Cole,
the
director
of
the
Department
of
youth
engagement,
employment
with
the
city
of
Boston
I,
have
here
with
me
on
to
my
right,
Eduardo
Franco,
and
what
a
Franco
is
our
manager,
programs
and
partnerships
who
was
primarily
responsible
for
administering
our
youth
works
budget
during
our
Summer
Youth
Employment
Program,
and
to
my
left.

our
youth
and
career
development
Nader,
who
was
primarily
responsible
for
the
implementation
of
our
career
development
programming
within
our
office,
so
I'll
just
open
up
I'm,
just
giving
a
very
brief
overview
of
the
YouthWorks
funding.
I
think
you
guys
should
have
a
copy
of
this
overview
with
you
all
so
I'll
go
through
this
very
quickly
and
if
there
are
any
specific
questions
about
the
use
of
the
funds,
then
we'll
be
able
to
answer
any
of
those
questions.
How
does
that
sound?

I'm
great
so
the
the
YouthWorks
funding
it's
awarded
to
us
as
an
annual
grant
through
the
youth
works
program
through
the
Commonwealth
Corporation
of
Massachusetts,
and
the
grant
is
intended
to
provide
low-income,
teens
and
young
adults
between
the
ages
of
14
to
21
years
of
age.
What
their
first
employment
experience
is:
workforce
readiness,
training
and
really
skills
to
find
and
keep
an
unsubsidized
job.
This
is
really
important
for
us,
because
we
know
that
there
are
a
significant
number
of
vulnerable
youth.

You
know
that
live
within
the
city
of
Boston
and
typically
it
is
not
very
easy
for
the
vulnerable
population
to
find
meaningful
work,
readiness
opportunities
so
through
the
mayor,
success
link
youth
jobs
program
where
we
employ
nearly
3200
young
people
during
the
summer
months.
We
utilize
this
funding
specifically
to
ensure
that
we
are
targeting
those
disadvantaged
young
people,
those
vulnerable
youth
who
otherwise
may
not
have
an
opportunity
to
receive
summer
employment.

So
this
this
funding
is
a
partnership,
as
mentioned
with
Commonwealth
Corporation,
but
there
are
some
other
youth
job
providers
who
are
also
receiving
the
similar
funding
to
provide
employment
opportunities
to
the
same
population,
and
that
is
ABCD,
and
that
is
Boston.
Private
industry
Council,
which
is
Boston
pick,
and
that
is
while
you,
which
is
Auto
WD
office
of
Workforce,
Development
Boston,.

So
the
way
that
this
funding
on
the
weight
of
the
eligibility
of
this
funding
works
is
we
are
required
to
one
serve
twenty
percent
of
our
population
that
our
participants,
through
this
funding,
are
intended
to
be
vulnerable
youth.
So
that's
quite
involved:
DUI
has
committed
gang
involved,
juvenile
homelessness
or
being
a
runaway.
So
that's
twenty
percent
of
our
population
and
then
the
other
80
percent.

So
it's
actually
so
it's
20,
so
you
as
twenty
percent
of
this
grant,
so
you
have
20
percent
of
this
grant,
is
for
the
vulnerable,
youth
and
then
Commonwealth.
Corporation
has
two
terminology
called
wrist
barrier,
youth,
which
is
young
people
who
are
performing
poorly
in
school.
So
it's
poor
academic
performance.
They
could
be
considered
a
school
dropout,
they
could
be
a
child
of
a
single
parent.
They
could
have
a
disability,
they
could
lack
of
fluency
in
English,
so
that
can
be
an
immigrant
youth
being
a
foreign
immigrant
or
being
a
teen
parent.

We
hired
eight
career
development,
coaches
that
worked
in
our
office
to
facilitate
career
development
workshops
and
programs
for
these
427
young
people
and
we
hired
two
senior
career
coaches.
So
the
senior
career
coaches
were
responsible
for
working
directly
with
the
eight
career
development
coaches
to
implement
this
model
throughout
the
summer.

throughout
this
grant
the
sinal
Success
curriculum
is
a
mandated
curriculum
that
we
are
required
to
administer
to
the
young
people
to
the
youth
participants
of
this
of
this
funding
and
the
15
hours
of
the
synopsis
s
curriculum
are
focused
on
a
variety
of
different
topics.
You
guys
have
a
list
of
them
in
front
of
you,
so
the
young
people
they
received
workshops
around
effective
communication,
around
professionalism
and
dependability
around
workplace
safety,
finding
apply
into
jobs
and
a
host
of
other
very,
very
important
work.
Readiness
workshops
throughout
the
program.

I'm,
so
the
mall,
so
we
John
Hancock,
does
this.
Currently,
with
their
mo
k,
Scholars
Program,
John
Hancock
met
with
us
and
said:
hey.
We
want
to
expand
this
to
other
young
people
that
are
working
across
the
city
of
Boston,
so
we
partnered
with
John
Hancock
to
introduce
the
same
curriculum
to
the
young
people
that
are
working
through
our
probes.
So.

Correct
and
then
lastly,
we
formed
a
new
partnership
this
summer,
with
what
Boston,
Public,
Schools,
Boston,
Public
Schools,
had
a
program
called
transition,
hope
and
transition
hope.
What's
really
a
program,
particularly
for
core
in
gang
involve
young
people
that
attend
bps
school.
So
we
partnered
with
on
bps
to
allow
them
to
employ
those
same
young
people
that
they're
working
with
throughout
the
school
year
during
the
summer
months,
and
these
on
young
people
participated
in
our
career
development
program
as
well,
so
that
that's
just
a
very
brief
overview
of
just
how
the
funding
was
used
again.

what
are

particularly
that?
What
are
the
jobs?
That
is
it
still.
You
know
we
always
call
it
the
red
shirts
or
whatever,
whatever
color
shirt
it
was.
There
are
those
the
jobs
were
talking
about.
It
is
parking
lots
and
we
expand
on
maybe
some
of
the
jobs
that
are
available
to
the
young
kids.

Sure
so
we
had
we
had
a
variety
of
jobs
as
summer
for
our
youth,
just
in
the
entire
program,
not
just
for
the
427
that
were
part
of
this
grant,
something
we
we
strive,
and
we
have
conversations
constantly
about
how
to
continue
to
provide
this.

diverse
number
of
opportunities
for
young
people,
I
mean
I.
Think
just
if
you
look
at
our
pool
of
partners,
I
think
you
will
find
there
is
a
diverse
set
of
opportunities
that
we
provide.
So
there
is
still
some
you
know.

lot
of
them
are
still
very
much
camp
counselor
jobs
working
with
children
where
there's
a
peer
leader
as
a
tutor,
but
there
was
also
other
opportunities
where
young
people,
for
example,
where
we're
taught
how
to
how
to
teach
other
other
people
about
math
through
the
the
calculus
project,
which
was
a
new
partnership
that
we
have.
We
also
just
try
to
elevate,
continue
to
elevate
the
work
of
nonprofits
in
the
City
of
Boston,
so
place
elements
of
my
administrative
roles
within
those
nonprofits
but
I
think
the
bulk
of
them.

moved
away

the
registrar's

mean

years
ago,
and
the
program
primarily
works
with
nonprofit
community-based
organizations.
So
that's
where
a
lot
of
the
young
people
are
employed
at

us

among
and
some
of
the
jobs,
as
you
can
see
here
in
the
overview,
is
the
Freedom
House,
its
mothers
for
justice
and
equality,
Roxbury
tenants
of
Harvard
bikes,
Not
Bombs,
ASA,
dome,
Catholic
Charities
bps
strive
program,
which
is
a
program
for
students
with
disabilities.

the
exact
number
for

but
we
do
place
probably
between
20
and
30
young
people
that
work
here
in
City
Hall,
so
those
jobs
right
now
are
being
streamlined
through
the
office
of
Human
Resources
the
office
of
human
resources.
They
are
I,
think
meeting
with
different
city
departments
to
get
an
idea
which
departments
would
like
young
people
to
work
here
during
the
summer
months
and
they
would
assign
the
young
people
to
particular
city
departments.

that
is
happening.

partnerships,
but

I
think

partnerships

top

that

We
don't
but
the

are
other
streams
and
there
are
other
organizations
offer
the
Workforce
Development.
They
may
get
some
private
funding
to
pick,
which
is
not
a
city
entity
as
you're
aware
of
there
are
some
private
dollars
that
come
through
them,
so
we're
not
essentially
getting
private
dollars
draw
program.
However,
this
summer,
what
we
did
do
is
we
work
with
the
and
we're
still
hashing
this
out.

We
initiated
a
partnership
with
the
Office
of
Economic
Development
to
in
our
attempt
to
pilot
a
real
estate
pathway
program
to
begin
to
introduce
young
people
to
Korea's
in
real
estate.
So
there
were
some
private
dollars
that
came
in
from
some
of
those
real
estate
companies,
but
that
was
for
only
about
six
young
people
so
that
we
we
can
begin
to
see.
You
know
if
this
pathway
model
works
and
if
there
are
ways
in
which
we
can
replicate
it.

school
year
so
where
we
just
finished
up
the
Summer
Youth
Employment
Program,
so
for
school
year,
we
will
be
releasing
a
Youth
application
sometime
around
October
and
the
youth
school
yeah.
Youth
program
will
will
begin
in
November
about
the
second
third
week
in
November,
and
it
will
run
all
the
way
through
the
end
of
April
and
then
our
summer
of
2020.

relationships

not
just
a
boyfriend/girlfriend
relationship
or
that
sort
of
relationship.
It's

relationships
and
work

relationships
in
the
school
yard
is
that

employment
partners
here

city,
the
Boston
pick
ABCD,
M,
ok,
scholars
and
I
believe
this
has
been
an
ongoing
survey
that
happens
every
summer
around
youth
jobs
that
measure
some
similarities,
but
also
messages.
What
would
happen
if
that
you
didn't
have
a
job,
what
other
opportunity
they
might
have
or
if
they
feel
like
they
just
wouldn't
have
any
at
all.
So
we
do.
We
do
both
of
those
and.

Their
Minister
very
differently.
The
single
success
survey
is
done
by
the
career
coaches,
while
they're
actually
doing
the
workshops,
whereas
the
survey
coming
out
of
our
office
again
with
northeastern
support
is
something
that
we
send
via
email
prior
to
the
program
starting
and
then
we
continue
to
work
with
our
partners
where
our
young
people
are
working
to
communicate
the
survey
to
them,
and
then
we
also
email
email,
the
post
survey
at
the
end
of
the
program
yeah.
So
at
this
point,
we're
still
gathering
data
from
that
post
survey
and
hopes
to
just
get
some.
