From YouTube: 2020 First Night Public Safety Press Conference
Description
Mayor Walsh and City officials share updates on public safety, road closures, and parking restrictions for Boston's New Year's Eve and First Night celebrations. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday!
A
All
right,
thank
you.
I
want
to
thank
all
the
press
for
coming
today.
I
want
to
thank
the
folks
behind
me:
Commissioner
Lee
gross
from
boss,
Police
Department.
She
fully
from
Boston
EMS
Commissioner
Joe
fain
from
Boston
Fire
MBTA,
Chief,
Ken
green
from
the
Transit
Police
Chief
Chris,
Osgood
chief
of
streets,
dusty
Rhodes
from
conventions
took
everybody
and
shoe
benefit
from
our
office.
Emergency
Management
I
want
to
thank
you
for
being
us
today.
A
I
want
to
just
start
by
saying
that
our
hearts
continue
of
the
family
of
Brandon
McSweeney,
the
young
man
who
lost
his
life
this
weekend,
while
setting
up
the
first
night
celebration
preparation.
This
is
a
horrible
tragic
accident.
We
want
to
I
want
to
ask
people
to
continue
to
keep
Brandon's
family
in
your
thoughts
and
prayers,
and
it's
coworkers
in
your
thoughts
and
prayers.
A
It
happens
to
a
today
afternoon
in
the
Copley
Square
area,
so
just
as
we
think
about
moving
forward
understanding
how
fragile
life
is
and
we're
here
to
celebrate
kind
of
talk
about
the
safety
of
first
night
and
the
excitement
of
ringing
in
the
new
year,
but
there's
a
little
bit
of
a
cloud
over
this
year
because
of
the
accident
that
happened
so
I
want
ask
everyone.
Please
keep
McSweeney
family
and
you
know
in
your
thoughts
and
prayers.
A
We're
also
here
tonight
to
talk
about
first
night,
which
will
take
place
tomorrow
afternoon,
starting
tomorrow
afternoon,
going
through
tomorrow
evening.
It
brings
people
together
from
all
over
our
city
and
all
over
the
Commonwealth
and
beyond
all
over
the
world.
Quite
honestly,
it's
a
great
fun
way
to
bring
in
the
new
year
and
it's
the
best
part
of
the
activities
that
we
have
here
in
the
city
are
open
and
free
to
all.
I
want
to
thank
conventions
for
taking
the
reigns
again
this
year
to
make
first
night
spectacular
celebration.
A
If
you
remember
a
few
years
ago,
we
were
worried
about
what's
gonna
happen
with
first
night
and
Convention
stepped
in
and
then
once
they
stepped
up,
but
stepped
in
to
help
us
move
forward.
So
we
want
to
thank
them
that,
as
always
top
priority
is
safety,
making
sure
that
the
event
is
safety
safe
for
all
people
that
come
into
the
city
of
Boston.
All
of
our
public
safety
agencies
have
been
working
hard
to
make
sure
that
this
is
gonna,
be
a
safe
night
and
continues
to
be
a
safe
night
for
everyone.
A
There'll
be
a
strong
Public,
Safety
presence
all
throughout
the
city
of
Boston.
Our
officers
are
gonna,
be
doing
their
part
along
with
EMS
and
fire
and
MBTA,
and
actually
we
have
some
State
Police
helping
in
different
areas
as
well.
We
also
need
the
public's
health
help
to
ensure
that
everyone
is
safe
before
I.
Do
that
we're
gonna
have
a
large
presence,
GNC
in
town,
but
also
we're
gonna,
have
a
presence
in
our
communities
as
well
in
our
neighborhoods.
Our
neighborhoods
are
out,
and
the
Commission
will
talk
about.
A
This
are
always
a
top
priority
for
us
as
well.
To
make
sure
that
people
can
celebrate
in
their
communities
and
not
have
to
worry
a
few
reminders
for
everyone
on
plans
for
the
weather,
we
want
you
to
make
sure
you
dress
appropriately
the
forecast
right
now.
It
looks
like
likely
rain
and
then
cloudy
about
43
degrees
in
the
is
pass
has
been
colder
than
this,
but
still
with
the
rain
and
we're
cold,
you
can
still
on
get
can
be
very
cold
out
there.
A
So
asking
people
to
dress
appropriately
public
drinking
is
not
allowed
we're
asking
people
not
to
drink
and
drive.
This
is
a
family-friendly
event.
Anyone
who's
been
into
first
night
in
the
past.
There's
a
lot
of
young
people
there,
a
lot
of
young
kids
there,
so
I
asked
you
to
act
responsibly
because
little
ones
are
there
and
they're
there
as
well
to
enjoy
the
first
night,
particularly
in
the
early
part
of
the
event,
we're
asking
you
to
pay
attention
to
Street
closures
and
parking
restrictions.
A
They
go
into
effect
tomorrow
afternoon
in
a
lot
of
the
Copley
Square
area.
So
we're
asking
you
to
kind
of
keep
an
eye
on
that,
if
at
all
possible
we're
asking
people
to
take
public
transportation
into
town,
be
aware
of
your
surroundings
when
you
come
in,
if
you're
not
familiar
with
Boston,
just
make
sure
you're
aware
of
your
surroundings.
A
If
you
see
something
that's
unsafe
or
suspicious,
we
want
you
to
tell
many
of
to
tell
one
of
the
many
officers
that
are
on
duty
they'll
be
happy
to
help,
as
they
say,
there'll
be
a
large
presence
of
public
safety
personnel
out
there.
Now
you
can
ask
any
one
of
them
for
any
assistance
you
might
need
we
need.
We
need
the
public
to
be
our
eyes
and
has
to
make
sure
that
New
Year's
Eve
is
a
success.
A
We
have
also
various
representation
and
officials
who
will
be
who
today,
they're
gonna,
try
and
get
in
some
more
detail.
I
will
let
them
go
a
little
further
in
the
plans
and
get
a
little
more
elaborate
on
them
again.
I
want
to
thank
all
the
safety
personnel
officers
for
keeping
our
city
safe.
First
night
is
for
every
single
resident
of
our
city
and
not
Commonwealth.
A
That
comes
into
the
city
and
enjoys
in
the
police
offices
and
and
many
of
the
officers
and
firefighters
you
see
out
there
and
EMS
they're,
basically
being
ordered
to
work
tomorrow
night
to
make
sure
that
everyone's
safe,
so
they're
gonna
be
out
there
making
sure
that
the
community
is
safe.
I
want
to
wish
everyone
a
very
happy
and
safe
and
healthy
2020
and
before
I
hand
off
the
Commissioner.
What
we're
going
to
do
is
listen.
We're
gonna,
have
Commissioner
gross
gonna,
speak
chief
green
from
the
MBTA
police.
A
B
Everyone,
the
mayor's,
covered,
a
lot
of
the
topics,
but
we
just
want
everyone
to
know.
This
is
Boston
we've
been
here
before
and
to
celebrate
responsibly
as
we
bring
2020,
and
so
with
that
being
said,
we
are
working
with
state,
local
and
federal
agencies,
as
of
yet
there's
no
credible
threats
to
the
parade,
and
we
want
everyone
to
be
our
eyes
and
ears.
Let's
remember
that
this
is
our
city,
we
protect
it
and
we
look
out
for
each
other
as
well
as
chief
Julio
MS.
Mr.
B
no
fen
the
fire
department,
your
fire,
your
first
responder
family
will
be
out
there
in
abundance,
not
only
downtown,
but
we
want
you
to
know
that
the
neighborhoods
are
covered
as
well.
For
the
Boston
Police
Department,
you
will
see
uniformed
officers
will
have
plainclothes
officers
you'll
see
officers,
you
probably
won't
see.
This
is
all
in
an
abundance
of
caution,
because
we
want
everyone
to
know
we're
going
to
try
to
keep
this
as
safe
as
we
can
be,
and
it
can
be
as
well.
Remember
please.
B
This
is
a
family
event,
a
family
event,
so
we
don't
need
anyone
drinking
alcohol
in
public
smoking
marijuana
and
do
it
at
home
police
for
the
safety
of
everyone,
no
flying
of
drones
as
well
and
again,
if
possible,
use
public
transportation
have
plenty
of
taxis
in
the
city
other
transportation.
So
we
want
everyone
to
act
accordingly
and
and
just
be
responsible
and
we'll
cover
each
other.
I'm
gonna
turn
this
over
to
chief
green
Thank.
C
You,
commissioner,
good
afternoon,
everyone
so
fewer
things,
I'm
gonna,
say
already
been
said,
but
I
think
they're
important
enough
to
repeat
the
first
night
celebration
is
a
family-oriented
event,
so
we
encourage
families
to
utilize.
The
MBTA
transportation
system
come
out
to
the
city
of
Boston
and
to
enjoy
the
festivities.
The
Transit
Police
will
have
additional
transit
officers,
both
uniformed
and
plainclothes
throughout
the
system,
to
ensure
that
everybody
has
a
safe
and
efficient
travel.
We
asked
our
riders
to
act
responsibly
to
be
respectful
and
mindful
of
children,
the
elderly
and
people
with
disabilities.
C
As
you
use
our
system,
the
consumption
of
alcohol
and/or
unruly
behavior
will
not
be
tolerated,
as
I
just
stated
that
we'll
have
additional
officers
out
there
to
ensure
that
everybody
behaves
appropriately.
Currently,
there
are
no
known,
credible
threats
to
this
event
or
to
the
MBTA.
However,
we'll
continue
to
be
in
constant
communication
throughout
the
night
without
a
local
state
and
federal
law
enforcement
partners.
C
As
always,
we
ask
the
public's
help
the
biggest
asset
or
resource
that
law
enforcement
has.
Is
you
the
public,
the
our
extra
set
of
eyes
and
ears
I?
Believe
the
mayor
just
said
that
the
more
eyes
and
ears
out
there,
the
better
transit
police,
can
be
contacted
at
six
one,
seven,
two,
two
two
one,
two
one
two
or
simply
download
the
free
app
that
the
MBTA
provides
for
its
riders.
It's
called
the
CCA
app.
C
C
If
we
need
more
questions,
if
we
have
any
questions
and
we'll
send
an
officer
down
to
investigate
immediately
so,
together
with
your
help,
we
all
can
have
a
safe
and
enjoyable
first
night
on
the
transportation
side,
the
transit
system
is
free
at
8
p.m.
any
other
information.
You
need
transportation
wide.
Please
access
our
website
at
MBTA,
comm,
Megan,
I,
think
I'm.
Gonna
have
dusty,
come
up
now
right.
D
D
The
person
I
team
has
worked
very
hard
over
the
last
several
practical
II
the
whole
year,
getting
ready
for
tomorrow's
celebrations
and
we're
very
happy
to
to
again
comment
that
this
event
is
free.
It
is
fun
and
it's
for
family
and,
as
the
day
progresses,
the
entertainment
shifts.
Accordingly,
we
start
off
at
11:45
and
we
have
activities
in
the
Boston
Public
Library
Trinity,
Church,
Old,
South,
First,
Church
of
Christ
scientists
and
in
the
in
our
most
beautiful
Copley
Square.
D
What
you
see
with
the
public
safety
and
the
MBTA
and
the
mayor,
the
agency's,
it
could
not
happen
if
they,
if
the
city
did
not
support
this
event,
so
we
volunteering
our
time
to
put
together
this
wonderful
cultural
celebration
truly
appreciate
the
fact
that
it
can
door
because
of
the
mayor's
office
thrilling
ice
sculptures,
the
ice
sculptures
with
the
weather
that
we
have.
They
will
be
there
they're
just
going
to
go
out
a
little
bit
later
tomorrow
morning
than
ordinarily
we'd
be
building
them
right,
as
we
speak,
it's
too
rainy
to
do
that.
D
Just
now,
so
they'll
be
out
ready
to
go
by
noon
tomorrow.
The
ice
sculptures
the
features
of
the
first
night,
the
ice
sculptures,
the
music,
the
lighting,
the
lighting
is
spectacular.
We
have
a
jewel
in
Copley
Square,
with
the
Fairmont
Copley
Plaza,
the
Boston
Public
Library
training,
church,
an
Old
South,
and
by
taking
that
lighting
and
up
lighting
those
wonderful
buildings,
we
have
our
own
wonderful
world
wide
famous
plaza.
The
people's
procession
will
begin
at
6
p.m.
D
and
come
down
Boylston
Street
to
the
Boston
Common,
whereupon
thanks
to
David
Moog,
our
we
will
have
found
city
of
Boston
family
fun,
fireworks
at
7:00
p.m.
which
is
really
very,
very
exciting.
It
lights
up
the
whole
common
on
the
Frog
Pond.
We
will
have
Olympic
style
ice
skating,
which
will
go
on
for
two
hours
from
5:00
to
7:00
and
the
peoples
possessing.
We
will
then
go
back
to
Copley
Square.
D
We
will
have
non-stop
to
stage
musical
entertainment
right
up
until
midnight
and
that
countdown
and
Copley
we
will
have
pyrotechnics
off
the
roof
of
Fairmont
Copley
Plaza,
which
those
of
you
have
seen
it
before
is
really
quite
spectacular,
followed
by
fireworks
on
Boston
Harbor
sponsored
by
Boston
Harbor,
now
at
midnight.
So
between
and
and
this
event
it's
been
able
to
be
put
together
because
of
the
sponsors,
the
hotel,
the
hospitality
community,
the
the
plumbers
Union.
So
many
sponsors
have
stepped
up
so
that
we
are
able
to
have
this
wonderful
celebration.
D
We
hope
to
see
all
of
you
there
again.
It's
free
thanks
to
the
MBTA
and
getting
in
and
out,
and
we
want
to
see
all
those
strollers
and
all
those
little
kids
with
their
eyes
all
bug-eyed
when
they
have
those
fireworks
explode
over
their
head.
So
thank
you.
Everyone
and
we'll
hope
to
see
you
all
tomorrow.
A
Thank
you
very
much
and
before
I
get
into
questions.
I
just
want
to
comment
on
those
of
you
watching
at
home.
I,
don't
think
this
is
live,
but
the
men
behind
the
cameras
we
have.
Unfortunately,
we
have
a
Jets
and
a
Buffalo
Bills
Jersey
on
today,
so
I
have
to
buy
some
I
have
to
buy
you
guys
some
some
presents
out
there.
I,
don't
know
what
that's
all
about
so
we'll
say.
But
anyway
it
love
to
open
up
for
questions.
