From YouTube: Boston Storm Preparations - 12/22/22
Description
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu hosts a media availability to share how City departments are preparing for the upcoming late-week storm expected to impact Boston with heavy wind and rain, and how residents can stay safe.
A
B
Thanks
for
joining
us,
okay,
everyone
all
set,
so
we
just
wanted
to
take
a
little
time.
I
know
many
folks
are
already
finishing
last
minute,
preparations
for
the
holiday
and
trying
to
make
plans
to
get
on
the
road
or
welcome
friends
and
family.
We
did
want
to
give
a
brief,
a
little
closer
council
president.
We
did
want
to
give
a
little
just
update
on
some
of
the
most
recent
projections
in
terms
of
weather
and
make
sure
that
everyone
is
prepared
and
understands
what
the
city
has
been
doing
to
prepare.
B
I
am
so
grateful
for
our
teams.
I
know
for
every
major
storm.
It
is
a
little
bit
of
intense
preparation
that
can
upend
lots
of
schedules
for
city
workers
who
will
be
out
treating
the
roads
or
responding
and
making
sure
that
any
situations
that
come
up
with
tree
lot
trees
or
power
lines
or
medical
situations
that
that
we
hope
won't
happen.
But
that
is
all
City
staff
that
will
step
in
to
help
take
care
of
that
we
are
prepared.
B
We've
had
our
coordination
that
is
been
running
over
the
last
week
and
we
are
ready
for
this,
but
I
just
want
to
especially
thank
our
city
workers,
because
it
is
a
holiday
weekend
that
this
is
they
are
sharing
their
time
away
from
their
families
as
well
to
make
sure
we
are
all
safe
and
prepared
so
before
I
hand
it
over
to
the
council.
President
I
want
to
thank
folks
from
our
staff,
who
are
also
here.
Of
course,
we
have
our
fire,
commissioner.
B
Chief
of
EMS,
we
have
representatives
from
departments
and
Facilities
thinking
about
buildings
all
across
the
city
and
so
we're
here.
If
you
have
questions
on
that
front,
here's
what
we
are
expecting
tomorrow,
Friday
Boston,
will
likely
experience
Winds
of
50
to
60
miles
per
hour
until
about
6
PM.
Now
this
is
what
I
I
want
everyone
to
be
prepared
for,
because
It's
all
under
control,
but
just
be
aware
if
there
are
tree
branches
that
get
blown
down
power
lines
that
you
see
knocked
over.
B
Please
report
those
to
3-1-1
our
internal
constituent
service
system
so
that
we
can
get
folks
out
there
as
soon
as
it
is
safe.
Do
not
touch
the
power
lines
yourself
do
not
try
to
get
involved.
If
you
call
3-1-1,
we
will
be
on
top
of
it,
and
that
system
is
also
available
in
11
languages
now,
and
so
we
encourage
everyone
just
to
remember
those
numbers
and
keep
it
handy.
B
If
you
see
any
impacts
coming
from
that,
and
just
be
aware
of
your
surroundings
that
the
high
wind,
the
strong
wind,
will
really
be
kind
of
one
of
the
most
visible
parts
of
the
storm
that
we're
going
to
be
experiencing,
the
temperature
on
Friday
will
be
in
the
40s,
but
wind
chill
is
expected
to
drive
that
down
to
the
low
teens
throughout
the
weekend,
and
so
we're
getting
ready
and
preparing
every
bit
in
case
there
is
a
flash
freeze
that
might
happen
and
we
we
are
expecting
single
digits
overnight
in
terms
of
temperature.
B
As
far
as
rainfall
we
are
currently
expecting
about
two
inches
of
rainfall
across
Boston
and
water
levels
are
expected
to
be
around
three
feet
above
high
tide,
and
so
the
timing
of
the
storm
matching
high
tide
could
present
a
challenge
when
it
comes
to
flooding
in
certain
areas
of
the
city.
According
to
the
National
Weather
Service,
we
will
continue
to
update
this
data
throughout
the
day
and
our
city
teams
will
be
monitoring
these
projections.
So
we
know
exactly
where
our
services
need
to
be
deployed.
B
The
streets
department
has
struck
trucks
standing
by
ready
to
treat
the
roads
with
salt,
if
necessary,
and
after
the
rainfall
on
Friday.
If
the
roads
don't
dry
enough
by
the
time
temperatures
approach
freezing,
we
will
mobilize
to
get
salt
out
across
all
the
roadways.
There
are
40
000
tons
of
salt
stored
at
nine
facilities
across
Boston,
so
each
are
close
to
the
neighborhoods
that
they'll
need
to
get
to
and
we
will
be
able
to
get
salt
to
every
corner
of
the
city
quickly.
B
If
we
need
for
anyone
planning
to
go
out
this
weekend,
please
be
sure
to
dress
warmly
the
temperature
will
drop
suddenly
and
so
do
your
best
to
stay
dry
watch
for
icy
conditions
and
signs
of
hypothermia.
We
encourage
residents
to
avoid
driving.
If
you
can
fewer
cars
on
our
streets
means
fewer
chances
for
Dangerous
incidents
to
happen,
and
if
you
must
drive,
please
be
extra
aware
of
your
surroundings.
B
If
you
are
accessing
this
online
at
weather.gov
box
and
to
say,
update
to
stay
updated
with
any
alerts
from
the
city,
we
have
our
text
messaging
system
that
will
be
up
and
running
for
everyone
to
get
the
real-time
notifications
you
can
sign
up
at
Boston
got
sorry,
okay,
sorry,
you
can
sign
up
at
boston.gov
alerts
or
text
alert,
Boston,
all
one
word,
no
spaces
to
888
777,
again
boston.gov
alerts
or
text
a-l-e-r-t-b-o-s-t-o-n
to
the
number
888
777
for
our
unhoused
and
house-bound
neighbors
winter
storms
can
be
particularly
dangerous,
and
so,
if
you
see
anyone
who
might
be
in
need
of
help
or
are
experiencing
an
emergency,
please
call
9-1-1
so
that
we
can
connect
them
with
Services
right
away.
B
There
are
many
of
our
Community
Partners
out
and
about
across
the
city.
Pine
Street
in
and
other
providers
will
be
deploying
their
resources,
their
mobile
Vans,
to
check
on
anyone
who
needs
it.
But
we
want
to
reserve
their
services
for
response
to
services
to
folks
who
who
need
to
to
get
inside
rather
than
emergency
response,
because
we're
just
never
quite
sure
how
much
time
they
they
need
with
each
individual
person.
B
So
if
you
do
see
someone
who
looks
like
they
may
be
vulnerable
or
need
help,
given
the
cold
and
and
storm,
please
reach
out
to
us
by
by
dialing
9-1-1
and
we'll
make
sure
that
EMS
and
our
service
providers
get
out
there
and
for
non-emergency
questions
again
downed
trees,
power
lines,
anything
that
comes
up.
Please
report
that
to
3-1-1
you
can
call
the
number
311
we'll
have
extra
staff
ready
to
answer
those
calls
or
submit
a
request
via
the
app
on
your
phone.
B
B
B
We
will
work
with
the
electrical
companies
to
ensure
that
they
can
be
cleared
safely
and
I
want
to
thank
all
of
our
utilities,
Utility
Partners,
for
ensuring
that
we
are
prepared
ahead
of
time
as
well.
Okay,
I
want
to
make
sure
that
our
Spanish-speaking
residents
get
this
information
as
well
and
then
sorry
for
the
delay.
I'll
pass
it
to
the
council
president.
C
C
C
C
D
I
have
the
opportunity
to
join
mayor
Wu
yesterday
for
a
coordinated
meeting
with
department,
heads
and
I
know
we
have
been
working
closely
with
department
heads
and
with
workers
throughout
the
city,
but
what's
important
is
when
there
is
a
storm?
Each
person
can
play
a
pot.
D
So,
if
all
if
you
are
able
to
not
be
on
the
roads,
that's
important
because
our
dedicated
city
employees
need
to
do
their
job
and
they
will
do
it.
But
we
are
asking
for
cooperation
from
from
the
residents
as
well.
Again,
just
want
to
thank
the
dedicated
city
employees
that
will
be
out
throughout
all
the
neighborhoods
of
Boston
over
the
next
7
several
days,
while
we're
at
home
with
our
families
for
for
Christmas.
D
B
Yeah,
you
know
we're.
We
are
asking
everyone
to
be
vigilant.
This
is
we're
not
ringing
an
emergency
alarm
Bell
by
any
means,
but
this
will
be
one
of
the
larger
storms
that,
as
we're
headed
into
the
winter
season,
fingers
crossed
that,
as
the
projections
currently
show,
it
stays
as
rain
rather
than
accumulation
on
the
ground
as
snow.
B
But
we
know
it's
a
busy
time
of
year
and
are
just
asking
everyone
to
please
put
in
that
X
building
that
extra
time
cushion
sometimes
with
holiday
shopping
I,
know,
I've
been
guilty
of
rushing
throwing
the
car
somewhere
trying
to
get
to
get
that
last
gift
before
you're
supposed
to
make
it
time
back
to
the
the
gathering
with
everyone
just
take
a
little
bit
more
time
and
it's
always
better
to
be
safe,
and
so
we
want
to
just
encourage
everyone
to
be
aware,
build
in
that
extra
cushion.
This
will
start
into
tomorrow.
B
It
is
the
combination
of
high
winds,
intense
winds,
precipitation,
high
tide
timing,
and
so
you
know
the
the
experts
would
would
tell
it
best,
but
our
our
public
works
department
is
really
keeping
fingers
crossed
that
this
current
projection
that
we
have
it
looks
like
we
could
be
a
teeny
bit
lucky
and
I.
Don't
I
feel
like
I,
just
cursed
it,
but
there's
a
scenario
in
which
the
high
winds
will
actually
help
us
dry
out
the
roads
a
bit
and
so
that,
as
the
temperatures
drop
with
precipitation,
it
may
not
freeze
as
much.
B
We
are
hoping
for
that.
But
again
it
all
depends
on
timing
and
intensity,
and
the
winds
bring
a
different
set
of
challenges
so
right
now.
That
is
what
we
want
people
to
be
most
Vigilant
of
we'll
get
more
information
as
we
go
in
terms
of
what
the
potential
for
a
flash
freeze
could
look
like,
but
we
are
ready
with
salt
and
we
are
ready
with
the
Staffing
levels
to
be
able
to
treat
the
roads.
B
Should
it
look
like
the
the
drying
effect
isn't
happening
as
as
it
could
was
worried
about,
while
also
worrying
about
completely
in
town.
We
know
that
there
is
very
high
probability
of
high
winds.
It's
a
mixed
probability
right
now
of
the
road
freeze
that
can
turn
to
very
dangerous
conditions,
but
we're
hoping
that
as
it
currently
stands,
we
may
be
able
to
not
see
as
much
of
that,
and
it
could
be
at
a
time
of
night
that
it
is
less
dangerous
than
it
would
be
otherwise,
but
all
of
it.
B
This
there's
always
a
reminder,
unfortunately
more
and
more
often
about
how
much
Boston
needs
to
just
take
into
account
the
water
levels
and
our
coastal
city.
We
will
be
watching
that
very
carefully
and
prepared.
You
know
the
fire
department
has
equipment
that
is
ready
to
respond,
and
EMS
is
well
trained
on
that
front
and
so
again,
I
know.
D
E
Not
exactly
because
we
know
we
know,
people
are
going
to
be
right
right,
but
but,
as
the
mayor
said,
we
can't
say
it
enough.
Slow
Down
slow
down
whether
it's
you
know
when
it's
driving
with
doing
errands
with
your
own
foot,
the
icing
conditions
yeah,
it
doesn't
sound
like
it's
going
to
be
like
a
sleep
freezing
rain
type
thing,
but
if
we
do
get
freezing
later,
all
it
takes
is
a
small
patch
of
advice
somewhere,
but
it
may
not
be
a
roadway.
It
could
be
a
sidewalk.
E
It
could
be
your
stairs,
it
could
be
a
whatever,
and
you
know
you
don't
want
to
debilitate
an
injury.
You
know
you
don't
want
to
be.
You
know
laid
up
for
a
few
months
out
of
work
or
out
of
school
because
of
a
slip
and
fall
on
black
ice,
so
things
like
that
can
be
avoided
by
really
just
trying
to
concentrate
on
what
you're
doing
and
I
think
a
lot
of
common
sense.
A
Yeah,
we're
always
worried
about
the
seaport
District,
so
we
stationed
two
vehicles
in
that
area
that
a
high
water
rescue
vehicles
so
anything
happens
there
we
can
get
people
out
with
standing
water.
I
would
always
ask
people
to
not
go
near
standing
water.
There
could
be
a
saw
cover
off
or
something
like
that
or
electrified
water.
With
a
power
line
down.
Please
don't
drive
in
water,
don't
walk
through
it,
but
we're
ready
we're
going
to
increase
Staffing
tomorrow
morning
and
I.
A
B
Yeah,
there's
that
we
can
work
on
this
with
the
with
the
counselor.
Some
other
cities
have
had
a
contest
where
the
students
in
schools
or
the
city
will
nominate
names
for
each
of
the
snowplows
to
have
an
identity,
but
not
yet
thanks.
Everyone
happy
holidays.
