From YouTube: East Boston Senior Center Announcement
Description
Big, happy smiles greeted the news that East Boston will finally get its long awaited senior center! Mayor Walsh joined City Councilor Lydia Edwards, Age Strong Commissioner Emily Shea, Alaina Coppola of Massport, and many others at the Paris St. Community Center to announce the exciting plans.
A
Welcome
everybody:
can
everybody
hear
with
the
headphones
yeah?
Okay,
so
I
hope
you
are
all
as
excited
as
me
to
be
here
today.
My
name
is
Emily
Shay
I'm,
the
Commissioner
for
the
city's
aged
strong
Commission
and
I'll
be
serving
as
your
MC
today.
So,
as
you
all
know,
today
we
are
starting
the
community
process
for
the
East
Boston
Senior
Center
that
will
be
housed
at
the
old
Orion
Heights
library.
A
Today,
we'll
hear
from
the
mayor,
our
elected
officials
Massport
a
couple
of
the
older
adults
that
will
be
going
to
the
center
and
have
been
involved.
We'll
learn
more
about
that.
We'll
we'll
hear
we'll
move
into
the
architects
presentation
here
about
the
process
and
timeline
and
learn
more
about
the
building
and
then
we'll
hear
your
thoughts.
So
your
input
is
a
valuable
part
of
this
process
and
we
want
to
thank
you
all
for
coming
today.
A
So
it
is
my
pleasure
to
introduce
our
mayor
one
of
the
things
I
love
about
the
mayor
is
his
commitment
to
the
community
and
to
making
sure
that
we
are
all
focused
that
his
whole
team
is
focused
on
listening
to
what
people
want
and
then
making
Boston
a
city,
that's
good
to
live
in
and
also
good
to
aging.
And
so
please
join
me
in
a
very
warm
welcome
for
mayor
Walsh.
B
I
was
just
talking
to
councilor
woods
like
I
was
reaching
in
my
pocket
to
pull
my
cards
and
I
forgot
them
in
the
car.
So
I'm
going
off
the
cuff
here.
First
of
all,
I
want
to
thank
everyone
for
coming
out
today.
I'm
gonna
get
to
East
Boston
in
a
second
I
want
to
thank
the
elected
officials.
I
want
to
thank
City
Council
of
the
Edwards
I
want
to
thank
Adrian
Mauro
I
want
to
thank
Jeff
encore
for
their
help
and
their
work
on
this.
B
This
has
truly
been
a
collaboration
of
getting
this
Center
up
and
running
and
moving
forward.
It
started
and
I
want
to
thank
all
I
want
to
thank
Emily
think
that
I
want
a
mass
support
for
your
great
work.
If
we
didn't
have
mass
support
as
a
partner,
this
would
not
be
happening.
I
want
to
thank
Lisa,
will
and
I
know.
We
have
representatives
of
mass
support
here.
I
want
to
thank
I
want
to
thank
property
construction
management
in
the
City
of
Austin
for
your
work,
Trish
lines.
Thank
you
for
this
work
and
Pat.
B
Thank
you
for
what
you've
done
here
and
everyone
else
for
your
team.
I
want
to
thank
Sheila,
Dillon
and
her
team
at
housing
for
the
great
work
that
they
have
done
as
well.
I
want
to
thank
my
remarks.
It's
all
right.
It's
don't
think.
Brian
I
wanted
a
Brian,
forgive
my
remarks
just
like
everyone
here
Elena.
Thank
you
for
mass
support.
B
Eight
strong
Commission,
Emily,
Shea,
Thank
You
Emily
for
for
being
here
today,
ok,
2014
I
was
brand
new
mayor
of
Boston
and
I
walked
into
Spinelli's
and
I
was,
you
know,
thought
this
is
going
to
be
a
great
day.
It's
celebrating
that
I'm,
the
new
mayor
of
the
city
and
I'm
excited
and
I
walk
around
and
I
get
stopped
by
a
couple
of
young
women.
That
said
to
me
with
their
finger
in
my
face.
B
We
don't
have
a
proper
place
of
seniors
in
East,
Boston
and
I
said
okay
and
I
said
well.
What
does
that
mean
and
I
said
what
wolves,
try
and
figure
that
out
and
I
said
well,
we'll
work
out
something
we
want
a
Senior,
Center
and
I
said.
Let
me
go
back
and
check
and
I
went
back
to
my
office
and
I
forgot
to
check
and
I
think
it
was,
it
might
have
been.
B
People
didn't
have
the
opportunity
to
get
to
having
proper
senior
centers
and
the
senior
centers
that
we
have
in
the
city
of
Boston
are
rightfully
so
East
Boston
in
Brighton,
and
we
talked
about
creating
an
opportunity
and
we
immediately
sat
down.
We
identified
a
building,
we
made
we're
making
an
investment
there.
We
figured
out
how
we're
gonna
pay
for
this.
We
contacted
Massport,
we
contacted
the
state
delia
delegation.
B
Here
we
started
sitting
down,
it
changed
a
bit,
Joe
came
and
Adrian
came
in
and
Lydia
came
in
and
we
all
worked
together
collectively
to
make
sure
this
happened,
and
today
today
is
a
big
day
for
eesti
for
a
lot
of
different
reasons.
We're
excited
about
moving
forward
on
the
investment
here
to
have
a
community
center
I
want
to
thank
Manny
from
the
Health
Center
I
want
to
thank
all
the
different
people
here
who
have
helped
make
this
a
reality.
I
want
to
take
Joe
boos
here
from
the
community
groups.
B
I
want
to
thank
lieutenant
mountain
here
from
the
police
department,
the
CSO
office.
This
truly
is
an
amazing
community
here
in
East
Boston
I
want
to
thank
Eagle.
Hill
I
won't
take
all
the
civic
groups
out
of
here,
because
you
all
rallied
around
to
make
this
a
reality
today.
Now
it
took
a
little
time,
there's
some
complications.
We,
what
I
thought
we
were
gonna
do,
is
go
into
a
building
and
do
a
quick
paint
job
and
get
it
going,
and
we
realized
that
we
have
to
upgrade
the
building
and
put
more
invested
in
the
building.
B
So
this
that
crosses
$167,000
is
now
crossing
I,
don't
know
what
the
price
is
it's
not
here,
but
the
important
part
of
this
is
is
our
age,
strong,
Commission,
led
by
Emily
Shay,
understands
and
always
has
understood
the
important
contributions
to
our
city
by
our
older
Bostonians,
our
older
residents,
the
men
and
women
I'm.
Looking
at
here
who
were
building
the
center
for
you,
you
are
the
men
and
women
who
built
this
community.
You
were
the
men
and
women
who
built
the
city.
B
You
allow
us
myself
and
Lydia
and
Joe
an
aged
Adrienne
and
a
whole
bunch
of
us
to
stand
on
your
shoulders
every
day.
I'm
excited
that
we
here
today,
I'm
sorry
for
the
delay
and
how
it
come.
It
took
so
long
to
get
here,
but
we
could
have
done
something
that
was
half
hardening
inputed
put
a
room
in
the
building
that
wouldn't
be
sufficient
enough
and
we're
going
far
beyond
the
room
in
the
building.
We're
creating
something
really
special
here.
B
That
can
be
a
model
not
just
here
in
Boston
Massachusetts
throughout
the
country
and
as
we
go
into
this
hour,
our
plan
for
last
year,
and
we
talked
about
really
understanding
older
Bostonians
and
making
sure
that
people
understand
you.
We
want
to
say
what
this
is
adding
to
that
so
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you
for
your
patience.
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you
for
for
waiting
for,
pushing
me
and
pushing
your
elected
officials,
because
this
is
a
big
day.
B
Let
me
just
read
real
quick
that
I
don't
miss
something
we're
gonna
be
at
my
remarks
yet
say:
questions
were
asking
you
but
I'm,
not
gonna.
Ask
you
any
questions,
because
there's
just
gonna
mean
more
for
us
to
do
so.
I'm,
not
gonna,
ask
any
questions,
but
we
want
it.
We
want
you
to
know,
and
also
in
East
Boston.
Just
so,
people
understand
we're
also
making
investment
in
North
Park
in
the
Rockies
urban
wildlife.
B
We
want
you
to
understand
that
we
do
not
forget
this
neighborhood
I
love,
this
neighborhood
I
said
it
from
day
one
from
the
first
time
that
I
came
here
as
a
candidate
at
running
for
mayor
of
Boston
through
today.
We'll
never
forget
these
possible
when
I
continue
to
invest
in
these
Boston
and
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you.
This
is
an
exciting
day.
Freeze,
Boston
and
I
want
to
thank
the
people
who
deserve
the
round
of
applause
or
all
of
you
who
pushed
us.
Thank
you
very
much.
A
Thank
You,
mayor
and
I
know
that
mayor
just
said
that
people
that
deserve
the
round
of
applause
are
those
of
you
who
pushed
us,
and
there
was
a
group
that
has
pushed
us
very,
very
hard,
which
is
fabulous.
I
love,
I,
love
great
advocates,
but
if
you
all
could
stand
up
and
be
recognized,
that
would
be
great.
A
C
Thank
you
very
much.
I'll,
be
brief.
I
apologize
I'm
a
little
bit
sick,
so,
if
any
of
you
wonderful
Nana's
want
to
make
me
some
soup
I'm,
just
putting
it
out
there,
no
honestly
I'm
here
to
celebrate
with
you,
because
this
is
not
just
the
investment
in
a
building.
This
is
an
investment
in
our
seniors
that
people
have
done
the
most
work
for
our
community.
For
years,
you've
raised
your
kids.
You've
worked
in
our
for
the
city.
C
You've
done
everything
to
make
East
Boston
a
true
community
that
we
all
inherited
a
lot
of
the
benefits
from
we
weren't
there
through
all
the
tough
times,
but
we're
here
now,
because
a
lot
of
the
work
that
you
did
before
we
were
here.
So
this
building
is
an
investment
in
our
seniors
and
for
many
people
who
are
seniors
who
want
to
age
in
place
who
want
to
stay
in
their
homes
and
have
some
form
of
independence,
they
need
a
place
to
go.
It
can
be
lonely
for
some
seniors.
C
It
can
be
frightening
for
some
seniors
and
so
to
have
a
place
to
coordinate,
to
exercise,
to
do
some
Zumba
lessons
to
do
some
yoga
to
have
a
lot
of
fun.
That's
a
beautiful
thing
and
it's
going
to
last
for
generations,
and
it's
going
to
be
a
place
that
we
continue
to
grow
and
I
wanted
to
just
make
sure
that
I
recognize
not
only
the
amazing
seniors
who
helped
make
this
happen.
I
do
want
to
again
thank
my
colleagues
in
the
Statehouse
Adrienne
and
Joe
for
their
continued
partnership
on
so
many
different
things.
C
The
conversations
that
we
have
after
these
conversations,
a
lot
of
you
aren't
there
for
that,
but
I
really
enjoy
working
with
you
and
thank
you
again
to
the
mayor.
I
want
to
also
thank
Emily
Shea
from
age
strong,
so
apologize
again,
I'm
a
little
bit
under
the
weather,
but
this
is
a
great
day
and
I'm
very
excited.
D
That's
what
I
like
to
hear
you
know,
ladies
and
gentlemen.
The
day
has
finally
come.
It
is
real.
It
is
real.
I
can't
tell
you
every
event
and
meeting
I
have
gone
to
for
the
past
three
years,
where
I've
run
into
any
of
our
wonderful
seniors
in
this
community.
Many
of
you
were
here
in
this
room,
the
one
the
only
question
I
get.
D
When
are
we
getting
the
Senior
Center
and
it's
not
just
when
I'm
out
in
the
community,
it's
at
home,
too
I
got
my
mother
Deborah
here
my
aunt
Roberta
here
we
recently
had
the
holidays,
and
this
was
the
big
issue
they
were
talking
to
me
about
as
well
Adrienne.
When
are
you
getting
us,
the
Senior
Center?
D
You
promised
us
well
thanks
to
Mayor
Walsh
and
his
team,
thanks
to
Commissioner
Shea
and
her
team,
with
by
the
way
Commissioner
Shea's
a
resident
of
East
Boston,
and
this
has
been
one
of
her
priorities
too,
and
of
course,
thanks
to
our
friends
at
massport,
I
know
Elena
traveling
he's
here
for
those
of
you
who
don't
remember.
The
genesis
of
this
whole
thing
was
through
the
Li
AG
process.
Some
of
our
Li
AG
members
are
here.
D
I
know
you're
going
to
hear
from
Mary
Berninger
soon,
but
when
we
were
talking
about
a
new
mitigation
package
for
East
Boston-
and
we
mentioned
the
Senior
Center
and
that
kind
of
rose
to
the
top
is
a
priority.
I'll
give
a
lot
of
credit
to
Massport
at
the
time
Tom
Glynn,
now
Lisa
Weiland,
who
immediately
jumped
on
board
and
said.
Yes,
this
is
an
investment.
D
D
And
it
makes
sense,
obviously
with
our
geographic
isolation,
but,
most
importantly,
this
is
really
what
you
all
deserve,
not
only
the
seniors
in
this
room,
but
every
senior
in
East
Boston.
You
are
the
folks
that
invested
in
this
community
raised
your
families
built
this
community
up
to
be
the
attractive
place.
It
is
today
where
folks
are
now
flooding
to
live
in
East
Boston
that
that's
right.
That's
not
because
of
me
I'm
31
years
old.
D
That's
because
of
what
you
did
for
this
community
to
make
it
amazing
beautiful
and
vibrance-
and
this
is
what
you
deserve
it's
time,
that
we
repay
your
contributions
by
giving
you
a
Senior
Center.
So
you,
and
especially
my
mother
and
my
aunts,
who
tell
me
all
the
time
that
they
have
to
go
to
Winthrop
the
Senior
Center
program
and
they
have
to
go
here
and
there.
Finally
Joe
that
made
Joe
happy
he's
from
Winthrop.
He
likes
the
Senior
Center.
D
E
Thank
you,
I!
Never
get
the
round
of
applause
that
Adrienne
gets
around
here.
You
know
it's
all
right,
I'll,
take
what
I
want
to
thank
Emily,
how
about
a
round
of
applause
Emily?
Should
she
ever
present
in
this
community
at
every
senior
event,
and
a
great
resource
for
all
of
us
today
is
a
great
day
for
East
Boston,
and
it
really
shows
the
collaboration
between
every
level
of
government
and
agencies
in
and
around
government
to
come
together,
understand
the
needs
of
a
community
and
make
those
investments.
E
You
know
really
when
we
talk
about
money
and
how
we
spend
money
in
a
budget,
it's
really
a
measure
of
our
values,
and
this
should
be
really
an
outward
way
to
say
to
all
of
you
that
we
value
each
and
every
one
of
you
and
every
level
of
government
at
every
agency
in
and
around
the
Commonwealth
in
the
city.
We
see
the
need
we
want
to
invest
in
the
need
and
invested.
E
All
of
you,
I
came
along
in
2016
and
began
to
serve
this
wonderful
community
shortly
thereafter,
Adriana
brought
me
to
an
Li
AG
meeting
and
I
really
think
that
as
Adrienne
spoke
to,
that
was
the
seed
for
this
and
understanding
what
the
community
needs
are.
Having
Massport
at
the
table,
ready
to
deliver
on
mitigation
and
having
the
awesome
opportunity
to
say:
where
should
we
best
spend
this
mitigation?
It's
something
the
mayor
and
I
have
talked
about
a
lot
that
something
Lydia
and
I.
E
You
know
have
dealt
with
over
the
past
four
years
and
you
know
she's
been
an
integral
part.
I
really
do
want
to
thank
mayor
Walsh.
If
the
investment
Massport
is
made
on
operation
is
really
incredible,
it
will
help
sustain
this
building,
but
the
capital
costs
of
this
building
the
mayor
Walsh
agreed
to,
and
then
they
were
even
a
little
higher.
He
agreed
again,
you
know
renew
that
commitment.
So
thank
you
to
the
mayor,
his
team
in
the
City
Council
for
this
wonderful
investment.
E
You
know-
and
you
do
all
deserve
it.
You
know
this
investment
is
an
investment
paid
back
to
you
for
the
investment
that
you've
made
in
this
community
to
make
it
a
livable
and
workable
place.
You
all
have
all
not
just
survived
the
ever
changing
East
Boston,
but
you've
contributed
it
to
it.
You've
contributed
to
the
change.
You've
led
the
way
and
through
your
advocacy
advocacy,
not
just
on
this
project
but
for
everything
that
happens
in
it
around
this
community
I
think
it's
time.
A
Well,
that's
why
it's
so
great
that
it's
right
on
the
tea
line,
right
yeah,
so
so
you've
heard
math
port
mentioned
a
few
times
today
and
I
know:
there's
such
a
great
partner
to
the
East
Boston
community.
They
have
committed
to
supporting
some
of
the
ongoing
programming
and
operations
of
this
Center
once
it's
up
and
built.
So
please
join
me
in
welcoming
Elena
Coppola,
director
of
community
relations
and
government
affairs,
for
mass
port.
F
Thank
you
thank
you
Emily,
and
thank
you
for
all
that
you
do
for
Boston
seniors
through
the
age
strong
Commission
I
would
first
just
to
like,
like
to
thank
mayor
Walsh
for
your
leadership
on
this
project.
I
know:
I
speak
on
behalf
of
Massport
CEO
Lisa
Weiland
when
I
say
that
massport
is
truly
so
proud
to
be
a
partner
in
the
creation
of
what
will
be
a
wonderful
space
for
our
seniors.
F
I
have
grown
up
in
East,
Boston
I
was
born
and
raised
in
East,
Boston
and
I
know
what
a
truly
special
place
it
is
and
what
an
impact
a
Senior
Center
like
this
will
really
have
so
Massport
is
pleased
to
commit
to
almost
$200,000
a
year
for
programming
costs
at
the
senior
center
to
ensure
that
it
is
a
vibrant,
Senior
Center
for
many
many
years
to
come.
So
thank
you
and
I
look
forward
to
seeing
you
all
at
the
ribbon-cutting.
Thank
you.
A
G
Thank
you
for
inviting
me
to
speak
on
behalf
of
the
community.
Thank
you,
mayor,
Walsh,
for
everything
that
you
do
in
East
Boston,
not
just
this
project,
Lydia
Adrienne
Joe!
Thank
you.
So
the
day
is
finally
here
and
I.
Didn't
think
it
would
come,
but
it's
here
so
thank
you.
This
Center
will
join
other
facilities
as
iconic
structures
in
East,
Boston,
Boston
branch,
public
library,
the
East
Boston
Early,
Childhood
Center,
the
Paris
Street
gym,
where
we
are
today,
the
YMCA,
the
social
centers,
the
Boys
and
Girls
Club
come
to
mind
just
to
name
a
few.
G
G
It
will
be
a
welcomed,
standalone
facility
for
seniors
who
desire
a
sense
of
community
arrest
it
from
isolation,
a
place
for
recreation
or
a
space
to
reveal
themselves
of
the
many
services
that
East
Boston
office,
or
that
the
city's
age
strong
commission
can
bring
to
our
seniors
advocacy
by
many
individuals,
helped
to
keep
the
idea
of
a
Senior
Center
in
the
forefront
of
the
city's
planning
agenda.
Through
the
efforts
of
our
elected
officials,
a
much-needed
funding
source
was
found
through
the
community
benefits
agreement
in
collaboration
with
Massport
Thank
You
Elena
Thank
You
Anthony.
G
Additional
partnerships
in
the
neighborhood
will
further
the
mission
of
caring
for
our
seniors
in
a
dignified
way.
Santa
luminary
work
has
been
done
from
an
organizational
standpoint.
The
groundwork
has
been
laid
to
create
a
501c3
for
the
Senior
Center
and
I
want
to
thank
I,
don't
believe
he's
here,
but
I
wanted
to
thank
attorney
Lin's
for
helping
us
accomplish
that
goal.
The
appropriate
documents
for
recognition
will
be
filed
once
a
budget
for
expected
revenue
and
likely
expenses
has
been
determined.
G
A
Wonderful
and
as
Mary
said,
we
are
so
excited,
this
is
Senior.
Center
can
be
a
place
for
all
East
Boston,
older
adults
to
come
together.
There
are
so
many
people
excited
about
this.
Just
look
at
the
room
around
you,
so
I'd
like
to
introduce
Josephine
Osorio,
to
say
a
few
words
about
what
the
center
will
mean
to
her.
