Description

The Facilities Development team is wrapping up a multi-year, multi-phase renovation and expansion project at Five Oaks/Rachel Carson Middle School.

The renovation provides improved classroom layout, while increasing natural light. It includes new science labs and support areas, a remodeled library and restrooms and expansion of teaching areas. The administration area has been relocated to provide a more secure front entrance, and new access control has been added throughout the building.

Our major construction started in the summer of 2018.. This was a phased construction project while it was occupied, so each wing we had to finish and then the kids would move to another wing and we'd start that wing to construct. So it was a logistical challenge for sure. The biggest change I think from the school's perspective, was to remove the portables in the north side of the school and bring all of the kids back inside of the building in the scope of the project. We added six classrooms to the building footprint.

Those spaces have a lot of natural light. We reconfigured how the classrooms are accessed. So now, when you go to the classroom, you actually have to walk down a corridor and enter through a secure door to get into each classroom. The office was located in the middle of the building. People had to enter through the extra building and then find their way to the office to check in so it was a security issue. We relocated the administration area over to the exterior of the building.

People that enter the building have to go through a secure access, vestibule, where they have to buzz in before they're allowed into the building. All of the student restrooms have been updated with new tile and new fixtures and new lighting. This is one of the examples of the graphics that we've incorporated into the design of the project. It was a collaborative effort between the principal and a small group of teachers that she put together to come up with the words that would inspire the students.

Then our architects designed a graphic that would incorporate that and the the logos of the trees, the five oaks to try to tie that into the history of the building as well. It's also a great pop of color in the in the corridors to help liven up the space which we would normally see is just more of a utilitarian space. The library is the heart of the school, but it was very dated.

It had multiple areas that were supervision issues here, a lot of unused space. We added a humongous skylight in this space to bring in natural light into the center of the building, and we updated all of the finishes and lighting and furnishings in the space. The kids just love this space. They actually look forward to coming here if they have the opportunity during the day. It's it's a wonderful.
