The latest episode of Lake to Lake, showcases some ways the City of Bellevue is using technology to help increase access for all with:
- Tablet computers to help reduce language barriers;
- Assisted listening devices that are helping the hearing impaired and those with limited English be more engaged at community events; and
- New wheelchair stations that provide opportunities for wheelchair users to stay engaged in the community.

Hello and welcome to a special edition of lake to lake a show about our.

Beautiful city of bellevue., I'm your host robin steel. today we're coming to you.

A

From bellevue city hall, to showcase some of the ways the city is using technology.

A

To help engage with our community. on this episode of lake to lake, we feature.

A

A new tool for language translation; assistive listening devices to help.

A

Those with hearing loss; and some new wheelchair charging stations., we begin.

A

Here at service first, to show you some ways: technology is helping visitors with.

A

Limited english, better connect with city staff.. What we purchased was a system.

B

Called that translator ,which is a pair of tablets that allow 2-way.

B

Communication for instant translation between two people speaking different.

B

Languages., let me show you how it works., so these two tablets are linked ., so each.

B

User selects their language,, so I can select chinese over here and english.

B

Over here., then you speak into the tablet and then it will translate into.

B

The other tablet. hello. welcome to city hall-and. Then it will translate.

B

Instantly onto this tablet in chinese. and the reverse can happen for the other.

B

User ( speaking chinese).

B

...And then, like so,, it will translate back into the.

B

Other language., so another way to communicate, is through written form,. So.

B

Both users will select their primary language., so I can select english over.

B

Here. then ben here will select persian and then we simply write those things that.

B

We want to communicate., the system is capable of translating in several dozen.

B

Languages. language is often a barrier for people receiving services from the.

B

From the city,, so this system allows us to start that conversation and connect.

B

With people who don't speak english. next, we showcase some more technology.

A

That's helping those with hearing challenges or limited english, be more.

A

Engaged at community events. we're very excited to offer this for our city.

Residents have these interpretation headsets that they can put on when they.

C

Attend the event and sit anywhere that they need to during the event and be.

C

Able to really participate and listen to what's going on in, in whatever.

C

Programming or event that they're attending in their own language.. So as.

C

Soon, as you attend will have the headsets available., so it just turns on.

C

And you put on the headset and you are: there live listening to it in your own.

C

Language. residents can call our service first.

C

Desk to request the service., in addition to that, many of our events, fliers.

C

Usually have a contact number,, and so they can call that contact number and.

C

That staff member can secure the device and the interpretation.

C

Service., we are asking residents to request this service at least 48 hours.

C

In advance or more., the service really is twofold: it's both securing these.

C

Headsets as well as hiring a professional interpreter on-site. so for.

C

Language interpretation ,it would be chinese,, so cantonese and mandarin,.

C

Spanish, korean,russian and vietnamese.. So if residents speak any of those.

C

Languages-And, I may add that any other languages, those are just our top five.

C

Languages-, we can certainly accommodate that so that they're able to participate.

C

In these events., another resource that we are providing for residents is the.

C

Ability to call directly to an interpreter with a toll-free number that.

C

Gets connected here to the city in our top languages.. In addition to these.

C

Interpretation headsets,. We also have available headsets for those who are.

C

Deaf or hard of hearing., we actually have the headsets readily available outside.

C

Our council chambers. we've got hearing loop systems built into our city council.

C

Chambers- in bellevue youth theatre, as well as in.

C

Our study chambers.. This is really enabling us to ensure that all our.

C

Residents have access to our services and programs and are able to participate.

C

Another way bellevue is helping. People stay connected is with some new.

Wheelchair charging, stations. ada title vi, administrator, blayne, amson.

Explains. well, the thought behind it was was to really recognize that it's.

Important that no matter where people are it's scary, to run out of power. using.

D

A power wheelchair it can happen. you've been out. All day, you've been doing what you need to do- and suddenly your chair starts to run.

D

Low on power., it creates an anxiety,so. We really.

D

Wanted to alleviate that anxiety and they encouraged people to be able to.

D

Stay engaged in their community.. This charging station here at city hall, is.

D

Located in a really convenient location- right across from council chambers,.

D

Meaning that you can charge your chair while watching council and stay.

D

Engaged., let me show you how it works. it''s as simple as taking this cord and.

D

Plugging it in right here under your joystick. you'll hear that beep and you.

D

Know it's charging.. What this does is it tells people who use wheelchairs and.

D

People with disabilities on the whole-, we see you, we recognize your needs.. We.

D

Recognize that you're an important part of the community and we can provide you.

D

The supports that you need. so at the city of bellevue,. That's something that's.

D

So important in the work that we do.if we're going to say, people with.

D

Disabilities are part of what makes the diversity great here in bellevue,, then we.

D

Need to provide them the supports that they need to be able to stay engaged.. The.

D

Charging stations are here at city hall,, but we also have a charging station at.

D

Crossroads community center, highland community center ,northwest arts, center,.

D

North bellevue and south bellevue community centers. there's another reason.

D

Why we chose the locations that we chose, and that is in the case of an emergency.

D

If any were designated as shelter locations during the time of an.

D

Emergency,, you would be able to go to that community center and because of our backup, generators, you'd, be able to.

D

Charge your chair. imagine how important that is for a.

D

Wheelchair user. to find out more information about the wheelchair.

The weather's getting cooler but there's still lots of great outdoor events, (and.

Some indoor ones!) to enjoy this fall. here's a look.

October 25th, through november 3rd,, see the phantom tollbooth at the bellevue.

Youth theater. packed full of playful puns and lots of fun,. The show is sure to.
