From YouTube: MOIA Community Iftar 4/6/23
Description
Mayor Wu gives remarks at City Hall's community Iftar event, hosted by the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Advancement (MOIA).
A
Ramadan
Mubarak
good
evening,
everyone
welcome
to
City
of
Boston's
Community
iftar,
hosted
by
mayor
Michelle,
Wu
mayor's
office
for
immigrant
advancement
and
counselor
Tanya
Fernandez
Anderson.
My
name
is
Monique
Dunwood
I
am
the
executive
director
of
mayor's
office
for
immigrant
advancement,
also
known
as
Moya.
A
My
comc
for
the
evening
is
Omar
koshiba
deputy
director
of
the
Department
of
supplier
and
Workforce
diversity.
We
thank
everyone
for
coming
this
evening.
This
event
is
important
for
the
city
because
of
how
important
the
Muslim
Community
here
is
and
how
we
respect
Heritage
and
culture
for
all
immigrants
and
communities
that
add
vibrancy
to
this
great
city
of
Boston,
like.
B
B
So
good
to
see
so
many
familiar
faces,
you
can't
hear
me
all
right.
I'll
speak
up,
I'll
speak
with
each
other.
This
is
only
last
year
that
we
were
in
the
bowling.
Building
and
I
started
volunteering
for
these
iftars
back
in
2017,
so
it's
really
grown
to
be
a
lot
bigger
than
it
used
to
be.
Thank
you
to
Moya
and
Monique's
team,
and
thank
you
to
Mayor
Wu
and
her
team
for
hosting
this.
B
Every
day
we
try
to
practice
those
virtues
and
qualities,
but
we
can't
take
our
blessings
for
granted
we're
coming
out
of
covid.
Hopefully
now
you
know
at
the
pandemic's
peak
about
20
percent
of
our
residents
were
food
insecure,
and
we
know
that
in
Ramadan
a
time
where
we
withhold
our
bodily
desires,
our
water
and
food
and
we're
tired
and
grumpy.
B
B
A
A
We
have
thank
you
to
Michelle
mayor
Michelle,
Wu
city
of
Boston,
Deputy,
Chief
of
chief
of
staff
used
to
be
Bali
and
City
Hall
and
city
council
colleagues
see
the
counselors
Tanya
Fernandez
Anderson
Lucy,
Lucian,
Michelle,
Michael,
Flaherty
and
Kenzie
Bach,
and
also
we
want
to
recognize
Concepts
who
are
consulates
who
are
here
particularly
Sierra
Leone
consulate
with
Mr
Bari,
hello
and
as
well
of
all
those
who
have
here
tonight
who
recognized
for
their
contributions
to
Boston's
Muslim
Community.
B
And
so,
to
give
us
a
quick
introduction
to
Ramadan
much
better
than
mine,
we
have
the
Imam
of
the
ispcc.
C
D
To
actually
show
care
and
compassion
a
month
that
we
value
so
greatly
because
of
the
spiritual
connection
we
have
with
Allah
is
so
great,
so
I
want
to
thank
the
mayor
of
Boston
Michelle
Wu
for
inviting
the
Muslims
in
the
Boston
area
and
the
surroundings
of
Boston.
For
this
wonderful
event,
thank
you
for
your
invitation,
Ramadan
to
us,
to
the
Muslim
people
and
to
people
in
general.
It
is
a
month
in
which
we
actually
show
our
care
and
our
compassion
to
others
a
month
for
the
family.
D
D
I,
want
to
remind
all
of
you
and
I
want
to
remind
our
mayor
that
this
is
a
month
to
care
about
the
families
those
who
are
in
need
the
orphans,
the
mothers,
the
residents
of
the
great
city
of
Boston.
This
is
a
month
in
which
we
extend
our
hands
and
together
we
Unite.
This
is
a
month
in
which
we
actually
care
about
our
hearts
and
we
cleanse
our
hearts.
D
This
is
actually
a
month
in
which
we
give
the
reason
you
abstain
yourself
from
food
and
drink
and
from
Halal
intimacy
and
from
doing
things
that
God
already
permitted
for
you
is
to
feel
what
others
feel
throughout
the
Earth.
There
are
those
in
our
community
who
are
not
as
Allah
given
us,
Grant
and
Allah,
blessed
us
and
graced
us.
They
they
lack
food.
They
are
in
need.
D
So
this
is
a
good
time
for
the
city
to
heal,
together
to
come
out
from
the
darkness
of
covid-19
to
be
United,
to
think
the
same,
to
speak,
the
same
to
go
to
each
other,
to
care
for
the
orphan,
the
elderly,
those
who
are
in
need
and
to
actually
care
the
people
who
live
in
the
city
of
Boston
and
those
of
us
who
are
unreserved
communities.
Thank
you
so
much
for
being
here
and
thank
you
for
your
invitation.
E
Be
telling
you
guys
a
little
bit
about
like
the
Intel
of
a
student
at
bostonline
student
at
bostonline
Academy,
especially
at
bla
I,
wake
up
bright
and
early
for
support.
Is
a
meal
eaten
Before
Sunrise
during
Ramadan?
This
meal
is
important
for
me
as
it
helps
to
keep
your
food
throughout
the
whole
entire
day
and
provides
you
with
the
energy
you
need
to
carry
out
your
daily
activities.
This
meal
sets
your
stomach
up
for
the
rest
of
the
day
before
something
we
call.
If
thought
I'll
tell
you
guys
about
that
later.
E
As
soon
as
the
sun
rises,
we
pray
something
called
Fajr.
French
repair
is
in
Islamic
religion.
It's
a
prayer.
We
pray
after
what
is
the
first
prayer
of
the
Islamic
religion
and
we
pray
as
soon
as
like
the
time
of
fasting
begins
after
we
pray
that
I
attend
bla.
So
my
school
is
like
really
early,
so
I
stay
away
for
most
of
the
time
before
going
to
school
and
attending
usually
towards
the
middle
of
the
day
of
the
school.
E
I
may
feel
a
bit
tired
or
hungry
during
the
day.
But
you
try
your
best
to
stay
focused
on
your
goal
for
this
holy
month.
Since
my
school
is
very
diverse
and
accepted
different
religions,
we
have
a
prayer
room
for
people
who
like
to
pray
after
school
and
you'll,
be
able
to
do
anything
you'd
like
to
do
before.
If
not,
you
can
either
do
Sports.
You
can
do
homework
or
attend
a
program
like
I.
Do
as
I
get
back
home,
I,
usually
around
20
to
30
minutes
before
iftar.
E
You
would
like
to
maybe
help
your
family
out
with
anything
you
need,
or
what
I
do
is
help
make
food
or
help
clean
before
the
time
of
iftar
and
like
I
was
saying
iftar
is
the
meal
eaten
before
I
mean
after
sunset,
during
Ramadan?
During
the
time
I'd
like
to
help
my
family
make
food
like
I
said
and
after
a
start,
you
break
your
fast
eat,
three
dates
and
water
or
milk
to
your
liking?
E
And
after
that
you
would
pray
two
more
prayers
called
Usha
after
Isha,
you
would
go
either
to
the
mosque
or
maybe
pray
at
home
any
place.
You'd
like
and
we'd
pray
something
called
Taro.
It's
a
special
prayer
performed
after
or
during
the
month
of
Ramadan,
and
after
you
finish,
you
would
like
to
go
home
and
your
day
starts
again
for
the
next
30
days.
This
is
a
general
idea
of
what
a
typical
day
in
your
life
may
look
like
as
a
student
during
Ramadan,
especially
as
a
student
in
DPS.
E
My
school
helps
bring
the
culture
and
religion
of
mine
and
spreads
it
which
I'd
like
about
my
school.
The
daily
routine
may
vary
depending
on
your
individual
circumstances
and
obligations,
but
the
key
is
to
balance
your
spiritual
and
academic
responsibilities
while
taking
care
of
your
health
and
well-being.
Thank
you.
B
Thank
you.
We'll
now
introduce
our
first
ever
Muslim
city
council
from
district
7,
my
city,
councilor,
Tanya,
Fernandez,
Anderson,.
C
H
H
H
H
H
H
H
This
is
the
only
planet
where
human
beings
can
live,
and
it's
the
smallest.
This
is
why
it's
called
Dunya,
which
means
the
law,
and
there
are
many
many
other
planets,
so
we're
being
created
for
a
short
time
in
this
life.
Our
ultimate
home
is
Paradise
and
it's
a
real
place,
but
guess
what
it's
far
better
than
this
world
there
you
live
forever.
There
is
no
dying,
there's
no
sickness!
There
are
no
Wars,
no
racism,
you'll
live
forever.
H
A
I
And
I
want
to
thank
everyone
for
taking
the
time
to
spend
some
time
in
the
People's
Building
with
us,
especially
grateful
to
City
councilor
Tanya
Fernando
Anderson
where's,
the
counselor
right
in
front
of
me
to
Monique
and
the
entire
team
at
Moya
and
to
everyone
who
has
been
a
part
of
organizing
this
I
think
it
is
important
and
necessary
for
all
of
our
communities
to
be
celebrated
and
welcomed
in
every
bit
of
our
public
space,
and
this
building,
especially
and
I'm,
so
happy
to
see
it
transform
from
a
place
that
I
know
the
first
time.
I
I
came
in
here,
felt
big
and
intimidating,
and
you
have
to
come
to
these
counters
and
and
wait
in
line
and
this
and
that
to
be
a
true
community
space
where
we
can
break
fast
together.
And
we
can
all,
in
this
month
of
reflection
and
deepening
faith
and
community,
do
so
in
the
building
that
your
taxpayer
dollars
and
and
all
of
us
share.
So
thank
you
for
bringing
this
to
City
Hall
and
for
making
sure
that
all
of
us
could
take
part.
I'm
I'm
told
that
we
have
some
other
colleagues
here
as
well.
I
That
city
council,
Bruce
Lee,
thank
you
for
your
leadership
and
being
here
if
the
counselors
here
counselor's
team
is
here.
Thank
you.
So
much
I
want
to
thank
our
Deputy
Chief
of
Staff
yusufi
Valley
for
all
of
his
leadership
as
well
and
again
just
emphasize
that
we
as
a
city
have
much
work
ahead
of
us
and
the
Muslim
Community
has
been
such
an
important
part
of
making
sure
we're
building
community
Through
acts
of
service
through
charity
through
the
connections
that
we
we
need
to
see
across
all
of
our
neighborhoods.
I
So,
on
behalf
of
the
entire
city
of
Boston,
I
want
to
express
my
gratitude
to
all
that.
Our
community
members
do
all
throughout
the
year,
not
only
during
the
month
of
Ramadan
and
I'm
so
proud
that
we
have
the
chance
to
serve
as
partners
in
this
important
work
connecting
to
our
families
and
fighting
every
day
for
the
city
that
our
families
deserve.
That
truly
belongs
to
everyone.
We
are
a
stronger
warmer,
more
vibrant
City
because
of
all
of
you.
Thank
you.
Ramada
Mubarak
once
again,.
A
Thank
you
mayor
during
Community
iftar,
we
like
to
recognize
the
outstanding
contributions
of
Boston's
Muslim
Community.
This
year
we
took
community
of
nominations
for
four
categories:
one
in
business,
one
community-based
organization,
one
individual
and
one
youth.
Thank
you.
Everyone
who
participated
in
this
process.
We
collected
a
lot
of
names
and
now
we're
going
to
read
the
final
selection
of
honorees.
Mary
Wu
will
read
your
name
and
we'll
present
a
certificate
from
the
city
of
Boston
honorees.
Please
come
up
when
you
hear
your
name
and
accept
your
certificate
and
smile
for
the
camera.
I
You
want
to
alternate
or
something
we're
doing:
okay,
so
the
first
one
in
the
category
of
business.
We
want
to
thank
and
recognize
Nubian
markets
for
your
commitment
to
providing
fresh,
culturally
relevant
halal
food
to
Boston's,
Muslim
communities
and
congratulations
on
your
opening
this
year.
So
we
want
to
welcome
up
assim
Shakur
Duval,
who
is
a
cafe,
lead
to
accept
the
award.
J
D
A
J
A
Thank
you,
everyone
again
for
coming
tonight
and
as
well
as
the
Islamic
Society
of
Boston
Cultural
Center
for
loaning
prayer
rugs
for
this
this
evening
and
Tarboosh
restaurant
for
the
delicious
food
and
I
especially
want
to
thank
my
immigrant
advancement
team
for
their
hard
work
and
putting
this
together
tonight.
It
was
months
of
work
in
the
making
and
that
they've
been
made
the
hand
like
the
table,
the
moons
handmade
with
all
their
heart
throughout
this
whole
week
and.
B
So
we
got
10
minutes
left
I'm,
not
going
to
fill
the
time
I'm
just
going
to
say
some
quick
Logistics.
Let
people
go
no!
No!
No!
We
thank
you
mayor.
Thank
you
so
much
to
the
moyotean
Monique
Agnes,
everybody
on
the
team,
honestly
I
think
just
as
in
terms
of
logistics
about
717
the
prayer
space
will
be
right
upstairs
and
so
once
our
web,
then
we'll
mix
the
call
feel
free
to
have
the
dates
on
the
table.
Make
your
way
upstairs.
We
have
stairs
on
this
left
side
here
and
then
there's
a
pairs.
B
B
Bathrooms
are
also
on
the
lower
level
right
on
the
left
over
here.
So
you
can
take
a
left
right
down
these
stairs,
there's
also
child
care
with
henna
painting
and
the
back
corner.
So
if
you
have
kids
feel
free
to
have
them
go
there,
we
have
what'd,
you
say
it's
just
for
kids,
I'm,
sorry
yeah
in
terms
of
food,
though
there
are
four
options:
the
kids
get
chicken
nuggets.
B
So
if
you
want
chicken
nuggets,
you
can
get
them
at
the
tables
here,
so
the
blue
table
on
the
left
and
then
the
table
at
the
lower
level.
Once
you
come
back
from
mother
prayer,
just
make
a
way,
pray
and
as
soon
as
we're
done,
praying
make
your
way
down
and
grab
a
plate.
It'll
be
a
pre-packaged
plate.
B
So
you
can
take
it
to
your
table
and
there's
going
to
be
beef,
chicken
vegetarian
option
which
is
falafel
and
then
the
chicken
nuggets
for
the
kids
and
we're
just
asking
people
to
give
priority
for
the
food.
We
have
enough
food
for
everybody,
but
give
prior
to
those
who
are
fasting.
B
Those
who
are
older,
who
are
younger
and
who
are
pregnant-
and
you
know
just
try
to
go
to
the
line
once
but
inshaallah
will
have
more
than
enough
for
those
who
want
seconds,
and
so
we'll
call
people
back
here
or
we'll
call
that
we'll
have
to
call
a
prayer
here
in
about
seven
minutes
and
three
seconds,
but
until
then
make
yourselves
comfortable
and
thank
you
for
coming
appreciate.
