From YouTube: BPS Educator of the Year Reception
Description
At the Bruce C. Bolling Building in Roxbury, Mayor Walsh, Superintendent Dr. Tommy Chang, and representatives from the Boston Teachers Union honor Boston's top educators.
A
B
B
This
is
the
second
year
under
Mayor
Walsh's
leadership
that
we
have
revived
educator
of
the
year.
It
was
something
that
actually
took
place
with
another
amazing
mastermind
Martha
Pierce,
but
took
a
pause
for
several
years
and
we
inherited
it
in
our
department
and
we're
thrilled
to
do
so
and
have
figured
out
how
to
make
sure
that
we
involve
all
of
our
communities
in
making
this
decision,
and
so
it's
been
an
honor
to
host
this
program
for
the
past
two
years
and
we
look
forward
to
next
year
just
a
little
bit
of
black
background.
B
We
had
225
non
nominations
this
year,
Hannah
I,
don't
know
255
I,
don't
know
how
many
we
had
last
year,
199
so
next
year
we're
shooting
for
350
closer
to
400.
We
have
an
amazing
panel
of
folks
who
read
all
of
the
applications
and
scream
people
who
you
work
with
people
who
are
represented
by
students.
Our
corporate
partners
are
involved
in
this
I.
Think
the
LEGO
Education
Red
Sox
C
plan
phenomenal
moms.
The
Celtics
and
building
impact
all
participated
in
screening.
Your
nominations.
We
got
awesome
videos.
B
We
had
great
testimonials
from
your
students
from
your
colleagues
from
your
school
leaders,
and
so
it
is
really
a
privilege
to
share
the
room
with
you
and
we
want
you
to
know
how
much
we
appreciate
and
value
your
contributions
to
the
school
system.
I
have
the
pleasure
of
introducing
mayor
Walsh
who's,
going
to
say
a
few
words
and
he's
on
a
tight
schedule
tonight.
B
There
were
often
times
when
we
actually
couldn't
get
him
out
of
a
classroom
because
he
was
so
engaged
in
the
instruction,
the
learning
and
the
actual
just
relationship
building
that
was
taking
place
between
yourselves
and
your
students
and
so
really
know
that
you
have
a
mayor
who
honors
and
really
respects
the
hard
hard
work
that
all
of
you
do
every
day.
So
with
that
I'm
going
to.
Let
me
welsh
come
up
and
say
a
few
words.
C
Thank
You,
Kiba
and
I
want
to
just
first
congratulate
all
of
you
all
the
teachers
here,
I'm
excited
to
be
here.
Makeba
said
when
we
go
to
schools.
My
favorite
part
of
going
going
to
going
is
the
mayor
of
Boston
is
visiting
schools
and
when
I
see
the
little
kids
they
like,
you
remember
me
and
I'm
like
yeah
and
then
I
see
them
in
summertime.
Remember
me:
oh
yeah
I
saw
you
in
school
yeah
what
school,
but
it's
awesome
and
it's
it's
so
much
fun.
Honestly
and
I
just
want
to
congratulate
all
of
you.
C
You
are
when
I
say
this
I
think
a
lot
about
as
mayor.
What's
the
most
of
who's,
the
most
important
people
in
working
for
government
and
oftentimes,
you
think
it's
it's
the
police,
the
police
officer,
because
they
keeping
the
city
safe
and
it's
the
fight
upon
EMS,
because
when
they
call
911
somebody
gets
there
and
other
times
it's
the
journalist,
it's
a
it's
a
public
works
because
they
keep
the
streets
moving
forward.
It's
a
transportation
worker
but
I
want
to
say
at
the
core
of.
What's
most
important
is
education.
C
C
Really
it
comes
back
to
making
sure
they
have
a
strong
foundation
in
kindergarten
in
first
grade
in
second
grade
making
sure
that
they're
able
to
move
through
the
system
make
sure
they
get
into
a
high
school
make
sure
they
get
great
guidance
in
great
education
in
high
school
and
then
when
they
move
on
to
college
or
Korea,
it's
important
for
us
to
move
forward.
So
all
this
others
money
that
we're
spending
in
social
programming
and
in
income,
inequality
and
poverty.
It's
important.
We
have
to
do
that,
but
there's
a
way
to
rid
it
all.
C
In
the
way
we've
read
it
all
really
is
by
education,
and
it's
not
gonna
be
mean.
It's
gonna,
be
a
lot
of
the
teachers
in
this
room.
So
I
just
want
to
thank
you,
for
you
do
every
single
day.
I
know
it's
not
always
easy.
I
know
that
you
have
some
challenges.
You
have
challenges
with
the
young
people.
You
teach
you
have
challenges
with
with,
with
with
some
of
the
parents
and
the
families
that
don't
have
strong
families.
You
have
challenges
sometimes
with
the
school
administration
and
with
the
mayor's
office.
C
But
your
challenge
with
the
union
account.
We
have
challenged
everyone,
but
I,
just
wanna
lead
from
the
bottom
of
my.
How
I
want
to
congratulate
all
the
teachers
being
recognized
today
and
all
the
other
teachers
in
the
system.
I
know
that
the
you
probably
feel
this
is
a
lot
of
other
teachers
that
could
be
recognized
here
today
for
great
work.
They
have
done
as
well
in
the
district,
so
I
just
want
to
say.
C
Thank
you
and
I
know
that
now
you
a
lot
of
many
of
you,
were
recognized
at
the
Boston
Celtics
game
on
April
11th,
and
you
thought
that
was
the
highlight.
But
today
is
really
the
highlight
yeah
we're
here
at
the
ball
in
building
so
I
again,
I
just
want
to
I
want
to
say
thank
you
because,
as
I
mentioned,
the
way
out
of
out
of
what
we're
having
in
America
right
now
is
to
education.
C
That's
the
way
out,
I
mean
if
the
young
person
can
read
and
write
and
can
graduate
high
school
and
get
a
kid
get
an
opportunity
to
be
successful.
That
that's
the
way
out
of
all
the
issues
that
social
issues
that
are
out
there
and
we
have
to
do.
We
have
to
continue
to
push
to
make
sure
that
that
happens
across
the
board
and
again,
thank
you
for
your
support.
C
This
weekend
we
have
the
US
Conference
of
Mayors
coming
into
Boston,
and
we
have
both
300
minutes
around
the
United
States
of
America
and
they're
gonna
come
here.
I'm
gonna
highlight
all
the
different
things
in
our
city
that
we're
doing
and
we're
gonna
have
different
conversations
about
about
the
environment
and
what's
happening
in
America,
what's
not
happening
in
America
we're
gonna,
be
talking
about
the
addiction
opioid
crisis
and
and
how
we
can
get
battle
with
that
issue.
We're
gonna
be
talking
about
transportation
infrastructure
around
the
United
States
of
America.
C
They
might
be
going
to
some
of
your
schools,
but
I
want
to
just
say
if
they
come
in
just
tell
them.
What's
happening
in
Boston
because
no
matter
even
some
of
the
concerns
we
have
with
with
people
saying
underfunding
and
having
problems,
some
of
these
other
districts
are
far
worse
than
ours.
They
have
very
bad
situations
what's
going
on
and
they
want
to
steal
best
practices,
so
anything
that
you're
doing.
C
If
you
get
an
opportunity,
please
talk
to
them,
go
up
to
them
and
talk
to
them,
and
you
never
know
what
we
could
learn
from
what's
happening
in
other
cities,
but
also
more
important.
They're
gonna
learn
from
you.
So
again,
congratulations
to
all
the
teachers
to
the
family
members
here,
thank
you
for
supporting
those
the
great
teachers
in
this
room
because
I
know
sometimes
it's
at
least
I
know
for
me.
C
I
take
my
job
home
and,
and
sometimes
it's
a
nice
day-
and
we
have
you
know
great
day,
conversation
and
sometimes
difficult
day,
because
challenges
and
things
happen
and-
and
you
want
to
be
able
to
tough
on
some
things
off
people.
So
thank
you
to
the
families
and
friends
that
are
here
supporting
these
great
teachers.
It's
an
honor
to
have
you
here
with
us
today.
I
know
we're
gonna,
give
us
something
in
a
minute.
I
now
have
an
honor
to
introduce
to
you.
C
The
president,
who's
coming
Shami
coming
up
jessica
is
next,
and
then
we
have
school
commune
members.
Yet
we
have
Michael
canto
the
chair
of
school
committee.
Thank
you
Michael,
for
being
here
with
us.
We
have
Michael
O'neill
who's,
just
the
past,
I
think
the
longest
serving
chair
of
the
School
Committee
here
with
us.
Thank
you,
Michael
Alex,
all
of
us
here
who
is
on
the
board
as
well
for
almost
three
or
four
years
now
I
want
to
thank
you.
I
want
to
thank
superintendent,
Tommy
Chang
for
his
great
work.
C
Robby
can
savile
chief
of
staff
is
here
Tommy,
Welch
and
a
whole
bunch
of
other
folks
that
are
here
from
the
school
department.
Thank
you
and
I
think
Makeba
already
for
her
great
work.
Thank
you
as
well.
This
has
to
be
a
partnership.
We
have
to
knock
down
the
lines
we
have
to
draw
them.
If
this,
if
there's
disagreements
and
there's
problems
out
there,
we
have
to
knock
those
down
because
at
the
end
of
the
day,
it's
not
about
me.
It's
not
about
Tommy
Chang,
so
out
of
Oakland
School
Committee,
it's
not
about
you!
D
So
good
evening,
I
am
really
thrilled
to
be
here
because
the
VGO
to
a
lot
of
events
throughout
the
year
and
I
have
to
say
you
know
outside
of
our
Beach
you
under
your
party.
Of
course,
this
is
one
of
my
favorite
two
events,
the
other
one
being
the
valedictorians
luncheon
and
and
this
one
and
the
reason.
Why
is
because
it's
our
opportunity
to
celebrate
the
best
of
who
we
are
as
Boston
Public
Schools
and
the
Boston
teachers
union?
It's
the
best
of
our
students.
D
The
stories
if
you
haven't
read
about
them,
I
encourage
you
to
do
so.
It's
just
incredible
stories
of
overcoming
adversity
to
become
valedictorians
and
our
Boston
public
schools,
high
schools
and
always
as
part
of
their
message.
They
thanked
their
teachers
and
so
their
journey
very
much
goes
hand
in
hand
with
your
journey
and
any
opportunity
that
we
have
to
be
able
to
celebrate.
D
The
amazing
work
that
all
of
our
educators
do
in
Boston,
Public
Schools
is
a
wonderful
occasion,
and
so
I
just
want
to
congratulate
you
all
and
all
of
the
255
nominees
and
I
know
that
all
of
our
teachers
really
go
above
and
beyond
every
single
day
and
in
fact
often
times
people
ask
me.
Well
you
know,
how
is
it
going
you
know
being
president
or
you
know,
what
do
you
like
about
your
job
and
I'll
say
the
one
thing
that
keeps
me
motivated
and
keep
going
and
to
make
me
that
makes
me
most
proud
about.
D
My
job
is
I
can,
without
a
doubt,
say.
I
am
so
proud
to
represent
the
best
educators
in
this
nation
and
I
would
dare
to
say
in
in
the
world,
because
I've
had
the
opportunity
to
go
to
other
cities
and
districts,
and
you
know
they
do
lovely
work
too,
but
when
I
go
visit,
our
schools
and
I
see
what
our
educators
are
doing.
D
This
is
something
you
can
only
do
for
a
little
while,
but
this
really
can
be
something
you
can
continue
to
do
and
love
to
do
as
a
career.
So,
thank
you
guys
so
much
and
thank
you
all
to
your
families
to
support
you
and
and
and
I
know
that
sometimes,
unless
you
have
a
very
close
family
member
who's,
a
teacher
you
don't
understand,
you
know
why
do
they
just
like
turn
off
a
Friday
night
and
are
incapacitated?
And
you
know
you
know,
why
is
it
that
you
know
like
you
know?
D
A
Well,
hey
folks,
how
are
you
I'm,
Michael
Akana
on
the
chair
of
the
School
Committee
I'm,
very
happy
to
be
here
with
you
today
and
happy
to
be
joined
by
my
colleagues
as
the
mayor,
and
she
mentioned
earlier:
Alex,
Oliver
Davila
and
mr.
Michael
O'neill
our
media
past
chair
and
also
a
member
of
the
selection
committee.
A
I
want
to
start
off
by
noting
I
will
respectfully
disagree
with
the
mayor
about
you
know
today's
event:
I've
never
been
on
the
parquet
at
the
garden
and
I
gotta
say
that
a
those
pictures
from
April
11
look
pretty
awesome.
So
I
want
to
congratulate
you
on
that.
That
was
a
heck
of
an
event
and
I
hope
we
can
do
that
every
year,
but
in
any
case,
it's
really
great
to
see
so
many
people
out
here
to
support
our
educators
of
the
year
today.
A
In
addition
to
all
the
folks
from
central
office
and
the
committee
and
the
mayor's
office
I've
noticed
a
number
of
headmasters,
the
instructional
superintendent
sprinkled
throughout
the
room.
So
you
know
we're
really
appreciative
of
having
you
out
here
and
helping
us
support
in
addition
to
all
the
family,
members,
colleagues
and
everyone
else,
that's
come
out.
You
know
this
is
truly
a
bps
family
and
we
have
so
many
great
educators.
A
It's
occurred
from
the
speakers
before
me
that
are
sprinkled
throughout
this
system,
and
you
know
I
like
to
think
that
this
event
recognises
only
a
small
select
few
for
your
extraordinary
accomplishments.
But
you
know
we
really
do
celebrate
the
accomplishments
of
all
the
teachers
across
the
district,
and
so
you
know
I,
look
at
this
event
as
something
that
celebrates
not
only
your
individual
accomplishments,
but
really
the
great
work
that
all
teachers
across
the
district
and
so
I
applaud
you
for
that.
I
want
to
make
sure
that
we
just
note
a
couple
other
items.
As
mr.
A
O'neill
pointed
out
to
my
colleagues
and
I
working
on
the
selection
committee,
we
had
an
extraordinary
amount
of
nominees
this
year
and
we
had
a
number
of
student
selections,
especially
and
the
student
nominations
were
really
great.
You
know
the
I
think
we
heard
earlier
that
we
had
a
number
of
multimedia
presentations
and
just
you
know
really
hearing
specifically
how
you
make
a
difference
in
individual
students
lives,
support
them,
give
them
the
guidance
that
maybe
they
can't
always
get
at
home
or
elsewhere.
A
That
really
makes
such
a
difference
to
us,
and
we
know
how
much
of
a
difference
it
makes
to
each
one
of
them
and
it
really
shines
through
and
speaks
to
the
work
that
we
do
in
the
district
every
day,
and
so
that's
hardening
for
my
colleagues
and
I,
as
well
as
I'm
sure
for
every
one
of
the
folks
in
this
room.
So
we
thank
you
so
much
for
that.
We're
really
pleased
to
be
here
with
all
of
you
to
celebrate
your
great
accomplishments.
A
Along
again
with
you
know,
your
proud
family
I
see
some
flowers
here,
I
see
some
future
bps
students
out
in
the
audience.
Perhaps
you
know
just
such
a
great
day
and
I
couldn't
be
happier
to
be
here
to
celebrate
it
with
you.
So
thank
you
again.
I'm
gonna
introduce
our
superintendent
dr.
Sami
Cheng,
who
will
make
a
few
other
remarks.
E
Good
evening,
it's
great
to
see
everyone
teaching
is
the
most
important
occupation.
You
are
shaping
the
minds
of
the
future
scholars
and
innovators,
civic
leaders
of
tomorrow
and
our
young
people
in
this
school
district
right
now
will
be
leading
this
city
and
they
will
be
leading
you
this
country
and
as
I
like
to
joke,
they
will
take
care
of
us
when
we
can't
take
care
of
ourselves.
E
E
You
all
work
in
a
teach,
a
variety
of
different
subjects
and
ages.
We
have
stem
teachers,
we
have
manage
teachers
with
visual
arts
teachers
or
PE
teachers.
We
have
ESL
teachers,
we
have
history,
teachers,
we
have
early
childhood
teachers,
we
have
high
school
teachers
and,
interestingly,
each
one
of
the
eight
educator
of
the
Year
winners
teaches
in
a
different
Boston
neighborhood.
So
you
literally
are
representing
every
corner
of
the
city,
I'm,
not
quite
sure.
E
And
1
for
23,
but
it's
just
obviously
just
a
lot
incredible
experience
in
this
room.
I
myself
am
extremely
grateful
for
what
you
do
each
and
every
day
teaching
is
a
tough.
It
is
a
hard
job,
but
you
bring
it
every
single
day
and
think,
as
Jessica
said,
you
can't
help
yourselves.
You
want
to
talk
about
teaching.
You
want
to
talk
about
school
in
the
evenings
weekends
during
the
summers,
because
it's
in
your
heart,
it's
in
your
soul,
and
it's
that's
just
the
way
it
is
so
if
you
are
married
to
an
educator.
Thank
you.
E
So
each
of
you
will
be
getting
this,
and
each
of
you
will
also
be
getting
a
goody
bag.
Every
pack
is
a
little
bit
different,
but
what
we
can
guarantee
to
you,
you
will
be
immensely
impressed
with
what's
inside
I
wish.
I
could
take
one
of
those
bags
with
me.
I
could
use
it
this
weekend,
but
you
enjoy
yourselves
and
I
wanna.
Thank
you
again.
