January 18, 2018 - Mayor Walsh visited Mario Umana Academy in East Boston to announce a that the U.S. Dept. of Education's Education, Innovation, and Research program has given a $4 million grant to United Way of Massachusetts and Merrimack Valley to expand and evaluate BoSTEM, a city-wide initiativeaimed at increasing STEM out-of-school programming for high-need middle school students who are typically underrepresented in STEM learning and careers. Representatives from Sociedad Latina, Boston After School & Beyond, and other partner community organizations spoke about the opportunities this grant will provide for them and how it will facilitate their collaborations over the next five years.

Mayor Walsh also visited classrooms to take the time to speak with students about what they're learning and their educational experience. He answered their questions about immigration, education, what it's like being the Mayor of Boston, and more.
