Raise about $723 million. part of the bond money would go to seismic upgrades in school buildings.

Take a look at this graph. 13 of our 53 schools currently meet or nearly meet the district’s.

If passed,, the proposed bond would fund phase one of that work,, starting with our older.

And so, as the ground shakes in an earthquake, structures have a tendency to tip over.

The goal of our seismic upgrades is to make sure that doesn’t happen.

So one way in which we go about strengthening the buildings is to add shear (reinforced.

B

nthis is an example of a shear wall.

B

You can see it’s thinner than the posts,, often made from plywood that’s applied to.

B

Existing framed walls., what we do is we build the shear wall in-filling between the posts.

B

Then we attach the shear wall to the posts with clips at the top and the bottom of the.

B

Wall, typically.

Then we also attach the shear wall,, as well as the posts,, to the structure above, like.

So. now, as the same motion happens, the shear wall stays,, the unsupported wall does not.

So all we have to do is turn all the walls into shear walls, right?.

Luckily, we don’t have to because we hire structural engineers who help us decide where.

To install the shear walls and direct us on how we can collect the force that’s being.

Exerted on these unsupported walls.

and then we can strap the unsupported over to where we’ve added the shear wall.

So now, as one big unit,, the whole thing stays connected.

Our upgrades also include making sure the electrical service,, the fire sprinklers,, the.

Natural gas are all functional in the event of an earthquake,, as well as making sure heavier.

Elements such as ceilings and lighting don’t fall down as an earthquake. Happens.

That is a very simple explanation of why and how we implement seismic upgrades on our buildings.

The proposed bond is estimated to initially cost taxpayers approximately $2.34 per $1,000.

A

Of assessed value and decline over time.
