From YouTube: Boston Public Library Repatriation Ceremony
Description
With the help of the federal government, the Boston Public Library's Special Collections department returns three rare books originally printed in 15th-16th century Italy to the Italian government in a repatriation ceremony.
A
Good

everybody,
my

our

international
law
enforcement
partners
for
bringing
it
all
together
today.
Without
further
ado,
I
would
like
to
introduce
and
call
up
our
special
agent
in
charge
here
in
Boston,
very
mathy.
Three
thank.

I,
want

I
want
to
also
welcome
our

the

and
all
of
our
law

partners
in
calling
from
Italy
who
have
made
the
journey
and
our
colleagues
here
in
New
England.
Thank
you
all
many
of
you
are
probably
wondering
why
here
why
in
the
Boston
Public
Library?
B
Of
course,
the
Italian
community
in
March
2014,
an
investigation,
began
with
the
seizure
of
198
Roman
coins.
The
coins
were
interdicted
by
our
partners
at
US,
Customs
and
Border
Protection
in
Ohio.
They
were
being
shipped
from
the
United
Arab
Emirates,
with
the
destination
of
Providence
Rhode
Island.
The
evaluation
investigation
of
these
coins
led
us
to
believe
they
were
misappropriated
and
shipped
in
violation
of
US
law,
with
respect
to
cultural
properties
that
enabled
us
to
seize
these
items
and
ultimately
for
finem
and
present
them.
B
We
know
it
was
in
the
Archbishop's
collection
because
it
bears
his
personal
signature
on
the
front
pages,
something
he
did
to
all
of
his
personal
books
toward
the
end
of
his
life.
The
archbishop
donate
his
entire
collection
to
be
serve
in
a
library
bearing
his
name:
the
library
of
polluter
V,
so
ill
disorders,
Cardinal
Torres.
At
the
time
luck
library
was
then
protected
by
a
papal
bull,
an
official
decree
issued
at
that
time
by
pope
clement
v
aid
in
1593.
That
forbids
the
removal
of
the
item
from
the
library
with
the
consequence
of
excommunication.
B
B
Once
the
BPL
was
alerted
that
this
book
was
likely
the
cultural
property
of
Italy,
they
immediately
took
steps
to
work
with
HSI
in
the
agencies
that
you
see
here
today
to
repatriate
these
items
with
the
Italian
government,
so
the
effect
of
cultural
antiquities.
It
robs
the
nations
of
their
rightful
history.
It's
the
people,
their
pride
and
identity
and
fundamental
historical
contributions.
B
Their
ancestors
made
the
today's
modern
moral
HSI
is
honored
to
have
worked
with
US
Customs
and
Border
Protection,
the
United
States
Attorney's
Office,
the
Italian
Carabinieri,
the
Boston
Public
Library,
to
make
it
all
possible
to
return
these
rare
artifacts.
So
clearly
that
belonged
to
the
Italian
people
and
finally,
I'd
like
to
thank
the
professional
experts
who
were
brought
in
to
verify
the
items
themselves.
Their
combined
expertise
was
an
integral
part
of
why
we're
here
today
they

It
would
not
have
been

without
the
tireless

that
you
look
forward
when
I
was

I

I

my

investigation
and
was
working
right
here
with

B
C
C
Memories,
especially
for
that
tiny,
and
we
work
together
in
some
repetition
and
some
very
a
very
important
moment
of
our
investigation
life
in
that
period
and
over
the
years,
investigative
cooperation
between
the
Carabinieri
for
the
potassium
cultural
heritage
and
US
Immigration,
custom
enforcement
and
homeland
security
investigation
has
continued
to
consolidate,
leading
to
excise
only
result
in
recovering
important
words
of
our
olicity
removed
from
it'll.
Only
last
December,
the
similar
event
was
Aldean
Washington
DC
in
the
Italian
embassy,
when
IC
and
US
Customs
and
Border
Protection.
C
Well,
I
don't
want
to
enter
more
in
detail
about
the
background
information
on
the
artifacts
that
we
r
%
today,
because
also
reading
Matthews
spoke
about
the
investigation
activity,
but
the
book
on
the
59th
ebook
of
the
virus
in
Abu
Dhabi
Lutheran,
giggles,
nervously
belly
altered
by
the
naginata
later.
The
investigation
start
on
2015
when
the
book
has
been
reported
stolen
from
ludovico
second
to
the
torres
of
the

of
seminary
library,
collection

assisting

Cardinal

C
C
Thus,
providing
significant
evidence
to
establish
that
the
copy
of
the
Boston
Public
Library
was
in
fact
the
book
missing
from
the
library
in
Morella,
so

been
legitimately
purchased
by
in
1980s
by
the
Boston

and
upon
the
skill
discovery
of
the
legal
provenance.
The

in
1949,
several
manuscript
belonging
to
the
State

of
Venice
were
reported
stolen
in
1950.
C
The
tips
were
identified
and
prosecuted
by
detail
and
judicial
authority.
However,
the
solar

and

were
never
recovered
in
2030

For
this
reason,
the

for
the

For

I
would

to
stress
my

C
Thank
you
very
much,
but
let
me
say
something
about
my
colleague
our
members.
Talk
I
really
express
my
great
appreciation
for
Dave
recovering
of
these
ancient
coins,
also
because
it
was
in
in

of
an
investigation
of
diluted

Madeline

I
asked
to
extend
my
gratitude
to
all
the
u.s.
entities
that
made
this
up.
C
Let
me
express
my
receipt
also
to
my
concern.
Italian
general
concern
equal
recently
that
represent
here
the
eternal
environment
for
this
participation
with
this
sending
for
concern
as
convinces
the
spirit
of
this
event,
testifying
the
great
partnership
we
have
consolidated
over
the
years
and
the
future
will
allow
us
to
recover.
Other
important
works
about
my
droid
life
that
public
and
private
institutions
are
experiencing
a
change
of
the
section
in
terms
of
cultural
heritage.
C
This
transition
has
shipped
from
the
concept
of
the
need
to
return
soul
and
culture
property
to
its
rightful
owner,
basic
method,
on
low
to
a
broadly
shared
culture
of
restitution
on

course
in
Italy.
Thank
you
for
your
great
work
in
the
collaboration
provided
to
this
community
command
to
the
protection
that
arises.
Thank
you.

B
D
Thank
you

in
general.
Thank
you,
I,
don't
know
anyone
that
can
come
to
this
microphone
rest
of
the
day
can
be
as
interesting
as
the
two
of
you
have
been
today,
but
I
want
to
thank
you
for
this
opportunity.
I
also
want
to
welcome
us
attorney
wine,
red

between
suits
in
a
moment
to
come
here.
Also
the
Consul
General
of
Italy,
my
good
friend,
conscious
general
dentist
is
here
so
on,
and
thank
you
as
well.
D
Today
is
an
exciting
day,
with
grilled
to
have
the
three
items
that
the
that
we've
had
in
our
collections
being
returned
to
the
Italian
government
for
restoration
of
these
artifacts
original
place,
a
large
it's
important
for
us
to
do
that
over
the
last
couple
of
years
here
in
embossment,
we've
had
a
lot
of
conversations
or
on
our
around
our
special
collections,
but
I
want
to
thank
before
I
get
into
that.
I
want
to
thank
the
department,
homeland
security,
US,
Immigration
and
Customs
of
what
enforcement's
US
Attorney's
Office,
the
Boston
Public
Library.
D
Our
tells
a
story
of
a
nation
I
tell
the
story,
every
people
and
to
be
here
today
with
all
of
the
difference
that
worked
very
closely
together.
I
want
to
thank
them
for
it.
I
was
also
a
Miss.
I
wanted
to
do
state
represented
by
rushing,
who
is
also
a
member
of
the
boy
here
at
the
bar
college
library
I
think
represented
rushing
for
being
with
us
today.
D
The
wall
public
library
is
committed
to
preserving
our
cultural
history,
we're
very
proud
of
our
special
collections
and
it's
through
the
decades
of
acquisitions
that
we
have
a
long
and
passionate
history.
As
a
result
of
of
this
years
and
years
of
treating
our
special
historic
letters,
I
would
get
most
care
we're
making
some
some
investments
in
our
budget
this
year
we're
making
an
investment
of
15.7
million
dollars
to
a
project
to
be
able
to
preserve
a
live
with
libraries,
most
valuable
assets
and
historical
special
collections
and
manuscripts.
D
It's
also
going
to
allow
us
the
opportunity
to
a
bar
coding
of
over
250,000
rare
books
and
1
million
manuscript
for
the
first
time
ever,
I'm
afraid
when
we
start
to
do
this,
what
will
find
us
on
odds
and
other
governments?
We
will
have
US
Attorney's
Office
and
the
immigration
in
here
again
looking
for
more
things,
but
hopefully
everything
we
have
is
ours
now,
but
it
is
exciting
to
the
opportunities
to
truly
treat
these
menial
scripts
and
in
the
different
out
of
fact
that
we
have
in
the
city
of
Boston
the
way
they
should
be.
D
I
also
want
to
thank
the
wonderful
staff
here
at
the
library.
One
thing
you
will
notice
when
you
take
these
beautiful
works
home
with
you,
they're
in
great
shape.
They're
in
great
shape
is
akia.
Today
they
were
shared
this
library,
with
the
great
staff
that
we
have
here
at
the
Boston
Public
Library.
So
I
want
to
thank
you
as
well
on
behalf
of
the
City
of
Boston
I,
want
to
hope
all
the
visitors,
tourists
and
people
coming
and
will
enjoy
these.
D
E
Thank
you
snare
off
and
I
sir.
We
starting
to
deliver
my
remarks
in
fluent
Italian,
but
I
didn't
want
to
show
up
Special
Agent
in
Charge,
eatery,
so
I
think
I'll
just
stick
to
English.
It
is
an
honor
to
be
here
with
the
Special
Agent
in
Charge,
from
HS
I
with
the
general,
the
mayor,
that
Prindle
from
the
library
and
it's
a
pleasure
to
join
all
of
you
to
celebrate
the
return
of
these
cultural
artifacts
to
the
people
of
Italy.
E
E
Well,
the
US
Attorney's
Office
in
the
United
States,
the
United
States,
have
provided
these
precious
items
with
a
safe
haven
over
the
years,
they're
an
important
part
of
Italian
history
and
they
rightly
belong
in
their
country
of
origin
with
the
Italian
people.
It's
truly
been
an
honor
for
us
to
be
a
part
of
the
process
of
securing
their
safe
return
as
special
agent
in
charge
retreat
detailed.
This
is
no
small
feat,
often
because
the
trafficking
of
cultural
property
is
a
lucrative
business.
E
I'd
like
to
thank
the
Boston
Public
Library
for
their
cooperation
in
recent
months
to
bring
this
repatriation
to
fruition,
as
well
as
the
Italian
government
for
their
patience.
This
has
been
a
long
road,
but
we're
happy
that
we
finally
come
to
the
end
of
it
and
that
these
items
are
going
to
go
back
to
the
people
who
rightfully
owned
them.
F
Thank
You
attorney
wine
road.
This
is
a
tough
act
to
follow
I'm,
best
friend,
old,
head
of
special
collection
for
the
Boston
Public,
Library
and
I'm
here
on
behalf
of
david
leonard
president
of
the
library,
who
is
sorry
not
to
be
here
today
and
it's
a
particular
honor
to
host
the
general
who's
traveled
such
a
great
distance
to
join
us
and
oversee
the
return
of
these
rare
and
important
items.
Italy.
F
So,
today,
boston,
public
libraries
formally
returned
to
medieval
manuscripts
to
the
State
Archives
in
Venice,
the
first
scenario:
Liddell
escola
de
santa
maria
della
misericordia
on
the
Deevil
manuscript,
which
states
from
1392
and
an
illuminated
leaf
from
manuscript
mary
ago
lizella
school
agon
days,
avani
evangelista,
which
dates
from
roughly
14
20.
In
addition,
the
library
will
be
returning
a
printed
collection
of
works
by
Bernard
emo,
collegial
published
in
1590,
the
library
of
ludovico
de
Torres
and
Sicily.
These
three
items
were
acquired
by
the
Boston
Public
Library
between
1950s
and
1980s.
F
All
the
courses
in
good
faith
from
respected
rare
book
dealer
for
a
rare
books
and
manuscripts
collection,
which,
as
narrow
walls
mentioned,
totals
nearly
250,000
item
in
our
verbose
department
and
a
million
managed
gift
in
that
collection
as
well.
The
BPL
has
committed
the
integrity
of
our
collections
as
it
is
for
all
museums,
libraries
and
historical
institutions
that
collect
materials
that
are
hundreds,
if
not
thousands
of
years
old.
Establishing
the
provenance
of
the
items
we
hold
is
an
imperative
and
a
challenge.
F
Recently,
questions
about
the
provenance
of
the
marriage
rolla's
came
to
life
thanks
to
an
independent
researcher
and
a
project
funded
by
the
Boston
Public
Library
to
analyze
and
describe
the
nearly
250
medieval
manuscripts
in
our
collections.
Through
these
extensive
efforts,
it
was
determined
that
the
to
marry
role
of
manuscripts
in
the
vpls
collection
has
been
missing
from
the
State
Archives
in
Venice.
Since

police.
Mr.
F
1600
discussions
without
libraries,
curators
and
others
indicated
that
the
book
was
inappropriately
removed
from
their
collection,
adding
on
those
days,
in
all
cases,
the
librarians
and
proud
to
partner,
with
our
cities,
federal
and
Italian
authorities,
to
investigate
this
matter
seriously,
and
we
jointly
reach
the
conclusion
that
these
materials
should
repatriated
to
their
respective
Italian
institutions.
The
BTL
has
treated
these
items
of
careful
custodianship
since
they
came
to
us
decades
ago,
and
now
we
return
them
to
our
Italian
colleagues
to
continue
for
their
care.
F
I
would
like
to
acknowledge
state
representative
byron,
rushing
trustee
and
a
member
of
the
vpl
special
collections
committees,
which
assisted
with
repatriation
investigation
and
decision
as
well
and
I'd
like
to
offer
also
special
thanks
for
all
of
our
colleagues
at
the
city,
Homeland
Security
and
the
US
Attorney's
Office
for
their
assistance
with
this
process
and
their
continued
support
of
the
library
and
a
dedication
of
cultural
heritage.
Thank
you.
