From YouTube: Lake to Lake - August, 2023
Description
In our August edition of Lake to Lake, we'll bring you up to date on the State of the City with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, share somme highlights from
the annual Juneteenth event at City Hall, get an up close look at how first responders and schools are working to educated teens on the dangers of distracted driving, and more.
A
Hi
there
and
welcome
to
Lake
to
Lake.
This
is
a
show
about
our
beautiful
city
of
Bellevue
and
I'm.
Your
host
today,
Michelle
degrand.
You
know
Bellevue
has
a
lot
of
people
behind
the
scenes,
including
here
at
City
Hall
working
hard
to
ensure
a
strong
future
for
the
city
in
June.
Our
mayor
and
Deputy
Mayor
sat
down
for
an
in-depth
look
at
how
these
efforts
are
contributing
to
the
state
of
our
city
today,
and
our
plans
for
the
future
on
this
edition
of
Lake
to
Lake.
A
B
I'm
Patrick
Bannon
with
the
Bellevue
Downtown
Association.
This
is
a
very
wonderful
tradition
that
we've
been
able
to
build
over
time
to
bring
the
state
of
the
city
presentation
in
partnership
with
the
city
and
Bellevue
is
privileged
to
have
access
exceptional
leaders
in
mayor
Lynn,
Robinson
and
Deputy
Mayor
Jared
newenhouse.
B
We
asked
a
few
people
in
conversations
over
the
last
week
for
their
observations
about
these
two
leaders.
Here's
what
I
heard
they
make
the
time
they
take
the
meeting
they
show
up.
They
take
accountability,
learn
from
the
past.
They
give
us
Vision.
They
engage
the
community
to
listen,
then
address
core
needs.
B
C
I
just
want
to
start
by
saying
that
bellevue's
small
businesses
are
really
the
heart
and
soul
of
our
community.
You
know
that
97
of
business
in
Bellevue
is
small
business,
so
it's
so
important
that
we
do
what
we
need
to
do
to
support
that
and
to
continue
attracting
businesses.
I
want
to
thank
our
staff
at
City
Hall
in
our
Economic
Development
Department,
for
all
the
work
that
they
do
to
support
our
businesses
as
a
government.
C
D
Safe
Community
is,
is,
is
important
and
matters
to
all
of
us.
We
have
the
new
Fire
Station
coming
in
fire
station
number
10..
This
will
be
really
important
in
terms
of
a
response
times,
but
also
a
team
specifically
trained
to
deal
with
fires
and
high-rises.
So
that's
going
to
be
outstanding
once
once
that
opens
up
in
the
next
in
the
next
year
or
so.
We've
made
a
significant
investment
in
our
Bellevue
Police
Department.
During
this
last
budget
season,
we
have
21
new
positions
and
19
officers,
new
officers
all
coming
to
the
city
of
Bellevue.
C
I
will
tell
you
that
the
city
has
made
a
commitment
to
creating
35
000
new
units
of
housing
by
2044,
which
seems
like
a
lot,
but
that's
actually
the
easy
part.
We
have
room
to
grow.
We
have
the
Bell
red,
we
have
Eastgate,
we
still
have
downtown,
we
have
Wilburton,
but
what's
going
to
be,
tough,
is
creating
a
housing
in
all
affordabilities,
so
making
sure
that
we
have
that
full
spectrum
of
Housing
and
we're
doing
that.
D
Well,
I
mean
bottom
line,
I.
Think
Bellevue
still
is
that
a
place
where
residents
and
workers
want
to
be?
We
still
have
that
high
quality
environment,
the
high
quality
services
bellevue's
still
seen
as
a
fantastic
investment,
Brokers
and
businesses
globally.
Believe
Bellevue
is
still
amongst
the
best
and
top
destinations
in
the
country.
That'll
especially
increase,
especially
when
more
and
more
companies
go
back
to
actually
to
the
office
on.
B
C
So
many
people
are
here
because
of
their
kids,
and
so
many
of
these
people
really
can't
afford
to
live
here,
they're
paying
more
than
30
percent
of
their
salary
just
to
be
in
this
city.
That's
considered
a
city
of
opportunity.
They
know
that
their
kids
can
get
in
the
Bellevue
School
District
that
they're
going
to
succeed
in
life,
and
so
my
big
goal
is
to
make
sure
that
all
our
children
are
housed
I'm.
C
B
D
Is
a
place
to
do
great
things
and
I'm,
not
necessarily
talking
about
getting
a
great
job
at
meta
or
at
Amazon.
Even
those
are
great
things:
okay,
but
more
and
more
I
think
if
you're
establishing
a
non-profit
if
you're,
establishing
a
new
restaurant,
a
new
coffee
shop,
whatever
it
might
be
more
and
more
people
see
Bellevue
as
the
place
to
establish
it.
And
why
is
that?
Because
I
think
they
know
that
if
they
come
here
and
they
establish
their
business
or
organization
or
non-profit,
they
know
that
they
will
have
a
welcoming
City.
D
A
We
have
the
complete
event
available
on
the
Bellevue
television
YouTube
channel
or
on
cable
channel
21..
Next,
on
the
show
Juneteenth
is
America's,
newest
federal
holiday.
It
commemorates
the
official
end
to
slavery
in
the
United
States
in
1865..
Nearly
three
years
after
President
Lincoln
signed
the
Emancipation
Proclamation,
our
annual
Juneteenth
event
at
City
Hall
offered
an
opportunity
to
reflect
on
the
work
still
to
do
to
advance
equity
and
on
what
we
can
do
as
individuals
to
create
strong
and
inclusive
communities.
E
Juneteenth,
as
you've
heard,
celebrates
the
recognized
and
official
abolishment
of
slavery
in
the
United
States
that
all
people,
no
matter
their
color,
were
and
always
will
be
free
from
the
chains
of
Chateau
slavery.
We
must
never
forget
that
shameful
period
in
our
country's
history,
when
black
men,
women
and
children
were
legally
not
equal,
but
were
the
rightful
property
of
another
person.
E
F
I
was
thinking
about
this
question.
What
can
an
individual
do?
What
can
one
individual
do?
A
single
person
I
was
thinking
about
the
African-American
experience.
My
experience
growing
up
black,
my
sister
actually
is
in
the
audience,
so
you
can
verify
this
story,
but
storytelling
is
a
very
important
part
of
our
culture
and
that's
how
we
got
these
stories
as
they
came
down
through
generations.
We
need
to
continue
sharing
our
experience,
our
stories,
our
history,
with
our
people
community.
G
G
She
has
a
wonderful
talk
that
she
gives
about
the
difference
between
allyship
and
co-conspiratorship
and
I.
Remember,
for
a
long
time,
I
work
in
higher
ed
and
I've
been
in
the
education
space.
For
a
long
time,
people
will
always
come
by.
Can
I
get
one
of
those
Ally
ship
stickers?
No,
you
may
not
we're
not
ordering
them
anymore,
we're
not
giving
them
out,
because
you
don't
get
to
designate
yourself
as
an
ally.
I
get
to
tell
you
whether
or
not
you
have
been
an
allyship
with
me.
G
And
then
I'm,
not
that
interested
in
allyship
I
want
co-conspiratorship
if
I'm
going
to
jail
for
this
protest.
You
jumping
in
in
front
of
me,
because
we
all
have
layers
of
privilege
and
frankly,
cisgender
heterosexual,
white
men.
Y'all
have
the
most
stacked
up
layered
privileges,
whether
you
want
to
admit
it
or
not.
That's
what
it
is
when
Dr
Bettina
love
gave
talked
about
the
story
about
Bree
Newsome,
the
black
woman,
who
climbed
up
a
flagpole
and
decided
to
take
down
the
Confederate
flag.
The
whole
story
goes
on.
G
G
G
H
So
you
know,
when
you
ask
the
question
about
allyship:
I
mean
that's.
The
first
example
that
comes
to
my
mind
is
the
case
selection
of
larger
firms
and
doing
pro
bono
work.
That's
going
to
you
know,
impact
Society
on
you
know
more
systemic
type
level.
A
If
you'd
like
to
see
the
entire
discussion,
you
can
find
it
on
our
Bellevue
television,
YouTube
channel
or
on
cable
channel
21..
As
many
areas
in
our
nation
bake
in
record-breaking
and
sustained
high
temperatures
managing
our
water
supply
has
become
perhaps
more
critical
than
ever.
With
the
recent
completion
of
the
new
Pikes
Peak
Reservoir
in
the
Bridal
Trails
neighborhood
Bellevue
residents
now
have
an
upgraded
water
storage
system.
That's
large
enough
and
strong
enough
to
serve
generations
to
come.
Here's
Michaeline
Fowler
with
Bellevue
utilities,
with
more.
I
I
This
Reservoir
was
constructed
within
the
same
footprint
as
the
existing
Reservoir
in
order
to
require
less
maintenance
and
less
disruption
to
the
neighboring
communities.
There
are
two
important
things
to
know
about
this
new
reservoir
one.
It
offers
increased
capacity.
The
new
Reservoir
can
hold
up
to
1.25
million
gallons
of
water.
The
second
is
earthquake
protection.
This
concrete
structure
was
still
cabling
is
designed
to
help
ensure
the
structure
is
still
standing
in
an
earthquake.
I
A
Thanks
Micheline,
it's
great
to
know
that
we're
planning
so
far
in
advance
for
our
water
system.
You
know
another
thing
that
requires
planning
driving
many
of
us
get
into
a
car
and
drive
nearly
every
day
without
thinking
much
about
it,
but
sadly,
in
2022
we
saw
the
most
traffic
deaths
on
Washington
roads
in
more
than
30
years.
One
easy
crash
prevention
step
is
planning
ahead
to
avoid
distracted
driving
in
June,
Bellevue
police
and
fire
presented
a
simulated
vehicle
crash
resulting
from
distracted
driving
to
the
students
at
Newport
High
School.
A
J
K
J
G
J
Driver
of
the
car
that
wasn't
paying
attention
he's
totally
fine
he's
all
good.
It
worked
out
good
for
him.
This
guy
right
here
he's
got
an
open
leg
practice.
She
in
the
front
seat
she's
got
a
closed
head
injury
in
minutes,
she'll
be
dead.
The
blood
is
pooling
in
her
brain
there's,
nothing.
We
could
do.
J
Here
this
back
door's
jam
with
people
getting
big
accidents,
these
doors
get
sealed
they
get
in
trapped.
So
even
if
someone's
dying
imminently,
I
can't
just
reach
in
and
yank
somebody
out,
we
have
to
tear
these
doors
off.
What
they're
walking
up
with
right
now
is
something
called
the
jaws
of
life,
basically
their
hydraulic
tool
that
enable
them
to
make
an
access
point
to
get
this
guy
out
of
this
vehicle.
J
J
E
L
Sorry,
the
driver
of
that
car
is
getting
handcuffs
put
on
them,
because
if
you
drive
distracted
and
you
cause
an
accident,
you
can
be
arrested
for
homicide,
vehicular
homicide.
Somebody
is
seriously
injured,
vehicular
assault
and
if
somebody
dies,
vehicular
homicide
that
is
homicide,
and
that
is
prison.
They
changed
the
law
and
call
it
edui,
because
driving
on
your
cell
phone
is
just
as
dangerous
as
being
a
drunk
driver.
L
For
years,
we
at
the
police
department
would
be
going
to
their
house
to
now
tell
the
parents
of
some
of
these
kids
that
they're
they're
never
coming
home
the
brothers
and
sisters
that
their
their
loved
one
just
died,
or
that
their
family
was
severely
injured
to
your
friends
that
tomorrow,
you're
going
to
be
talking
about
in
school
that
are
aren't
going
to
be
here.
So
this
isn't
a
thing
that
ends
when
we
leave
this
parking
lot
today.
L
This
is
something
that
goes
on
for
the
next
few
years
and
for
some
of
the
families,
it's
something
that
goes
on
forever.
When
you
lose
a
loved
one
it
it
changes
your
life
for
the
rest
of
your
life,
I've
heard
it
a
hundred
times.
It
would
never
happen
to
me
and
it
absolutely
will
never
happen
to
you
right
up
until
the
day
it
does.
A
Thank
you
to
our
First
Responders
and
schools
for
taking
the
time
to
put
on
these
events
as
a
way
to
help
keep
our
kids
safe.
Well,
that's
all
for
this
month's
Lake
to
Lake.
