At one of these ceremonies, Mayor Wu gathered with retired and current firefighters at the Vendome Hotel Fire Memorial, to honor brave firefighters who lost their lives on both 9/11 and the 1972 Vendrome Hotel Fire.

Following flight attendant Amanda Sweeney's brave acts, which provided invaluable information in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, Massachusetts created a ceremony in her honor. At the 16th Annual Sweeney Award Ceremony, Governor Baker, Mayor Walsh, Speaker DeLeo, police officers, politicians, and clergy gathered at the State House to honor the lives lost on September 11th, and award the Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery to Jaden Dancy, whose mother accepted on his behalf.
