Description
At the 521 Overlook, Mayor Michelle Wu, Boston School Committee Chairperson Jeri Robinson, and BPS Superintendent Dr. Brenda Cassellius celebrate the 33 valedictorians of Boston's public high schools.
A
A
Special
thanks
to
the
incredible
sponsors
and
you
can
find
a
complete
list
of
the
sponsors
in
your
program
book
because
of
their
generosity.
Each
student
listen
to
this
is
receiving
a
200
amazon
gift
card
to
support
their
transition
to
college
students.
Please
check
your
email
this
afternoon
for
details.
A
Today
we
are
celebrating
an
elite
group
of
young
people
who
have
worked
incredibly
hard
to
reach
the
top
of
their
class.
It
is
an
amazing
accomplishment
and
we
salute
you.
I'm
sure
the
students
would
agree.
They
did
not
achieve
this
success
alone
along
the
way
they've
been
supported
by
caring
adults,
many
of
whom
are
here
with
us
today.
So
first
I'd
like
to
ask
all
the
parents
and
family
members
of
our
valedictorians
to
please
stand
and
let's
give
them
a
big
round
of
applause.
A
A
A
Thank
you
all
for
your
hard
work
on
behalf
of
these
students
and
all
the
young
people
in
the
boston
public
schools.
At
this
time,
I
would
like
to
invite
a
person
to
the
podium,
who
is
my
pleasure
to
introduce
the
chairperson
of
the
boston
school
committee,
a
long
time,
education,
leader
and
a
bps
graduate
herself,
jerry
robinson.
B
Thank
you
kelly
and
thank
you
again
for
being
our
emcee
today.
It's
truly
a
pleasure
to
be
here
for
the
first
time
since
2019.
what
a
thrill
it
is
to
host
the
always
inspiring
boston,
public
schools.
Valedictorian
luncheon,
I'd
like
to
take
a
moment
to
introduce
my
fellow
school
committee
members
who
are
with
us
today,
vice
chairperson,
michael
o'neill,.
B
I
also
want
to
recognize
our
elected
officials,
some
of
who
will
be
joining
us
a
bit
later,
but
mayor
michelle
wu
who's
on
her
way.
State
representatives
rob
consalvo
and
jay
livingstone.
Are
they
here
not
yet?
Okay,
boston,
city,
council
at
large,
rusi,
lujun,
regine,
no
they're
all
coming:
okay,
aaron
murphy,
everybody's
coming
from
downtown
and
council,
brian
wuerl,
and
but
I
know
she's
here-
boston
teachers,
union,
president
jessica
tang.
Thank
you.
B
B
B
B
Our
mayor,
our
school
committee,
our
superintendent,
all
of
us,
are
committed
to
providing
the
best
public
education
in
the
country.
That's
what
we
work
towards
every
day,
raising
quality
while
expanding
equity
and
access,
but
it's
up
to
the
students
to
take
advantage
of
the
opportunities
provided
and
challenge
us,
the
adults
to
do
better
and
you've
done
that.
Thank
you
preparing!
For
today's
event.
I
was
struck
by
two
things.
B
First,
the
incredible
diversity
represented
here
today
from
haiti
to
hyde
park
from
east
boston
to
east
africa.
Our
valedictorians
literally
come
from
all
over
the
world.
Some
were
born
and
raised
in
boston
and
have
attended
bps
since
kindergarten.
Others
have
only
been
in
this
country
a
few
short
years
together.
You
create
the
rich
tapestry
depicted
in
the
collage
to
on
that's
on
the
screen
right
here.
This
is
boston's,
colorful,
diverse
and
beautiful.
B
I
was
also
struck
by
your
perseverance
reading
through
your
bios.
Never
did
I
hear
you
say
good
enough.
You're
always
striving
taking
ap
and
dual
enrollment
courses
exploring
new
fields
through
internships
learning,
a
new
language.
You
love
to
learn,
and
you
are
always
challenging
yourselves
and
when
covet
hit
during
your
sophomore
year,
no
one
could
have
predicted
the
impact
it
would
have
on
our
lives.
So
much
of
your
high
school
experience
was
disrupted
by
the
pandemic,
and
yet
you
persevered
that
resilience.
B
B
A
Thank
you,
chair,
robinson,
and
now
I'd
like
to
invite
to
a
podium,
a
person
who
came
into
office,
declaring
that
there
would
be
top
education
as
a
top
priority
in
her
administration,
and
with
that
she
has
announced
her
intention
to
bring
transformative
transformational
change
to
the
city
of
boston.
Please
welcome
mayor
michelle
wu.
C
Good
afternoon,
everyone,
I
am
so
excited
to
see
you
all.
I've
been
really
looking
forward
to
this,
and
just
my
heart
is
bursting
with
pride
at
each
one
of
you
and
knowing
how
much
you
have
fought
through
and
barreled
forward
with
over
the
last
couple
years.
You
are
truly
the
pride
of
your
families,
your
city,
your
communities
and
you're,
the
future
that
we're
counting
on.
C
So
I'm
I'm
really
excited
I'm
very
honored
and
grateful
to
be
here
and
to
share
this
stage
with
leaders
who
are
working
so
hard
in
our
district
every
day
to
lift
you
up
and
and
do
what
we
can
to
just
build
that
platform,
so
that
you
have
the
highest
point
possible
to
jump
off
of
in
in
your
career
and
and
spread
your
wings.
So
thank
you
so
much
to
superintendent
cassellius
to
madam
chair
robinson
and
all
the
leaders.
C
I
see
school
committee
members
and
bps
office
leaders
and
and
school
leaders
here
we're
so
so
grateful
for
the
work
that
you
put
in
every
day
in
doing
the
most
important
work
of
city
government,
which
is
to
provide
the
foundation,
the
soil,
the
the
nurturing
for
our
boston,
public
schools
and
our
students
to
thrive.
C
C
The
fact
that
you
are
where
you
are
right
now,
despite
the
impossible
happening
at
home
at
school
in
all
the
lives
of
people
across
the
neighborhoods
of
boston,
shows
just
how
ready
you
are
to
emerge.
Carry
forward
our
city
in
your
heart,
representing
representing
us
in
everything
that
you
do
moving
forward,
and
the
last
thing
I'll
share
is
just
a
bit
about
in
some
ways
how
surprising
it
is
to
me
that
I
get
to
be
in
spaces
like
this
with
you
at
fancy,
lunches
and
tables.
C
C
My
parents
are
immigrants
to
this
country,
I'm
the
oldest
kid
in
our
family
and
my
whole
childhood
in
some
ways
felt
like
being
an
interpreter
and
navigator.
My
parents
are
the
strongest
smartest
most
brilliant
people.
I
know
they
struggled
a
lot
in
their
immigration
journey.
They
themselves
were
also
children
of
immigrants,
because
my
grandparents
fled
civil
war
in
mainland
china
to
the
island
of
taiwan.
Then
my
parents,
immigrated
from
taiwan
to
the
united
states,
and
so
for
us.
C
And
when
I
was
growing
up,
asian
american
felt
like
two
separate
identities
at
home
dinner
with
chopsticks
speaking
in
mandarin
at
school.
Feeling
like.
I
couldn't
talk
about
what
I
ate
at
home
and
learning
what
I
could
and
couldn't
bring
for
to
lunch
in
my
schools
and
and
and
this
not
for
to
not
be
bullied.
And
so
what
we
strive
every
day
for
in
the
city
of
boston
and
in
our
boston
public
schools.
C
C
C
That
was
a
lot
of
pressure
for
me
to
do
thinking
about
100
years
in
the
future
and
I'm
just
new
in
my
job.
So
I
did
some
research
right
as
we're
trained
to
do
by
our
great
schools,
and
I
looked
up
what
previous
mayors
have
written
when
they
buried
time
capsules
in
different
parts
of
city
hall
or
in
the
old
state
house
and
other
buildings.
C
We
found
three
letters
in
old
time:
capsules,
one
from
1830,
one
from
1930
and
one
from
1981
and
they're
all
sorts
of
really
beautiful
reflections
in
there
about
what
they
hoped
the
city
would
look
like.
They
weren't
sure
they
imagined
all
these
ways
that
technology
could
take
us.
Some
of
them
talked
about
cloning.
Some
of
them
talked
about
clean
energy,
which
is
yes,
we're
headed
that
way,
but
one
other
common
characteristic
across
all
three
of
them
was
how
the
letters
began.
C
The
1930
letter
started
with
sir
the
1980,
the
sorry
the
1830
letter
started
with
sir.
The
1930
letter
started
with
deer
started
with
dear
sir,
and
then
the
1981
letter
started
with
dear
mr
mayor,
so
for
all
that
they
were
imagining
in
the
future.
About
cloning
and
where
we
could
go,
they
never
imagined
that
one
day,
someone
like
me,
someone
who
hopefully
reflects
some
of
the
experiences
that
you
all
represent
for
this
city
could
be
reading
that
letter
as
mayor
of
the
city
of
boston.
C
C
A
Thank
you,
mayor,
wolf
that
inspiring
speech.
Now
I
want
to
bring
to
the
stage
our
next
speaker,
who
has
grappled
with
some
of
those
formidable
challenges
that
the
mayor
referred
to
leading
the
district
through
the
pandemic
and
now
into
recovery.
Please
welcome
boston,
public
schools,
superintendent,
brenda
casilias.
D
Well
now,
I
do
think
I'm
between
your
food
well,
thank
you,
callie
for
the
introduction
and
for
serving
as
host
of
this
amazing
event.
A
special
thanks.
Thank
you,
of
course,
to
you
mayor
wu.
Thank
you
for
what
you're
going
to
bring
for
our
young
people
here
and
as
a
bps
mom
too.
We
really
appreciate
you
for
your
bold
vision
for
our
school.
So
thank
you.
D
Thank
you,
chair
robinson,
for
your
commitment
to
our
students
and
to
the
celebration
and
vice
chair
o'neal,
for
your
incredible
support
and
support
of
me
personally
as
well.
You
continue
to
be
valuable
thought
partners
and
steady
leaders
for
our
colleagues
on
the
school
committee
who
I
also
want
to
recognize
here
today.
D
I
would
be
remiss
if
I
didn't
extend
a
special
recognition
to
the
parents
and
guardians
who
are
here
at
our
tables.
I
know
you're
so
proud.
As
a
mom
of
a
graduate
just
last
week,
summa
laude,
I
have
to
break
a
little
bit.
She
just
got
her
first
job
as
an
art
teacher,
so
I'm
really
excited
for
her
to
go
into
the
education
field.
D
You
know
parents
and
families
are
children's
first.
Teachers
and
moments
like
today
are
just
a
testament
to
the
unwavering
support
and
guidance
that
you
all
bring
to
your
your
children
and
that
we
get
to
partner
with
along
the
way
and
all
of
our
teachers,
counselors
coaches
in
the
room
and
extended
to
our
school
buildings
and
all
the
adults
who
have
guided
our
young
minds,
helping
them
to
become
the
students
and
scholars
and
leaders
that
they
are
today.
D
D
D
It
took
me
a
while
to
figure
this
out,
as
others
tried
to
steer
the
direction
of
my
life,
but
I
looked
inside
and
asked
myself
what
I
wanted
and
what
I
saw
is
my
gifts
and
talents,
and
then
I
thought
long
and
hard
about
what
I
did.
What
I
wanted
to
do
and
what
I
wanted
to
bring
to
this
world
and
what
this
strong
sense
of
purpose
and
joy
in
living
could
bring
in
a
good
and
honorable
life.
D
D
Second
don't
grow
up
too
fast,
be
mindful
of
the
choices
that
you
make
these
next
several
years
as
you
embark
on
this
new
journey,
because
the
choices
you
make
today
impact
what
choices
are
available
tomorrow,
making
good
choices
matters
because
making
just
one
bad
choice
can
take
away.
Many
of
the
other
choices
you
may
have
in
life
so
make
good
choices,
and
third,
don't
beat
yourself
up
if
you
do
make
a
poor
choice
or
a
mistake,
look
at
what
went
wrong
and
think
through
it
and
learn
from
it.
D
D
D
You
learn
from
your
shortcomings
and
you
become
even
stronger,
and
your
toolkit
for
managing
through
life's
ups
and
downs
becomes
a
little
fuller.
That's
what
life's
all
about
becoming
yourself
through
all
of
it,
the
tough
stuff
and
the
easier
times,
but
growing
and
learning.
What
helps
is
what
helps
you
become.
Your
best
self
and
finally,
okay,
just
one
more
piece
of
advice,
always
find
ways
to
use
what
you've
learned
to
activate
your
gifts
and
talents
to
give
back
to
your
community
there's
nothing
more
rewarding
than
helping
someone
else.
D
We
know
you're
going
to
solve
big
problems
in
the
world
that
you
will
step
into
your
purpose
and
you'll
lead
us
to
a
better
world,
and
all
of
us
today
are
cheering
you
on,
because
we
need
you
but,
more
importantly,
we're
cheering
you
on,
because
that's
what
we've
always
done,
because
we
love
you
and
we've.
We
are
so
so
very
proud
of
you.
So
congratulations
again,
and
may
you
decide
a
good
and
honorable
path.
D
May
you
make
good
choices
along
the
way
and
may
you
commit
to
giving
back
in
service
to
your
community
and
oh
yeah
and,
most
importantly
again,
please
be
gentle
on
yourself,
love
and
forgive
others
generously
and
make
sure
you
do
it,
especially
in
the
harder
times
so
now
go
out
and
be
the
shining
light
in
this
world.
And
may
you
be
your
good?
May
you
be
you're
as
good
as
you
are,
as
you
are
in
service
to
others.
Thank
you.
A
E
E
E
I
was
very
excited
to
hear
that
news,
because
I
have
never
been
to
a
new
country
before
and
I
have
never
seen
plan
or
ride
one
when
arriving
at
the
airport
reality
hit
me
I
was,
I
was
delighted
and
dissected.
At
the
same
time,
I
was
delighted
because
I
could
travel
to
a
new
country
and
experience
new
things.
However,
I
was
detected
because
I
had
to
I
had
to
live.
Leave
my
mother,
my
youngest
sister,
my
relatives,
while
arriving
at
the
airport.
E
E
E
So
on
first
day
I
I
came
with
my
father
in
the
school
when
teachers
were
giving
welcoming
speech,
I
was
nervous
and
worried.
At
the
same
time
since
I
had,
I
don't
know
english
and
I
couldn't
understand
what
the
teacher
was
saying,
not
even
a
single
word,
and
it
was
so
hard
for
me
to
just
sit
down
and
watching
people
and
sit
down
and
not
to
understand
what
the
people
are
saying.
E
I
told
my
father
that
how
can
I
go
to
school
like?
How
can
I
go
to
class?
I
don't
know
in
english.
How
can
I
understand
things
and
my
father
is
a
big
supporter
he's
my
hero?
He
always
told
me
that
don't
worry
you,
you
will
go
to
school
and
you
will
learn
english
little
by
little
and
you
will
do
that.
You
are
a
big
person
at
first,
I
didn't
have
any
friends
or
people
I
could
talk
to.
I
was
always
alone
at
myself,
my
teacher
or
my
esl
teacher
specifically.
E
E
Not
knowing
the
education
system
in
america
was
very
difficult
as
I
as
I
was
going
to
the
school.
My
my
teacher
is
saying
that
if
you
want
to
go
to
college,
taking
ap
classes,
which
is
advanced
replacement
classes
will
be
good
for
you,
and
I
was
like
okay.
I
want
to
take
that.
I
want
to
take
advanced
replacement
classes.
I
want
to
take
challenges.
E
E
My
teacher
and
counselor
is
saying:
ap
classes
are
very
hard.
Every
classes
are
very
hard
with
difficult
vocabularies
and
they
they.
They
also
are
my
support
system.
They
are
like
my
family.
The
teacher
was
saying
yeah
just
keep
on
keep
on
working
on
your
english
and
be
more
prepared
for
your
ap
classes,
and
you
will
you'll
be
good
at
it
and
finally,
in
my
senior
year
I
am
able
to
take
ap
classes.
I
am
I
am
I'm
taking.
E
So,
finally,
I
am
taking
effie
biology,
every
language,
ap,
english
language
and
composition,
and
free
calculus,
and
also
I
took
dual
endowment
yeah
so
that
that
the
challenge
I
am
embarrassing
right
now
through
all
I
had
had
to
be
a
responsible
person,
because
I
am
the
older
one
and
my
mom
noticed
I
am
my
mom
is
not
here,
so
I
had
to
cook
for
my
father,
because
my
father
was
always
working.
E
So
my
for
my
father
and
my
two
younger
sister,
I
had
two
a
responsible
person
who
I
and
also
doing
the
house
chores,
which
I
did
not
do
back
in
bangladesh,
because
everything
maybe
cooking
and
houses
will
be
like
up
to
my
mom.
My
mom
would
take
care
everything,
even
though
it
is
impossible
to
put
in
words
how
difficult
was
how
difficult
it
was
to
overcome
those
challenges.
E
I
had
to
admit
that
it
has
taught
me
many
things
it
has.
It
has
given
me
a
like
many
experience
about
that.
E
E
Those
challenges
made
me
a
person
who
is
perseverance
and
know
how
to
face
challenges,
even
though
the
situation
might
be
difficult
it.
It
also
taught
me
it
also
taught
me
that,
even
though
the
decision
is
difficult
here,
you
have
to
be
persevering
and
not
to
give
up.
It
taught
me
to
that.
It
taught
me
to
have
a
dream
that
I
could
work
on
through
god's
mercy.
E
Having
so
life
life
is
life
was
so
tough
for
me,
so
having
it
having
for
having
a
profession
or
reaching
for
a
profession,
was
like
reaching
for
a
golden
apple.
For
me
see
when
I
started
to
go
to
when
I
started
go
to
college
and
my
teacher,
where
I
keep
constantly
asking
what
do
you
want
to
be
in
the
future,
and
I
was
like
keep
thinking
okay,
I
I
need
to
I
need.
E
I
need
to
think
something
that
I
could
be
and
what
I
am
interested
in,
so
the
so
my
my
dream,
bloomed
in
my
mind,
like
a
flower,
so
I
was
like
okay,
I
I'm
interested
in
health
care,
so
I
want
to
be
a
doctor,
a
prediction
who
helps
children
to
to
give
their
provide
their
good
health
and
and
not
only
not
only
I
have
a
dream.
Now
I
have
a
way
of
achieving
it.
I
have
I
have
I
have
my
family.
I
have
teacher.
E
Yeah,
that
is
all
about
my
stuff,
and
I
also
I
just
want
to
see
all
of
my
fellow
bellatorian.
E
E
E
A
Okay,
we
can't
start
crying
now
we
got
a
long
way
to
go.
Thank
you,
khadijah.
That
was
wonderful,
okay,
students.
I
want
you
to
listen
up.
This
is
how
it's
going
to

in
a
moment.
