From YouTube: Roslindale Library Ribbon Cutting 12/04/2021
Description
Mayor Wu, Boston Public Library President David Leonard, elected officials, and members of the BPL community offer remarks as they celebrate the newly renovated Roslindale Library branch.
A
So
welcome
to
everybody.
Thank
you
so
much
for
coming
out
on
this
chilly
day.
At
least
we
have
the
sun
in
our
favor.
My
name
is
jennifer
hawes
and
I'm
the
new
branch
librarian
for
this
fabulous
roslindale
branch
library.
A
I've
gotten
to
know
some
folks
little
by
little,
even
though
I've
only
been
here
two
weeks
but
everybody's
been
so
welcoming
and
the
we've
been
staff
is
working,
been
working
hard
behind
the
scenes
to
get
the
place,
all
sparkly
and
shiny
and
ready
for
this
community.
That
really
really
deserves
a
beautiful
library
and
it's
lonely
in
there.
So
we're
really
really
ready
to
have
folks
come
on
in,
and
so
I'm
so
glad
that
that
you
all
came
out.
A
I
can't
wait
to
meet
each
and
every
one
of
you
same
with
our
fabulous
staff
over
here
and
thanks
again,
and
I'm
going
to
turn
it
over
to
the
president
of
the
library,
david
leonard.
B
Thanks
so
much
jennifer
and
let's
just
introduce
all
of
the
staff
locally
who'll
be
working
here,
so
you
know
who
to
see
inside
and
come
out
to
so
we
have
jennifer
hawes
tessa,
dr
zones,
timothea
anthony
who's,
our
branch,
custodian,
aaron,
celeste
and
mary
devine,
and
did
I
miss
anyone
just
a
reminder?
B
This
is
one
more
staff
person
than
we
had
here
in
rosweldale
before
we
closed
thanks
to
the
city
of
boston's
operating
budget,
so
we
have
one
more
position
than
we
than
we
had
before
some
people
who
are
here
before
some
people
who
are
here
from
the
rest
of
the
system
and
some
people
who
are
joining
the
first,
the
team
for
the
first
time.
B
So
I
want
to
just
give
you
a
few
opening
comments,
introduce
our
first
real,
a
very
important
speaker
and
then
I'll
act
as
as
master
of
ceremonies
for
our
our
hopefully
short
program
on
this
brisk
saturday
morning,
and
so
we
are
here
for
one
very
special
and
important
purpose
to
celebrate
the
opening,
the
reopening
of
the
renovated
branch
of
the
boston
public
library
at
roslindale.
B
Now
we
needed
several
things
to
help
make
a
branch
library
work
and
come
alive.
We've
just
met
the
staff.
The
staff
are
an
incredible
part
of
our
work
in
the
neighborhood.
The
other
thing
is
that
we
need
is
a
engaged,
strong,
active
community
that
will
hello
and
a
few
dogs
that
will
embrace
the
branch
and
I
think,
we'll
check
the
box
on
that
one.
Yes,.
B
And
then
we
need
well,
we
need
an
actual
branch
as
well,
and
so
what
I
think
you'll
discover
a
bit
later
on
is
that
we've
kept
the
integrity
of
the
original
architecture
of
the
building,
but
improved
it
added
little
pops
of
color,
it's
more
transparent,
it's
going
to
be
easier
to
preserve,
but
the
the
inside
it
now
feels
bigger
on
the
inside
than
it
does
on
the
outside.
B
But
the
other
thing
that
we
need.
None
of
this
would
be
possible
and
we'll
thank
several
people
throughout
the
program
this
morning.
But
none
of
this
would
be
possible
without
the
commitment
of
the
city
of
boston
and
the
capital
funds
to
do
that,
and
when
we
were
last
here
together,
we
were
across
the
street
in
adams
in
adams
park,
and
that
was
almost
three
mayors
ago.
B
So
what
I
would
like
to
do
without
further
ado
is
to
introduce
to
you
someone
who
is,
I
think,
no
stranger
to
many
people
in
the
group,
our
first
woman
person
of
color
asian
american
and
mother
elected
as
the
mayor
of
the
city
of
boston,
your
neighbor
mayor,
michelle
wu.
C
Good
morning,
roslindale
wow
so
exciting
to
see
everyone
I
wanna.
I
know
there
are
several
elected
officials
here.
If
any
of
elected
officials
can
hear
my
voice
come
up
to
the
microphone,
I
want
to
give
you
the
mic
for
a
few
seconds.
I
know
I
see
my
council
colleagues
here
so
please
join
me.
I
think
I
senator
rush
and
and
representative
consalvo
too,
if
you're
still
here
come
come
towards
the
mic.
I
want
to
make
sure
you
you
get
a
chance
to
say
hello
as
well.
So
thank
you
so
much
david.
C
C
I
think
as
many
one,
no
everyone
many
people
know
I
live
not
even
a
five
minute
walk
that
way,
so
we
will
be
here
all
the
time.
With
with
my
kiddos
and
we've
been
counting
down
the
days
of
my
household,
I
have
a
lot
of
thanks.
C
All
of
these
folks
in
city
hall
have
been
fighting
for
this
and
fighting
for
the
funding
and
the
budgets
and
the
schedules
to
move
along.
So
I
just
want
to
make
sure
to
really
really
especially
thank
you
today
on
the
community
side
as
our
treasured
partner,
the
trustees
of
the
boston
public
library
do
so
much
for
our
branches
throughout
the
city.
Thank
you,
chair,
priscilla,
douglas
is
here
with
us
today,
as
well
as
trustees,
joe
berman
and
ben
bradley,
and
senator
mike
rush.
C
Okay,
I'm
going
to
talk
a
little
bit
more
in
a
second
but
I'll
pass
it
over.
We'll
start,
oh
hey,
we'll
start
with
city,
councilor
ricardo
arroyo,.
D
Yeah,
I
will
thank
you.
Everybody
libraries
are
a
place
for
community
a
place
for
refuge,
a
place
for
learning,
and
so
I
am
thrilled
that
roslindale
has
such
an
accessible
resource
to
them.
That
is
now
better
and
better
than
it's
ever
been,
and
so
thank
you
all
for
your
work.
I
also
want
to
thank
my
predecessor,
who
is
not
here,
counselor
tim
mccarthy,
who
worked
very
hard
to
get
this
done,
and
so
thank
you
to
him.
Thank
you
to
the
city
and
thank
you
to
all
of
you.
Thank
you.
E
Thank
you
good
morning,
everyone
as
someone
who
grew
up
right
across
the
street
from
the
egleston
square
branch
of
the
public
library.
I
know
exactly
what
this
resource
means
for
this
community,
and
so
I'm
really
excited
to
be
here.
I'm
really
excited
to
be
your
one
of
your
newly
elected
city
councilors.
I
know
we
only
have
one
small
precinct
in
roslindale,
but
I'm
really
happy
to
be
representing
you
and
I'm
really
happy
to
be
with
you
here
with
you
today
to
celebrate
the
opening
of
this
amazing
resource
in
this
community.
Thank
you.
F
Good
morning,
everyone
really
gorgeous
day
to
be
out
here
for
a
really
important
cause
of
the
reopening
of
the
library.
As
council
arroyo
said,
libraries
are
so
important
to
our
city
there's
the
center
of
our
civic
spaces.
When
my
parents
were
working
overtime
and
double
shifts,
they
basically
handed
us
off
to
the
librarian
librarians
at
our
library
at
in
lower
mills
and
then
in
high
park.
So
they
play
a
vital
role
for
all
of
us.
They
don't
care
if
you're,
rich
or
you're
poor.
The
doors
are
open
to
everyone.
F
G
Hi
everyone
thank
you
for
letting
me
be
here
for
this
special
occasion
as
a
school
teacher,
and
I
have
this
epic
picture
when
I
was
10
years
old
and
I'm
holding
a
sign
on
adam
street
in
front
of
the
adam
street
branch
library,
saying
save
our
libraries
when
they
were
making
cuts
in
the
80s
to
you
know
close
libraries
and,
as
a
teacher
like
I
said,
and
my
aunt
now
every
day
is
walking
up
the
street
to
the
adams
street
library,
bringing
home
her
books
and
sharing
them
with
our
family.
G
So
libraries
matter
education,
matters,
making
sure
that
we're
bringing
the
community
together
and
opening
spaces
like
this
and,
like
ruth
c
mentioned
it's
a
place
for
children
to
spend
time
to
not
just
read
but
have
have
a
place
to
come
together,
and
so
I'm
really
looking
forward
to
this
library
and
all
of
them
across
the
city.
So
thank
you
so
much.
I
H
I
Just
in
time
no,
I
will
be
very
brief.
Good
morning
everybody
state
representative
rob
consalvo
so
proud
to
be
here.
I
would
just
say
two
things
one.
When
I
was
a
member
of
the
boston
city
council
proudly
representing
roslindale,
I
remember
hundreds
and
hundreds
of
people,
many
in
this
crowd,
advocating
in
my
office
for
a
new
public
library.
This
library
is
because
of
all
the
work
that
you've
done,
the
friends
of
the
library,
the
neighbors,
the
residents
laura
gang
and
everybody
who's
fought
so
hard
for
this.
Congratulations
to
the
roslindale
community.
H
Well,
the
mike
is
back
okay.
So
thank
you
again.
I
I
don't
think,
there's
anything
any
gift
we
can
give
to
to
our
young
people
that's
more
precious
than
maybe
a
little
more
precious
than
life
itself,
but
not
quite
but
reading
the
gift
of
reading
and
to
have
a
place
to
go
and
to
be
safe
and,
to
you
know,
open
the
doors
for
all
those
adventures
and
all
the
fun
and
all
the
learning
you
get
to
do
on
your
own,
not
in
a
classroom
or
from
a
teacher.
H
C
C
This
changed
the
trajectory
of
the
history
of
the
united
states,
and
so
we
are
continuing
to
carry
that
legacy
forward
and
all
the
work
that
we're
doing
in
the
city
of
boston.
You
heard
a
little
bit
about
the
amazing
features,
the
universal
accessibility
that
we
will
feature
within
this
space.
Libraries
are
so
much
more
than
our
books,
they're,
truly
community
hubs
and
treasures.
C
C
B
Thank
you
mayor
and
our
fellow
electeds.
Congratulations
to
all
of
you.
We
look
forward
to
working
with
you
and
building
our
strong
partnership.
We
do
have
four
official
speakers
in
addition
to
our
guests
that
we
will
now
hear
from
before
we
get
to
the
ribbon
cutting
itself,
but
without
further
ado.
We
know
that
libraries
exist
at
the
intersection
of
education,
arts
and
culture
and
civic
engagement,
and
we
are
grateful
to
our
next
speaker
for
pulling
double
duty.
B
As
both
a
trustee
of
the
library
and
an
elected
official
senator
mike
rush
has
been
a
longtime
supporter
and
we're
sorry,
we
missed
your
tree
lighting
a
couple
of
weeks
back
when
we
were
not
right,
open
he's
one
of
our
newest
members
of
the
board
of
trustees,
a
body
of
15
people,
and
it
is
a
pleasure
to
have
him
and
have
his
advice.
Please
welcome
senator
mike
rush.
J
Thank
you,
mayor,
wu,
boston,
public
library,
trustee
chair,
priscilla,
douglas
bpo,
president
david
leonard,
our
state
representatives,
liz
malia,
rob
gonsalvo
and
nikkel
gaido,
our
boston
city
councilors,
who
do
a
phenomenal
job,
felix
and
kendra,
aaron
and
ruth
z.
Thank
you
so
much
thank
you
to
the
library
staff
and
thank
you
so
so
much
for
the
driving
force
behind
this
incredible
day,
the
friends
of
the
roslindale
library.
J
I
am
honored
to
be
here
this
morning
for
this
outstanding
occasion,
because
for
many
of
us,
since
our
childhood,
up
until
today,
let's
face
it,
there
is
nothing
nothing
better
than
going
to
the
library
right.
I
think
we
can
all
agree
on
that
right
from
its
founding
in
1848.
Until
today,
the
boston
public
library
continues
to
be
the
instrument
that
changes
lives.
The
library
is
the
greatest
equalizer
for
all
people.
It
provides
incredible
opportunities
for
students,
seniors
families,
job
seekers,
the
economically
disadvantaged
life
learners.
J
J
No
question
about
it:
it
provides
escape
pick
up,
a
book
read
a
page
or
two
and
the
world
around
you
recedes.
The
world
has
lately
been
much
too
much
with
us.
As
I
say,
reading
is
the
one
addiction
the
government
should
encourage
truly
inspiring
words
from
roslindale's
own
mary,
mcgrory
and
so
appropriate
on
this
important
day.
Again,
it
is
an
honor
and
privilege
to
join
you
this
morning
on
this
momentous
occasion.
Thank
you.
B
Please
join
me
in
welcoming
my
other
boss
to
the
podium
chair
of
the
board
of
trustees,
priscilla
douglas.
K
Here
we
go.
Thank
you.
What
a
great
day
we
have
the
perfect
weather
we've
got
the
perfect
mayor.
We've
got
the
perfect
people
in
in
this
community
to
come
out
here
today
and
I'll.
Tell
you
what
you
know
what
I'm
most
excited
about.
K
Wait
until
you
see
the
new
children's
area.
It
is
a
wonderful
area.
It's
filled
up
with
all
of
these
great
books,
there's
a
labyrinth
for
you
to
go
through
and
you
can
even
get
lost
in
and
if
you're,
a
teen
think
about
that
they've
got
all
the
marvel,
comics
and
graphic
novels
if
you're
a
senior
or
somebody
who
has
our
universal
access.
There's
area
for
you
to
go
in.
Have
your
meetings
meet
with
your
friends
and
connect.
K
K
So
I'm
not
going
to
talk
longer,
because
I
know
you
want
to
get
in
there
and
see
the
library-
and
I
just
want
to
let
you
know,
though,
that
the
trustees
we
have
today.
We
have
several
of
the
trustees
here
and
I
want
to
point
them
out
because,
along
with
the
mayor
and
david
and
the
staff,
the
trustees
work
on
your
behalf
and
if
they'll
there's
been
bradley
is
here
he's
waving
his
hand,
zamawa
arena
joyce
linehan
joe
berman,
is
here.
K
K
B
It
is
a
partnership
between
them
and
the
architecture,
firms
who
and
their
consultants
and
contractors
who
all
make
this
vision
a
reality,
and
so
I'd
like
to
welcome
to
the
podium
to
address
us
as
well.
The
chief
of
operations
for
the
city
of
boston,
in
whose
department
lives
the
property
and
public
facilities
department,
chief
dion,
irish.
L
L
What
a
great
day
to
celebrate
the
completion
of
a
major
renovation
of
the
roslindale
branch
library,
another
staple
in
the
city's
commitment
to
improving
access
and
quality
in
our
libraries,
the
roslindale
library
was
a
12.2
million
dollar
project
that
enhanced
the
accessibility
features
within
the
building.
Some
of
the
new
features
feature
a
children's
area
that
is
now
an
early
literacy
space
and
collections
arranged
in
a
labyrinth
to
form
a
maze
for
kids.
L
The
adult
area
features
a
laptop
bar
and
the
front
windows
views
out
to
roslindale
square
each
area.
For
the
adults,
teens
and
children
features
color-coded,
shelving
and
new,
coordinated
soft
seating
tables
and
chairs
on
the
exterior.
The
front
entrance
provides
universal
access
with
a
sloped
walkway
and
an
outdoor
reading,
terrace
created
with
a
seating
and
plantings.
L
L
Lastly,
as
chief
of
operations
for
the
city,
the
public
facilities
department
who
oversees
and
manages
the
mayor's
capital
projects
is
within
my
cabinet
and
is
responsible
for
the
complete
oversight
and
leadership
of
our
capital
improvements.
So
it
is
with
great
enthusiasm
that
I
recognize
and
acknowledge
the
pfd
project
team.
First,
I
want
to
thank
greg
rideout.
Our
senior
project
manager,
who
had
overall
responsibility
for
managing
the
project,
give
it
up
for
greg,
also
stan
seto
and
brian
higginbottom,
who
are
the
clerk
of
the
works
who
are
daily
ears
and
eyes
on
the
project.
L
I
would
also
want
to
thank
our
visionary
design
team
from
leah's
wisdom,
vapor
zaful,
I'm
sorry
and
associates.
They
took
our
ideas
and
our
input
and
developed
a
beautiful
and
inclusive
design
that
reflects
the
needs
of
the
community,
and
I
also
want
to
thank
our
general
contractor
northern
contracting
corporation
for
their
great
work
on
this
project.
They
did
a
fantastic
job
on
this
renovation
and
design.
Really
the
design
really
came
to
life.
So
we
look
forward
to
seeing
this.
Thank
you
all
again
for
your
time.
B
Great,
thank
you.
In
addition
to
those
key
individuals,
we
also
want
to
thank
our
bpl
project
management
team
under
leadership
of
director
of
operations,
eamon
shelton
and
also
the
team
that
helped
put
today
together
under
the
leadership
of
our
director
of
special
events.
Emily
takarsic,
a
lot
of
hands
went
into
this,
and
we
want
to
appreciate
that.
B
So
one
more
very
important
group
to
hear
from
before
we
get
to
the
ribbon
cutting
is
the
other
key
partner
and
group
of
stakeholders
on
advocacy
for
this
work
on
enhancing
library
services,
and
I
know
they're
going
to
be
an
incredible
partner
to
the
new
branch
staff
team
and
will
share
leadership
of
what
what
the
community
here
needs
wants
and
we
will
do
together,
and
that
is
the
friends
of
the
roslindale
branch
of
the
boston
public
library.
B
Please
welcome
to
the
podium
natalie
mutely,
the
current
president
of
the
friends.
M
I'm
not
the
president
but
good
morning,
and
thank
you
all
for
coming
out
today.
My
name
is
natalie
macelli
and
I
have
volunteered
with
the
friends
of
the
roslindale
library.
Since
2015.,
I
have
two
teenage
sons
who
are
thrilled
that
the
branch
is
open
again
because,
like
all
of
you,
we
believe
in
and
support
the
library
as
a
fundamental
pillar
of
our
community.
M
The
friends
and
all
volunteer
group
have
been
raising
funds
providing
innovative
programming
and
promoting
library
services
in
roslindale
for
many
years.
While
the
library
was
closed,
we
worked
hard
to
maintain
a
sense
of
community
through
virtual
programming
partnerships
with
local
organizations
and
regular
newsletters.
We
want
to
thank
a
number
of
people
who
made
this
renovation
possible.
As
you
will
recall,
the
original
funding
allocated
was
not
sufficient
for
the
needs
of
a
library
built
in
1961
and
barely
improved.
M
Thank
you
to
former
mayors,
menino
and
walsh,
whose
commitment
to
libraries
made
this
renovation
possible
to
our
neighbor
current
mayor
wu
and
to
the
boston
city,
councilors
and
other
elected
officials
who
helped
us
secure
these
funds.
Eamon
shelton,
allison,
ford
and
priscilla
foley
of
the
bpl
were
also
extremely
helpful
during
this
process.
M
B
Yeah
and
apologies
for
the
accidental
promotion
there.
I
know
it's
a
team
effort
and
it
truly
does
take
a
village,
that's
probably
nowhere
more
true
than
here,
and
so
now
we
have
one
more
very
important
thing
to
do,
and
this
symbolizes,
I
think
the
renaissance
of
interest
in
and
commitment
to
public
libraries
in
our
city
that
we
are
really
seeing
with
currently
at
least
over
140
million
dollars
of
investment
in
the
entire
system.
B
This
is
our
third
branch
ribbon
cutting
this
year,
which
is
unheard
of
and
unprecedented,
and
thank
you
to
all
our
officials
for
making
that
possible.
So
now
we're
going
to
line
up
here
and
the
mayor
and
the
youngest
among
us
are
going
to
hold
the
ribbon
and
we
will
cut
the
ribbon,
and
that
will
mean
the
branch
will
be
open.
