The creative arts endured an abundance of strife during the pandemic, so to see The Black Cherry Theatre Cafe emerging stronger is an incredibly inspiring sight.
Rachel Maddix and Jon Davis have created a hub which serves not only local audience members, but catalyses national opportunities for creatives in the BCP region.
We hear from Rachel and Jon on episode 5 of our mini-series, and hear how they’ve used grant funding to grow a unique theatre community in the heart of Boscombe and beyond.

working
with
the
creative
sector,
as
well

community

venue

pretty
incredible
stuff.

amazing

that
have

going
on
a
black
cherry
over

last
couple
of
years.

There's
no
sort
of
rigid
boundaries
because
there's
just
the
three
of
us
and
my
husband
Jill,
who
does
a
lot
as
well
and
all
our
families
get
involved.
Don't
they
really?
And
so
it's
kind
of
like
three
families
in
a
way,
but
on
a
day-to-day
basis,
I'm
there
and
seeing
the
multiple
creatives
that
come
in
all
the
time,
sometimes
informally
or
formally,
and
we
have
lots
of
people
just
come
in
to
kind
of
try
and
connect
with
the
local
art
scene.

It's
an
open
door,
and
that
was
the
purpose
really
behind
having
it
as
a
theater
and
a
cafe
is
so
that
you
had
somewhere
open,
just
come
and
buy
a
coffee
come
and
have
a
chat
and
there's
that
kind
of
opportunity
to
feel
like
it's
okay
to
do
that.
Rather
than
often
with
the
Arts,
you
get
a
kind
of
perception
that
it's
only
for
certain
people,
certain
demographics,
it
absolutely
it's
not.

Projects,
professional
Theater
Company
to
try
and
do
as
much
as
we
possibly
can
starting
off
really
and
it's
it's
evolved
in
the
same
thing.
We
can
just
do
a
lot
more
with
it
so
trying
to
employ
artists.
So
a
couple
of
Mines
come
together
to
create
a
theater
company
and
are
able
to
you
know,
get
enough
work
to
employ
an
audition,
more
creative,
yeah
and
then
more
creatives.
And
at
one
point
we
had
a
theater
company
that
had
maybe
about
12
to
15
people.

Vita
Nova
and
DFA
dance
studios
and
various
others
to
ensure
that
we're
all
talking
to
each
other,
brilliant
and
just
sort
of
you
know
we
can't
totally
program
around
each
other,
because
that
would
be
too
vast.
But
we
can
say:
oh
we're,
doing
a
big
thing
on
that
and
then,
if
someone
else
is
doing
a
big
thing,
that's
different
then
great
and
we
physically
try
and
support
each
other
as
well,
so
physically
try
and
turn
up
at
things
at
other
venues
and
just
generally
try
and
grow
Boston
as
a
group.

I,
imagine
lots
of
that
just
literally
almost
disappeared
overnight
for
a
lot
of
people
and
that's
you
know
from
a
you
know,
I
suppose
Financial
point
of
view
really
difficult
for
people,
but
there's
a
social
aspect
to
that
as
a
mental
health
aspect.
To
that,
and
did
you
see
that
on
the
ground
when
that,
when
all
of
that
hit
massively.

to
rethink
how
we
were
going
to
do
what
we
we
were
doing,
which
was
almost
impossible,
it's
impossible
to
plan
for
a
future
where
you
don't
quite
know
where
your
entry
point
is
yeah
and
we
sort
of
to
a
certain
extent
took
a
punt
on
that
entry
point
when
we
opened
and-
and
that
was
all
opened
up
again-
and
that
was
it
was
tricky
it
was.
It
was
harder
than
we
thought.
You
know
it's
hard
to
predict
these
things
yeah.
So
the
difference
between
you
know
this
year
and
last
year,

talk
about
that
a
little
bit,
you
know
we
you
applied
for
what
we
called
our
bounce
back
challenge
fund
and
it
was
really
Innovative
our
idea
with
that
wasn't
just
to
give
out
cash
to
help
people
survive,
it
was,
to
you
know,
be
competitive
and
people
to
give
us
their
ideas
about
how
they
could
not
only
support
their
own
businesses,
but
particularly
wider
parts
of
the
community
as
well.
What
was
your
your
aim
when
you
were
submitting
your
bid
for
the
for
the
bounce
back
challenge
fund.

It
was
it's
all
about
removing
barriers
and
as
a
theater
company,
as
a
professional
and
as
a
teacher
of
of
actors
and
creators
and
performers
and
then
going
into
Bournemouth,
Christchurch
and
Paul
was
an
artist
and
trying
to
lock
down
as
many
opportunities
artistically
and
creatively.
So
all
lots
of
red
tape
and
lots
of
barriers
and
lots
of
things
in
the
way
over
the.
However
many
years,
I've
been
doing
it
and
just
trying
to
remove
those
things
and
that's
what
we
do.

You
were
saying
earlier
about
the
different
various
people
using
the
space
for
really
rehearsal,
but
you
can
talk
to
us
about
whatever
level
you're
you
you're
at.
If
you
need
support
with
marketing,
we
can
do
that
if
you
need
support
with
Finance
in
terms
of
how
you're
going
to
finance
your
show
and
pay
your
actors,
and
if
you
need
and
the
more
we
do,
that,
the
more
creators
we
have
almost
in
our
sort
of
index
of
creative,
which
is
beautiful.

Mean
at
this
current
Point,
we
are
applying
for
Arts,
Council
funding
and
other
types
of
funding
to
ensure
that
we've
got
the
time
and
the
people
power
to
really
support
everything
that
we
want
to
back
and
move
forward
with,
and
we've
got
at
least
three
projects
that
we
could
just
go
with
now
and
could
have
sort
of
national
impact.
Almost
you
know
there
are
people
that
we've
nurtured
that
we've
already
worked
with
this
year
that
we're
like
right.
We
can
see
where
this
can
go.

About
it,
yeah
not
smooth.
What's
it
you
know,
I
did
see,
I
would
say
our
strength
was
the
people
involved
and
how
committed
to
it
we
were
and
supportive
of
each
other.
We
were-

working
it
all
out,
because
some
things

only
really
work
out
when
it's
happening
yeah
and
you
go
okay.
That
needs
a
lot
more
time
than
I
thought,
but
I
think
the
initial
funding
would
go
into
so
much.

time
we

doing
lighting,
we
were
doing
sounds
weren't.

it
is
quite
surprising
and
a
lot
I
got
off
to
do
my
very
informal
Facebook
lives,
because
I
think
if
we
wait
too
long
to
edit
a
film
and
everything
it
won't
happen.
So
we
do
this
sort
of
reveal
behind
the
curtain,
which
was
the
idea
from
improv.
Wasn't
it
from
Pat
doing
it
and
kind
of
doing
a
big
reveal?
And
if
you
look
at
them
you
can
see
the
vast
amount
of
different.
But
you
just
don't
know.
What's
gonna
be
like.

To
have
those
physical
venue,
I
suppose
makes
makes
a
real
difference.
So
you
know
I
know,
there's
probably
quite
a
leading
question,
but
we
are
now
feels
like
we're
in
a
post-covered
world,
although
we've
got
you
know
huge
new
challenges,
cost
of
living
inflation
environment,
which
is
there's
always
another
tsunami,
coming
our
way,
isn't.

it
sounds
like
I
suppose
without
the
support
that
you
had
through
that
period.
You
know
it
sounds
like
you
probably
had
enough
momentum
to
keep
going,
but
do
you
feel
that
you're
in
a
position
where
you're
you
know
you're
at
a
level
that
is
much
higher
than
you
would
have
been
without
that
support.

just
straight
away
thought
about
sound
of
silk
work
because
they've
just
been
wonderful
from
the
start
as
well,
that
there
are
people
like
sound
of
Soul
who
hold
all
their
private
events
and
their
Christmas
stuff

perform

sing
carols
for
us
and
there's
just
a
lovely
investment
there,
and
you
know
that
was
required.
There
are
lots
of
amazing
receiving
houses
in
Bournemouth,
but
as
far
as
I
know,
I'm
in
the
lighthouse
have
some
incredible
projects.

work
with
all
the
time
on
our
classes
and
they've
got
their
office
party
tonight
and
then
they're
doing
a
cabaret
show
working
with
Steve
at
the
Council
on
having
a
speech
and
a

working

uni,
to
strengthen
your
Partnerships
Carousel
babies,
drama
and
dance.
We
have
babies
in
every
week.

who
works
with
special
needs
adults
he's
in
every
week.
We've
got
a
big
commitment
to
inclusion,
huge
that
goes
beyond
just
saying
it.
It's
not
a
tick
box.
It's
real!

in
the
way
we
support
people,
you
know
often
audience
come
in
and
say:
oh,
it's
so
nice
to
this
group
of
you

diverse
range
of
people,
and
that
goes
every
level
doesn't.

do,

opportunities
for
people
to
come

see
or
to
learn.
So
you
said
right

the
beginning.

that
we're
all
creative

some
people,
don't

attend

of
our
classes,
maybe
improv
or
adult
acting
class
and
then
end
up
growing,
something
that
they
that
never
existed
and
that's
what
I
love.
