From YouTube: Medal of Honor Park Opening
Description
Medal of Honor Park is now open for the summer! Mayor Walsh, former mayor Ray Flynn, and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the reopening in South Boston, which marks the completion of a $1.3 million renovation. The newly opened park also hosted another iteration of the city's Neighborhood Coffee Hour.
A
A
A
A
A
As
you
know,
it's
been
a
it's
been
a
terrific
rainy
season,
so
that'll
be
good
for
these
treat
for
these
trees
and
for
the
grass
that's
going
in
right
now,
just
over
on
the
other
side
of
the
park
on
the
end
street
side,
in
partnership
with
Boston,
Water
and
Sewer,
we
have
an
infiltration
system
going
in
and
what
we'll
be
doing
with
that
system
is,
will
be
actually
recapturing
the
groundwater,
and
so
that
will
go
right
back
into
the
park
and
hopefully
that
will
always
keep
this
park.
Beautiful
and
green.
A
A
quick
note
that
we
added
52
new
trees
to
this
park,
and
so
this
fall
is
going
to
be
beautiful.
Color
added
to
this
park,
as
those
leaves
change,
color
a
few
quick
thank-yous.
First
and
foremost,
you
couldn't
be
at
Medal
of
Honor
Park
without
thanking
the
South
Boston
veterans
group.
If
you
could
give
them
a
round
of
applause,.
A
Our
horticulture
division
in
the
city
of
Boston
does
amazing
work
as
you
drive
around
the
city.
You
see
the
baskets
of
the
flowers
that
the
median
strips
in
our
parks,
but
I,
think
everyone
in
this
neighborhood
knows
that
this.
This
middle
portion
is
maintained
by
the
veterans
group
and
they
do
extraordinary
work
and
we're
very
grateful
for
everything
they
do
and
we're
looking
forward
to
coming
back
in
September
when
all
the
work
is
completed
to
celebrate
their
work.
I
also
want
to
thank
the
South
Boston
moms
group.
A
If
there's
any
moms
that
are
members
of
the
moms
group,
please
raise
your
hands.
Thank
you
very
much
for
all
the
work
you
did
during
the
design
process
and
I
think
it
was
the
work
of
the
South
Boston
Mons
grew
up
and
the
other
community
members
that
result
in
such
a
beautiful
taut
lot
that
we
have
today,
including
the
the
water
play,
that
we're
going
to
be
celebrating
in
just
a
few
minutes,
and
then
I
want
to
thank
the
Friends
of
Medal
of
Honor
Park,
actually
newly-formed.
A
If
you
could
raise
your
hand
if
you're
one
of
the
Friends
of
Medal
of
Honor
Park,
who
formed
thank
you
very
much
enjoy
em
Marsha
and
everyone
else
involved
with
that.
I
want
to
thank
everyone.
Who's
going
to
help
us
maintain
this
park.
Now
that's
beautifully
done
and
the
capital
renovations
have
been
made,
we're
going
to
work
hard
to
maintain
it
so
that
it
always
looks
beautiful,
because
that's
what
sells
lost
and
deserves,
and
certainly
with
something
called
Medal
of
Honor
Park
deserves.
A
But
I
also
have
to
thank
the
members
of
the
Boston
Parks
and
Recreation
Department,
first
and
foremost,
our
general
superintendent,
Jim
Sheen,
the
area
foreman,
Joe
Talbot
and
the
area
superintendent,
Charlie,
Wright
out
and
all
their
crews
for
all
the
work
they
do
in
South,
Boston
and
beyond.
So
thank
you
very
much
and
I
think
our
ball
field,
crews
still
down
below
taking
taking
care
of
those
fields
as
well,
but
now
it
gives
me
great
pleasure
to
introduce
someone.
There's
been
a
great
advocate
for
these
spaces
and
very
early
on
when
he
became
there.
A
B
Thank
you
very
much,
commissioner
I
want
to
thank
Chris
out
in
the
parks
department
for
the
great
work
they
do.
I
want
to
thank
all
the
sub
boss,
a
neighborhood
neighbors,
to
joining
us
today
as
well.
In
the
hearing
this
new
and
improved
Medal
of
Honor
Park
I
want
to
thank
you
for
it:
Medal
of
Honor
Park
symbolizes.
What
neighborhoods
are
all
about?
It's
a
monument
to
the
South
Boston
natives,
who
served
our
country
in
every
year.
The
community
of
South
Boston
in
Boston,
remembers
those
special
people.
B
It's
a
place
where
generations
of
neighbors
have
gathered
to
play
in
celebrating,
as
I
was
walking
in
I
was
talking
to
one
of
the
guys
at
the
corner.
He
said
that
his
kids
played
here.
His
grandchildren
are
playing
here.
He
played
here
and
in
this
product,
so
it's
amazing,
seeing
now
seeing
three
or
four
different
generations
that
have
been
able
to
use
and
enjoy
this
great
park
here
in
South
Boston.
As
I
said
earlier,
this
park
has
stories
written
into
it.
B
We
work
with
Tommy
Lyons
and
the
South
Boston
veterans
to
pay
tribute
to
the
three-self
awesome
Medal
of
Honor
recipients,
private
Frank,
Walker,
private
George,
nee
in
first
class,
private
first
class
Michael
Perkins
today
isn't
about
the
celebration
with
investors.
We
are
going
to
have
a
celebration
with
the
veterans,
but
today
is
something
that
every
time
we
come
to
this
product,
we
can't
forget
the
service.
The
sacrifice
of
the
veterans
gave
to
our
country,
particularly
here
from
South
Boston.
B
We
also
have
a
bench
dedicated
to
the
beloved
neighbor
Amy
Lord
right
behind
me.
There's
a
bench
dedicated
to
Amy
Lord
also
named
is
one
two
old
photographs,
so
we
could
recreate
the
Victorian
friends
that
was
torn
down
in
1899
this
renovation
honors
the
neighborhoods
rich
history.
It
also
ensures
the
pocket
is
accessible
and
more
enjoyable
for
everybody
to
be
able
to
come
into.
We
have
new
play
equipment,
new
picnic
tables,
water
features,
performance
areas,
better
lighting,
improvements,
ability
and
safety
plates
it
more
than
I
know.
B
A
couple
of
trees
have
came
down
during
the
construction
I
apologize.
We
replaced
them
with
50
new
trees
in
the
park
and
we
want
to
make
sure
that
we're
going
to
continue
the
growing
our
trees
in
our
park
space
and
our
green
space.
Here
in
South
Boston,
we
renovated
two
of
the
entrances
to
third
Street
to
be
88
compliance.
We
upgraded
our
play
equipment
Howie,
oh
she's,
like
stop
talking
so
I
can
play
get
these
cameras
out
of
here.
That's
what
we're
going
to
do?
We
well
don't
worry
right
down
to
one
minute.
B
We
made
a
great
investment.
The
investment
we
made
here
was
an
investment
made
collectively
and
I
want
to
thank
the
elected
officials
who
helped
make
this
possible
I
want
to
start
with
the
South
Boston
zone.
I
want
to
start
with
city
councilor
Billy
lending
hand,
who
would
push
through
this
from
the
first
day
that
I
got
it
to
the
mayor's
office
to.
B
B
We're
able
to
work
with
our
partners
at
the
state
and
Nick
Collins
on
during
the
when
the
Medal
of
Honor
recipients
were
here
in
Boston,
we're
able
to
work
with
the
state
to
get
some
state
and
city
funding
and
put
it
together.
So
we
can
do
some
of
the
walkways
over
and
then
we're
able
to
take
it
a
step
further.
One
thanks,
representative
Collins
for
your
involvement
here,
I.
B
C
B
B
D
The
epicenter
of
City
point
right
here,
Medal
of
Honor
Park,
and
if
you
think
about
the
public
investment,
that's
occurred
not
just
here
in
the
park
but
down
below
across
the
street,
and
eventually
those
new
truck
those
old
trucks
will
be
off
of
1st
Street
we've
had
nearly
over
tens
of
millions
of
dollars
being
spent
just
in
this
area
to
make
this
a
better
higher
quality
of
life
location,
and
it's
already
such
a
great
great
place.
It's
an
honor
for
me
to
I've
served
all
of
you
for
10
years.
D
D
In
his
three
plus
years
as
mayor
of
this
city,
it's
been
on
steroids,
money
is
being
invested
in
reinvested
and
the
city
couldn't
look
any
better
and
I
the
amount
of
money
that's
being
spent
on
sidewalks
trees,
streets,
roadways,
parks,
schools,
it's
because
mayor
Walsh
believes
in
reinvesting
in
the
city
that
he's
called
home
his
entire
life.
So
I
want
to
thank
the
mayor
and
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you.
C
Thank
You,
Billy
and
good
morning,
everybody,
as
the
mayor
mentioned
this
actually
I,
feel
that
this
is
my
Park
playing
a
flag
football
over
here
as
a
kid
whiffle
ball
tournaments
over
here,
Little
League
down
below
and
obviously
men's
softball
there.
So
this
is
really
a
testament
to
the
commitment
that
the
mayor
has
in
all
the
parks
across
the
city.
An
Easter,
asabi
and
I
were
just
talking
about
we've
gone
to
the
park
dedications
all
across
in
the
coffee
hours
across
the
city,
and
this
is
the
largest
turnout
that
right
here
in
South
Boston.
C
But,
more
importantly,
it's
the
beautification
of
all
these
great
taught,
lots
and
playgrounds
and
ball
fields
that
we're
seeing
into
this
administration.
So
round
of
applause
for
the
mayor
and
his
commitment,
as
well
as
commissioner
Cooke,
who
I
think
is
the
best
clark's
commissioner
around,
but
also
at
these
events,
I
tell
people
to
take
advantage
of
the
brainpower.
C
That's
here
the
mayor
has
most,
if
not
all
of
his
commissioners
here
Commissioner
Evans,
South
Boston
zone
is
here:
Commissioner
Finn,
Commissioner,
P
and
doctor
from
the
Transportation
Department
Commissioner
sterling
from
Veterans
Affairs
I
also
see
Jerome
Smith
is
here
from
Neighborhood
Services
Danny
Manning
Kenny
Ryan,
the
mayor's
team,
lots
of
great
folks
that
are
here.
If
you
have
any
issues
any
problems
or
concerns
public
safety
issue,
it's
a
park
issue.
It's
a
water
and
sewer
issue.
It's
you
name.
It
transportation
issues,
parking
traffic.
C
The
commissioners
are
here
and
take
advantage
of
that
at
the
time
that
you
have
with
them
and
if
you
don't
catch
up
with
them
today,
obviously
call
my
office
call
Billy's
office
call
Nick's
office
call
aneesa's
office
and
we'll
get
you
connected
so
with
that.
Hopefully
our
seniors
will
enjoy
the
park
here
in
the
passive
space.
I
hope
our
kids
will
and
the
families
and
the
young
moms
will
enjoy
the
tot
lot
and
the
young
dads
and
Kathy
some
have
a
great
day.
Thank
you
all
and
let
me
introduce
a
direct.
The
body
here.
C
E
Thank
you,
Michael
I'll,
be
brief.
Just
want
to
thank
the
mayor
again
for
this
investment
here
today.
Extremely
significant
I
haven't
seen
that
type
of
investment
in
my
time
here
as
state
representative
and
that
having
the
support
of
like
the
councillors
is
huge.
You
know
previous
general
council
in
Ian
was
a
big
advocate
for
investment
on
the
recreational
side,
but
this
is
a
significant
up
here
on
the
top
shelf
it
at
empty
I
do
want
to
mention
two
significant
investments
to
the
state
is
going
to
be
making
right
behind
us.
E
Some
of
you
may
have
seen
in
the
paper
recently
in
investment
at
the
city
point
bus
terminal,
this
fall,
so
people
will
be
able
to
pick
up
the
bus.
Take
a
lot
of
the
load
off
of
Broadway,
we
hope
and
and
then
secondly,
for
sustain
it
for
the
sustainability
of
this
park.
The
Commissioner
had
brought
up
sustaining
this
August
Park,
which
is
which
is
critical.
E
So
just
one
of
them
that
make
that
soft
announcement
we're
getting
some
more
details
in
the
coming
weeks,
but
with
the
help
of
council
Linehan
council
priority
council
sabe
george
center
for
ian's
and
mayor
walsh,
we
were
able
to
pull
that
together
to
make
sure
this
Park
in
Farragut
in
marine,
because
their
most
impacted
by
currently
terminal
are
going
to
have
some
support
for
the
long
haul.
So
with
that,
thank
you
all
for
coming
out
or
hope
you
guys
enjoy
that
summer.
