services

need

access
as
we
get
older,

how
we
live

community.

sure

seniors

my
district
as
a
state
Rep
had
the
services
that
they
need
made
sure
that
we
went
out
with
three
or
four
times
a
year,
not
to
talk
politics
or
so
offers.

and
I
know
some
people
have
a

working
on
different
issues.

network
of
age-friendly
cities,
I'd

be
able

say
with
my
idea
for
similar

idea.

We
talked
about
how
we
expand
services,
so
we
are
building
an
age-friendly
City
and
we
have
been
making
sure
that's
been
a
priority
of
ours,
my
administration
since
the
beginning,
and
actually
was

priority
of
the
past
administration,
two
of
the
Menino
administration
in
Boston.

great
respect
for
our
elder
all
the
residents,
and
we
want
to
make
sure
that
our
older
residents
understand
and
know
that
you
were
the
one
that
built
the
city.

ones

build
the
cities
with
different
types
of
struggles
for
everybody,
and
we
want

thank
you
for
that,
and
we
need
to
make
sure
that
we
would
be
the
city
we
are
today
without
the
great
sieges
that
we
have
living
in
ours
in
our
city.

city
continues

grow

listening

community
engagement
events

a
lot

strengths
for
our

just
as

the
airport,
we
created
75
different
action
steps
and
also
guiding
principles
to
move
our
work
forward.
Things
like
creating
more
affordable
housing,
something
I
hear
every
single
day
in
the
city:
reliable
transportation,
something
that
I
heard
about.

Used
to
go
visit,
my
senior
buildings
in
Boston
in
Dorchester,
access
to
parks
and
open
space,
and
we're
working
on
that
today
to
make
sure
that
our
parts
are
replaced,
that
everyone
can
go
into
and
enjoy
and
we're
working
on
a
plan
to
make
sure
that
every
resident
wants
that
lives
within
less
than
a
10-minute
walk
to
a
park,
with
a
continue
to
move.
That
and
our
parks
are
for
our
seniors
and
our
parks
are
for
our
kids
and
everyone
in
between.
So
with
that,
we
do
that.

grandmother
had
Alzheimer's
and
my
aunt
was
her
caregiver
in
Ireland,
but
it
was
a
struggle
back
then
in
Ireland
to
do
it
that
support
for
us
understand
to
make
sure
that
we
have
those
caregivers
yet,
and
we
help
those
caregivers
we're
looking
at
how
to
make
more
current
programs
and
services
available
and
accessible
to
all.
The
residents
can
benefit
from
it.
Our
agent
work
process
into
all
of
our
citywide
planning
processes
and
making
sure
that
Boston
is
a
pledge
of
all
residents
of
all
ages.
All
abilities
and
all
backgrounds
can
succeed.

our
imagined,
Washington
2030
plan
right
now
and
incorporating
that
plan.

everybody

of
Boston
visited
a

for
the

had

ambulance
company,

had
the
Council
on
Aging.
We
had
the
aging
service
access,
point,
elder
services,
group
and
lots
of
senior
citizens.

were
just
having
kind
of
a
town-hall
meeting
and
talking
to
one
another
and
that's
the
opportunity
that
we
have
now
across
the
state
to
have
these
conversations
stakeholder
meeting
these
listening
sessions,
to
hear
from
you
about
how
we
can
get
from
where
we
are
today
to
these
opportunities
that
we
have
going
forward.

that
when
he
goes
around
the
state
and
I
would
say,
this
is
true

myself

need
people
who
are
in
their
60s
and
70s
and
80s
who
are
vigorous

capable

doing
unbelievable
things.
They
are
civically
engaged,
they're,
working,
they're
volunteering,
their
driving
meals
on
wheels
and
they're
working
with
middle
middle
school
students
doing
really
important
work
out
our
communities.

communities
would
not
have
been
built
since
mayor
Wolfe
said,
and
they
would
not
operate
and
continue
if
it
were
not
for
the
expertise
and
the
incredible
time
hours
that
older
adults
continue
to
the
value
in
those
communities.
So

is
really
about
taking
on
the
negative
attitudes
that.

Into
a
society,
can
we
call
that
ageism
and
ageism
is
notions
that
you
make
assumptions
about
people
based
on
how
old
they
are,
and
those
assumptions
might
be
negative
and
we
have
get
past
that
and
age
friendly
communities
gives
us
a
framework
to
demonstrate
the
incredible
knowledge,
expertise,
strengths,
passions
that
you
all
have
and
that
you
bring
to
our
cities
and
towns.
So
I
can
tell
you
on
behalf
of
Governor
Baker
and
secretary
there
in
the
Centers.

are
truly
committed
to
standing
out
ageism
to
helping
the
public
to
understand
that
I'm,
not
getting
older,
I'm
gaining
momentum,
which
is
a
really
cool
way
to
frame
it.
That's
from
the
frameworks
Institute,
which,
if
you
get
an
opportunity,
there's
some
terrific
reports
on
Aging
by
the
frameworks,
Institute
and
they're,
helping
people
all
over
the
country
change
the
way
we
think
about
all
of
us
getting
older.
So
it's
not
us
against
them.
It's
not
old
versus
young.
We
are
all
in
this
together.

Boston
was
the
first
city
in
the
Commonwealth.
Through
this

short-term
opportunities,

long-range
challenges

initiative

a
long
time,

you

probably
just

happy

moving

the
next
stage
of

age-friendly
Boston
action
plan
and
I
know.
We
are
all
greatly
energised
by
what
we've
heard
so
far,
and
others
have
pointed
it
out,
but
I'm
just
going
to
point
to
the
sign
over
here
as
the
mayor's
commitment
to
making
this
the
best
city
in
the
world
for
older
adults.
That
is
a
tall
order
and
I
think
that
in
here
from
the
people
you've
heard
from
already
how
seriously
the
city
is
changing
that.

A
key
component
of
our
role
in
the
aged
friendly
Lossman
initiative
has
been
to
ensure
that
the
action
plan
you'll
be
hearing
about
today
effectively
respond
to
the
needs
and
interests
of
older
adults
that
live
in
Boston.
Before
the
initiative
was
established.
We
worked
with
the
city
to
outline
features
of
the
older
population
that
was
going
to
be
useful
for
the
initiative,
but
also
for
their
planning
ahead.
In
that
word,
we
identified
three
key
issues
that
needed
to
be
kept
in
mind
as
we
designed
the
project
and
as
we
as
we
move
ahead.
B
First,
we
observed
that
the
number
of
older
adults
in
Boston
has
grown
substantially
and
that
it's
going
to
keep
growing
in
coming
sections.
Specifically,
the
projections
suggest
that
by
2030
more
than
120,000
adults
in
Boston
will
be
at
age
60
and
that's
up
from
about
90,000
in
2010.
So
to
sort
of
think
about
you
can
visualize
how
quickly
the
older
population
is
growing
in
Boston.
We
expect
that
older
adults
will
make
up
about
19%
of
Boston's
population
by
2030.
So
what
that
means
is
that
this
is
the
right
time.

The
city
chose
the
right
time
to
begin
this
initiative
and
to
move
ahead
with
it,
we're
going
to
see
a
lot
of
changes
in
the
coming
years,
and
this
is
the
time
to
be
planning
for
it.
A
second
thing
that
we
observed
is
that
in
coming
years,
more
Boston
seniors
will
be
persons
of
color
and
many
will
speak
languages
other
than
English
at
home
over
the
previous
decade.
Virtually
all
of
the
growth
in
the
older
population
was
in
persons
of
color.

That
same
sense
of
inclusiveness,
paying
attention
to
linguistic
differences,
culture,
differences.
We
need
to
really
highlight
that
as
a
part
of
our
planning
process
for
older
adults,
as
well
as
for
younger
adults
and
children,
and
then
thirdly,
observe
that
aging
is
impacting
some
communities
for
segments
or
neighborhoods
much
more
than
others
involved,
and
so
already.

Make
up
more
than
one
out
of
five
residents
in
neighborhoods
like
Chinatown
and
the
West
End,
and
other
neighborhoods
like
for
Chester
and
Roxbury,
already
have
very
large
numbers
of
seniors
in
their
in
their
neighborhoods
and
so
aging
is
impacting
different
parts
of
the
communities.
Different
neighborhoods
different
areas,
different
degrees
in
a
different
way,
and
we
had
to
factor
all
of
that
into
our
planning
as
well.

We
made
surveys
available
in
six
different
languages
as
a
means
of
ensuring
that
we
heard
from
all
different
sectors
of
the
community.
We
made
surveys
available
in
print
and
we
also
put
them
online.
So
we
heard
from
a
very
wide
range
of
people
more
than
3,600
responses
all
together
and
when
all
was
said
and
done,
we
heard
from
more.

Boston
residents,
covering
virtually
every
neighborhood
in
every
demographic
group
along
the
way
we
partnered
with
many
many
community
organizations.
These
partnerships
were
essential
in
hearing
from
all
of
the
people
that
we
heard
from
and
hearing
from
all
the
different
sectors
that
we
heard
from
so
partnership,
not
just
among
the
groups
that
you're
hearing
from
today,
but
all
through
the
neighborhoods
all
through
the
city,
an
essential
feature
of
this
plan
and
this
process,
and
it's
going
to
continue
to
be
essential.

Yet
so
many
of
you
may
have
reviewed
our
findings
report
when
it
was
released
last
summer,
but
I'd
like
to
mention
just
a
couple
examples
of
our
key
findings
and
then
you're
going
to
hear
more
about
what
the
city's
going
to
do
about
them
in
a
little
bit.
One
thing
we
heard
clearly

try
to
mention
this
first,
because
it's
sort
of
the
key
background
information.

One
thing
we
heard
clearly
is
that
older,
adult
inboxes
love,
they
love
their
city,
they
love
their
neighborhoods
in
their
communities
and
they
really
want
to
stay
here
as
they
get
older,
seeing
some
time
to
start
cavities.
That
may
get
a
worry
that
maybe
they're
not
going
to
be
able
to
accomplish
that
for
the
experience.
Concerns
may
be
financial
concerns
for
total
keeping
up
their
home
or
they
may
develop
some
kind
of
mobility
limitations
like
mine.

A
lot
of
that
was
about
the
cost
of
housing
and
the
increasing
cost
of
housing
and
the
fact
that
people
were
concerned
about
being
able
to
jump
with
that
increasing
cost
people
worried
about
being
able
to
maintain
their
home
and
when
they
looked
around,
they
didn't
really
see
very
many
downsizing
options.
So
if
people
did
want
to
feel
like
they're
one
in
a
good
fit
for
them
anymore,
they
didn't
know
where
else
to
go.
Many
people
just
said
straight
out.

Steps
that
the
city
is
intending
to
take
that
will
help
older,
don't
stay
in
their
home
and
find
additional
ways
to
work
to
address
resident
concerns
about
house.
We
also
heard
about
residents
concerned
about
their
ability
to
travel
where
they
want
to
go.
Austin
is
a
great
city
for
public
transportation.
It's
a
very
walkable
city,
but
there
are
situations.
Circumstances
where
that
public
transportation
system
does
not
mean
people's
need
for
the
walkability
is
not
sufficient.
So
we
did
hear
about
all
of
those
kinds
of
things.

The
last
thing
that
I'll
mention
just
from
the
money
because
it
runs
through
the
plans
of
every
element
of
the
plan,
is
the
point
about
communication.
We
heard
a
lot
about
lack
of
communication
people
not
knowing
what
was
out
there
for
them,
not
knowing
the
ball.
How
to
get
the
information
they
need.
Communication
is
a
hallmark
of
the
entire
plan.
It
runs
all
the
way
through
it
and
you
will
I
believe
see
something
changes
in
terms
of
how
that
issue
was
addressed.

So
that
was
the
initial
phase
of
the
initiative
that
we
set
out
to
learn
to
hear
from
the
community
about
the
concerns
that
older
adults
at
Boston
have
about
aging
in
the
city.
So
you
might
ask
solo:
what
did
you
do
with
all
that?
And
while
we
needed
a
lot
of
help
to
do
something
with
math,
we
set
it
all
into
our
development
of
the
action
plan.
But
again
we
needed
a
lot
of
help
and
a
lot
of
support.

We
wanted
to
make
sure
that
the
plan
responded
to
the
actual
needs
and
concerns
we
wanted
to
make
sure
it
would
yield
benefit
to
residents
as
they
age
in
Boston,
and
we
wanted
to
make
sure
it
could
be
done
in
three
years.
So
this
is
a
tall
order
and
we
put
together
a
lot
more
people
out
of
the
community
out
of
organizations
chances
address.
We
had
a
work
group
that
focused
on
different
elements
of
an
age-friendly
City.
We
helped
to
community
engagement
events
that
helped
us
prioritize.
What
the
most
important
issues
were.

I'm

to
close
by
just
saying
again
how
happy
I
am
to
be
here
of
happy
Advent
to
being
part
of
this
project
so
far,
I'm
personally
grateful
for
the
leadership
of
Shay
and
the
elderly
Commission,
and
the
passion
and
energy
of
Andrea
burns,
the
director
of
age-friendly
Boston
and
really
for
the
entire
staff
of
the
elderly.

support

the

these
folks
put
in
many
hours
of
hard

so
we
really
appreciate

that

now

action,
we

action
steps
and
we
would
be
here
till
it's
dark
if
I
went
through
all
of
them.
So
I'm
not
going
to
do
that,
because
you
have
the
plans
in
your
hand,
but
I
am
going
to
pick
some
highlights
out
to
go
through
just
so.
You
get
a
sense
of
what
the
plan
contains.

As
you
Christmas
is
a
three
year
plan
and,
as
is
a
comprehensive
Lee
as
the
75
on
action
steps,
they
lead
to
a
stronger
Bobson
for
all
of
our
residents,
so
Boston
residents
reported
wanting
to
be
able
to
stay
in
the
city
as
they
age,
as
you
heard,
from
Jim
in
the
neighborhoods,
where
they
have
connections
and
histories.
The
plan
will
focus
on
programs
to
promote
it,
including
increasing
access
to
tax
relief
programs,
home
repair
and
other
homeowner
support
programs,
doing
education,
centers
sessions
for
renters
and
better
coordination
of
services
to
prevent
homelessness.

An
example
of
one
of
these
action
items
is,
with
our
senior
property
tax
work
on
program.
Now
some
of
you
may
know
this
program,
and
some
of
you
I
think
here
participate
in
this
program,
but
it's
really
a
win-win
program.
It's
a
program
or
volunteers,
work
off
money
on
their
property.
Taxes
by
volunteering
in
a
city,
department
and
city
departments
benefit
from
the
expertise
or
skills
the
older
volunteers
bring.
A
We
will
be
working
with
the
City
Council
to
increase
the
amount
of
money
that
you
can
work
off
of
your
taxes
through
this
program
from
1,000
to
1,500
dollars
and
so
I
think
that
that's
going
to
be
very
exciting
for
us
and
provokes
that
participate
in
that
program.
We
also
heard
that
being
able
to
get
around
is
important
to
our
residents.
Another
action
item
in
this
plan
will
work
in
alignment
with
Boston's
vidoes
vision,
zero
program
to
create
a
friendly,
walking
spaces
near
high
concentrations
of
seniors.

So
this
means
looking
at
things
like
improved
crosswalk
timing,
so
that
we
have
enough
time
to
process
Street
in
crosswalks
markings,
good
lighting,
places
to
rest
and
sidewalks
that
are
easy
to
navigate
and
I
want
to
recognize
Jean
and
Commissioner
deed,
Gina,
C
and
doctor
from
our
Transportation
Commission
was
a
year
and
they'll
be
in
the
room,
but
we
really
look
forward
to
working
with
Gina
and
her
team
hope
she's
back.
There
look
forward
to
working
with
Gina
and
her
team
on
that
action
item.

to
the
AARP
foundation,
the
health
risks
associated
with
prolonged
isolation
are
equal
to
smoking.
15
cigarettes
a
day
now
do
folks
in
this
room
know
people
who
are
isolated
as
they're.
Maybe
don't
have
a
lot
of
connection
with
other
people,
I'm
sure
that
you
do
as
c11
heads
nodding.
So
as
part
of
this
action
plan,
we
will
partner
with
other
city
departments,
organizations,
Boston
residents
and
our
faith-based
communities
to
find
and
connect
with
socially
isolated
elders
to
get
them
connected
to
either
a
friendly,
visitor
or
put
to
programs
and
services
that
they
might
be.

We
will
also
place
a
special
focus
on
this
plan.
On
public
benefits,
enrollment
and
retention
and
other
items
that
address
economic
security,
because
we
know
that
it
can
be
hard
for
many
of
our
residents
to
make
ends
meet
I
would
want
to
make
sure
that
they
have
enough
of
money
to
meet
basic
needs
in
the
city
to
advance
our
effort
to
be
a
dementia
friendly
community.
This
plan
also
places
emphasis
on
it
on
items
that
address
our
estimated
11,000
residents
with
dementia
and
I'd
like
to
recognize
chief
informant,
who
I
think
is
somewhere
out
there.

I
can't
really
say
everything:
I
she's,
our
cheese,
our
elderly
Commission,
lead
on
our
dementia
work
and
I
also
want
to
recognize
Jim
Wexler
and
his
team
in
the
Alzheimer's
Association
for
their
partnership
on
this
dementia
works
with
us.
We
will
raise
awareness
of
the
disease
and
it's
warning
signs
work
to
connect
our
residents
with
resources
and
support
and
create
a
comprehensive
system
to
address
the
behaviors
of
people
that
wander
so
to
reduce
the
risk
of
wandering
behaviors.

recognize
that
the
wealth
of
experience,
skills
and
talent
that
we'll
learn
don't
spring
to
our
city.
I
know
you've
heard
them.
They
are
say
that,
but
I
just
want
to
re-emphasize
that,
because
it's
so
true
in
this
plan
will
will
work
to
connect
older
adults
to
volunteer
opportunities
and
recognize
them
for
their
contributions
that
they
made
to
the
city.
We
will
take
action
in
this
plan
to
identify
and
address
the
barriers
to
employment
for
people
over
50
in
the
city.

We
know
that
there
are
many
people
who
want
access
to
employment
who
are
unable
to
find
it
in
their
later
years,
and
so
we're
going
to
work
to
figure
out.
Why
is
it
happening,
and
how
can
we
fix
that?
We
heard
from
many
of
you
about
the
importance
of
having
something
to
do
and
staying
socially
connected,
and
it's
part
of
the
section
plan
we
will
map
opportunities
for
engagement,
identify
any
gaps.

exists
in
our
programming
and
work
with
partners
to
fill
those
gaps
and
then
I
think,
most
importantly,
and
above
all
will
take
steps
to
promote
these
opportunities
so
that
you
know
what
is
going
on
and
how
to
get
solved.
This
action
plan
also
borders
to
create
communities
where
older
adults
are
included
and,
and
people
of
all
ages
are
respected.
We
will
partner
with
Watson
Main
Street,
to
train
local
businesses
on
age
and
dementia
friendly
business
practices.

to
all
of
these
holes
is
communications.
We
heard
from
you
that
you
want
to
know
how
to
get
involved,
how
you
can
access
programs
and
supports
and
how
you
can
bring
benefit
to
as
well
as
benefit
from
all
the
city
has
to
offer.

part
of
this
plan,
we
will
create
a
comprehensive
strategy
for
how
the
city
communicates
with
our
older
residents
there's
a
lot
that
will
be
achieving
together
over
the
next
three
years
and.

is
a
process
of
continual
improvement,
so
these
are
the
first

things
we'll
do
and
then
we'll
work
together
on
the
next

in
three

and

partners

that
we
work
with

city,
our
city,
partners,
our
community
partners
and
Boston
residents.

touches
every
facet
of
city
life
and
together
we
can
enhance

experience

aging
well

Next,
multiple
city
departments

to
the
success

this
action
plan.
The
age-friendly
Boston
initiative
will
convene
an
advisory
committee
to
help
guide
the
implementation
of
this
plan
and
smaller
groups
will
be
organized
with
relevant
partners
in
order
to
move
other
action
items,
implementation
and
then,
after
that,
what
will
we
do?

This
is
the
culmination
of
two
years
of
work
and
broad
community
participation
in
planning.
The
remaining
three
years
will
be
for
the
implementation
of
these
action
items.
During
these
years.
The
age-friendly
Boston
initiative
will
work
with
relevant
departments
in
the
city
as
well
as
community
partners.
To
accomplish
these
specific
items,
we
will
hold
community
meetings
with
residents
to
keep
people
informed
about
the
progress
asking
for
feedback
and
support.
Older
adults
are
our
most
valued
allies
and
the
achievement
of
a
more
age-friendly
possible.

continue
to
synthesize
all
existing
planning
efforts,
integrating
the
perspective
of
seniors
until
it
becomes
routine
to
involve
older
adults
in
all
areas
of
social,
cultural,
economic
and
political
life
of
the
city.
We
will
publish
annual
progress
report
to
keep
the
public
informed
about
the
efforts
and
keep
ourselves
on
track
with
our
community
partners.

age-friendly
Boston
initiative
will
continue
to
make
progress
toward
a
diverse
vibrant
community,
which
empowers
all
individuals
to
age
well
and
have
full
lives
in
the
city.

toward
transforming
concepts
about
aging,

example,
instead
of
just
thinking
about
how
we
serve
older
adults.
We
also
are
thinking
about
how
older
adults
serve
the
larger
Boston
community
with
wisdom
and
experience

members

well

don't
get
old,
we
get
valuable,
just
like
race,
religion
and
culture,
age,
diversity,
strength
and
the
bonds

deepening

the
lifespan

universally
connecting
us
to
one
another.
