From YouTube: "Community Game Changers" Slade's Mural Unveil
Description
Slade's Bar & Grill has been in the South End since the 1930's, making it the oldest African-American owned business in Boston. Mayor Walsh stops by Slade's to view a new mural featuring 50 community leaders of color.
A
B
B
Ceilings,
shatter
those
ceilings
and
still
continue
to
have
a
big
impact
in
our
city,
as
I
said,
I
could
literally
mean
senators
and
reps
and
former
reps
and
former
senators
and
philanthropists
and
people
that
are
involved
in
education
and
people
that
involved
in
education.
I
see
my
friend
over
there.
Who's
been
in
so
many
in
in
in
in
construction
and
in
everything,
every
single
field.
I
would.
B
But
it's
not
because
of
the
work
that
we're
doing
in
City
Hall
it's
because
of
the
work
of
the
people
in
this
room
who
laid
that
foundation
down.
It
was
a
good
strong
foundation
and
we
can
continue
to
build
on
that
foundation.
I
want
you
just
to
think
about
the
the
great
Bostonians
that
it
here
they're
on
the
bureau's
around
me,
the
folks
that
set
down
the
groundwork-
and
these
are
just
a
few
of
the
people-
some
of
them
on
the
murals-
are
still
rising.
They
come
so
Presley
come
to
be
congresswoman.
Pricing.
B
B
I'm
gonna
see
him
in
a
few
minutes,
firing.
Rushing
quite
sure
of
the
house
represented
with
mo
Cowan
said
he
warn
Santa
Wilkerson
I
mean
so
many
people,
Mel
King.
Who
is
a
mentor
to
me
now?
Most
people
don't
realize
it,
but
Mel
calls
me
at
least
once
a
week
with
advice,
sometimes
with
a
demand,
and
sometimes
it
just
just
give
me
a
nice
kind
of
word.
B
So
I
just
want
to
thank
everyone
being
mayor
of
us
and
he
realized
that
it's
not
about
one
area,
one
neighborhood,
it's
about
the
entire
city
of
Boston
and
I,
want
to
thank
and
I
want
to
thank
Darryl
I
want
to
thank
Terrell
and
I
want
to
take
Leo
for
allowing
these
murals
to
be
hung
here.
So
when
people
come
in
here
and
have
a
drink,
go
grab
something
to
eat,
they
look
up
on
the
wall
and
they
ask
questions
about
who
was
some
of
the
pictures
on
the
wall.
B
B
You
know
we're
gonna
continue
to
change.
Boston
we're
gonna
continue
to
make
Boston
cluesive
we're
gonna
continue
to
look
at
everything
that
we
do
in
our
city,
whether
its
economic
development,
whether
it's
housing
or
that's,
education,
whether
it's
the
arts
and
culture,
whether
it's
the
environment,
whatever
it
is.
We
need
to
continue
to
do
that,
because
this
city's
for
everyone.
When
my
parents
came
to
the
city
and
the
50s,
they
came
on
a
plane
separately
and
they
landed
at
Logan
Airport.
B
My
mother
had
an
on
here
and
my
father
had
some
cousins
here,
and
they
were
they
will.
They
were
welcomed
with
open
arms
and
they
just
worked
hard
every
single
day
and
provided
from
me
and
my
brother.
What
we
have
on
the
table
and
that's
what
Boston
is
all
about
so
I
want
to.
Thank
you.
All
I
do
have
a
citation
certificate
that
I'm
not
gonna,
read
all
three
of
them,
but
I
want
to
a
recognition
to
the
co-owners
of
Slade's,
Bar
and
Grill
in
honor
of
your
inaugural
celebration
and
dedication
to
the
king.
B
Any
game
changes
mural
at
Slade's,
Bar
and
Grill
in
appreciation
of
your
your
recognition
of
many
iconic
leaders
who
have
contributed
to
the
success
and
the
empowerment
of
the
black
community
and
the
entire
society
on
behalf
of
the
Boston
city
of
Boston.
We
want
to
congratulate
you
on
this
momentous
occasion,
and
we
want
to
thank
you
for
recognizing
us
a
lot
of
there's
a
recognition,
a
lot
of
places.
We
want
to
thank
you
and
recognizing,
because
Darryl
I
know
when
you
and
I
talked
about
this.
B
How
important
this
was
that
this
place
stays
and
how
this
place
changes
and
helped
people
for
generations
that
come
so
I
want
to
congratulate
you
all
I
want
to
thank
you
all
for
coming.
I
can't
stick
around
for
the
celebration,
because
I'm
going
to
target
now
to
be
with
the
Commission
I,
don't
tell
them
I
said
and
say
it
looked
great
them
in
the
mural
for
we're
doing
shop
with
a
cop
tonight.
B
A
Well,
good
evening,
game,
changers
and
guests,
all
the
game
changes
in
the
room.
So
many
friends
here
for
those
that
I
have
not
met
I
want
to
say
my
name
is
Karen:
Holmes
ward,
I'm,
the
director
of
public
affairs
and
community
services
at
wcvb-tv,
channel,
5
and
Bob
and
I'm
so
happy
to
be
with
you
this
evening
for
this
very
historic
and
inspiring
event
for
the
community
and
for
the
city.
A
Here,
who've
inspired
careers
and
broader
industries
like
civil
rights,
community
activism,
architecture,
the
media,
the
arts
and
or
using
their
intellect
and
resources,
to
tell
the
true
stories
that
depict
the
black
community
in
a
positive
light.
Each
community
GameChanger
leads,
creates
and
have
inspired
us
all
so,
on
behalf
of
Slade's
owners.
A
I
want
to
thank
mayor
Walsh
for
stopping
by
to
pay
his
respects
early
out
before
heading
over
to
target,
to
do
some
shopping
right
with
the
Boston
Police
Department,
and
for
that
wonderful
annual
holiday
toy
mint
that
you
do,
and
we
certainly
want
to
give
a
special
thanks
to
the
corporate
sponsors
of
the
community
game,
changers
project,
Eastern,
Bank,
Gilbane,
Hyams,
the
foundation,
mass
growth,
capital,
corporation,
red
gates,
the
Boston
foundation.
And,
of
course,
we
work
now
to
provide
us.
With
the
background
of
why
and
how
this
project
came
about.
A
Is
the
man
you
all
know
he's
a
Renaissance
man
who
is
founder
of
the
Beantown
jazz
festival,
a
former
owner
of
the
Beehive
former
owner
of
Gerald's
corner
bar
and
kitchen,
a
real
estate
developer,
and
he
is
a
true
spark
attack.
Please
welcome
one
of
the
co-owners
and
Managing
Partner
of
Slade's
Bar
and
Grill
mr.
Darrell
Vettel.
D
So
first
I'm
gonna,
say
good
evening:
everyone
and
I'm.
Thank
you
to
my
good
friend,
I'm,
Karen
ward,
Kevin,
Holmes
ward,
for
the
kind
introduction.
It
is
great
and
wonderful
to
see
so
many
of
you
here
tonight
to
see
and
honor
the
many
heroes
around
amongst
us
who
have
made
and
continue
to
make
sacrifices
for
us
to
be
here
to
live
an
enjoyable
quality
of
life
and
the
freedoms
that
many
others
can
only
dream
about.
D
I
mentioned
the
mayor
earlier.
This
mayor
has
actually
done
a
lot
for
the
community,
since
he's
been
in
office
and
doors
are
opening
up
and
I'm
sure.
You
guys
know
that
the
people
that
have
surrounded
me
behind
have
really
paved
the
way
for
us
and
their
shoulders
that
we
stand
upon,
but
we're
beginning
to
see
some
light.
D
I'm,
not
saying
that
the
doors
are
completely
over
I'm,
saying
the
doors
are
opening
and
I
think
some
of
us
are
taking
advantage
of
some
of
those
opportunities,
and
hopefully
more
of
us
will
the
project
that
we're
here
celebrating
tonight
has
been
a
labor
of
love
over
the
last
eight
months
for
our
community
in
its
history.
Karen
mentioned
that
sleighs
bar
engrossed
at
oldest
operating
black
business
in
Boston,
which
opened
here
in
this
same
spot
in
1935.
D
D
Initially,
it
was
just
going
to
be
a
fumarole
with
some
prominent
figures
to
highlight
many
of
those
that
are
no
longer
with
us,
but
who
would
help
shape
this
community's
political
business
and
social
environments?
Our
research
of
artists,
Ricardo
Gomez,
an
artist
I,
met
over
15
years
ago
at
a
community
festival
in
Hill
Ricardo's
work
is
undeniably
just
outstanding.
He
had
not
have
worked
together
before,
as
I
have
commissioned
him
on
to
personal
projects.
D
D
D
E
D
D
C
D
Fantastic
comments
and
compliments
came
from
our
regular
guests
and
customers.
We
quickly
quickly
knew
we
had
something
that
can
come
quite
special
and
the
project
took
off
from
there.
I
want
to
point
out
that
the
highlighted
individuals
are
not
the
only
community
game
changers,
they
happen
to
be
the
names
that
mentioned
most
often
by
the
community
when
we
casually
polder.
E
E
D
I
want
to
thank
all
of
the
recipients
recipients
who
have
made
it
this
evening
for
their
grit
and
commitment
to
justice.
You
are
all
truly
community
game-changers
I
want
to
also
mention
that
I
received.
Thank
you
acknowledgement
and
regrets
for
some
that
were
not
able
to
join
us
tonight.
Keith
Marlene
is
over
in
Chelsea
hosting
a
community
meeting
for
the
selection
of
the
new
school
superintendent,
I'm
councilman
for
council
u.s.
D
C
A
D
We
should
do
this
without
Mike
Marvin
Gilmore
is
luckily
on
a
cruise
going
to
five
different
countries
and
by
the
way
many
of
you
guys
know
that
Marvin
Gilmore
wrote
a
book
a
couple
years
ago
and
he
dropped
off
a
hundred
books
for
you
guys
and
said.
If
you
want
him
signed
just
to
call
him
directly,
he
would
Patti
would
happily
signed
those
books
for
you.
D
Mel
King,
you
know
a
hero
of
many
of
us,
and
the
mayor
mentioned
him
earlier
mayor,
unfortunately
I'm
sorry
Mel.
Unfortunately,
it's
not
feeling
well
but
gives
his
regrets
that
he
could
not
be
here,
but
his
family
is
here
on
his
behalf
and
I
mentioned
Michael
Haynes
at
Reverend,
Michael
Haynes,
we
talked
two
weeks
ago
and
he
did
not
think
that
he
would
be
able
to
make
it
I
called
him
this
morning
at
10
o'clock,
I
called
him
this
afternoon
at
4
o'clock
and
he's
now
here.
D
The
tribute
book
that
we
have
provides
detailed,
BIOS
and
wonderful
quotes,
but
some
of
those
shoulders
would
now
stand
on.
One
of
my
family's
by
colon
Powell
have
a
vision,
be
demanding
having
vision
being
demanding
regardless.
There
are
many
stories
and
comments.
I
could
share
with
you
tonight
regarding
the
development
this
project,
but
in
the
interest
of
time,
I
want
to
just
take
the
time
to
thank
the
individuals
of
extremely
been
helpful
in
making
this
project
so
substantial,
Garret,
Jackson,
Blanc,
who's,
the
event
planner
and
did
some
of
the
bio.
D
Danya
who's
wat,
who
also
exists
in
the
BIOS
and
research
Daniel
Lehman,
who
lists
of
the
evidence,
sending
middle
groups
who
actually
took
all
the
panel
photos
that
you
see
in
the
books,
I'm
Carolyn
Newman,
who
designed
the
pro
the
tribute
book
and
also
the
brochures
thomas
newly
who
is
a
former
Boston
Herald
editor
and
reporter
and
Donald
West's.
Our
event
I
just
want
to
say
special
things,
go
to
both
Gail
and
Carolyn,
who
have
been
with
me
for
over
the
last
ten
years,
helping
to
make
my
wild
ideas
and
projects
become
realities.
Thank
you.
D
This
project
would
not
have
been
a
reality
without
our
sponsors,
which
are
led
by
Eastern
bank.
The
Heinz,
Foundation
and
I
want
to
personally
thank
two
people,
quincy
miller,
the
president
eastern
bank,
and
just
when
I'm,
starting
with
the
president
behind
foundation,
both
of
you
are
beacons
in
our
community
and
are
doing
viable
work
to
help
make
this
city
a
place
for
all
and
I'm
going
to.
Thank
you
dearly
for
your
leadership.
Thank
you,
the
other
sponsor
mentioned
earlier.
We
worked
the
Boston
foundation,
Gilbane
a
master
of
capital
corporation
and
my
business
partners
at
reggae.
D
D
D
Last
I
want
the
nice,
my
family,
my
wife
Lisa,
my
two
kids
president
Taylor
I,
want
to
thank
you
guys
for
allowing
me
to
do
the
work
that
I
do
and
I
know
that
you
know
how
important
it
is
because
we
talked
about
it
at
the
table
all
the
time
about.
We
have
to
be
on
the
front
line
if
we
want
things
to
happen
for
our
community,
so
I
want
to
thank
you
and
I.
Want
you
all
to
know
that
I
love
you
and
tell
you
can
look
at
me
from
the
phone
down.
E
D
A
Thank
you
so
much
Darrell,
you
know,
Darrell's
official
title
is
managing
partner,
Slade's,
burned,
grill
president
catalyst
ventures,
Development
LLC
I
called
him
a
spark
attack
before.
So.
If
you
want
to
know
what
the
meaning
of
spark
attack
is,
you
can
read
his
bio
on
page
17
in
your
beautiful
tribute
program
book
now
to
bring
regards
from
a
Beacon
Hill
in
the
Statehouse
I'd
like
to
ask
Anthony
Richards
to
come
forward
representing
governor
Charlie
Baker.
C
So
I
brought
a
citation
with
me,
but
I
think
this
mural
I
was
with
Darrell,
probably
a
few
weeks
ago
for
young
young
people,
like
myself,
I
think
you
know,
I
looked
at
this
mural
and
I
instantly
thought
of
you
know
the
old
African
proverb
you
know
you
want
to
go
fast,
go
alone.
If
you
want
to
go
far,
go
together,
many
folks
behind
me
I
kind
of
get
chills
because
you
guys
kind
of
set
the
way
you
know
there.
C
C
So
it's
presented
to
slade's,
Bar
and
Grill
on
behalf
of
the
citizens
of
the
Commonwealth
of
Massachusetts.
I
am
pleased
to
confer
upon
you
this
governor's
citation
in
recognition
of
the
establishment
of
the
historic
community
game,
changers
mural
at
Boston's,
oldest
operating
black-owned
restaurant
presented,
Slade's,
Bar
and
Grill
on
today,
December
and
2018.
Thank
you.
A
Okay,
we
have
more
citations
from
Beacon
Hill.
These
are
from
the
office
of
state
senator
Sonia
chang-diaz
and
there's
one
for
each
owner
of
slaves
from
the
Commonwealth
of
Massachusetts
state,
Senate
official
citation,
be
it
known
that
the
Massachusetts
Senate,
whereby
extenders
congratulations
to
all
of
the
owners
of
Slade's
barn
girl
and
recognition
of
your
long-standing
dedication
to
the
community
and
the
preservation
of
the
history
of
Roxbury.
A
Be
it
further
known
that
the
Massachusetts
Senate
extends
its
best
wishes
for
continued
success,
that
this
citation,
be
duly
signed
by
the
president
of
the
Senate
and
attested
to
and
a
copy
thereof
transmitted
by.
The
clerk
of
the
Senate
and
it
is
signed
by
Karen,
spoke
up.
William
F
Welch
the
clerk
and
offered
by
state
senators,
Sonia
Chang,
Diaz,
very
nice
citations.
They
hang
on
the
wall
and
now
I'd
like
to
introduce
the
eastern
bank
president
Quincy
Miller
vice
chairman
and
president.
F
Good
evening,
everyone-
it's
really
fantastic
to
be
here
in
such
a
special
place
that
has
such
history
here
in
the
community
and,
more
importantly
with
so
many
people
here
that
have
such
impact
in
influence
on
this
great
community
being
memorialized
here
on
the
wall
and
slaves
is
obviously
a
great
recognition
of
the
work
and
the
influence
that
you
pay.
That
you've
made
here
in
our
community.
F
That
need
to
be
whether
that
be
our
wealth
gap
issue
that
we
have
here
in
Boston,
whether
that
be
women's
rights,
that
we
continue
to
fight
for
and
obviously
making
sure
that
our
communities
of
color
can
thrive
from
both
a
personal
and
a
business
sense.
I'm
very
proud
to
be
able
to
thank
all
the
wonderful
game.
Changers
that
are
part
of
our
corporate
governance
here
at
Eastern
Bank,
which
you
can
see
on
the
the
back
your
program
here
we
call
so
many
of
you
friends
on
our
board.
F
We
call
all
the
rest
of
you
friends
in
the
community
that
we
work
so
closely
with
including
one
of
our
colleagues
who's
on
the
board
here:
Glen
Lloyd,
who
heads
up
our
business
equity
initiative.
Thank
you
specifically
to
Glen
for
the
commitment
that
he's
made
and
the
impact
he
continues
to
make
through
that
business
equity
initiative,
as
we
help
black
and
Latino
businesses
scale
and
take
it
to
the
next
level
and
get
their
piece
of
the
leadership
pie
here
in
Boston.
Thank
you
very
much.

G
It's
really
an
honor
to
be
here.
My
sole
motivation
from
getting
involved
here
was
purely
his
historical
and
to
respected
addition.
This
place
our
partner.
Mr.
Calloway,
came
to
me
and
said:
they're
gonna
sell
the
place.
We
need
somebody
from
the
neighborhood
I'm,
a
self
in
guy
I,
said
T
I,
don't
know
this
game
I've
been
in
sports.
My
whole
life
find
a
gym,
find
a
magnificent
person
who
knows
this
game.
He
found
mr.
settles
plus
the
partnership
was
created.
So
you
know
here
we
are
and
the
most
important
thing
about
this
place.
G
There's
been
a
tremendous
list
of
former
owners.
My
best
friend
is
a
former
owner
here.
Some
of
you
guys,
who
are
my
age
or
older,
may
remember
him.
His
name
was
Jesse
Jackson,
Jackson's,
fish
and
chips
by
the
way,
he's
97
and
he's
still
alive
and
I
spoke
to
him
this
morning,
a
little
under
the
weather,
which
is
understandable.
We
were
going
to
get
him
up
here,
but
mr.
Jackson
was
recently
awarded
the
Congressional
Medal
of
Honor,
the
nation's
highest
honor.
G
He
owned
this
place
from
nineteen
59
through
1966
when
he
sold
it
to
Bill
Russell
from
the
Boston
Celtics.
Mr.
Jackson
has
a
piece
of
paper
and
he
keeps
Hannah
likes.
That
is
how
she's
down
in
White
Cliffs
employment.
It
goes
back
to
Charlestown,
State
Prison.
You
want
to
be
in
history
back
in
those
days
to
get
out
of
prison,
you
had
to
have
gainful
employment,
a
young
man
by
the
name
of
Malcolm
little.
E
G
That
was
his
friend
Jessie
wanted
to
get
him
out.
Jessie
has
the
piece
of
paper
that
he
had
tested
to
the
fact
that
mr.
little
would
be
gainfully
employed
here
at
slaves
as
a
way
there.
Mr.
little
as
we
know
as
Malcolm
X
went
on
to
become
a
guy.
That,
in
my
opinion,
would
be
a
great
president
for
us
today,
tremendous
leader,
a
man
of
conviction,
a
guy
who
really
got
it,
and
he
grew
up
right
down
the
street
on
Dale
Street
but
Jessie.
He
has
that
piece
of
paper
and
I
said
Jay.
G
E
G
You
know
my
earliest
memories
here,
probably
like
a
lot
of
you
guys,
I.
Remember
one
night
we
had
a
shoeshine,
a
shoeshine
box
outside
the
shoeshine
guy
didn't
show
up
so
I
mother
told
me
go
ahead
out.
They
got
a
picture
me
in
1959
out
front
shoeshine
boy,
so
I
think
it's
appropriate
to
get
to
kind
of
come
full
circle
and
to
have
the
the
pleasure
and
the
honor
of
being
partners
with
a
guy
like
Darryl
and
a
guy
like
T,
Calloway
and
I'll.
G
Leave
you
with
this
my
daughter
Brittany's
over
at
the
bar
like
going
to
stand
up
this.
She
is
right
here
this
Brittany
or
something
native.
Do
you
guys
remember
the
everything's
in
church
on
around
the
Corps,
her
great-grandfather,
squirt
Johnson
was:
was
the
Reverend
there
and
found
her?
That's
Brittany,
that's
my
daughter,
but
he's
a
real
singer
and
I
don't
want
to
start
any
scandals,
but
my
relationship
was
the
Callaway
goes
back
to
the
bit.
I
met
her
mom
one
night
at
his
all
place
to
the
gallery
and
they'll
leave
you
guys.
