From YouTube: BPS After School Learning & Beyond
Description
Mayor Walsh, Superintendent Tommy Chang, and other Boston School Committee members discuss the important relationship between summer learning and closing the achievement gap during the Boston Public Schools Summer Learning and Beyond Press Event at the Harvard-Kent School in Charlestown.
Research shows that a major contributing factor to the achievement gap is unequal access to summer learning opportunities. Boston After School & Beyond and Boston Public Schools are working together to implement more than 1,500 new program slots available to underserved children across the city.
A
All
right,
however,
Kent
students
how
you
guys
doing
this
mall
in
it
thanks
for
coming
out
this
morning,
I
really
appreciate
you
being
here.
You
helping
me
out
all
right
so
good
morning.
Everyone
and
thank
you
to
everyone
for
attending
our
summer
learning
launch
this
morning.
We're
really
excited
and
proud
to
host
you
all
here
at
the
Harvard
Kennedy
fifth
quarter
of
learning
and
opportunity.
A
Some
is
a
really
important
time
for
our
students.
Here
at
the
Harvard
Kent.
We
try
to
connect
every
single
one
of
our
families
with
an
opportunity
that
will
keep
our
students
focused
and
engaged
and
also
provide
them
with
opportunities
to
learn
in
deeper
relationship
with
their
peers.
These
skills
serve
students
well
heading
into
the
next
school
year.
Here
at
the
Harvard
Kent,
we
have
a
lot
of
great
opportunities
available
for
our
students.
This
summer,
our
community
partner,
courageous
sailing
I,
see
Dave
DeLorenzo
back.
A
Students
will
experience
new
and
exciting
places
for
learning
the
Navy,
our
for
sailing
the
community
center,
the
beach,
the
Bunker
Hill
pool,
and
all
this
is
made
possible
by
the
Boston
Public
Schools
Boston
after
screw
and
beyond,
and
our
wonderful
community
partners.
So
for
any
families
who
haven't
set
up
their
children
with
things
to
do
for
the
summer,
I
encourage
them
to
check
in
with
their
schools.
So
they
can
learn
about
other,
exciting
fun,
educational
opportunities
that
are
available
this
summer.
A
I
want
to
close
this
by
thanking
mayor,
Marty,
Walsh
and
superintendent
Tommy
Chang
for
the
continued
commitment
to
transforming
the
summer
into
a
fifth
quarter
of
learning.
It's
an
honor
for
the
Harvey
Kent
school
to
host
this
kickoff
today
and
we're
proud
to
follow
your
lead
in
establishing
new
partnerships
that
open
the
door
to
learning
for
all
students
in
the
summertime
and
with
that
I'd
like
to
introduce
our
mayor,
Marty
Walsh,.
A
B
You
very
much
mr.
Gallagher
and
I'm
it's
great
to
be
here
at
this
great
school
again.
I
want
to
thank
superintendent
Chang
as
well
for
his
great
work,
but,
most
importantly,
I
want
to
I
thank
all
of
you,
young
students
at
the
Harvey
Kent
elementary
school.
Thank
you
for
letting
us
be
here
today
all
right.
How
many
days
left
all
right,
I
wish
I
could
say
the
same
thing
but
anyway,
but
it's
great
to
be
here
the
exciting
time
of
the
year.
I
want
to
just
congratulate
mr.
B
Some
learning
community
from
making
the
short
summer
is
a
true
time
for
learning
the
summer
students
right
here,
as
was
mentioned
earlier,
we
part
of
creative
sailing,
but
they'll
also
be
at
the
Sports
and
Tennis
Club
in
Dorchester
they'll,
be
at
the
YMCA
in
these
blocks
and
they'll
be
at
other
students
around
the
city
where
we
had
other
opportunities
and
they'll
get
other
experiences.
As
the
summer
moves
on
these
students
will
have
fun
getting
to
know
the
city
getting
to
know
other
other
peers
of
theirs.
B
We're
also
excited
that
most
of
what
we're
calling
the
fifth
quarter's
you
see
on
the
turrets
reaches
research.
Research
shows
us
that
summer
learning
helps
develop,
math,
reading
skills
and
social-emotional
skills.
It
also
helps
students,
keep
this
skill
shop
and
hit
the
ground
running
their
keys
to
closing
opportunity
gaps
and
two
years
ago
we
set
an
ambitious
goal,
so
we
wanted
to
have
10,000
students
in
over
100
programs
by
by
2017.
B
We
reached
that
milestone
a
year
ahead
of
time.
Boston
is
certainly
one
of
the
city's
a
major
city
and
a
leader
in
summer
learning.
We
want
more
kids
in
Massachusetts.
Have
this
opportunity
as
well?
That's
why
I'm
strongly
supporting
the
legislation
that
would
expand.
Fifth
quarter,
the
fifth
quarter
model
to
statewide
the
entire
Boston
summer.
Learning
community
is
working
hard
to
make
these
programs
even
better
and
reach
more
students
and
more
of
our
neighborhoods
dr.
Cheng
I
want
to
thank
dr.
B
Chang
for
his
partnership
on
this
two
million
dollar
investment,
which
includes
funds
raised
by
Boston
after
school
and
beyond
to
our
community
partners.
I
want
to
say
thank
you
as
well
for
creating
these
life-changing
opportunities
and
for
all
who
are
helping.
Students
find
joy
and
learning
I
want
to
thank
you
and
you're,
making
it
fun
for
them.
So
I
want
to
thank
you
for
that,
as
well
into
any
family.
That's
watching!
Today,
it's
not
too
late
to
find
a
summer
program
for
your
child.
B
You
can
visit
partners,
bps
org
for
a
full
list
of
locations
together,
we're
giving
every
student
a
chance
to
thrive
all
year,
long
in
throughout
their
lives.
So
I'm
excited
about
that
now.
I
have
the
great
honor
of
introducing
to
you,
the
leader
of
our
Boston
Public
Schools,
somebody
who's,
doing
an
incredible
job,
working
every
single
day
to
make
sure
that
these
young
people
at
the
Harvey
Kent,
and
that
every
school
in
our
city
has
a
chance
to
be
successful
and
thrive
and
put
them
on
a
pathway
to
success
or
college
and
that
superintendent,
dr.
D
C
Supporters,
Thank
You
Boston
after
school
and
beyond
that
your
terminal
Neal
for
being
here,
Alex
Oliver
Davila,
one
of
our
school
committee
members.
Thank
you
for
being
here
today
we're
here
today
because
of
the
fifth
quarter,
and
the
fifth
quarter
is
an
opportunity
to
make
learning
fun.
The
summer
is
a
time
where
learning
continues.
Learning
does
not
end
in
just
10
days.
Learning
will
continue
through
the
summer,
but
what
happens
in
the
what
it
will
happen?
A
fifth
quarter
we're
going
to
make
learning
integration
of
academics
and
enrichment.
C
So
we
know
through
research,
as
the
mayor
said,
that
many
students
experience
learning
loss,
but
we
do
not
want
that
to
happen
in
the
city
of
Boston
and
want
to
thank
all
our
community
partners
such
as
Metta
movements
and
courageous
sailing,
both
of
who,
whom
are
here
and
other
organizations
like
Thompson,
Island,
Hill
reservations,
Zoo,
New,
England
for
all
being
willing
to
work
with
our
teachers.
Hand-In-Hand
planning
together
and
executing
together.
Learning
should
be
both
rigorous
and
relevant
and
I
like
to
say
learning
should
replicate
adult
life.
C
So
when
students
are
in
the
communities
learning
from
the
communities
and
doing
projects
that
will
actually
change
their
communities,
that's
when
rich
learning
occurs.
The
fifth
quarter
learning
is
a
strong
commitment
of
the
city
of
Boston
and
Boston
Public
Schools
to
to
invest
in
closing
opportunity
and
achievement
gaps.
So
the
so.
The
two
million
dollars
that
will
be
invested
into
the
fifth
quarter
will
change
young
people's
lives.
We
are
moving
away
from
the
traditional
summer
school
and
we're
moving
to
this
model
of
summer
learning,
so
I'm
so
excited
that
this
is
happening.
C
We're
going
to
expand
this
opportunity
to
more
kids,
I
want
to
quickly
just
share
one.
My
first
days
as
a
superintendent
I
came
to
this
very
school
and
I
walk
classrooms
in
the
morning
and
then,
in
the
afternoon,
put
on
a
light.
Preserve,
got
on
a
little
bow.
I,
don't
know
if
any
of
those
young
people
are
in
the
audience.
C
But
then
I
went
sailing
with
a
young
people
in
the
Boston
Harbor,
and
what
I
saw
with
my
own
eyes
was
that
the
students
were
growing
socially
emotionally,
as
well
as
getting
stronger
academically
and
Boston
is
truly
a
national
leader
in
this.
The
research
demonstrates
that
and
some
are
learning,
because
some
are
learning
it's
so
critical
to
student
achievement.
We
believe
this
is
the
worthwhile
investment
to
me.
So
I
want
to
thank
everyone
for
being
here
and
now.
I
have
the
honor
of
introducing
the
executive
director
of
Boston
after
school
and
beyond
Chris
Smith.
D
Thanks
dr.
Cheng
and
thanks
to
principal
Gallagher
for
hosting
us
today,
you
know
it
just
steps
from
the
Mystic
River,
the
Boston
Harbor
in
Boston's
in
the
country's
revolutionary
history.
In
principle,
Gallagher
is
a
model
of
a
school
leader,
who's
able
to
tap
those
resources
and
extend
learning
beyond
school.
I
also
want
to
thank
mayor,
Walsh
and
superintendent
Chang
for
their
leadership
on
this
issue,
they're
establishing
a
models
for
cities
not
only
across
the
Commonwealth
but
cities
across
this
country.
D
Your
willingness
to
innovate,
coupled
with
your
relentless
focus
on
the
results,
made
a
good
idea
better
and
is
helping
to
bring
it
to
scale.
I
also,
especially
want
to
thank
the
hundreds
of
teachers,
program,
directors
and
youth
workers
who
have
implemented
and
revised
this
model
for
seven
years
now,
it's
nobody's
day
job.
To
do
this,
they
had
to
come
together
across
organizational
boundaries
even
during
vacations.
During
the
summer
months
and
even
the
school
year,
they
took
risk
together.
They
tried
new
things.
D
They
absorb
a
lot
of
constructive
criticism
and
feedback
and
looked
at
even
more
data
and
they're.
The
reason
that
we're
here
today
I
also
want
to
thank
the
private
funders
who
are
making
this
happen
in
helping
the
bps
implement
the
fifth
quarter
at
scale
across
the
city,
including
the
EOS
foundation,
Wellington
Management,
Foundation,
Bar,
Foundation
and
Klarman
Family
Foundation,
and
to
the
funders.
D
D
How
learning
should
happen
for
kids,
not
as
a
product
to
be
consumed,
but
it's
a
process
that
involves
taking
a
leap
with
support,
getting
timely
feedback
on
your
strengths
and
what
you
need
to
improve
on
and
building
strong
connections
that
will
serve
you
not
just
during
the
summer
months,
but
for
a
lifetime,
and
so
for
us.
The
fifth
quarter
is
when
the
city
comes
alive,
is
a
classroom
for
thousands
of
kids.
D
It's
when
our
most
prized
natural
cultural
community
and
higher
education
institutions
open
their
arms
to
kids
from
every
part
of
the
city
in
every
neighborhood.
It's
also
where
knowledge
and
skill
see
come
together,
so
that
students
can
show
what
they
can
do
with
what
they've
learned.
And
finally,
it's
where
students
explore
new
interests,
make
new
friends
and
accomplish
things
they
never
thought
was
possible,
all
of
them,
giving
the
tools
to
approach
school
in
life
for
that
matter,
with
a
renewed
sense
of
purpose,
curiosity
and
confidence,
and
what
they're
able
to
do
so.
D
E
Thank
you
Chris
for
all
your
efforts
on
the
thank
you
to
the
superintendent,
the
mayor,
the
chair
for
being
here,
and
thank
you
principal
Gallagher,
for
letting
us
be
here
today
and
thank
you
to
all
the
young
people.
I'm
sure
all
our
talking
is
making
you
feel
like
it's
11
days,
but
this
is
really
important
stuff
and
you
guys
are
going
to
have
such
a
great
summer.
So
I
will
be
really
quick
on
my
comments.
So
today,
I
am
here
wearing
two
hats:
I
am
a
school
committee.
E
E
We
as
an
organization
have
a
focus
on
serving
English
language
learners
and
we
use
the
summer
to
really
empower
these
students,
many
of
whom
are
brand
new
to
our
country,
so
they
can
be
successful
in
the
coming
school
year
during
the
summer.
We
are
proud
to
partner
with
many
different
institutions
and
partners.
During
the
summer
we
partner
with
Simmons
College
to
run
our
middle
school
programs.
E
So
we
are
on-site
at
Simmons
and
very
grateful
for
that
beautiful
space,
our
middle
school
students
get
to
engage
in
project-based
academics
and
they
have
the
opportunity
to
participate
in
clubs
focus
in
science,
technology,
engineering
and
math.
These
clubs
are
a
great
way
to
really
immerse
our
students
in
thinking
like
engineers
and
to
develop
things
like
video
games
and
to
focus
on
robotics
and,
most
importantly,
the
program
really
allows
students
to
learn
to
develop
new
relationships
with
peers
with
adults
and
to
increase
their
confidence
as
they
go
into
the
next
school
year.
E
So
thank
you
for
us,
as
Chris
always
has
said,
since
I've
known
him,
our
city
is
really
a
classroom,
and
so
we
really
need
to
leverage
all
of
the
all
of
the
amazing
resources
that
we
have
in
the
city.
College
campuses
open
their
doors
to
allow
our
students
to
experience
what
is
possible
beyond
high
school,
and
it
allows
our
students
to
learn
to
explore
to
investigate
and
reflect
which
are
all
valuable
experiences
for
college
and
career
success.
E
Sociedad
latina
has
been
part
of
this
wonderful
endeavor
since
2010
and
we're
proud
to
be
a
leader
in
this
effort
to
serve
more
students
and
to
close
achievement
and
opportunity
gaps.
As
a
member
of
the
school
committee
I'm
proud
of
our
efforts
to
bring
together
adults,
teachers,
community
educators,
funders
nonprofits
to
provide
life-changing
experiences
for
our
students,
we
look
forward
to
empowering
more
young
leaders
this
summer,
and
so
now,
I
would
like
to
ask
the
principal
to
come
up
and
give
some
closing
remarks.
Thank
you.
A
Before
we
move
on
to
a
couple
activities,
I
just
want
to
recognize
two
harvard
kent
teachers-
mr.
free
in
this
fashion,
le
and
thank
you
for
bringing
your
students
out
here
this
morning,
not
only
to
the
best
teachers
we
have
here
in
our
school,
but
also
to
the
best
teachers
in
the
city.
One
thing:
if
you've
ever
been
to
visit
the
harvard
kent
students
never
ever
have
to
sit
this
long
still
so
I
appreciate
you
guys
being
patient
with
us
this
morning.
Thank
you
for
coming
out
this
morning.
I
know
miss
Batchelor
innisfree.
A
A
We
have
some
fourth
and
fifth
grade
students
who
have
been
a
part
of
the
courageous
swim
sail
science
program
over
the
last
few
years
and
they're
going
to
be
over
in
the
schoolyard
working
on
a
science
experiment
that
they
usually
do
during
the
summer
and
they
hit
a
out
with.
If
you
want
to
get
involved
in
that
and
in
the
meantime
over
here
on
this
side
of
the
court,
we
have.
D
A
Movements
is
going
to
be
doing
some
I
believe
some
salsa
dancing
when
everyone
I
know
you've
been
sitting
down
for
a
while
and
I
know
the
lot
of
energy
they'd
love
to
have
some
of
the
adults
come
up
and
join
them
to
do
a
little
bit
of
a
sauce
of
some
salsa
dancing.
So
thanks
forever
for
coming
out
and
please
join
us
for
some
of
these
activities
all
right.
Thank
you.
