Description
Malcolm X Park Final Design Meeting - Thursday January 21, 2021 (Part 1)
A
Welcome
and
good
evening,
everyone,
this
is
the
third
and
final
malcolm
x
park
community
meeting.
My
name
is
lauren
bryant
and
I'm
the
project
manager
for
this
project
for
boston
parks.
Before
we
jump
into
our
presentation,
I'd
like
to
just
go
over
a
few
how
to's
and
what
to
expect
we
could
go
to
the
next
slide.
Please
tonight's
meeting
is
going
to
be
recorded
and
will
be
available
on
our
project
website
within
a
week
and
we'll
make
sure
at
the
end
that
everybody
has
that
link
to
the
website.
A
Just
want
to
make
sure
that
I
say
thank
you
to
those
of
you
who
are
able
to
make
the
meeting
tonight,
but
I
know
not.
Everyone
can
so
if
you
would
like
to
share
what
you
learned
tonight
or
direct
your
neighbors
friends
and
family
to
our
website
for
them
to
view
the
recorded
meeting.
That
would
be
wonderful
to
help
share
that
information.
A
Also
just
to
ask
everybody
that,
during
the
presentation
portions
of
the
meeting
tonight,
if
you
could
keep
yourselves
muted
when
you're
not
asking
questions,
it
would
be
helpful
just
for
everyone
to
be
able
to
hear
better
next
slide.
Please
we
want
to
just
make
sure
that
every
that
this
meeting
feels
accessible
to
everyone
and
comfortable
for
everyone.
A
So,
let's
just
please
remember
to
be
respectful
and
mindful
of
other
people's
opportunity
to
participate,
and
if
you
want
to
you're
more
than
welcome
to
set
up
a
conversation
with
me
at
any
point,
and
you
can
feel
free
to
contact
me
at
laurent.bryant
at
boston.gov
and
I'm
going
to
put
that
in
the
chat
as
well,
so
that
you
guys
can
have
that
too.
A
Next
slide,
please
so
I
know
I
know
a
lot
of
us
are
very
familiar
with
zoom,
but
some
it's
new
too.
So
I
just
want
to
make
sure
that
everyone
knows
that
there
are
several
ways
you
guys
can
engage
with
us
tonight.
We
know
that
there's
a
lot
of
information
to
share
and
a
lot
that
we
want
to
get
your
feedback
on
and
due
to
this,
we're
going
to
try
something
a
little
different
than
we've
done
at
our
last
zoom
meetings.
A
So
we're
going
to
break
down
the
presentation
into
topics
and,
after
each
short
presentation,
we're
going
to
stop
to
take
five
minutes
to
discuss
each
topic
and
get
your
thoughts.
We're
hoping
that'll
allow
people
to
engage
in
the
conversation
earlier,
instead
of
listening
to
the
entire
presentation
and
maybe
it'll
help
your
thoughts
that
are
on
the
the
tip
of
your
tongue
at
that
moment
be
able
to
talk
about
them
sooner
rather
than
later.
A
However,
for
that
to
work
and
for
us
to
get
through
all
of
the
really
exciting
information
we
have
to
share
we're
going
to
try
to
be
really
strict
and
keep
it
to
those
five
minutes.
At
the
end
of
the
full
presentation,
we
are
going
to
open
it
back
up
for
more
discussion.
So,
if
you
think
of
things
after
we've
closed
a
certain
topic,
we
can
always
get
back
to
it
a
little
later.
A
Also,
if
you
have
any
questions
that
pop
up
in
your
head
during
when
we're
presenting,
please
feel
free
to
add
it
into
the
chat,
and
we
can
answer
it
during
the
discussion
time
and
if
it's
a
quick
and
easy
question,
we
can
answer
it
right
away,
but
please
just
remember
the
chats
really
for
questions
and
comments
directly
related
to
this
project.
A
Hopefully
that
takes
care
of
all
of
our
housekeeping
information.
Would
you
mind
going
to
the
next
slide,
please
so
now
on
to
the
project
tonight
just
want
to.
Thank
you
guys
for
your
time.
I
know
it's
hard
to
take
time
for
community
meetings
and
that
everybody
is
feeling
meeting
and
zoom
fatigue
and
it
certainly
says
a
lot
about
how
important
this
park
is
to
the
community
to
have
such
a
great
turnout
tonight.
A
So
we
really
appreciate
you
guys
taking
that
time,
we're
going
to
introduce
the
team
next
do
a
quick
overview
of
what
we've
heard
from
the
community
in
the
past
and
summarize
how
we
got
to
where
we
are
today
and
then
go
into
the
presentations
of
the
design
that
we're
going
to
propose
to
you
next
slide.
Please
next,
one
too,
please
so
our
project
team
I'd
like
to
acknowledge
the
city
members
that
are
at
the
meeting
today
and
who've
been
instrumental
in
helping
us
get
to
this
point.
A
We're
joined
by
rob,
rotenbeuker
who's,
our
chief
engineer
at
parks,
zoe
davis
from
the
environment
department,
sarah
rodrigo
from
the
arts
commission
we've
also
been
coordinating
with
other
city
departments
and
joshua
mcfadden
from
economic
development
who
couldn't
join
us
tonight,
but
we'll
be
sharing
later
in
the
meeting.
How
we've
been
coordinating
with
all
of
these
groups
I'm
going
to
introduce
our
design
team
now
from
westin
and
samson?
A
A
So
here's
a
quick
overview
of
where
we
are
and
what
our
next
steps
are.
So
this
is
our
third
meeting,
like
I
said
at
our
first
meeting
in
june,
we
talked
about
the
park,
got
a
sense
of
what
works.
What
doesn't
what
the
community
feels
is
important
to
save
and
what
needs
to
be
upgraded
or
changed
at
our
second
meetings.
In
august
we
had
one
virtually
and
one
in
person
in
the
park.
A
We
got
so
much
great
input
at
those
meetings
and
through
our
survey
so
tonight,
at
this
third
meeting,
we're
going
to
share
a
design
concept
with
you
all
that
we
hope
takes
everything.
We've
heard
from
our
time
with
you
and
creates
upgrades
that
respect
the
history
and
the
culture
of
the
park,
while
also
providing
the
amenities
and
the
upgrades
that
you
all
have
expressed
an
interest
in
so
we're
here.
To
present
this
to
you
and
to
hear
your
reactions,
we
want
to
know
if
we
got
it
right,
did
we
hear
you
guys
correctly?
A
A
Our
plan
is
to
bid
the
project
this
spring
and
start
construction
this
summer,
as
you
guys
know,
it's
big
park
over
15
acres,
and
so
it's
going
to
take
a
little
while
to
build
the
park
and
we're
anticipating
a
park
reopening
in
the
spring
or
summer
of
2022.
A
A
B
B
B
That
represent
a
radical
departure
from
what
exists
on
the
site
already.
What
we
hope
is
that
we're
honoring
everything
that
is
great
about
this
park,
that's
been
communicated
to
us
and
we're
making
it
better.
That's
really
sort
of
the
approach
and
the
strategy,
if
you
will,
from
a
global
perspective,
in
regards
to
what
we're
going
to
be
presenting
tonight,
things
that
we've
been
hearing
all
along
things
that
we've
observed
on
our
own
relate
to
many
of
the
goals
that
we've
talked
a
little
bit
about
before.
B
Clearly
upgrading
the
children's
playground
and
providing
greater
value
and
greater
enjoyment,
greater
opportunity
for
kids
to
learn
increasing
site-wide
accessibility
and
seating
options.
We
want
this
place
to
be
friendly
from
a
multi-generational
perspective,
from
an
accessibility
perspective
for
those
with
more
limited
mobility,
and
that
is
something
that
we
will
most
definitely
accomplish.
B
The
courts
are
a
great
aspect
of
this
park.
We
honor
that
we're
looking
to
improve
the
courts
over
current
conditions,
unifying
park
entrances
providing
additional
spaces
throughout
the
park,
both
in
the
core
areas
that
include
the
children's
playground.
The
court
complex
the
field
complex,
but
in
other
locations
around
the
perimeter
of
the
park,
for
instance,
to
support
some
folks
that
are
in
closer
geographic
proximity
to
those
particular
spots.
The
tree
canopy
is
great
and
awesome.
We
want
to
maintain
that
and
we
want
to
protect
it
and
we
want
to
enhance
it.
B
Climate
resiliency
is
a
big
part
of
what
we're
looking
at
whenever
a
park
is
renovated
in
the
city
we
know
we
have
to
provide
opportunities
for
greater
relief
from
heat.
Our
climate
is
getting
hotter,
it's
getting
more
dramatically,
wet
and
so
on
and
so
forth.
Safety
concerns
something
that
we're
taking
into
account.
We
can
go
so
far
in
regard
to
the
design
and
that
we
need
activist
neighbors
who
also
protect
their
park
and
look
out
for
the
safety.
B
Another
item-
that's
really
embedded
in
all
of
the
designs
that
we'll
share
with
you
is
even
increasing
to
a
greater
extent
people's
connection
to
this
great
park,
so
people
already
feel
connected.
We
want
people
to
be
feeling
even
more
connected
in
even
more
product
protective
of
the
of
the
finished
product.
Next
slide.
B
So
a
summary
of
progress
to
date,
we
have
been
busy
and
we've
had
lots
of
folks
from
the
community
helping
us
get
to
where
we
are
at
this
moment
in
time.
This
is
our
third
public
meeting
in
this
format.
Everybody's
aware
that
we
had
an
on-site
workshop
where
we're
out
there
for
a
few
hours
and
lots
of
people
stop
by
and
exchange
great
information
that
we've
built
upon.
B
We've
had
online
surveys,
three
in
fact,
one
coming
off
of
the
last
public
meeting,
one
that
was
specific
to
the
school
community.
That's
adjacent
and
we've
established
lots
of
themes
that
have
been
coming
out
of
these
interactions
in
regard
to
the
athletic
field,
as
lauren
just
explained,
it's
a
new
component
that
wasn't.
B
B
B
Mike
will
really
be
talking
about
what
we've
heard
in
regard
to
play,
equipment
preferences
and
a
lot
of
folks
expressed
a
desire
to
head
towards
traditional
style
of
play,
equipment
or
a
nature
inspired
inspired
style
of
equipment.
We
may
have
some
offerings
that
really
connect
in
both
of
those
space
types
of
play.
Climbing
swimming
socializing
socializing
is
a
really
important
thing
in
regard
to
a
playground.
A
playground
is
a
destination
and
all
members
of
the
family
unit
come
out
and
enjoy
what
a
playground
has
to
offer.
B
We
want
to
make
sure
that
there's
opportunities
for
people
to
feel
comfortable
to
connect
with
each
other
and
so
on
and
so
forth.
Mike
will
go
into
a
little
bit
more
detail
about
this.
Next
slide,
please,
I
mentioned
that
we
had
in
september
the
on-site
workshop.
Here's
a
couple
of
photographs.
We
identified
some
basic
concepts.
B
People
were
extremely
generous
in
sharing
their
thoughts
about
what
they
were
seeing
and
what
they
would
like
to
see
at
this
park,
and
it
was
a
great
opportunity
to
actually
walk
to
different
destinations
in
the
park
and
talk
really
specifically
about
how
to
improve
certain
areas.
We
hope
that
when
you
see
the
designs
in
just
a
moment,
we've
been
successful
in
responding
to
a
lot
of
the
comments
that
we
heard
at
that
interaction
and
through
the
other
interactions
that
I
mentioned.
I
also
mentioned
that
we
reached
out
to
the
student
population
and
the
student
community.
B
Again,
people
were
asked
to
respond
to
a
style
of
equipment
that
we
were
representing
in
imagery
and
most
people
gravitated
towards
traditional
and
from
the
school
community
contemporary
and
nature
inspired
sort
of
flip-flopped,
with
the
other
pole
that
we
just
presented
to
you
a
few
moments
ago,
but
look
at
socialize
more
than
swinging
sliding,
spinning,
mazes
sensory
play
and
so
forth.
I'm
socializing
with
something
that
really
resonates
with
people,
so
shade
seating
space
to
accommodate
gatherings,
informal,
formal,
another
kia
being
a
very
key
item
to
this
audience
as
well.
Next
slide,
please!
B
C
Thank
you
gene
again,
I'm
michael
easler,
I'm
the
project
landscape,
architect
with
wesson
and
samson,
and
as
gene
mentioned,
we've
been
doing
a
lot
of
design
coordination
with
both
community
contributors
and
and
city
stakeholders
throughout
the
process.
Since
we
started
back
in
may
and
june
and
we'll
continue
to
through
the
rest
of
the
process
until
construction
begins
and
even
during
construction,
there's
been
a
couple
of
key
elements
that
have
been
called
out
since
the
first
community
meeting
that
we've
reached
out
to
specific
people
to
follow
up
on.
C
That
includes
the
basketball
courts
and
athletic
fields,
and
we've
had
conversations
with
coach
dennis
wilson
and
we
hope
to
continue
to
as
the
design
develops
in
that
area.
Around
the
playground
area.
C
We've
been
working
with
omo,
moses
and
we'll
continue
to
work
with
him
to
develop
a
design
trail
or
I'm
sorry,
a
math
trail
or
an
education
trail
concept
to
work
along
with
the
core
play
elements
of
the
playground
and
there'll
be
more
to
come
on
that
in
further
in
the
presentation,
we've
also
been
meeting
with
a
group
of
local
historians,
including
rhinel,
collins,
derek
evans
and
others,
and
we're
working
to
develop
an
understanding
of
the
history
and
culture
that
we
want
to
present
in
some
of
the
informational
panels.
C
This
is
a
process,
that's
only
really
just
begun,
and
in
the
next
few
months,
as
we
go
from
this
final
current
design
and
take
any
input
that
we
get
from
you
guys
and
move
it
excuse
me
towards
construction
documents,
we'll
really
delve
into
the
details
and
what
we
want
to
present
with
their
help.
C
We've
also
met
with
city
stakeholders,
and
that
includes
the
age,
strong,
boston,
commission,
boston,
arts,
commission,
climate,
ready,
boston,
boston,
police
department,
disabilities,
commission
and,
more
and
again,
in
the
same
way,
these
are
coordination
elements
that
will
continue
on.
As
we
develop
this
project
and
try
to
get
to
a
really
wonderful
park
next
slide,
please.
C
The
other
thing
that
we
wanted
to
touch
on
was
you
know.
We've
heard
a
lot
of
concerns
in
the
first
two
meetings
and
and
in
the
site
visit
as
well
as
in
the
comments
from
the
surveys.
