From YouTube: Wreath Laying Ceremony Honoring Mel King - 4/10/23
Description
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu attends a wreath laying ceremony hosted by the City of Boston in honor of Mel King.
A
I
have
the
privilege
of
serving
as
the
chief
of
Economic
Opportunity
and
inclusion
I
want
to.
Thank
you
all
for
coming
out
on
this
beautiful
day.
As
we
remember
a
very,
very
important
Bostonian
who
passed
away
a
couple
of
weeks
ago,
we're
going
to
jump
right
into
the
program
I'm
going
to
invite
Reverend,
mariama
white
Hammond,
the
chief
of
environment,
energy
and
open
space,
to
offer
a
few
opening
remarks.
B
B
B
Many
of
you
know
there
will
be
multiple
opportunities
to
share
his
life
and
how
he
touched
you
with
them
and
as
anyone
who
has
mourned
knows
that
this
is
a
challenging
moment,
and
so
we
created
a
few
opportunities
for
you
to
share
your
stories,
both
here
at
City,
Hall.
There's
a
book
inside
where
you
have
the
opportunity
to
write
and
share
and
pass
your
ideas
onto
the
family
and
thoughts
and
prayers,
and
also
at
the
bowling
bowling
bowling
building
in
Nubian
square.
B
And
so
we
hope
not
just
folks
who
work
for
the
city,
but
folks
from
around
the
city
will
take
an
opportunity
to
stop
by
here
at
City
Hall
or
at
the
bowling
building
to
share
your
memories.
Your
sentiments
and
your
well
wishes
for
Mel
King
and
his
family
later
today,
there'll
be
the
viewing
from
four
to
eight
at
Union
United,
Methodist,
Church
and
the
family
has
been
so
gracious
to
extend
that
from
between
4
and
8
pm,
and
everything
will
be
done
to
accommodate
everybody
who
wants
to
say
their
goodbyes.
B
B
His
legacy
touched
us
all,
City
Hall.
This
crowd
would
not
look
like
it
does
if
it
were
not
for
the
legacy
of
Mel
King,
and
so
many
of
us
stand
here,
knowing
that
we
stand
on
the
shoulders
of
a
giant,
and
so
we
hope
that
you
will
continue
over
these
next
two
days
to
honor
him,
but
really
that
we
all
think
about
how
we
continue
to
honor
him
far
beyond
these
official
days.
C
Thank
you
Reverend
good
afternoon
to
all.
Thank
you
so
much
for
joining
us
here
today
in
remembrance,
commemoration
and
celebration
of
the
beautiful
riches
and
dreams
that
the
late
great
Mel
King
shared
with
the
city,
and
that
we
strive
every
single
day
in
this
building
and
in
the
halls
of
decision
making
here
in
Massachusetts
to
carry
on.
C
I
know
it
has
been
a
difficult
burden
for
those
who
knew
and
loved
Mel
over
these
last
few
days
to
not
only
sit
in
shock
at
the
news
that
he
has
transitioned
and
ascended,
but
to
pull
ourselves
together
and
work
to
try
to
create
some
of
these
spaces
for
the
whole
Community
to
be
together.
So
I
want
to
give
a
special
thanks
to
all
those
who
have
helped
put
together
this
event
in
close
coordination
and
many
other
of
the
commemorations.
C
That
will
happen
over
the
next
few
hours
and
that
have
taken
place
over
the
last
few
days.
Thank
you
to
our
team
here
in
City
Hall
to
the
family
members
for
their
generous
sharing
with
us
of
this
time
and
the
ability
to
to
remember
I
know
many
many
have
been
involved
internally
in
City,
Hall
and
I
want
to
give
a
special
thanks
to
Reverend
mariama
white
Hammond,
Chief
sugar
and
the
whole
team
that
has
worked
together
to
create
this
space.
C
C
And
so
you
look
at
this
collection
of
incredible
leaders
standing
here
and
today
with
us
and
and
the
many
more
who
have
been
touched
and
shaped
by
his
mentorship
by
his
example
by
his
love.
We
would
not
be
the
city
that
we
are
today.
We
would
not
be
representing
the
communities
that
we
do
today
without
Mel's
insistent,
unrelenting
love
for
Boston
and
all
that
we
could
be.
C
A
One
other
thing
I
want
to
thank
our
brother
Mel
King
for
is
forcing
me
and
many
others
to
learn
how
to
tie
a
bow
tie,
and
you
see
one
of
those
here
today,
but
if
you
saw
images
of
Mr
King
back
when
he
ran
for
mayor,
he
was
the
flyest
person
in
this
city
with
these
bow
ties
and
I
want
to
invite
another
leader
up
to
the
podium
whose
family
is
very
well
acquainted
with
Mr
King
and
who's
going
to
deliver
remarks
on
behalf
of
the
city
council,
who
you
see
gathered
here
today,
the
city
council,
president
Mr
Edwin,.
D
Thank
you
Chief
and
it's
an
honor
to
be
with
you
Chief
and
with
Maya
Wu
and
her
Administration,
bringing
us
together
on
this
important
day.
As
we
remember
representative
Mel
King
and
his
family
I'm
honored,
to
be
here
with
my
colleagues
in
city
government,
including
City
Council
of
Flaherty
councilor
Murphy,
Council,
Louisiana,
Council,
Mejia,
Council
of
Lara
Council,
Braden
councilor,
we're
all
Council
councilor
Tanya,
Fernandez,
Anderson
consulate,
Carter,
counselor
Arroyo
as
well.
I,
hope,
I,
didn't
I,
hope,
I
didn't
miss
anybody.
D
Representative
Mel
King
is
a
giant
not
only
because
of
what
he
accomplished
in
his
life,
but
the
passion
that
he
held
for
his
community
in
the
South
End
in
Roxbury
and
his
Fearless
activism
that
improve
the
lives
of
so
many
residents
across
Boston,
a
one-time
finalist
for
mayor
of
Boston.
He
helped
United
a
city.
D
D
Representative
king
showed
integrity
and
dignity
and
he
continues
to
be
a
role
model
for
all
of
us,
a
state
legislator.
He
devoted
his
life
to
the
betterment
of
the
residents
of
Boston
in
fighting
racial,
equal,
four,
racial
equity,
economic
and
social
justice
for
all,
and
he
cared
deeply
about
his
community
and
his
constituents.
D
D
D
A
C
and
whereas
Mr
King
left
an
indelible
mark
on
the
City
by
fighting
for
affordable
housing
and
services
for
residents,
organizing
protests
that
compel
developers
to
construct
a
new
housing
complex,
which
was
named
Tent
City
and
whereas
Mr
King,
Advanced
and
invigorated
the
Civic
life
of
the
city
through
his
1973
election
to
the
Massachusetts
House
of
Representatives.
For
the
ninth
Suffolk
District
and
his
inspirational
campaign
for
mayor
of
Boston
that
established
the
Rainbow
Coalition
party.
A
Thank
you
all
for
coming.
We
hope
you'll
go
out
and
continue
to
celebrate
his
life
today
to
join
us
at
the
viewing
later
this
afternoon
and
to
watch
on
boston.gov
the
official
ceremony
honoring
his
life.
So,
thank
you
all
and
in
the
spirit
of
Mr
King,
make
sure
that
if
you
don't
know
someone
on
this
Plaza
today
that
you
go
out
here,
knowing
who
someone
else
was
today,
one
of
your
fellow
humans
here
on
this
planet
that
you
go
out
and
find
them
and
build
a
relationship
with
them
today.
