From YouTube: The Yard Community Garden Ribbon Cutting
Description
At the Tobin Community Center in Mission Hill, "The Yard" community garden is dedicated to Ida Graves, a longtime resident and community activist. Mayor Walsh cuts the ribbon and unveils a plaque alongside the Graves family.
A
B
To
the
yard,
let's
see
all
right:
applause
welcome
to
the
yard.
B
A
So
my
name
is
John
Fitzgerald
I'm,
president
of
Tobin
community
center,
and
it's
an
honor
to
be
here
today
to
have
see
this
event
with
all
of
you,
the
missional
community
DCYF
community,
the
mayor,
the
folks
of
the
city
of
Boston.
We
really
think
we've
done
something
great
here,
we're
happy
that
you
all
came
to
celebrate.
A
So
it's
a
real,
proud,
proud
day
here
in
Mission,
Hill
we've
had
a
lot
of
them
lately
and
that's
a
great
thing
because
for
those
who
are
here
today
for
those
that
not
only
are
we
here
to
think
about
the
new
beginnings
that
are
happening
and
to
celebrate
those
and
for
those
that
will
get
to
enjoy
this
park
for
the
future.
But
we're
also
here
to
reflect
on
those
that
got
us
here
and
pay
remembrance
to
those
as
well.
So
with
that
this
project
is
sort
of
a
microcosm
of
the
Mission
Hill
community.
B
A
D
Thank
You,
Jordan
and
I
want
to
thank
John
for
his
work
here
as
well
in
the
city
and
I
think
he
was
speeding
through
this
because
Halloween
is
here
and
we
got
to
get
home
and
you
can
do
are
in
trouble.
So
thank
you
to
our
Fitz
I
want
to
thank
Commissioner
Morales
feel
great
work
on
the
BCF
staff
here
at
the
Colvin.
Thank
you
guys
and,
ladies
for
the
great
work
you
do
every
single
day
you
proud
of
the
work
you
do.
D
I
want
to
thank
City.
College

with
us
today:
Thank
You
counselors
akin
for
pushing
this
and
India
to
move
this

clarity.
Thank
you
Michael,
as
well
as
here
with
us
today,
State
Senator,
Sonia
India's
is
with
us
Thank
You,
senator
for
being
here
in
Co
work,
state
representative
and
Shimon
Jeffrey
Sanchez.
Thank
you,
but
representing
for
your
great
work,
Mike
Ross,
Thank
You
counselor
this
time
to
Mike
Ross.
It
only
took
six.
She
is
that's
all!
Well,
we
got
it
done.
You
know.
Thank
you.
It's
a
big
space.
D
You
know
modeler
Thank,
You,
counselor
I,
wanted
to
thank
Sandra
as
well
from
Wentworth
and
Trish
Lyons
and
I
want
to
take
everyone
with
something
to
do
with
today.
This
is
certainly
an
exciting
opportunity
here.
The
space
back
here
looks
great
Thank,
You
Kath
as
well
for
what
you
do
and
pushing
everybody.
This
community
space
has
been
a
dream
for
a
long
time,
and
today
it's
reality.
This
investment
is
nearly
a
million
dollars
and
in
the
Mission
Hill
in
the
new
backyard.
I
want
to
congratulate
them.
D
I
want
to
thank
also
Zakim
in
particular,
for
for
working
with
PC
way
off
and
making
this
a
priority.
This
big
clapping
clap
from
this
this
committee
space
reflects
the
energy
and
creativity
of
Mission
Hill,
and
many
of
us
were
back
here
two
years
a
year
and
a
half
ago
on
on
a
celebration,
and
it
didn't
look
like
this,
and
the
investment
is
actually
incredible.
The
patio
that
that
is
here
and
that
this
is
gathering
will
be
here
for
generations
to
come.
The
turf
field
is
something
that
our
kids
come
on.
D
We
have
an
outdoor
classroom,
that's
going
to
connect
our
world
and
new
ways
to
our
students
and
making
sure
that
they
can
learn
in
this
space
in
and
in
Mission,
Hill
I
think
that
that's
also
important
and
the
resources
the
programming
here
at
the
Tobin
Lake
after-school
sports
are
real
important.
So
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you
I'm
rushing
through
this,
because
I
want
to
get
to
something.
That's
really
important
to
me.
I
want
to
thank
the
Mission
Hill
community.
I
want
to
thank
you
for
your
activism.
D
I
want
to
thank
what's
special
about
Mission
Hill
is
whether
it's
40
years
ago,
30
years
ago,
20
years
ago,
ten
years
ago,
today,
it's
still
a
special
place.
There's
a
sense
of
pride
that
Mission
Hill,
that
you
don't
feel
in
every
part
of
the
city
of
Boston
is
I.
Look
around
I
see
the
immigrant
community
in
Mission
Hill
today.
That's
here
that
a
different
generation
ago
might
have
been
a
different
immigrant
community,
but
the
struggles
were
the
same.
There
were
large
families,
they
were
living
in
homes
of
Mission
Hill.
D
B
D
D
20
years
ago,
I
was
a
young
state.
Representative
and
I
was
in
room
130
for
the
State
House,
and
my
friend,
Kevin
Fitzgerald
was
up
around
540
and
he
said
to
me.
I
said:
Fitz
I
want
to
come
up
here
with
you,
and
the
rep
at
the
time
is
with
Stephen
Toulmin.
He
had
won
the
Senate
race.
He
says
just
let
the
speaker
know
so.
I
did
and
the
speaker's
office
didn't
get
back
to
me.
It's
my
calling
if
it's
what
they
do,
it'll
just
move
in,
so
that
our
brain
which
they
represent.
D
If
I
really
didn't
know
if
it's
his
office
that
well
and
I
moved
in
over
the
weekend,
I
literally
pulled
in
I
moved
all
my
barks
and
I
brought
a
couple
people
George,
so
we
stole
some
desks
and
brought
them
up
there.
We
stole
a
few
chairs
along
the
way.
That's
what
you
have
to
do
at
the
Statehouse
and
we
did
and
we
got
up
there
and
when
I
get
up
here.
I
had
one
staff
member
at
the
time
and
I
met.
D
Kevin
staff
and
I
saw
a
bunch
of
people
that
were
dedicated
and
committed
to
Mission
Hill
into
Boston.
One
of
those
staff
members
was
a
guy
named
Leon
grace
and
we
became
instant
friends
over
the
years.
I
had
an
opportunity
to
meet
Leon's,
mom
and
I
knew
we
are
what
his
love
for
people
was
where
I
came
from.
It
was
for
his
not
just
working
after
Kevin
Fitz
who
loved
people,
but
it
was
in
his
mom
as
well
who
loved
to
help
people
tonight
I'm
on
it.
D
D
Either
was
a
beloved
member
of
this
community,
she
was
an
activist.
She
was
a
volunteer.
She
was
a
friend
much
like
a
lot
of
other
people
that
I
feel
like
Maria,
Sanchez
and
other
people
that
she
was
she
was.
She
was
a
person
that
was
able
to
stand
up
and
believe
what
she
believed
and
she
believed
in
she
never
stopped
working
to
improve
the
lives
of
the
people
of
Mission
Hill,
especially
the
kids
when
I
talk
about
his
name
would
be
a
special
over
generational.
It's
because
of
women
like
either.
D
That
grace
is
why
I
was
so
special
Leon
just
told
me
that
they
lived
right
there.
It's
a
there's,
no
coincidences
in
life.
There's
no
coincidence
isn't
like
that
that
they
used
to
look
out
the
window
here.
Look
at
the
space
here
and
now
that
either
is
gonna,
be
looking
over
the
space
again
or
making
sure
that
making
sure
that
the
kids
that
come
here
I
kept
an
eye
on
it
and
she
did
a
lot
of
looking
out
these
windows
as
well.
D
So
it's
important
for
us-
and
you
know
these
are
the
days
that
I
know
that
as
an
elected
official,
it's
important
or
a
permanent
monument
to
a
woman
who
loved
this
community
love
the
love
the
children.
This
community
had
the
spirit
of
this
community
and
was
from
this
community.
So
I
want
to
thank
the
whole
Gray's
family
for
being
us
today.
I
know,
I,
don't
know
everyone
is
here
because
Leon
didn't
give
me
a
breakdown,
but
I
know
we
have
funds.
Here
we
have
grandchildren.
D
D
E
B
A
B
A
A
F
F
F
Work
together
today
to
make
this
new
outdoor
space
possible.
So,
first
of
all,
I
want
to
thank
the
mayor,
Walsh,
who
made
sure
that
the
funding
was
put
into
this
Capitol
project
to
make
sure
that
this
project
came
to
politian.
Thanks
to
his
support,
our
community
centers
are
getting
much
needed.
Improvements
and
I
also
want
to
thank
Tricia
Lyons
director
of
the
public
facilities
department
for
her.
F
F
Higginbotham,
the
clerk
the
staff
at
PD
at
the
public
sees
apartment
are
great
to
work
with
and
always
make
sure
that
the
quality
of
materials
and
the
construction
that
goes
into
every
project
I
mean
our
top-notch
and
I
also
want
to
thank
at
Brophy
for
leading
that
team
and
always
being
a
friend
to
be
CYF.
I
want
to
give
a
special
thanks
to
John
Jackson.
Let's
give
a
round
for
John
Jackson
I.
F
F
F
A
look
at
it
to
make
sure
that
everything
was
placed
where
needed.
Replace
Mike
has
become
a
construction
guru
in
the
last
couple
years
because
of
all
the
projects
that
we
have
happening
and
also
John
Jackson
has
asked
me
to
also
say
a
few
things
on
his
behalf,
especially
to
Mission
Hill
resident
Maggie
Cohen,
who
secured
volunteers
to
support
this
project,
particularly
Wentworth
College,
whose
students
work
on
several
designs
for
this
space
and
built
a
beautiful
community
garden
that
you
see
behind
you,
former
city,
councilor,
Mike,.
B
B
B
F
F
B
F
F
A
great
care
for
this
community
but
most
importantly,
has
been
a
great
example,
especially
to
a
lot
of
Latino
males
we're
looking
to
get
into
public
service.
You
know
Jeffrey
I
do
this
work
because
you
said
that
example.
So
thank
you
and
to
the
many
Mission
Hill
residents
that
attended
several
community
meetings
and
gave
their
valuable
input
during
this
process
leading
to
today,
the
Mission
Hill
Community
Council,
which
works
with
DCYF
Tobin,
also
spent
many
hours,
making
sure
that
this
happen.
F
I
hope
I
didn't
miss
anyone,
but
if
I
did
I
bet,
one
of
my
other
speakers
will
correct
me
and
hopefully
acknowledge
you
as
well.
I
know.
Many
of
you
are
anxious
to
get
home
and
hand
out
candy
I
know:
I
am
I'm
a
father
of
five
so
to
your
neighborhoods,
but
I
will
also
like
to
invite
you
all
to
make
sure
that
tonight
you
join
us
in
Mission
Hills
annual
Halloween
on
the
hill
of
it
I
hear
it's
fabulous.
F
A
B
B
G
G
Where
your
priorities
are-
and
you
know
what
you
what
you
do
here-
you
know
this
might
come
as
a
surprise
to
my
friends,
Michael
Flaherty
and
some
of
my
colleagues
former
colleagues
back
here,
but
I
wasn't
the
best
athlete
when
I
was
growing
up
as
a
little
one.
You
know,
I
wasn't
the
biggest
the
strongest
or
the
most
talented
I'm
here
in
Mission
Hill,
where
they
made
a
movie
about
how
good
the
basketball
program
is.
John
Jackson
called
the
mission
right.
G
There
is
a
there
is
a
kid
that's
going
to
get
up
on
the
stage
one
night
and
their
life
will
change
when
they
sing
or
play
something
or
do
some
art
or
do
something
that
they
connect
in
another
way
with
people
because
of
this
space
and
I
think
that
it
was.
That
was
the
theory
behind
it,
and
the
amazing
thing
is
when
I
left,
you
know.
Usually
when
you
leave
all
these
ideas
can
get
kind
of
just
in
the.
C
B
G
G
A
Thank
you
Mike,
it's
great
to
have
you
back
as
well,
so
the
nuts
and
bolts
the
design,
the
things
that
you
were
standing
on
today
and
looking
at
we're
all
came
from
from
the
ideas
from
the
students
of
wentworth
university
and
here
up
next
to
speak
on
wentworth
and
then
how
they
came
about,
got
involved
in
pushing
for
them
to
create
this
beautiful
space.
For
us
on
sandy.
C
Everybody
all
right,
Mission
Hill,
is
such
an
extraordinary
place.
Look
at
us,
it's
a
place
for
partnership
and
collaboration,
and
it's
a
place
for
vision
and
project
execution,
and
it's
been
my
honor
to
work
in
this
community
on
behalf
of
Wentworth
for
the
last
thirty
years.
Thank
you
all
for
that
opportunity
and
thank
you
for
giving
our
students
and
faculty
and
staff
the
opportunity
to
work
with
you.
I
would
have
to
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
genesis
of
this
project
and
I
have
to
call.
C
I
taught
a
class
at
Wentworth
called
introduction
to
service-learning,
and
the
students
picked
this
backyard
as
a
project
to
redesign
and
at
that
time,
that
six
years
ago,
what
was
going
to
happen
in
this
backyard
was
a
very
hot
topic
in
the
neighborhood.
There
are
a
lot
of
great
ideas
and
a
lot
of
conflicting
ideas
and
our
students
rolled
up
their
sleeves
and
the
first
thing
they
did
with
Maggie's
leadership.
C
Is
they
interviewed
a
bunch
of
community
stakeholders
and
they
took
those
ideas
and
they
put
them
together
and
they
had
a
community
meeting
so
that
people
could
come
together,
reflect
on
those
ideas
and
start
to
evolve
a
concept
of
what
they
really
want
back
here,
and
there
were
about
three
community
meetings
and
the
neighborhood
had
a
chance
to
weigh
the
pros
and
cons,
and
the
great
thing
I
mean
the
really
great
thing
is.
It
looks
like
what
people
wanted.
C
We
kept
all
of
the
core
ideas
and
the
spirit
of
what
people
wanted
to
have
in
this
backyard.
I'm
kind
of
amazed
that
the
money,
thanks
to
John,
Jackson
and
Mike
Ross,
initially,
who
took
the
beautiful
designs
that
our
students
did.
We
had
summer
coops,
who
are
from
architecture
class
and
where's
Eric
Miller
under
his
direction.
Now
does
the
director
of
the
Center
for
community
and
learning
partnerships
and
they
came
up
yeah.
C
C
There's
so
many
people
contributed,
but
the
completion
of
this
project
is
a
testament
to
the
power
of
us
all
coming
together
and
the
tireless
efforts
of
dedicated
individuals
to
support
and
believe
in
the
community
dream,
and
particularly
thanks
to
the
city,
to
cope
with
all
that
money.
To
make
this
happen,
we
thought
we're
gonna,
build
it
ourselves,
but
so
anyway,
thank
you
all
and
hooray
for
Mission
Hill
I'm
so
proud
to
be
a
part
of
it.
Thank
you
on.
G
H
B
H
H
H
The
change
has
been
dramatic
and
it's
transformative
and
it
would
not
have
happened
without
is
such
an
incredible
participatory
community
planning
process
I,
look
forward
to
continuing
that
work
with
the
members
of
this
community
DCYF
with
our
colleagues
in
government.
We
wouldn't
be
able
to
do
this
also
without
our
colleagues
at
councilor
clarity
and
Senator
chang-diaz,
who
stood
with
us
every
step
of
the
way.
So,
thank
you
all
for
being
here
looking
forward
to
being
back
here
for
many
more
Halloween's
and
many
more
fun
activities
and
performances.
A
Thank
You,
counselor
and
I
know
there's
plenty
there
may
be
people.
We
forgot
to
thank
I,
see
a
couple
with
Pat
McDonough
two
on
the
scene
of
council
Ross's
office.
You
guys
are
always
a
great
help
in
this
process
as
well,
but
listen.
What
we'd
like
to
do
now
is
actually
cut
the
ribbon
and
unveil.
We
have.

mission
main
tenant
task
force
that
made
sure
that
this
mission,
main
housing
development,
is
what
it
is
today,
because
there
were
certain
organizations
that
not
want
to
see
this
and
that
even
up
until
recently,
there's
people
that
want
to
do
things
on
this
property.
But
this
property
belongs
to
the
people,
and
this
yard
reflects
a
woman
who
dedicated
her
life
to
making
sure
that
this
community
and
what
belongs
to
the
community
stays
in
the
community
and
I
forgot.
My
hike
girl,
nice.
E
E
When
there
were
other
things
that
shouldn't
have
been
here,
but
man
thank
you
for
doing
this
because
you
did
it
in
memory
of
a
very
powerful
individual
during
the
time
when
people
in
this
city
said
why
don't
black
and
white
and
Hispanic
and
others
get
along
and
I
mean
look
at
this
crowd.
It's
all
of
you.
We
are
the
example
for
the
city
for
the
state
and
for
the
nation
and
I'm
so
proud
of
what
all
of
you
have
been
able
to
do.
So.
Thank
you.
E
Thank
you,
everybody
that
had
a
part
of
this
my
vision,
but
mayor
this
wouldn't
have
happened
if
you
wouldn't
have
made
the
investment
and
John.
Thank
you
for
busting
your
back
every
single
day
here,
thanks
to
this
blue
Cyr
step,
remember
Ryan
and
all
these
boys
over
here
play
with
all
our
kids
and
talking
to
them
and
showing
them
love
and
that's
what
this
is
all
about.
So
thank
you
why
I
oughtta
be
graves
memorial
yard.
