He
was
transferred
to
the
royal
welsh
fusiliers
first
garrison
battalion,
comprising
then
currently
unfit
for
active
duty
on
the
western
front.
They
left
for
gibraltar
and
gaddison
duties
in
september,
fully
recovered
and
promoted.
Corporal
joseph
davis
was
potent
to
the
10th
battalion
royal
welsh
fusiliers
in
may
1916.

were
not
engaged
on
the
notorious
first
day
july,
the
first,
but
they
were
deployed
for
the
much
more
successful
action
at
byzantine
ridge.
On
the
14th
of
july,
joseph
davis
was
to
win
his
vc
a
few
days
later
in
delville
wood,
most
of
the
village
of
longaval
had
been
captured
on
the
14th
of
july,
but
german
troops
continued
to
hold
the
neighbouring
delville
wood.

Getting
his
men
undercover
in
a
shell
hole
joseph
threw
bombs
at
the
germans
forcing
them
to
retire.
He
then
pursued
the
fleeing
enemy
bayoneting
several
on
the
same
day,
another
soldier
from
a
different
company
of
joseph's
battalion
private
albert
hill
also
won
the
vc
with
a
very
similar
feat
of
arms.

There
is
now
a
small
memorial
to
davis
and
hill
in
delville
wood,
joseph
now
promoted,
acting
sergeant
was
still
serving
on
the
somme
when
he
was
wounded
in
the
left.
Shoulder
on
the
8th
of
august
and
returned
to
the
uk
for
treatment,
the
king
presented
joseph
davis
with
his
vc
at
buckingham
palace
on
the
7th
of
october
1916.

The
military,
provost
staff
corps
or
mpsc
was
a
specialist
unit
set
up
in
1901
to
work
in
british
military
prisons.
The
mpsc
oversaw
the
introduction
of
the
more
enlightened
regime
for
prisoners
focusing
on
rehabilitation
and
retraining.
Instead
of
harsh
punishment,
mpsc
staff
had
to
be
possessed
of
the
military
spirit
and
thoroughly
efficient.
As
instructors
experienced,
non-commissioned
officers
were
considered
likely
to
prove
suitable.

He
was
also
chief
arp
warden
for
the
oakdale
district
of
poole,
joseph
and
elsie
continued
to
live
in
paul
after
the
second
world
war,
but
at
some
stage
they
moved
from
oakdale
to
a
sheltered
housing

joseph's
health
deteriorated
as
he
aged
probate
information
suggests.
He
may
have
been
admitted
to
the
queen
alexandra
hospital
home
in
worthing
sussex.

On
the
night
of
the
9th
and
10th
of
september,
advanced
elements
of
the
division
took
over
the
recently
captured
village
of
ginshi
to
prepare
for
their
first
major
action
on
the
song.
In
the
days
before
the
battle
opened.

of
alfred
pollard,
another
of
the
bournemouth-linked
vcs,
was
killed
in
action
agi,
whilst
with
the
first
italian
grenadier
guards
the
battle
of

corsalet
opened

the
15th

the
first
appearance

tanks

battle.

by
blood
he
crawled
and
staggered
back
falling
every
four
to
five
paces,
eventually
reaching
an
aid
post
fred
passed
through
the
medevac
chain
in
france
to
number
nine
base
hospital
in
ruon

one
casual

station
on
route,
he
was
treated
by
nell
chavez
of
the
royal
army
medical
corps,
who
himself
had
been
awarded
a
vc
in
august.

fred
was
admitted

king
george's
hospital
in
south
london.
His
mother
traveled
down
from
bramley
to
visit
him
fred,
began
a
course
of
reconstructive
surgery.
One
of
his
ribs
was
used
to
replace
his
jaw
on
the
9th
of
december.
1916
fred
was
driven
from
the
hospital
to
buckingham
palace
to
receive
his
victoria
cross
from
king
george.
