Well,
I
knew
the
previous
chair,
peaches,
peterson
and
her
through
her
husband
of
the
hip
head
institute,
and
I
was
excited
about
what
she
was
doing.
I'd
heard
about
mitchellville
since
the
time
I
moved
here,
something
in
the
background
that
it
was
part
of
the
history
of
hilton
head
and
she
was
focusing
on
getting
something
done,
and
I
got
excited
about
that
and
she
brought
me
on
board.

Well,
we
have
some
fantastic
people.
Our
vice
chair
is
lola
campbell,
who
is
from
an
old
family,
an
old
gullah
family
here
in
hilton
head,
the
campbell,
family
and
she's.
Also,
a
lawyer
works
in
banking.
Just
opened
a
store
in
in
gullah
goods
as
well,
so
she's,
very,
very
interesting,
dynamic
and
we're
excited
to
have
her.
We
have
margo
brown,
who
is
from
hilton
head
prep.

Well,
we
have
completed
our
master
plan
so
in
the
time
that
I've
been
on
the
board
with
peaches
leading
at
that
time,
she's
brought
on
a
wonderful
executive
director,
ahmad
board,
who
you
know
and
we've
completed
a
master
plan
and
we're
just
about
ready
to
enter
the
capital
campaign
phase,
because
funding
is
going
to
be
everything
so
we'll
be
doing
it
gradually.
We've
already
put
in
three
new
bato
boards
that
say
a
little
bit
about
the
history.

The
next
phase
will
actually
be
putting
shovels
in
and
recreating
some
of
the
houses,
some
of
the
streets,
the
historical
churches,
elements
of
those,
and
then
we
want
to
also
put
an
interpretive
center
that
will
have
programming
educational
programming
house
artifacts
bring
children
in
help
with
archaeological
digs
and
that
sort
of
nature.

Event
on
on
saturday,
which
is
juneteenth,
and
we
had
so
many
people
there
such
a
big
part,
we
could
have
had
many
more.
It
was
the
thing
to
do.
Juneteenth
is
now
a
national
holiday
and
mitchellville
had
one
of
the
greatest
celebrations.
I've
seen
so
participating
in
that
looking
at
our
website
and
then
once
we
come
up
with
our
capital
campaign.
Helping
with
that
so
that
we
have
something
visible
to
see,
touch
have
more
historical
facts
at
our
fingertips.

Since
it
is
not
part
of
the
land
that
is
part
of
mitchellville
right
now
that
has
been
leased
to
us
from
from
the
town.
We
do
not
have
plans
to
incorporate
that.
We
hope,
though,
that
we
will
will
be
instrumental
that
mitchuville
will
be
instrumental
in
bringing
together
all
of
the
gullah
not
bringing
together
but
working
together
with
everybody,
so
that
we
can
promote
all
of
it
together,
because
what
helps
one
helps
the
other.

a
wonderful
story
from
from
all
different
perspectives,

And
these
families,
we
believe,
will
continue
and
we
want
to
help
them
thrive
and
tell
their
story
and
weave
it
into
the
greater
story
within
hilton
head,
which
has
been
a
planned
community
and
mitchellville
was
the
first
planned
community
here.
So
the
story
can
continue
and
that's
what
we
want
to
do
bring
history
into
the
future.

They
will,
but
it's
marketing
is,
is
saying
what
we
have,
but
we're
also
creating
new
things.
Once
we
have
our
funding
in
place,
we
will
be
creating
programming
and
become
not
just
a
local
center,
but
a
national
center.
We
hope
for
for
ex
for
exploring
what
it
means
to
be
a
citizen,
putting
people
in
there
in
that
place
and
because
this
is
history,
it's
not
just
african-american
history
or
hilton,
head
history.
This
is
america's
history,
so
bringing
that
alive
is
not
just
marketing
it's
programming
and
and
then
feeds
off
each
other.

Well,
having
this
interpretive
center
is
going
to
be
key.
It's
it's
a
building.
It's
going
to
be
a
two-story
building,
that's
going
to
be
bigger,
bigger
than
mitchelville,
so
it's
going
to
be
national
programming,
as
I
said,
to
have
symposiums
and
events
that
really
can
discuss
not
just
what's
happening
at
mitchellville,
but
it
can
be
open
to
other
other
events
that
the
town
of
hilton
head
wants
to
have
as
well.

They've
already
started
what
we're
doing
is
aligning
interests,
so
we
have
mitchellville
stands
for
inclusivity
and
and
historic.
Cultural
tourism,
which
is
very
big
and
so
tying
that,
in
with
national
brands,
has
been
a
focus
and
that
will
be
part
of
our
unveiling
for
our
new
look
and
then
targeting
major
donors.

think
it
would
be
nice
at
some
point
to
change
it.
We
just
got
the
entrance
to
mitzvah
change
to
harriet
tubman's
way,
so
that's
been
very
exciting
for
us
and
I
think
that
it's
not
our
priority
but
having
a
change
to
something
that
reflects
all
the
history
that's
been,
there
would
be
a
very
good
move.

Well,
we
are
very
happy
with
the
town
support
lately
and
really
appreciative
of
all
that
and
our
elected
officials.
I
think
that
ahmad
works
well
with
with
the
town
and
we
did
move
from
being
a
volunteer
board.
That's
what
peaches
did
moved
us
from
being
a
volunteer
board
to
having
staff.
So,
although
we
do
have
oversight-
and
we
look
at
the
general
vision,
ahmad
is
doing
the
heavy
lifting
and
he's
working
with
you.
I
believe.

It
has
it's
known
for
its
tourism,
it's
beach,
tennis
and
golf,
and
that
in
itself,
other
than
straight
marketing
come
here
by
doesn't
have
a
value
to
it.
What
I
think
is
so
underrated
in
hilton
head
is
its
greatest
research
resource
which
is
not
beach,
tennis
or
golf,
but
the
greatest
resource
are
its
people,
and
these
people
on
hilton
head.
I've
never
seen
any
place.
That
has
people
that
are
so
interested
in
helping
others
so
community-spirited,
and
they
have
so
many
projects,
and
I
don't
know
how
or
why
to
get
national
chains
involved
in
it.

Was
absolutely
necessary,
but
we,
I
hope-
and
you
you've
been
instrumental
in
helping
this,
but
I
hope
we're
going
to
have
artist
corridors
and
people
will
come
to
hilton
head,
not
just
for
the
amenities
or
maybe
half
will
come
for
the
amenities.
Others
will
come
to
see
a
play.
We
have
two
theaters
here
and
we
have.
We
have
a
lot
more
to.

Offer
before
the
economy
went
bad,
we
were
going
to
buy
the
art
center.
Then
we
were
going
to
transfer
it
over
to
uscb,
but
the
tuition
everything
went
bad
for
them,
so
they
couldn't
take
it.
The
ultimate
goal
was
we
bought
kingfisher,
remember
the
restaurant
underwater.
We
bought
that
tour
down
and
we're
looking
at
a
couple
places
that
would
be
long
term
for
an
arts,
complex
wonderful,
I
mean
it's
great.
King
kingfisher
is
big
alone
big
parking
lot
up
there
we
own
a
lot.
We
looked.

When
I
I
was
there
two
years
ago,
last
one
before
this,
I
was
working
with
a
councilman,
and
I
said
you
know,
let's
take
a
right-hand
turn
here
and
get
out
of
the
way
and
let's
watch
what
goes
by
so
we
can
see
what's
in
the
parade
behind
us,
so
we
did
that
and
he
says
to
me:

My
feet
are
getting
wet.
We
were
close
to
the
water,
you

I
get
back
but
the
whole
parade
you
didn't
