
mustard,
gas,
flamethrowers,
wasn't
a
pretty
sight
and
there
were
thousands
of
Americans
being
killed
every
day,
so
that-
and
he
was
the
first
one
to
recognize
that
mothers
that
had
lost
the
son
could
put
to
put
the
star
on
their
honor
service
flag
outside
their
their
windows
and
then
the
the
organization
itself
started
after
that
the
other
part
is
I'm,
a
Vietnam
veteran
and
we
have
58,000
Plus
fellow
veterans
on
the
wall
in
Washington
DC,
the
35th
anniversary
this
year.
We
plan
to
go
up
for
Veterans
Day.
I
They
have
a
ceremony
where
we
read
all
the
names
of
almost
58,000
threw
over
about
a
two
day
period,
sprite
a
quite
a
moving
ceremony
to
read
all
those
names
and
to
have
the
ceremonies
that
they
do
at
the
Veterans.
Day
are
what
welcome
home
wasn't
wasn't
the
greatest
when
we
came
back
from
Vietnam
there's
a
lot
of
controversy
going
on
at
the
time,
and
so
a
lot
of
the
veterans
still
felt
slighted.
I
But
when
we
go
there,
people
always
say
thank
you
for
your
service
and
they
shake
our
hand
as
young
people,
young
people
that
come
up
to
us
and
talk
to
us
and
thank
us.
So
we
are
taking
a
bus
out.
Then.
What
is
interested
come
see
me.
We
will
be
traveling
out
there
a
couple
days
before
Veterans
Day
in
November,
11th
and
coming
back
day
or
two
later,
but
thanks
all
for
ceremony
and
thanks
for
the
park
it's
being
developed
and
thanks
for
the
Gold
Star
Mothers,
especially
thank.
F

a
lot
to
me,

meant
a
lot
to
many
of
you.
We
hope
to
see
you
all
here,

for
the
dedication
at

this.
Is
your
project
embrace
it
become
a
part
of
it.
It's
going
to
make
all
this
a
better
community.
