Description
We catch you up on the Boston City League Basketball All-Star action from Northeastern University's Cabot Center on Saturday, with highlights of both games, and we let you know which BPS Athletes earned player of the year honors on this week's edition of Boston Neighborhood Sports.
A
After
capping
off
the
MIAA
state
tournament,
last
week
out
in
Springfield,
we
had
one
last
chance
to
see
the
city's
top
high
school
basketball
players
in
action
this
season,
and
that
was
at
this
year's
Boston
City
League
all-star
game.
The
city's
best
and
brightest
converged
over
at
northeastern
University's
Cabot
Center
on
Saturday
morning
and
boy
did
they
put
on
a
show,
let's
head
out
to
the
cabinet
Center
at
Northeastern?
First
up,
it's
the
boys,
that's
Johnny,
Williams,
the
head
coach
of
the
division
division,
two
state
champion
tech,
Boston
Bears.
A
They
took
on
Team
Shawn
Ryan
in
this
one.
First
quarter,
O'brien's
Rivaldo
Soares
knocks
down
the
deep
three
for
Team
Williams
and
later
on
the
first
CJ
Martin's
burying
a
three
of
his
own
for
team
Shawn
Ryan
cuts,
the
team
Williams
lead
down
to
five
ensuing
possession.
Shemar
Moore
gets
the
behind-the-back
pass
from
his
tech.
Boston
teammate
Maurice
works
for
the
layup
team,
Williams
up
after
the
first
quarter.
Second
quarter
now
it's
West
Roxbury
Justin
Brooks,
with
the
one-handed
flushed
right
there.
It
cuts
the
lead
down
to
three.
A
Then
very
next
play
it's
Damien
Barbosa
deep
three
for
Team
Williams.
They
led
by
three
at
the
half
early
third
quarter.
Now
it's
Maurice
works,
throw
in
the
ally
you
alley-oop
up
to
Rivaldo
Soares
seven-point
lead
for
team
Williams,
then
on
the
ensuing
possession
CJ
Martens
again
burying
the
corner.
Three
keep
and
team
Ryan
close
there
in
the
third
quarter.
Fourth
quarter
now:
team
Ryan
down
by
one
Jeremiah
Burke's
sharp
shooter,
levar
Williams
buries
the
trifecta
team.
A
Ryan
grabs
a
two-point
lead,
wait
around
the
fourth
quarter:
wall,
Sidhu
Hollis,
putting
on
a
show
alley-oop
to
himself
for
the
highlight
reel:
Jam
cuts
the
lead
down
to
one,
the
tech,
Boston;
coaches,
love
that
minute
30
left
to
go
and
Johnny
orti
sneaks
in
for
the
rebound
right,
Derek,
smallest
guy
on
the
court,
with
biggest
heart
as
team
Ryan
that
hangs
on
to
win
83-79
girls
side.
Now
they
see
the
mascots
having
a
great
time
they're
at
the
all-star
game.
Earlier
1st
quarter,
it's
Latin
Academy's,
Caitlin
Leahy,
knocking
down
the
three
from
long
distance.
A
Five
will
run
to
start
the
game,
14
Carla
hands
later
on
the
first
half,
it's
new
missions,
just
shari
green
slithering
in
for
the
layup
cuts,
the
lead
down
to
then
later
on
in
the
first
quarter
were
tied
up
at
ten
Matteo
young
banks
home
the
three.
They
were
tied
at
13
apiece
after
one
2nd
quarter.
A
Now
it's
Latin
Academy's,
Fiona
Mannion,
going
to
work
inside
she
puts
team
Carla
hands
up
by
6,
then
with
under
a
minute
to
go
in
the
half
its
grace
burns,
knocking
down
the
mid-range
jumper
as
team
Phoebe,
Pham
cuts
it
to
a
three-point
lead
at
the
break
middle
of
the
third
quarter.
Now
it's
Shania
Tarver
with
a
given
go
from
Mannion
nine-point
lead
for
team,
Carla,
hands
and
late.
A
The
third
quarter
to
even
Phoebe
Pham
trying
to
cut
it
down,
but
it's
Mannion
finding
her
Latin
Academy
teammate
Michaela
Russell
on
the
break,
then,
at
the
end
of
the
fourth
quarter,
it's
Ashley
surrett,
swishing
home.
The
three
cutting
into
the
team.
Carla
hands
lead,
but
then
way
players
are
too
tough
down
the
stretch.
That's
the
desire
Thornton's
burying
the
triple
off
the
feed
from
Colby
Upchurch.
Then
a
couple
of
minutes
later,
it's
Thornton
again
knocking
it
down
from
long
distance.
She
puts
team
hands
up
by
12.
A
They
go
on
to
win
62
to
49,
always
a
lot
of
fun
at
the
Sea
League
all-star
game.
Now,
in
addition
to
the
two
games,
the
VPS
etic
department
and
the
boston
scholar,
athletes
foundation
handed
out
some
awards
on
Saturday,
including
naming
the
Player
of
the
Year
for
the
boys
and
girls
divisions
on
the
boys
side.
Well,
not
much
of
a
surprise.
Here.
A
Tech
Boston
of
senior
forward
Walter
to
Hollis
was
named,
be
2018,
Boston,
City,
League
boys
basketball
player
of
the
year,
while
Walter
was
the
spark
plug
from
2018
city
champion
and
state
champion
tech,
Boston
Bears,
put
up
23
points,
10,
rebounds,
7,
steals
and
7
blocks
in
the
city
championship,
along
with
averaging
19
points
and
7
rebounds
to
the
last
three
games,
the
Division
two
state
tournament
for
tech
Boston.
So
congratulations
to
Walter
to
Hollis
on
that
award
phenomenal
season
for
him.
Then.
A
Meanwhile,
on
the
girls
side,
it's
been
away:
Senior
Center,
mayara,
Carter
earning
the
2018
girls,
Boston
City,
League
basketball
player
of
the
year
Carter
put
up
22
points.
16
rebounds
5
assists
in
three
blocks
at
this
year's
City
championship
and
let
her
Fenway
Panthers
to
the
state
semifinals
for
the
third
time,
the
last
four
seasons.
A
In
addition,
me,
Eric
Carter
made
her
third
straight
City
League,
all-star
appearance
on
Saturday,
so
gratulations
to
me
era
as
well,
that
pretty
much
puts
a
bookend
on
the
high
school
basketball
season,
but
the
VPS
middle
school
championships
are
just
around
the
corner.
So
there's
still
some
more
action
on
the
city
Hardware
to
catch
over
the
next
couple
of
weeks.
But
for
now
that's
gonna.
Do
it
for
sports
this
week,
folks
be
sure
to
come
right
back
here
next
week
for
more
on
Boston
neighborhoods
sports.
