From YouTube: Children's Park Ribbon Cutting
Description
Children's Park is now accessible to all kids in the community! Mayor Walsh joins Commissioner Cook at the newly renovated park in Roxbury to offer remarks on the importance of inclusive and accessible spaces in the City of Boston.
A
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
it
is
stopped
raining
and
I
would
like
to
welcome
you
to
beautiful
children's
park.
Give
yourselves
a
round
of
applause
for
coming
out.
This
is
just
an
extraordinary
extraordinary
day.
We
couldn't
be
happier
to
have
the
kids
from
the
Frederick
school.
How
about
a
nice
round
of
applause
for
the
Lila
J
Frederick.
A
We
have
a
lot
to
say
about
this
park,
but
it's
an
it
is
a
prime
example
about
what
cities
can
do
best.
This
was
a
collaboration
between
the
Department
of
Neighborhood
Development
and
the
Boston
Parks
Department
and
the
school
department.
But
most
importantly,
this
was
a
collaboration
with
the
community
that
surrounds
this
park,
the
community,
the
entire
time
through
this
process
was
fully
engaged
and
when
the
community
is
fully
engaged,
and
you
have
willing
partners
at
the
city,
you
get
something
that's
beautiful
like
this,
but
something
that's
beautiful
like
this
doesn't
happen
without
leadership.
A
When
mayor
Walsh
first
started,
we
talking
about
accessibility
to
parks,
and
we
were
bragging
to
the
mayor
that
97%
of
our
residents
now
98
percent
live
within
a
10-minute
walk
to
a
park
and
that's
great.
But
what
if
that
park,
doesn't
have
anything
for
those
kids?
And
so
the
mayor
said
it's
fine
that
people
can
get
to
the
park
within
ten
minutes,
but
I
want
to
make
sure
that
that
space
is
available.
It
has
play
value
and
is
meaningful
to
all
of
our
residents,
no
matter
what
their
abilities
the
mayor
made.
A
That
promise
and
three
years
later
we
have
an
extraordinary
space
like
this
absolutely
breathtaking
right.
Here
there
was
a
broken-down
bodega,
and
now
it's
beautiful
outdoor
exercise,
equipment
and
play
tables
in
a
beautiful,
accessible
slide
for
the
children.
This
neighborhood
that
doesn't
happen
without
extraordinary
leadership.
There
is
no
greater
friend
to
this
community
into
the
blossom
parks
than
the
mayor
Boston.
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
Martin
J
walls.
B
Let
me
thank
you.
Christian
and
I
want
to
learn.
I
want
to
begin
by
taking
the
parks
department
for
the
great
work
age
of
the
men
and
women
that
a
year
some
of
summer
videotape
and
some
clean
and
summer
taking
pictures.
Some
are
hanging
out
up
there.
I
just
want
to
thank
all
the
great
work
they
do,
because
we
have,
let's
have
a
great
part
of
the
time
in
the
city
of
Boston,
so
Chris
on
your
team.
Thank
you
very
much
tonight.
B
B
We're
on
the
news
tonight,
the
last
Friday.
Thank
you
very
much.
I
want
to
thank
Julia,
Marie
Marie,
who
I'm
going
to
bring
up
in
a
minute.
Thank
you
very
much
I'm
going
to
thank
the
Highlands,
a
foundation
play
Jordan
and
all
the
folks
at
Highlands.
For
being
such
an
incredible
partner.
I
want
to
thank
you
clean,
would
change
or
shot
coke.
Thank
you
and
the
students
from
the
the
Frederick
and
the
King.
Thank
you
for
being
here
today.
We're
excited
to
open
this
time
care
in
Roxbury.
It
renovations
the
renovation.
B
B
And
not
only
not
only
did
they
make
this
Park
happen,
but
they
also
made
shows
Park
was
inclusive
for
every
young
person
that
wanted
to
come
in
here,
or
anybody
that
wanted
to
come
in
here.
As
you
look
around,
there
are
no
obstacles
in
this
part.
People
can
come
in
here
and
enjoy
themselves
well.
Young
people
can
come
and
have
a
good
time.
So
I
want
to
thank
thank
you
to
everyone
before
the
students
that
had
disabilities
lacked
access
to
that
parks
in
the
city.
B
B
The
children's
part
was
that
was
also
a
recipient
of
the
youth
participatory
budget.
Let
me
just
explain
that
real
quick,
so
we
have
Youth
Council
the
mayor's
Youth
Council,
that
we
give
a
million
dollars
to
every
year
and
they
get
to
decide
where
the
money
gets
spent,
and
these
are
young
people
that
got
together
and-
and
they
spent
$31,000
in
this
pond.
So
you
think
about
that.
This
wasn't
prompted
by
adults.
This
wasn't
prompted
by
anyone
here,
desert
all
young
people
saying
what
they
wanted
to
do
with
their
money.
B
C
B
Babies
can
use
them,
teenagers
can
use
them
all
the
residents
can
use
them
and
everyone
in
between
it's
one
of
those
spaces
that
that's.
Why
we're
making
these
investments
in
this
product
here
we
also
have
cameras
just
to
keep
an
eye
on
what's
going
on
in
the
park,
so
we
wanted
to
super
main
a
safe
place
for
all
people.
B
There
should
be
a
space
for
anyone
that
wants
to
come
and
play
and
enjoy
themselves
any
current,
any
father
that
wants
to
bring
their
little
kids
or
any
mother
wants
to
bring
their
children
this
real
to
come
in
here
and
not
worry
about
stuff
and
again,
I
want
to
thank
the
residents
who
really
made
this
happen
today.
This
isn't
about
me
or
anyone
else
is
about
the
residents.
Thank
you
for
making
this
happen
today.
C
Thank
you
so
much
for
this
wonderful
mayor,
Walsh
and
Commissioner
cook.
For
this
beautiful
part,
my
colleagues
and
I.
We
are
so
lucky
to
be
teaching
the
best
classrooms
in
Boston
Public
Schools.
Our
students
come
to
school
every
day
with
a
smile
on
their
face,
ready
to
learn
and
determine
to
do
their
best.
C
The
fact
that
the
children
we
teach
have
special
needs
does
not
mean
they
do
not
recognize
when
they
are
being
valued
and
to
see
the
excitement
in
their
faces.
Every
time
you
walk
by
this
Park
has
been
very
special
for
all
of
us.
From
the
beginning
of
the
client
process,
we
have
witnessed
how
making
children
spark
apart
that
all
children
can
enjoy,
was
a
priority.
C
Ms
Brian
came
to
meet
our
students
after
our
input
and
advocated
for
them
at
community
meeting,
Commissioner
cooks
and
mayor
Walsh
continue
to
go
out
of
the
way
to
make
sure
all
of
Boston
clocks
are
accessible
for
students
with
limited
mobility
for
students
and
wheelchairs
spending
on
a
carousel
or
getting
on
a
swing
or
going
down
the
slide
or
often
out
of
reach.
This
is
why
we
are
so
lucky
to
be
living
in
a
city
that
celebrates
all
of
its
residents.
C
A
Thank
you.
Maria
really,
really
appreciate
that.
I
also
want
to
thank
our
cabinet
chief
awesome.
Blackmun
is
here
ab
c--
energy,
environment,
open
space,
submission
and
special
services.
My
cabinet
made
buddy
Christopher
buddy.
Thank
you
for
being
here
and
now
now.
It
gives
me
great
pleasure
to
introduce
our
real
partner
in
this
and
Sheila
Gillian
couldn't
be
here
because
she's
working
so
hard
that
she's
testifying
right
now
with
the
Department
Neighborhood
Development,
but
she
is
it
very
ably
represented
by
the
one
and
only
Donald
Wright.
A
D
I
think
good
morning,
I'm
not
going
to
take
up
much
time,
but
I
would
like
to
say
when
I
first
saw
this
park,
I
saw
it
as
a
best
thing
for
the
kids
to
really
have
fun
and
just
really
flourish
and
grow.
But
there
was
a
problem.
There
was
a
building
that
just
sat
next
to
it
that
the
community
was
not
pleased
with
the
building
was
falling
in
on
itself,
and
we
were
getting
multiple
calls
about
what
you
know.
What
we
needed
to
do
was
always
about
cleaning
up
the
building.
A
D
This
vision
and
turn
it
into
what
you
see
today,
this
is
really
really
exciting
so
that
everyone
came
together
and
made
this
work
so
that
these
beautiful
young
men
and
women
here
our
partners
here
in
the
community,
I'd
like
to
take
a
project
right,
Mike,
Russo
and
his
team,
for
what
they
brought
to
the
table
here,
because
this
gave
us
an
opportunity
to
hear
from
the
community
I.
Remember
the
community
meeting
sweet
freedom
with
a
woman
who
lived
just
across
the
street
and
she
would
say
you
know:
I
see
kids
climbing
on
the
building.
D
What
can
you
do
about
it?
Well,
it
really
made
sense
to
give
it
to
the
parks
department
and
actually
take
that
that
eyesore
off
and
open
up
this
beautiful
space
that
we
have
here
today.
So
I
want
to
thank
everybody
for
coming
out.
This
is
a
great
opportunity
and
let's
see
this
grow
throughout
the
city
of
Boston.
Thank
you.
A
Thank
you
so
much
Donnell
sacred
knowledge,
minute
project
right
and
Michael.
They
were
very
instrumental
in
this
project,
but
great
parks
don't
happen
without
great
design.
How
about
a
huge
round
of
applause
for
the
designers,
from
Weston,
captain
Brandon
and
now
sherry
pond
here,
because
she's
traveling
Europe
and
we
send
her
our
best
wishes
as
well.
Thank
you
and
then
all
of
you
who
live
around
here
know
that
the
construction
company
out
here
was
working
in
very
difficult
conditions,
a
huge
Ram
applause
for
targeted
construction.
Thank
you
so
much
everything
today.
