pandemic.
When
we
were
all
struggling
as
a
council,
we
were
trying
to
help
find
new,
innovative
ways
to
help
our
local
businesses,
organizations
and
Charities
not
just
survive
the
pandemic,
but
Thrive
as
well.
So
we
challenged
them
as
part
of
our
bounce
back
challenge
fund
to
come
up
with
new
different
projects.

That
would
help
in
that
aim,
and
today,
I'm
delighted
as
part
of
our
mini
series
of
podcasts,
to
talk
to
Emma
from
pen
gallery
to
find
out
about
their
really
exciting
projects
and
how
they've
used
that
to
help
not
just
their
business
but
the
whole
area
too.

you've

First
of
all,
could
you
just
tell
us
a
little
bit
about
yourself
and
about
your
business
as
well,
so.

Everything
stocked
in
the
store
is
local.
We
started
off
as
just
dorset-based,
but
we
have
started
growing
that
a
little
bit
going
down
the
South
Coast
as
we've
found
sort
of
really
incredible
makers
and
and
designers,
but
exhibition
wise.
So
far,
it's
all
been
dorset-based
artists
who
are
in
different
stages
of
their
careers.
We've
had
people
that
have
just
come
out
of
uni
we've
done
some
garage
shows,
but
we've
also
had
people
who
are
lecturers
or
have
done
Masters
and
a
whole.

There
was
something
lacking
and
there
was
a
reason
I
wanted
to
be
here,
but
I
knew
so
many
creative
people
and
I
was
like
how
can
I
bring
this
all
together
and
start
something
and
during
the
pandemic,
there
really
was
this
rise
for
shopping
local
and
appreciating
everything
you
had
on
your
doorstep,
because
we
were
stuck
on
our
doorstep.
Basically,
so
people
were
like
oh
gosh,
there
is
actually
a
lot
going
on
here
and
how
can
I
bring
all
of
that
together
and
I
thought?

Well,
that
was
the
perfect
sort
of
thing
to
do
was
to
put
it
all
in
one
space
and
have
events
when
we
could
have
events
and
run
workshops
and
sort
of
bring
a
community
sort
of
into
one
spot,
because
I
think
there's
a
lot
of
things
going
on
in
Bournemouth
that
that
do
sort
of
celebrate
that,
but
it
wasn't
constant.
It
wasn't
permanent.
So
you've
got
like
the
South
Coast
Makers
Market.
B
Yeah
and
I
absolutely
I've
been
already
like
five
times
and
you've
got
the
Bournemouth
emerging
Arts
Festival
Fringe,
which
they
do
stuff
in
the
summer.
But
again,
I
was
like
I
want
all
of
this
all
the
time
so
I
kind
of
in
my
head,
I
kind
of
bought
the
two
together,
obviously
speaking
to
both
of
them
and
I've
Got
Friends
that
like
work
with
all
of
them
so
yeah,
it
kind.

Feels
like
an
element
right
time
for
this
type
of
thing,
I
think
definitely
I
totally
agree
with
I.
Think
people
had
a
bit
of
time
to
like
reflect
and,
like
I,
said
sort
of
like
reflect
on
what
I
wanted
from
my
area
and
if
I
was
gonna
stay
here
like
we
didn't,
the
future
was
quite
uncertain.
So
maybe
if
the
future
was
so
uncertain,
I
said
like
I
was
in
an
uncertain
place
like
working,
and
things
like
that,
I
was
like
well,
I
might
as
well.
Try
it.

At
this
point,
I
was
sort
of
working
part-time.
I
was
like
well
if
I
can
go.
If
this
is
my
like
base
range
or
base
level,
I
can
sort
of
project
from
here
and
then
I
can
always
go
back
to
this
and
and
see
how
it
goes,
but
yeah
it
felt
it.
Weirdly
was
a
good
time
and
fundraising
for
for
it
was
not
as
tricky
as
I
thought.
I
thought
it'd
be
really
hard,
because
when
I.
A
It's
well,
it's
clearly
worked
hasn't
it.
So
so
you
were
there
setting
everything
up
just
post
pandemic,
and
you
know
as
a
council
as
well.
We
were
trying
to
think
differently
as
well
and
and
enable
businesses
organizations
Charities
not
just
to
survive
the
pandemic,
but
to
do
something
different.
That
was
going.

So
I
started
doing
a
crowdfunder.
That's
how
I
originally
started
raising
money
and
through
that
word
of
mouth,
got
to
a
lovely
lady
called
Carol
who
runs
the
beef,
and
she
is
also
involved
with
the
old
school
house
in
Boston.
Yeah
and
I
was
speaking
to
her
about
what
she'd
been
up
to
how
she
had
raised
money
over
the
years,
because
she's
really
great.

General,
it
was
10
10
units
10
units.
They
were
basically
opening
up
because
the
High
Street
that
part
of
the
High
Street
had
absolutely
collapsed.
There
was
there
was
no
one
there
apart
from
I,
think
the
original
guys
we've
got
waves,
who
are
not
the
independent
who
are
incredible
and
they're,
always
like
Specsavers
millets,
and
that.
B
So
they
opened
these
10
units
up
to
Independence,
they
put
a
call
out
and
you
had
to
apply
for
them,
and
then
the
scheme
was
basically
two
years
rent
free,
so
that
was
again.
Another
reason
why
I
was
like
this
is
the
perfect
time
to
start
pen,
because
I
had
this
opportunity
and
I
was
like
this
is
a
perfect
time
to
start
a
business
is
not
having
all
of
these
outgoings.
Basically,
because
that
is
can
often
be.

B
Mean
what
have
you
been
up
to
I?
Think
it's
changed
in
the
sense
that
we
have
we've
like
outdone
ourselves,
really
like
I,
I
kind
of
like
was
like
oh
yeah.
Maybe
we'll
do
some
like
workshops
and
we'll
we'll
host
opening
private
views
for
these
events,
and
maybe
we'll
have
like
20
30
people
come,
but
actually
private
views
we're
seeing
like
200
people
come
wow
yeah.
It's
absolutely
ridiculous,
like
the
the
want
for
this
kind
of
thing
in
the
area
is,
is
massive.

I
guess
one
of
the
projects
was
putting
on
a
series
of
exhibitions,
but
actually
sort
of
working
with
over
17
people
to
put
on
all
these
little
shows
is
actually
all
projects
in
itself
which
all
needed
funding
and
all
needed
like
backing
and
stuff
like
that.
But
luckily
I've
worked
with
really
incredible
artists,
so
I've
sort
of
been
able
to
somehow
rank
a
little
and
work
it
all
out
and.

heard
I
mean
I've,
heard,
brilliant
feedback
from
people
have
been
taking
part
and
I.
Think
it's.
It's
inarguable
the
the
positive
impact
it's
had
on
on,
not
just
a
local
area,
but
you
know
the
wider
areas,
so
it's
brilliant
how's,
it
impacted
pen.
You
know
the
the
kind
of
the
The
Entity
itself
is
it.
You
know
what
impact
has
it
had
on
that
as.

Just
the
cost
of
your
solicitor
bills
and
I
was
like
well
I
managed
to
do
like
a
lot
of
wrangling,
I
think
actually
it
did
show
as
well
like
during
the
pandemic.
It
really
showed
what
people
were
willing
to
do
to
help
each
other
out,
because
at
the
end
of
the
day
like
we
were
all
in
the
same
situation,
we
all
wanted
to
come
back
out
of
the
pandemic
and
out
of
lockdown
into
something
on
our
High
Street
and
I
basically
said
that
to
people.

I
was
like
look
I'm,
not
we're
going
to
do
loads
of
events.
This
is
what
we're
going
to
do
like
you're
welcome
to
come
anytime.
Like
can
you
do
me
a
favor
and
people
were
like
yeah
sure,
so
without
the
bounce
back
as
well,
I,
don't
I,
don't
think.
I
would
have
gone
this
far.
Really,
if
I'm
completely
honest,
because
everything
was
on
such
shoestring.
That
actually
enabled
me
to
be
able
to.

I
mean
it
has
clearly
gone
from
strength
to
strength,
but
obviously
we're
now
facing
new
challenges:
cost
of
living,
inflationary
environment,
it's
affecting
everybody,
businesses.
People
do
you
think,
that's
helped.
Look
you
know
facing
the
the
future
challenges,
not
just
for
pen
but
I.
Suppose
the
the
work
that
you're
doing
with
the
community
and
yeah.

I
think
so
I
mean
we
definitely
give
people
an
outlet
sort
of
like
hide
away
from
reality
for
a
bit
and
I.
Think
that's
what
art
does
for
people,
so
you
can
come
and
stand
in
an
exhibition
and
kind
of
forget
that
you
may
go
home
and
your
electric
bill
is
like
five
times
the
amount
or
whatever.
So
it
definitely
helps,
and
we
have
really
tried
to
sort
of
lower
the
prices
of
workshops
and
stuff.

That
is
definitely
a
goal.
Going
forward
is
to
be
applying
for
more
funding,
but,
as
the
team
was
mainly
just
me
for
two
years,
that
kind
of
thing
was
running
the
whole
business
and
doing
all
of
that
side
has
just
not
really
been
manageable,
but
going
forward.
I
really
hope,
that's
something
we
can
do
and
really
help
sort
of
people
continue
CR
and
do
art
and
get
involved
without
having
to
sort
of
even
pay
five
pounds.

And
I
just
think
the
team
there
is
so
engaged
with
the
art,
the
local
community.
They
know
exactly
what
their
Community
wants
and
that
they're
working
with
the
right
people
and
they
are
bringing
incredible
art
to
Boston
High
Street,
which
is
probably
again
how
I,
probably
exactly
how
I
felt
when
I
was
like
I'm
gonna
put
art
and
pool
High
Street,
but
we
are
moving
in
with
them.

This
movie,
there
are
films
for
you
there
too,
but
they
also
have
a
theater
space
there,
which
is
used
by
The
Outsiders
program,
which
are
absolutely
incredible.
They
do
creative
writing
workshops
and
theater
and
music.
All
for
people
whose
voices
are
generally
unheard
in
society
I've
been
to
a
few
of
their
shows,
and
they
are
absolutely
incredible
and
so
worth
every
penny.

So
they
use
that
space
at
the
moment
and
then,
when
the
Fringe
Festival
or
the
Summer
Festival
beef
is
on.
They
use
that
in
the
summer
for
I
think
it
is
June,
June
or
July.
They
use
it
for
like
a
month
and
then
this
rest
of
the
time
the
space
is
kind
of
unused.
They
use
it
for
workshops,
but
it's
not
open
constantly.
So
pen
is
moving
in
the
store
and
exhibition
space
to
hopefully
keep
the
doors
open.
Six
days
a
week
on.

We
do
now.
Obviously
the
pen
curated
ones
will
take
a
little
bit
of
break
when
they're
doing
the
festival
ones,
but
actually
I'm.
Very
glad
of
that,
because
it
gives
me
a
bit
of
a
month
off
so,
but
the
store
space
will
constantly
be
there
as
well
and
we
can
actually
expand
our
store
space,
so
we
can
have
more
makers.
At
the
moment.
We
sport
over
100
makers.

Other
people
doing
similar
things,
yeah
and
I
think
as
soon
as
I
met
them.
I
was
like
gosh,
I
I
do
like
I've
loved
being
in
pool,
and
it
really
has
done
something
for
the
area
and
I
think
it
helped
us
beings
having
that
sort
of
USP
being
in
the
the
only
person
doing
that
thing
in
the
area,
but
actually
I,
think
across
BCP,
and
probably
the
only
person
doing
what
I
do
so
actually
moving
wasn't
wasn't
a
bad
thing
at
all
and
I
think
it's
only
going
to
be
a
positive
and
I.

I
now
actually
employ
someone
part-time,
which
I
can't
believe
I
can
actually
do
that,
which
is
feels
really
cool
and
she's
going
to
be
coming
with
me
and
moving
with
me
and
I
just
think
having
that
support
around
me
personally,
it's
just
going
to
really
change
how
I
can
work
and
my
work
ethic
and,
as
I
said
before,
like
maybe
actually
having
time
to
apply
for
more
funding
to
be
able
to
do
more.
So
it
gives
me.

It's
been,
it's
been
really
inspirational
actually
to
hear
about
your
journey,
all
that
you've
been
doing
both
in
pool
now
in
boscom
and
how
you've
used
that
bounce
back
challenge
fund
to
to
do
something,
different
and
really
get
people
interested
in
art
and
and
supporting
themselves
as
well.
