From YouTube: Trotter School Visit - 9/26/22
Description
Boston Mayor Wu hosts holds a media availability following her visit to the Trotter Elementary School with Mary Skipper, Superintendent of Boston Public Schools.
A
Just
amazing,
it's
such
good
spirit
here
at
the
Trotter
and
that's
what
Thomas
did
amazing
job
love,
seeing
the
chant
it's
so
important
for
our
students
to
be
reaffirmed
with
each
other,
and
it
was
just
it's
exciting.
It
was
great
to
have
this,
be
my
first
school
right
down
the
street
from
my
house.
It
would
be
exactly
seven
minutes
full
buses
and
it's
just
exciting
to
be
here-
I'm
really
looking
forward
to
it.
A
You
know
to
working
with
all
of
the
talented
people
here,
big,
thank
you
to
Drew
mcelson
for
all
the
work
he's
done
within
the
transition.
I
feel
well
prepared
and
excited
to
get
going
with
our
commissioner
and
the
whole
child,
making
sure
that
academically
social
emotionally
physically
our
well-being
of
students,
designation
in
our
job
and
I'm,
looking
forward
to
visiting
all
of
our
schools
and
working
with
our
Central
students
to
get
that
mission
to
happen
in
our
priority
system.
A
What's
the
first
area
to
tackle
this
year
as
far
as
a
challenge,
so
you
know
we
we
will
be
ensuring
that
we
have
a
list
of
priorities
that
we've
made
out
of
this.
You
know
sort
of
Back
to
Basics.
We
want
to
make
sure
that
all
the
foundation
is
set
as
we
layer
more
initiatives
from
more
Innovation
on
top.
So
that
includes
really
a
deep
focus
on
our
academics
on
our
social,
emotional
learning
in
the
classroom,
family
engagement,
you
know
a
good
commitment
to
having
a
real
dialogue
and
authentic
dialogue.
A
A
I'm
really
pleased
with
a
lot
of
the
data
so
far
particularly
correct
on
a
lot
of
the
misroots
that
would
happen
last
year
and
so
at
the
beginning
of
the
year,
despite
the
Orange
Line
closure,
we
were
still
you
know
eating
last
year
and
excuse
me
last
year's
baselines
and
now
you
know
we're
definitely
moving
forward
with
some
deep
strategies
around
working
with
the
Union.
It
would
be
structuring
the
contract.
That's
definitely
helped
with
our
on-time
percentage
and
on
our
missed
routes.
A
You
know
just
a
big
shout
out
to
our
transportation
department,
they're
working
around
the
clock
to
get
this
right.
You
know,
we've
even
started
our
own
training
for
CDL,
so
that
we
could
have
a
bench
which
is
what
we
really
need
extra
drivers
so
that
we
ensure
we
don't
have
those
three
we
enjoy.
The
our
time
percentage
comes
up.
A
Orange
line
coming
back
online,
certainly
helped
us
still
a
lot
of
congestion
and
that's
what
we're
still
sort
of
seeing
with
the
buses,
particularly
in
the
afternoon
so
that'll,
be
our
work
over
the
course
of
the
next
few
weeks
to
get
that
right.
We
know,
you
know,
for
our
families,
it's
very
difficult
when
we
can't
rely
on
a
bus
or
a
bus
doesn't
come
or
bus
breaks
down
and
we
have
the
center
replacement.
So
this
is
an
area
that
we
have
to
get
right
here.
What.
A
A
So
it's
been
a
really.
The
last
few
months
has
been
very
emotional
to
leave
one
place.
A
So
it's
been
very
emotional,
especially
last
week
because
it
was
my
final
week
but
I
feel
well
prepared.
I
can't
say
enough
how
the
team
has
done
such
an
excellent
job
with
the
transition.
Ensuring
I
have
the
information
that
I
need
I'm,
briefed
on
everything
and
part
of
decision
making,
and
so
you
know
I
come
in
today.
A
You
know
just
nervous,
excited
very
hopeful
and
just
looking
forward
to
collaborating
and
working
with
our
city
and
our
mayor
and
we're
blessed
to
have
the
mayor
that
we
have
so
committed
to
our
schools,
to
chair
Robinson
school
committee,
to
our
city
council
and
certainly
to
the
BPS
team,
so
that
all
speaks
to
me
of
Hope
and
a
big
expectation
and
we're
going
to
do
our
best.
A
Right
so
you
know
again
the
deadline
we've
had
several
deadlines,
all
of
which
we've
met
and
exceeded.
You
know
I
think
the
team
has.
We
have
a
very
strong
team
across
stakeholder
team,
that's
working
on
the
agreement
and
so
I
feel
well
prepared.
Having
you
know,
reviewed
it
and
working
with
the
team
as
we've
met
those
initial
benchmarks
and
we
will
meet
the
rest.
But
again
our
goal
is
to
proceed.
Our
goal
is
who's
going
to
be
nowhere.
We,
you
know
meeting
the
needs
of
the
whole
child.
A
A
So
this
is
actually
a
deep
life
work
for
me,
I,
regardless
of
the
district,
whether
it
was
here
or
Somerville,
I,
see
broad
votes
as
as
art
as
the
adults,
failing
students
and
and
I.
Don't
like
that,
I
I
in
myself
included
so
one
of
the
first
things
they
did
I
think
it
was
actually
the
the
morning
that
I
after
I
was
appointed
was
to
ask
the
team
to
stop
working
on
the
dropouts.
A
I
think
that
the
pandemic
is
extremely
challenging
and
students
that
were
here
as
in
other
districts
and
they
were
off
track.
They
became
very
much
off
track
during
the
time.
So
you
know
it
really
is
a
system
you
have
to
have
a
system
for
it,
and,
and
part
of
that
is
having
a
strong
attendance
program
where
you're
really
working-
and
you
see
a
pattern
involve
in
the
attendance.
A
You
know,
we
know
the
students
that
have
dropped
out,
we're
waiting
for
the
attendance
to
finalize.
So
we
can
see
if
there's
any
additional.
We
partnered
deeply
with
the
re-engagement
center
and
it
means
the
re-engagement
center
door
knocks
they
go
out.
You
know
our
supervisor's
attendants
go
out
and
the
goal
is
to
make
a
reconnection
with
the
family
and
the
student
who
sometimes
the
student
doesn't
see
a
path
forward
and
it's
helping
the
student
understand.
A
There
is
always
a
path
forward,
so
we're
going
to
be
working
every
single
student
and
that's
really
how
you
get
from
you
know,
I
think
it
was
like
a
7.5
or
6
drop
out
when
I
first
came
into
the
network
suit
position
down
to
a
4.5
in
in
even
not
satisfied
until
every
student
is
contacted
and
we
have
some
option.
It
also
means
engaging
adulthood
which
we're
fortunate
to
have
a
strong,
Adult
Day
program
here
in
the
city,
because
some
students
reach
an
age
with
with
work
and
so
forth
in
the
real
different
opportunity.
A
So
we'll
be
doing
all
of
that,
and-
and
this
will
be
a
piece
of
data
that
I'll
be
following
greatly
as
we
build
these
systems
back
into
the
VPS.
There.
A
So
we
have,
we
have
a
safety
scripted
out.
I
mean
were
that
to
happen.
You
know
when
it
happens.
During
the
day
we
have
a
safety
team,
we
dispatch
very
strong
to
come
to
the
school
to
support
the
community,
our
social
workers.
You
know,
if
there's
a
situation
where
students
are
seeing
something
you
know.
Certainly
we
would
have
our
social
workers
here
with
social
emotional
supports,
contacting
families
letting
them
know.
A
A
C
Quite
an
exciting
day,
we've
had
a
couple
first
day
of
school.
Now
we
sent
off
the
older
students
and
then
kindergarteners
a
Pre-K
started,
and
now
it's
the
first
day
of
school
for
our
superintendent,
so
Mary
has
been
incredibly
hard
at
work
already
I've
been
saying,
it
doesn't
necessarily
feel
like.
C
This
is
her
first
day
because
we've
already
been
on
the
phone
early
in
the
morning
late
at
night,
troubleshooting
issues
napping
out
what's
to
come
next
and
find
anyone
more
excited
about
the
future
of
our
district,
more
passionate
about
the
young
people
and
more
knowledgeable
about
what
we
need
to
do
from
the
littlest
details.
All
the
way
up
to
the
big
picture,
so
I
couldn't
be
more
thrilled
that
accused
before
here
for
the
district
as
our
new
superintendent
today
and
we're
starting
out
the
day.
B
C
C
So
all
of
the
school
visits
that
I've
had
the
chance
to
go
up
to
accompany
Mary
alongside
this
year
have
been
incredibly
hopeful
and
we
are
committed
to
making
sure
that
not
only
does
that
good
stuff
happen
in
the
classrooms
and
support
our
Educators
and
young
people
and
School
staff,
but
we
recognize
that
what
happens
in
schools
is
directly
tied
to
everything
going
on
in
the
community,
so
we're
wrapping
around
all
sorts
of
resources
and
services
through
our
schools
and
our
children's
cabinet,
and
it's
incredible
momentum
for
the
city
of
Boston.
What.
C
Mary
has
been
working
very,
very
hard
anytime
that
we
had
an
issue.
She
was
calling
me
I
most
times.
I
didn't
even
have
to
call
her.
C
Yeah
I'm
incredibly
believed
that
we,
the
officer,
is
safe
and
something
worse
did
not
happen.
Those
close
calls
are
too
much
and
we
are
a
city,
that's
less
in
that
our
Public
Safety
numbers
are
headed
in
the
right
direction
and
we're
seeing
Improvement
and
that's
not
necessarily
the
case
for
every
major
city
around
the
country.
That
is
a
credit
to
the
kinds
of
partnership
and
community
policing
and
work.
C
So
this
is
a
reminder
of
the
risks
that
our
Public
Safety
staff
and
and
officers
and
First
Responders
experience
on
a
day-to-day
basis,
so
very
grateful
for
their
work,
and
it's
all
the
more
motivation
that
we
have
to
get
through
pauses
and
put
the
resource
in
the
right
places.
So
we
don't
have
to
be
talking
about
guns
on
our
streets
and
Pilots.
