From YouTube: Mel King "Fab-Lab" Dedication Ceremony
Description
Superintendent Tommy Chang and representatives from Boston Public Schools gather at Madison Park High School in Roxbury to dedicate the school's "fab-lab" in honor of Mel King. The lab is an entrepreneurial space where students are encouraged to learn about technology and gain technical skills.
A
C
B
We
come
out
to
dedicate
our
Fab
Lab
courtesy
of
mr.
mell
king,
who
has
simply
been
anything
short
of
an
icon
here
in
Boston
for
a
number
of
years,
but
again
for
him
to
really
have
the
thought
about
bringing
technology
to
madison
park
in
which
our
students
will
flourish
and
benefit
from
the
skills
that
they
can
develop
in
a
space
such
as
this
really
proves
his
dedication
to
the
city
in
his
residence.
B
B
D
Here
today,
I'll
just
talk
from
here.
First
of
all,
actually
like
to
say
just
a
few
words
about
masam
park
and
then
say
a
few
words
about
mr.
king
masam
park
is
a
leader
in
terms
of
how
we
are
going
to
redefine
high
school
education
in
Boston
and
state
of
Massachusetts
in
our
country.
We
can
no
longer
think
about
our
work
as
helping
our
young
people
get
a
diploma.
A
high
school
diploma
is
not
enough.
D
Our
target,
our
North
Star
needs
to
be
not
only
graduating
them
from
high
school,
but
making
sure
that
they're
on
a
trajectory
to
make
sure
they
have
a
living
wage
job.
That's
what
we
were
preparing
young
people
so
to
be
able
to
put
academic
side
by
side,
career,
technical
education
and
ground
that,
as
part
of
our
high
school
redesign
work
in
this
city
is
exactly
what
Madison
is
lead
not,
and
so
I
want
to
appreciate
Kevin
for
all
your
leadership
on
this
there's
some
just
tremendous
partnerships
that
have
been
here
before
your
you.
D
You
got
here,
but
also
because
of
you,
I'm
thinking
about
the
partnership,
mtm
thinking
about
the
partnerships
with
mast,
I'm
thinking
about
the
partnerships
with
the
possible
project,
and
so
you
are
setting
a
standard
for
other
high
schools
in
boston,
some
wanna.
Thank
you
for
that,
then
that
turned
to
mr.
king.
So
I
had
a
chance
to
meet
Mel
very
early
on
in
my
tenure
in
BPS
and
of
course
I
did
my
homework
like
anybody
else.
E
D
Just
moved
about
the
work
that
you
have
done
in
this
city,
you
have
your
student
graduated
Boston,
Public
Schools,
a
teacher
at
one
time
in
Boston,
Public,
Schools
and
individual
that
has
brought
voice
to
those
who
have
been
most
marginalized
in
our
community,
I.
Think
more
I.
Think
now
more
than
ever,
2016
as
we
move
to
2017,
we
cannot
forget
the
legacy
of
community
activism.
That
has
led
a
broad
change
in
our
country
because
we
need
to
come
together
now.
D
This
is
a
very
important
moment
in
time
and
for
me,
I
think
your
legacy
is
not
only
not
going
to
just
be
what
you
see
in
this
room.
Your
legacy
really
is
what
you've
done
and
the
history
that
you
created
in
this
city.
So
mr.
king,
congratulations,
thank
you
and
thank
you
for
being
a
leader
and
thank
you
for
being
a
role
model
for
our
young
people.
Thanks.
E
Buhler
street
say
a
few
words.
Thank
you
all
thank
you
to
the
partners
that
are
here
this
evening.
Mr.
MacAskill,
thank
you.
We've
been
partners
since
before
the
day
that
you
stepped
into
the
school,
and
it's
been
an
honor
to
work
with
you,
dr.
Holland
really
welcomed
me
when
he
was
interim
here
and
we
were
able
to
work
closely
together.
I
think
it's
a
superintendent
said
Madison
is
the
standard
bear
in
a
lot
of
ways
for
the
way
that
we
want
to
think
about.
Learning
in
this
space
is
really
emblematic
of
that.
E
I've
also
had
the
great
fortune
of
knowing
mr.
king
for
a
long
time,
and
a
couple
know
about
him
he's
a
hard
person
to
think
he
doesn't
take.
Thank
you
very
easily
and
a
lot
of
times.
He
say
thank
you
and
a
lot
of
times.
I
would
say
to
them.
Mr.
Kang,
we
need
to.
We
need
to
name
something
after
you'd,
be
like
nah
man.
E
E
This
may
not
be
the
reward,
because
the
reward
that
you
talk
to
me
about
oftentimes
is
young
people
delivering
on
the
excellence
that
you
know
and
that
we
know
that
they
can
deliver
in.
So
it's
a
guarantee
that,
because
they
have
this
space
and
that
they
have
this
school,
you
will
see
the
excellence
that
you've
worked
hard
for
that
they
continue
to
work
hard
for
as
well.
E
A
Sure
so
has
some
McCaskill
mentioned,
I'm
actually
a
newly
elected
state
representative
for
the
7th
suffolk
district
to
elected.
So
I'll
start
in
january,
and
I
visited
I
mean
a
fifth-generation
roxbury
nato's
from
medicine
is
very
familiar
to
me.
I
visited
a
couple
weeks
ago
as
on
a
formal
tour,
mr.
MacAskill,
who
was
happy
happy
enough
to
host
us
here
and
just
really
got
the
opportunity
to
understand
that
Madison
is
a
true
gem
in
this
community
and
mr.
King
I
just
wanted
to
come
and
honor
you
and
congratulate
you
and
say.
Thank
you.
A
So
much
for
paving
away
for
leadership
for
people
like
me
for
natives
of
Roxbury
I
grew
up
here
on
my
room.
I
can't
paint
off
some
of
the
very
values
that
you
stand
for.
I
was
fortunate
enough
to
be
able
to
pay
a
couple
of
loss
of
public
school
students
who
didn't
have
the
opportunity
to
receive
youth
jobs
throughout
the
summer
time
to
keep
them
out
of
out
of
the
streets
and
just
stay
away
from
violence
in
general.
A
A
G
I'm,
just
so
thrilled
good
to
be
here
and
just
thank
my
Mel
for
everything
he
has
done
for
this
community
and
for
this
school,
and
you
have
always
had
a
vision
that
reach
far
ahead
of
time,
and
this
is
one
of
them.
This
digital
fabrication
lab
was
your
vision
years
ago
and
like
everything
now,
you
have
made
things
happen
for
our
community
and
for
our
kids
for
that
I
forever.
G
Thankful
personally,
thank
you
so
much
for
being
a
mentor
to
so
many
of
us
who
depended
on
guidance
and
wisdom,
and
you
have
provided
that
for
us
and
I
just
want
to
say,
I
wish
you
the
very
best
in
this
room
where
we
serve
it
as
just
a
token
of
all
the
things
that
you
have
represented
and
did
in
our
community
for
you.
So
thank
you.
B
Investigating,
as
we
were
talking
earlier
and
as
we're
saying,
you're
white
after
being
a
resident
in
Springfield
for
30
years
as
a
contrary
to
popular
belief
in
the
western
part
of
the
state,
we
do
have
the
Internet
to
be
the
globe
and
everything.
So
news
does
travel
west,
but
your
legacy
is
much
bigger
than
the
Greater
Boston
area.
B
Folks
in
Springfield
understand
what
you
meant,
because
you
had
impact
there
and
to
have
this
simple
gesture
of
providing
access
and
opportunity
to
our
kids
and
our
neighborhood
for
our
community
just
speaks
volume
of
the
blessing
you
are
into
our
community
and
I
just
say
for
on
behalf
of
madison
park,
and
I
think
I
can't
speak
for
the
community.
Just
thank
you
and
we'd
love
to
hear
from
you
a
few
words
from
you
at
this
mantle
at
this
moment.
C
B
F
First
I'd
like
to
say
thank
you
for
opportunity
here,
but
I'm
still,
a
part
of
the
Friends
of
madison
park
and
part
of
friends
madison
park
is
I'm
a
resident,
roxbury
and
citizen
parson
name
so
part
of
the
united
states,
till
January
21st,
so
I
think
this
is
fabulous,
only
require
song.
I've
spent
30
some
years
for
you
some
years
following
mill
as
he
points
in
the
direction
in
the
future.
This
is
not
great
for
kids.
This
is
great.
For
me,
this
is
great
for
me
as
a
parent.
F
This
is
great
for
me
as
a
resident
Boston.
This
is
great
for
our
country,
because
the
vision
that
Mel
has
always
shown
wait
for
word
moved
us
from
boston.
Soon
you
ought
to
across
the
country
the
idea
of
the
rainbow
coalition,
which
moved
Jessie
forward
and
84
and
88
led
the
way
to
the
election
in
2008.
All
this
has
been
futuristic.
F
I
know
that
the
young
men
and
women
who'll
be
working
out
of
this
lab
would
be
telling
me
I
can't
get
aboard
the
trip
to
Jupiter
2
bars
because
the
other
ones
will
be
going
into
the
future.
This
type
of
technology
moves
us
for
being
a
part
of
friends
of
Madison.
It
was
only
part
of
my
life
cost
as
a
graduate
of
vocational
technical
high
school
I
know
the
importance
of
having
a
skill.
F
I
know
the
importance
of
that
skill
at
how
it
works,
and
even
to
the
day,
the
things
that
I
learned
back
in
1964
have
resin
and
everything
I
do,
because
it
lays
a
foundation
it
gives
young
men
and
women
a
way
to
look
at
the
world
a
very
clear
way,
because
it
puts
things
in
detail.
Mel
has
always
been
about
that
pointing
towards
the
future.
Now
you
know
I.
Thank
you.
I
appreciate
you
on
behalf
of
the
Friends
of
Madison.
G
D
C
C
C
C
Could
they
said
teamwork,
okay
and
so
before
they
left
after
having
a
few
of
them
talk
about
what
it
meant
working
together,
I
sent
upstairs
and
write
down
some
t-shirts
and
what
says
on
the
tin,
t-shirts
is.
Teamwork,
makes
the
dream,
work
and
there's
a
somewhat
picture
of
Martin
Luther
King
jr.
on
the
t-shirt
as
well,
and
so
I
had
enough
for
every
one
of
them.
They
all
wore
them
and
I.
Think
there's
a
nice
picture
somewhere
with
all
of
them,
but
I.
C
Because
it
was
these
13
to
15,
16
year-old
errs,
who
said
teamwork
is
what
made
their
dream
work
and
so
I
just
SAT
there,
and
it's
really
whatever,
and
so
one
of
the
reason
for
asking
who
she
has
pink
is
because
of
that
team
of
folks
that
really
work
to
try
and
to
save
his
place
from
the
I
was
able.
What
but
any
other
changes
save
this
place,
and
so
I
don't
know.
When
you
talk
about
me,
whatever
you
have
to
talk
about
wheat
and
that's
the
way
it
works.
I'm.
C
So
again,
it's
that
teamwork
makes
the
dreamwork,
but
my
student
said
MIT
RG
she's,
the
one
that
first
said
when
we're
talking
about
different
ways
of
solving
problems.
She
said
well,
teamwork
makes
the
dream,
work
and
so
I
said:
well,
that's
a
statement
that
we
all
need
to
think
about
in
whom
teamwork
makes
the
dream
work,
and
your
presence
here
is
a
testimony
to
that
fact
that
it's
putting
a
team
together
that
stone
the
work.
That's
making
this
happen
here
on
the
name.
C
C
C
C
C
It's
called
the
pursuit
of
possibilities,
pursuit
of
possibilities,
imagining
a
life
based
on
the
power
of
love
where
all
the
children
are
ours
and
we
hold
their
trust.
So
we
bring
out
the
best
in
us
free
me
who
can
freely
me?
I
know
I'm
free.
I
know
I'm
free
because
I
can
dream
a
world
where
all
can
be
free
to
be
complete
system
in
a
complete
system
sharing
in
the
Commonwealth
somewhere
out.
C
There
are
others
who
want
to
live
in
a
sharing
community
fries
inside
of
me,
part
of
my
heredity
I
can
take
my
life
where
I
want
to
be
I
can
keep
pushing
like
my
ancestors
did
for
me.
I
am
a
link
in
the
chain
of
change
working
for
all
to
be
free
when
the
moon
is
full.
It
has
its
impact
on
me
like
it.
Does
the
water
in
the
seas
as
the
tides
reached
a
height
I,
keep
my
goals
in
sight
to
live
in
a
world
where
I
can
share
my
leg.
C
Free
is
inside
of
me,
so
I
can
imagine
where
to
take
my
life.
The
beauty
of
the
universe
is
instilled
in
me.
I
can
be
to
change.
I
want
to
see
be
the
present
to
gift
of
creation.
It
still
at
me,
so
I
can
live
in
harmony
with
my
will
community
fries
inside
of
me,
so
I
can
see
the
greatness
of
the
power
of
lovingly
watching
the
Rising
Sun,
providing
warmth
and
fulfillment
for
everyone.
