From YouTube: BPS Valedictorian Lunch 2017
Description
At the Boston Harbor Hotel in the Seaport, Mayor Walsh and the Superintendent of Boston Public Schools, Tommy Chang, congratulate the 37 valedictorians from across the city on their stellar accomplishment.
A
Good
afternoon,
ladies
and
gentlemen,
so
glad
to
see
you
I'm
Callie,
Crossley,
host
and
commentator
for
WGBH
radio
and
TV
last
year,
I
told
Michael
O'neill
how
to
remember
that
God
bless
Harvard.
Now
you
won't
forget
this.
Welcome
to
the
19th
annual
Boston
Public
Schools
valack,
torian's,
luncheon
and
I'm.
A
I'm
delighted
to
be
here
today
with
Mayor
Walsh,
the
Boston
School
Committee
and
superintendent
Tommy
Chang,
as
we
honor
the
top
graduates
of
the
class
of
2017,
and
they
are
the
top
graduates.
I
want
to
thank
the
Boston
Harbor
hotel
for
hosting
the
event
today
and
special
thanks
to
presenting
sponsors,
the
Boston
foundation,
Eastern
Bank,
the
Shaw
foundation
and
Stewart
healthcare.
You
can
find
a
complete
list
of
the
generous
sponsors
in
your
program
book,
but
let's
please
let
it
be
known
that
everybody
thanks
you
for
your
support.
A
Now,
today
we
are
celebrating
an
elite
group
of
young
people
who
have
worked
incredibly
hard
to
reach
the
top
of
the
class.
It's
an
amazing
accomplishment,
but
as
you've
heard,
some
of
them
say
they
would
all
tell
you
they
couldn't
have
achieved
their
success
alone.
They
have
been
supported
by
caring
adults,
many
of
whom
are
here
with
us
today.
So
first
I'd
like
to
ask
all
the
parents
and
family
members
of
our
valedictorians
to
please
stand
for
a
round
of
applause.
A
A
Thank
you
for
all
of
your
hard
work
on
behalf
of
these
students
and
all
the
young
people
in
the
Boston
Public
Schools.
Now
I'd
like
to
invite
to
the
podium,
a
man
who
has
made
public
education
a
top
priority
in
the
city
of
Boston.
He
wants
to
build
and
to
help
other
young
kids
build
better
lives
from
themselves
in
this
city.
Please
welcome
mayor
Marty,
Walsh.
B
Thank
you
very
much
Kelly
and
thank
you
for
always
doing
a
great
job
here
and
seeing
this
great
event,
I
want
to
thank
superintendent
Chang
as
well
and
Channel
Mike
O'neill
from
the
Boston
Public
Schools
and
the
School
Committee
for
their
great
work.
So
thank
you
and
all
the
school
committee
members
that
are
here.
Thank
you.
Thank
you
very
much
as
well.
I
also
wanted
to
do
Richard
stop
men,
who
is
the
outgoing
president
of
BTU
I,
want
to
just
recognize
what
which
stand-up.
B
And
I
want
to
thank
Richard
for
his
many
years
of
dedication
as
a
teacher
and
then
as
a
union
official
and
then
as
the
union
president
of
Boston
Teachers
Union
at
the
end
of
the
day.
It's
all
we
all
want
to
do
is
make
sure
that
these
our
students
in
our
school
after
new
6,000
57,000
kids
get
the
best
education
they
possibly
can.
So
we
are
partnering
that
so
Richard.
Thank
you
very
much
for
that
great
work
that
you've
done.
I
also
want
to
thank
the
Boston
foundation,
Easton
Bank
steward
healthcare,
the
char
Family
Foundation.
B
All
the
sponsors
for
today.
Thank
you
for
your
great
work
as
well,
and
I
also
want
to
recognize
a
few
City
Council's
that
are
with
us
city,
councilor,
Tim
McCarthy
is
with
us.
Thank
you,
council,
Makati,
City,
Council,
salamat
Tina's
with
us
state
you
Sal,
City,
Council
I,
think
I
saw
city
council
Tito
Jackson
over
the
coin.
Thank
you,
City
Council,
Jackson
I,
don't
miss
any
other
councillors.
Well,
thank
you
city,
councilors,
for
being
with
us
today.
B
To
the
families,
teachers
and
mentors
I
want
to
say
thank
you
to
all
of
you.
These
students
did
the
work,
but
you
helped
create
a
support
system
that
allow
them
to
thrive
and
I
want
to
congratulate
all
of
the
students
here.
All
the
38
students
that
represent
Boston
we're
proud
of
you,
a
part
of
the
great
work
you
do
in
the
class
of
2017.
All
the
class
Victorians
on
I
know
we're
going
to
ask
you
again:
I'm
gonna
actually
stand
up
all
the
victors
valiant
stand
up,
so
we
can
recognize
you.
This
is
your
day.
B
These
great
students
hail
from
every
neighborhood,
not
city
from
child's
town,
to
Brighton
to
Roxbury.
They
hail
from
11
different
countries
from
Haiti
to
Kenya,
to
Korea
and
that's
that's
exciting.
More
than
half
of
these
will
be
the
first
in
their
family
to
attend
college
and
certainly,
and
at
the
top
of
the
class.
No
less
so
I
want
to
congratulate
all
of
you.
You
represent
power.
You
represent
promise
of
urban
education
here
in
our
city
and
I.
Certainly
our
country,
all
the
students
here
you've
achieved
something.
B
C
B
Some
of
you
are
active
in
your
community.
Some
of
you
have
unique
challenges
of
growing
up
in
a
complex,
modern
world.
Many
of
you
who
came
to
this
country
from
other
places
you
weren't
used
to
the
American
style,
mountain
cultures,
and
certainly
your
parents
probably
still
aren't
the
fact
that
you
could
have
all
have
achieved
this
level
of
academic.
Excellent
with
all
this
going
on
in
your
life
and
what's
happening
is
remarkable.
I
want
to
congratulate
you
for
that.
B
B
Let
it
go,
don't
worry
about
it,
don't
let
anyone
tell
you
to
shy
away
from
corny
jokes
people
are
gonna,
love
them
trust
me,
and
even
if
you
get
one
laughs
for
the
room,
you've
you've
succeeded.
So
don't
worry
about
that,
but
just
really
enjoy
yourself.
Take
the
moment
in
enjoy
enjoy
this
week
enjoy
the
last
few
days.
B
You
know
when
I,
when
I
graduate
high
school,
my
mother
and
father
from
a
different
country
they're
from
Ireland,
and
they
could
help
me
with
my
maze,
my
schoolwork
up
to
probably
8th
grade
5,
maybe
in
school,
because
we
did
things
differently.
They
did.
They
did
math
differently
than
we
did
in
United
States
America.
They
did
English
differently
the
way
that
we
did
96
America
and
they
learn
differently
in
us.
But
it's
important
for
you
never
to
forget
where
you
came
from
you
know.
B
Many
of
you
in
this
room
are
going
to
go
on
to
do
great
things
in
your
life.
Some
of
you
might
go
on
to
become
researchers
at
dana-farber
and
you
might
find
the
cure
for
cancer.
The
cure
anta
could
be
sitting
in
your
brain
in
this
very
room
today.
Some
of
you
are
going
to
be
choreographers
and
you're,
going
to
go
on
stage
and
possibly
run
the
ballet
at
the
Cutler
and
Beyond
Broadway.
C
B
B
You
have
a
drive
inside
of
you,
take
that
drive
and
push
that
drive
forward,
because
some
of
the
work
that
you
can
do
to
help
us
and
some
of
the
work
that
you
can
do
to
change
the
future
of
our
city
in
our
country
is
important.
Some
of
you
might
be
climate
scientists.
You
might,
you
might
actually
work
to
help
us
reach
our
goal
of
being
carbon
neutral
by
2050.
B
Some
of
you
might
be
social
workers
working
with
us
to
end
homelessness,
we're
talking
about
ending
chronic
homelessness
today,
but
your
class
actually
could
talking
about
ending
homelessness
across
the
board.
Depending
on
what
you
want
to
do,
some
of
you
might
be
becomes
CEOs
of
a
company.
You
might
revolutionize
and
change
the
word
workplace
culture.
You
will
help
us
close.
Finally,
close
the
gender
gap
when
men
and
women
get
paid
equal,
that's
under
your
generation
will
happen.
B
So
all
the
valedictorians
congratulation
I
want
you
to
go
out
and
relax
and
enjoy
your
summer
and
trust
me
on
this
one,
because
next
year,
you're
going
to
be
off
to
college
and
someday,
many
of
you
will
be
leading
our
city.
I
want
to
end
by
just
thanking
all
the
parents
and
all
the
guardians
that
are
here
today.
You
should
be
proud
of
these
students
at
these
tables.
This.
These
students
that
are
in
our
room
today
are
the
best
and
brightest
of
the
Boston
Public
School
System.
B
D
Thank
You
Kelly.
We
deeply
appreciate
the
work
you
do
hosting
this
event.
You
have
a
multi-year
emcee.
So
thank
you
for
that
and
thank
you
for
reminding
me
earlier
when
you
mentioned
the
GBH,
that
this
is
the
one
time
of
year
this
Boston
College
Grad,
says
god
bless
Harvard.
So
how
was
that
mr.
me
of
my
one
corny
joke
right?
D
He
said
that's
enough
for
the
valedictorian
to
do
one.
So
you
know,
as
we
begin
our
high
school
graduation
season,
which
on
is
all
of
our
graduates.
It
always
makes
sense
to
start
this
season
with
the
first
event,
which
is
truly
one
of
our
favorite
events
of
the
year,
the
always
inspiring
Boston
Public
Schools
valedictorian
luncheon.
On
behalf
of
my
fellow
members
of
the
School
Committee,
which
delighted
to
be
here
with
Mia
Walsh
and
the
other
elected
officials.
The
mayor
introduced
mr.
D
Mia
your
dedication,
your
support,
your
encouragement
for
the
students
of
Boston
and
the
Boston
Public
Schools
has
been
most
helpful
since
even
before
you
took
office
and
it's
extended
every
single
day
sense
with
your
help
will
work
as
hard
as
we
can
to
keep
improving
the
blocks
of
public
schools.
So
all
57,000
students
have
incredible
educational
opportunities,
as
represented
by
our
shining
stars
here
today.
So
it's
anonymous
that
mr.
mayor
to
work
so
closely
with
you
and
thank
you
for
your
support
of
our
schools
and
our
students.
D
D
D
And
from
way
back
in
time,
mr.
joy
Nucci
another
fellow
school
to
many
members,
so
welcome
I'd,
also
like
to
thank
and
recognize
our
superintendent,
dr.
Tommy
Chang
and
his
two
years
in
Boston.
Dr.
Chang
has
tool
truly
douve
all
in
he
and
his
team
have
developed
the
strategic
implementation
plan
to
take
the
school
committee's
goals
and
put
them
into
action
and
a
well
on
their
way
to
show
and
concrete
results
for
those
efforts.
D
His
focus
our
conversations
and
action
on
equity
and
opportunity
for
all,
most
especially
to
the
cultural
we
and
the
excellence
for
all
initiatives,
as
well
as
working
with
the
mayor's
office
and
expanding
the
opportunity
for
more
loss
of
public
school
students
to
be
prepared
for
and
succeed
at
the
exam
school
initiative.
He's
also
become
a
homeowner
in
was
in
deal
and
the
other
day.
I
heard
him
belly
aching
about
the
Red,
Sox
home
run
protection,
so
I
guess
he's
now.
Truly
one
of
us
welcome.
We
are
all
in
dr.
D
Chang
I'd,
also
like
to
as
the
Mia
did.
I
want
to
recognize
the
president
of
Boston
Teachers
Union
and
fellow
Boston
Public
Schools
graduate
mr.
Richard
Steadman
was
the
mayor
said
his
retiring
school
as
well
as
Jessica
tang
assumed
to
be
present
to
be
to
you
so
Thank
You
mr.
Stegman,
for
your
partnership
for
your
dedication
to
our
youth
and
our
teachers
and
I
joint
work
in
improving
the
district.
D
And
miss
Tang.
We
look
forward
to
continuing
that
work
with
you
as
well.
Additionally,
I'd
also
like
to
thank
Elizabeth
Sullivan,
the
executive
secretary
of
the
School
Committee,
who
puts
this
event
together
every
year.
It's
a
little
bit
like
putting
together
a
wedding
right
with
the
families
from
the
valedictorians
and
so
on,
and
so
forth.
Liz
says
that
every
year,
I'm
not
sure
where
she
is
in
the
crowd.
But
I
do
want
to
thank
her
for
her
hydro
exercise
idea:
Thank
You,
Liz,
Sullivan,.
D
And
behalf
of
the
entire
community,
we
want
to
extend
our
congratulations
not
only
to
the
valedictorians
we
celebrate,
but,
as
the
mayor
said,
the
families,
the
Headmaster's,
the
teachers
and
the
staff
who
support
you
every
step
of
the
way.
Just
like
the
team
you
valedictorians
have
around
you
to
get
you
to
where
you
are
today.
So
too
does
the
district
had
many
pitching
in
to
help
our
overall
work.
D
The
mere
mention
abut
I
have
to
mention
again
for
partners
with
us
in
this
effort
who
are
major
sponsors
for
this
event
because
of
a
no
taxpayer
dollars
being
used
today.
This
is
responses
who
help
us
out
and
they
additionally
support
the
city
of
Watson
scholarship
fund.
So
those
major
sponsors
of
the
Boston
foundation,
who
have
represented
today
by
Elizabeth
Pauli
Thank
You
Elizabeth
for
joining
us
Stuart
Healthcare,
the
Shar
Family
Foundation,
represented
today
by
Jill
Shaw.
D
We
should
show
a
suitabie
here
somewhere
and
eastern
bank,
represented
today
by
a
number
of
their
executives,
including
the
president
Quincy
Miller
Thank,
You
Quincy,
for
joining
us
and
a
number
of
their
executives
who
have
lost
some
public
school
graduates.
As
a
matter
fact
was
delighted
to
hear
so.
Thank
you
for
Elizabeth
and
Jill
in
Quincy
and
others
for
joining
us
today
and
for
your
support.
D
D
So
hopefully,
once
we
test
and
improve
this
hub-and-spoke
method,
it's
something
that
we're
going
to
be
able
to
expand
across
the
city.
So
thank
you
for
that
work.
I
also
have
to
quickly.
Thank
you.
I
also
have
to
quickly
mention
eastern
bank.
You
can't
live
in
this
city
and
see
the
advertisements
going
on
right
now
about
this
slogan.
Join
us
for
good.
Well,
this
is
a
company
that
lives
those
values
every
day
in
all
that
they
do
an
interested
in
the
afar
nation,
headed
by
Laura.
D
Laura
Herzog
who's
also
with
us
today
gives
away
many
millions
per
year,
but
each
year
they
pick
one
topic
to
give
1
million
dollars
to,
and
it's
fitting
that
this
year
that
focus
on
immigration
and
immigration
rights.
So
it's
fitting
that
they're
doing
that
as
we're
an
event.
That's
auditing,
a
group
of
students,
almost
40%
of
whom,
as
the
mayor
said,
who
were
not
born
in
the
US
and
61%
of
whom
will
be
the
first
and
if
they
only
go
into
college.
So
thank
you
for
Easton
for
that.
D
Unfortunately,
it's
the
only
thing
I
have
in
common
with
those
15
grads,
because
well
like
the
mayor,
I
wasn't
a
valedictorian.
I
was
kind
of
middle
to
class.
I
actually
look
over
and
see
my
former
headmaster
there
and
he's
probably
still
a
little
surprised
that
I
actually
got
the
diploma
at
bps,
but
I'm
very
proud
to
have
graduated
but
I'm
delighted
to
be
with
our
star
students
here
today.
D
But
like
me,
all
the
valedictorians
had
one
caring
adult
in
your
life,
supporting
you,
the
parents,
the
siblings,
the
guidance
counsel
to
teach
of
the
mentor,
the
coach,
someone
who
believed
in
you
and
that's
so
important.
Many
of
those
people
who
care
for
you
and
supported
you
and
whom
you
looked
for
as
a
role
model
in
this
room.
So
valedictorians.
Will
you
join
me
in
thanking
them
for
what
they
did
for
you?
I.
D
Mentioned
that
I'm,
a
second-generation
American
but
I
also
have
to
mention
a
significant
group
of
our
students,
represented
by
40%
of
our
valedictorian,
those
who
are
new
to
this
country
and
immigrated
here
directly,
so
many
of
whom
also
did
not
speak
English
as
the
primary
language
in
their
home.
Like
our
mayor,
you
heard
him
say,
he's
a
first-generation
American
and
he
offered
her
Gillick.
Our
Irish
spoken
in
his
own
growing
up
our
superintendent,
dr.
Tommy
Chang,
who
came
here
to
the
US
as
the
young
child
speaking
in
Taiwanese
and
Mandarin,
but
not
English.
D
My
fellow
school
committee
members,
dr.
yo-yo
and
Miss
Oliver
Davila,
who
immigrated
here
speaking
primary's
their
Spanish
farming
language,
my
wife,
who
came
to
the
u.s.
from
a
war-torn
majority,
Muslim
country
as
a
child
speaking
mainly
Arabic.
All
these
people
together
and
myself,
like
so
many
of
our
students
and
families,
and
we're
very
concerned
over
the
frankly
frightening
and
crazy
talk
that
comes
out
of
our
nation's
capital
and
beyond.
D
Yet
we
know,
as
the
mayor
said,
this
is
a
city
founded
and
built
by
people
new
to
this
country
and
together
all
of
us
a
resolute
that
we
stand
with
our
students.
In
doing
all,
we
can
so
that
every
single
student,
no
matter
their
background
or
their
status,
have
an
excellent
education
opportunity
in
the
Boston
Public
Schools.
D
Well,
beyond
our
exam
schools,
then
Neil
showed
again
his
incredible
commitment
to
this
city
and
school
system,
of
which
he's
also
a
proud
graduate
from
the
Boston
Technical
High
School,
now
known
as
the
John.
Do
Bryan
school
of
math
and
science
within
a
year
northeast
and
under
its
new
president,
dr.
Joseph,
a
Hume
began
the
bps
valedictorians
scholarship
program
at
North
Easton,
which
today
alone
will
benefit
a
number
of
our
valedictorians,
including
Maybelline
Perez,
Villa
Toro,
a
speaker
who
you
will
hear
from
shortly.
D
So
yesterday
was
the
100th
anniversary
of
the
birth
of
the
35th
President
of
the
United
States
Boston's
own
John,
Fitzgerald
Kennedy.
So
it's
appropriate
to
reference
his
words
and
I
quote.
As
we
express
our
gratitude,
we
must
never
forget
that
the
highest
appreciation
is
not
to
utter
words,
but
to
live
by
them.
Close
quote.
So
this
is
my
example
of
the
valedictorians
today
to
show
you
how
our
point
is
to
follow
that
advice
and
live
by
our
words
of
gratitude.
I.
D
D
So
this
is
the
platform
the
Boston
School
Committee
expended
steep
its
appreciation
to
Neal
Finnegan,
whereas
Neal
Finnegan
served
ten
years
as
chairman
of
the
Northeastern
University
Board
of
Trustees
and
continues
to
serve
as
chairman
emeritus
and
whereas
in
the
1990s
mr.
Finnegan
led
several
major
efforts
on
behalf
of
the
university
and
whereas,
as
a
Dorchester
native
second-generation
graduate
of
Boston
Technical
High
School
in
Northeastern,
University
alumnus
mr.
D
Finnegan
never
forgot
his
Boston
roots
and
was
instrumental
in
establishing
the
Boston
Public
High
School
scholarship,
the
Boston
Housing
Authority
scholarship,
the
northeastern
Boston
valedictorian
scholarship
and
the
northeastern
neighborhood
scholarship.
Therefore,
allowing
more
of
the
city's
young
people
to
realize
their
full
potential.
Therefore,
let
it
be
known
resolved
that
the
chairperson
and
members
of
the
school
community
city
of
Boston
join
with
the
mayor
of
Boston,
the
superintendent
schools
and
thanking
and
commending
mr.
Finnegan
for
his
tireless
efforts
to
expand
world-class
educational
opportunities
for
Boston
students.
Thank
you.
D
So,
thank
you
for
for
that
and
in
closing
I
just
want
to
ask,
as
the
mayor
said,
to
the
valedictorians
enjoy
this
day,
then
go
on
to
your
next
stage
in
life
and
keep
doing
what
got
you
to
this
spot
today.
Work
hard
study,
persevere,
but
then
don't
forget
to
come
back
to
boss
and
it
will
stay
in
Boston
if
you
were
at
one
of
our
great
colleges
and
be
like
Neal
Finnegan
Samiha,
mr.
D
Steadman
MS,
Robinson
myself
and
many
other
Boston
high
school
graduates
do
what
we
have
done
and
pass
it
along
to
the
next
generation.
Get
involved.
Give
back
teach
volunteer,
keep
making
this
the
best
city
in
this
wonderful
nation
that
shining
city
on
a
hill
enjoy
the
rest
of
your
day
and
congratulations
to
all.
A
E
E
I
want
to
thank
mayor
Walsh
for
your
tireless
leadership,
your
support
of
Boston
Public
Schools,
your
leadership,
your
steadfast
commitment
to
the
young
people
of
city
of
Boston
I
want
to
thank
Terminal,
Neal,
other
members
of
school
committee
for
being
here
today,
as
well
as
elected
officials
who
join
us
today.
I
know
the
mayor
introduced
some
of
the
liked
officials
I,
believe
councillors.
Oddly
Joy's
came
in
as
well
councilor
George.
Thank
you
for
being
here
today.
E
I
want
to
acknowledge
the
parents,
the
teachers,
the
coaches
and
mentors
who
have
guided
our
young
people
through
their
lives,
helping
shape
them
to
be
the
young
people.
They
are
today
to
all
the
individuals
who
have
been
beacons
of
light
for
young
people.
I
want
to
celebrate
you
today
as
well.
Thank
you.
E
E
So
I'm
going
to
bucket
my
comets
into
three
sections
number
one
I
want
to
talk
making
very
much
of
the
valedictorians.
First
then
I
want
make
some
general
comments
about
the
group
and
then
I'm
going
to
celebrate
a
few
key
individuals
in
this
in
the
group
of
38
valedictorians,
first
I'm
going
to
speak
to
the
valedictorians.
The
rest
of
you
want
to
continue
having
lunch,
ignoring
this
aspiring
dilatoriness.
This
is
for
you
first
to
become
a
valedictorian.
I
know
it's
taken
more
than
just
your
brains.
E
It's
been
a
relentless
Drive,
steadfast
perseverance
to
be
the
best
at
everything
you
do
on
every
test.
On
every
paper
on
every
class
that
you
have
taken,
you
are
pride
of
EPs.
We
applaud
you
and
I
have
no
doubt,
you've
been
reliable,
you've
been
consistent
and
you
understand
how
to
follow
the
game
plan.
Getting
good
grades
and
behaving
well.
E
I
know
have
been
critical
to
get
to
this
place
to
get
to
this
honor
and
you
will
probably
you
are
awarded
for
following
the
game
plan,
but
I
want
to
let
you
know
I
believe
you
can
do
more
to
change
the
world
to
run
the
world.
You
will
need
to
be
disruptive
at
times.
You
will
need
to
be
bold
and
so
beyond
just
working
hard.
You
need
to
be
visionary
and
you
need
to
be
courageous.
E
Parents,
don't
listen
to
this
next
comment,
but
you,
young
people,
you
are
about
to
enter
a
world
with
very
few
rules.
School
is
full
of
rules.
Life
does
not
have
rules
and
there's
actually
a
Harvard
researcher,
adding
shawn
Achor,
who
talks
that
college
grades
aren't
any
more
predictive
of
life
success
than
even
rolling
a
dice.
So
that's
the
part
I!
Don't
want
parents
to
listen
to,
but
I'm
telling
you
young
people.
Please
follow
your
fault,
your
passions
of,
follow
them
intensely.
E
You
to
be
great
at
a
few
things
achieve
mastery.
I
want
you
to
be
I.
Want
you
to
be
happy
with
what
you're
doing
you
will
not
be
happier
when
you
become
more
successful.
You
will
be
more
successful
when
you
are
engaged
in
things
that
make
you
happy
and
things
that
make
you
feel
passionate.
And
thirdly,
learning
is
not
just
about
what
you
get
from
your
professors
and
your
teachers
in
college
or
the
books
you're
going
to
have
to
read
it's
about
authentic
experiences.
It's
about
doing
the
work
in
communities.
E
It
is
about
doing
the
work
in
the
context
of
life.
So,
as
the
mayor
and
chair,
Mel
Neal,
said
get
involved
in
creating
change
in
your
communities
and
make
sure
you
are
involved
beyond
just
your
book
work
and,
lastly,
don't
underestimate
the
power
of
your
racial,
your
cultural
and
linguistic
identity.
We
are
members
of
a
global
society
and
your
cultural,
your
racial
and
linguistic
identities
are
aspects
so
embrace
your
identity,
don't
suppress
them
more
important
than
ever
in
this
time
in
our
country
in
our
world.
It
is
critical.
You
recognize
this
now.
E
A
E
The
United
States
representing
over
eleven
countries
from
Colombia
to
Kenya,
to
Cape
Verde
to
Korea,
they
are
probably
beyond
bilingual.
They
are
probably
trilingual.
More
importantly,
they
are
multicultural,
they
are
able
to
navigate
multiple
old,
and
that
is
why
there
will
be
our
leaders
and
our
advocates
and
entrepreneurs
of
tomorrow.
Some
of
them
are
student-athletes.
Others
of
them
are
talented
actors,
there's
science,
fair
winners
and
community
volunteers,
the
members
of
debate
teams,
math
clubs
and
there's
even
a
young
entrepreneur
who
is
starting
his
own
clothing
line.
E
E
E
Get
sweaty
I
believe
just
when
he
is
sitting
over
there,
just
sueño
Lopez
Fernandez.
He
is
the
valid
train
of
Boston
international
high
school.
She
also
served
in
student
government
and
as
a
valued
member
of
the
soccer
team
and
Model
UN.
She
arrived
in
the
country
four
years
ago
and
she
is
now
the
valedictorian
of
Boston
International,
a.
E
Next
student,
Tony
or
Joe
Jackson
immigrated
from
China
at
the
age
of
17
and
October
enrolled
himself
in
Charlestown
High
School,
where
he
became
the
president
of
National.
Honor
Society,
scored
a
perfect
800
on
the
math
SAT
and
is
now
heading
with
a
full
ride
to
Williams
College,
and
he
is
the
Vala
Torrio
Charlestown
high
school.
E
B
E
Is
not
very
good
looking,
sometimes
so
I'm
just
so
impressed
with
all
of
you,
so
in
closing
it
is
very
clear
we
have
such
an
impressive,
impressive
group
of
young
people
in
this
room.
You
are
making
us
proud.
I
cannot
wait
to
see
how
much
more
proud
you
make
us
by
being
visionary
by
being
bold
and
beta
and
by
being
courageous.
Thank
you
so
much.
C
C
Will
be
the
first
one
in
my
family
to
go
to
college
north-eastern
is
where
I
will
continue
my
journey
and
keep
adding
into
my
life
stories.
We
all
have
stories.
Let
me
tell
your
mind:
I
was
born
in
El,
Salvador
I
came
to
United
States
when
I
was
12
years
old
and
cousin
intense
back
in
El,
Salvador
I
grew
up
with
gang
violence.
C
Seeing
murdering
and
stealin
became
normal,
because
that's
what
I
would
see
every
day
my
dad
decided
we
needed
to
leave
the
country
for
own
safety,
and
so
we
did
building
a
new
life
has
been
easy,
but
it
wasn't
impossible
either.
I
must
admit
it
came
with
a
lot
of
hardships,
but
with
family
I've
overcome
them.
When
we
first
arrived,
I
had
to
do
my
homework
under
a
candlelight
because
we
don't
have
electricity.
I
was
Sonia.
Sixth
grader,
as
you
know,
have
any
power
to
change.
What
was
going
on.
C
The
only
thing
I
could
do
was
studying
to
learn
English,
so
I
could
be
moved
on
into
general
education
classes.
I'd
learned
to
appreciate
the
smallest
things
in
El
Salvador
walking
to
school
safely
and
playing
outside
in
the
park
were
not
option
because
it
was
too
dangerous.
The
first
time
I
saw
safe
being
a
teenager
in
doing
one
of
the
things
I
love
the
most
going
to
school
was
when
I
came
to
the
United.
C
This
philosophy
I
applied
to
my
academic
studies
in
middle
school
high
school
and
will
continue
to
do
so
in
college
and
beyond.
My
starting
is
the
story
of
so
many
young
people
in
this
country,
as
the
young
latinas
students,
the
author
against
me,
but
I'm
defying
them.
My
drive
to
succeed,
it's
bigger
than
any
odds.
My
dreams
and
aspirations
who
take
me
forward,
but
I
cannot,
and
we
cannot
forget
to
the
back
I'll
community
in
address
these
needs
for
my
undergraduate
degree
and
pursuing
political
science
and
international
affairs.
C
C
It
is
my
duty
to
give
back
to
a
community
that
gave
me
a
home
when
I
needed
one
as
in
you
mana
and
you
spot
some
high
school
students.
I
was
provided
with
equivalence
for
education,
regardless
of
nationality
language
barrier,
because
the
video
ability
religious
background
or
home
country
my
opportunities
in
El
Salvador
were
limited
in
East
Boston
high
school
in
WPS
system
welcomed
me
with
open
arms,
creating
opportunities
and
opening
new
doors
that
I
never
imagined
I
could
ever
have.
C
I
would
like
to
give
a
special
thank
you
to
my
teachers,
with
my
ranch
with
Maurey
leprosy,
miss
Rams,
miss
craving
and
mr.
Lincoln's,
for
helping
me
see
my
potential
and
for
staying
after
school
to
help
me
understand
class
concepts
for
pushing
me
to
do
my
best
in
my
classes
and
challenging
me
every
day.
My
success
is
our
success.
C
I
graduated
business
Ames
we
our
voice
and
our
talents
to
ensure
that
these
free
in
with
credible
system,
keeps
forming
future
valedictorian
stem
leaders.
My
struggle
might
not
be
the
same
asteroid
struggle,
but
we
all
struggle
in
different
ways.
We
came
to
survive,
we
came
to
have
a
better
life
and
we're
living
the
American
dream.
Let's
acknowledge
how
far
each
and
every
one
of
us
has
common
would
keep
going
graduating
as
class
valedictorian
was
not
easy,
but
we
proved
it
was
not
impossible.
C
Many
other
moments
in
life
will
not
be
easy,
but
now
we
know
what
they
are
no
impossible
feel
proud
and
birds
where
you
come
from
stay
humble
and
below
your
own
struggles.
My
struggling,
my
parents
shaped
me
into
the
young
lady
I
am
today.
My
plaintiff
tells
me
to
the
forget
where
I
come
from
and
I,
don't
know
where
I'll
go
in
the
future.
I'm.
Now
passing
these
words
and
to
you,
I
can't
wait
to
see
include
amazing
things.
C
A
Let
me
tell
you
how
this
is
going
to
work
in
a
moment,
I'm
going
to
begin
calling
up
the
students,
your
schools
will
be
called
in
alphabetical
order
when
I
read
your
name,
please
step
forward
to
collect
your
gift
and
have
your
picture
taken
with
the
mayor
chairman,
O'neal
and
the
superintendent,
and
each
student
will
receive
a
citation
and
an
Amazon
gift
card
after
your
photo
is
taken.
Please
return
to
your
table
at
the
end
of
the
program.
