From YouTube: Mayor Walsh's State of the City Address 2019
Description
Mayor Martin J. Walsh delivers his annual State of the City Address, live from Symphony Hall in Boston. Mayor Walsh reviews the City's progress and lays out his administration's agenda for the upcoming year
B
Ladies
and
gentlemen
good
evening
and
welcome
to
Symphony
Hall
at
this
time
we
remind
you
to
silence
all
devices,
including
your
cell
phone.
Please
take
a
moment
to
locate
the
exit
nearest
you
in
the
unlikely
event
of
an
emergency.
Please
follow
the
directions
of
our
Usher's
and
public
safety
team.
Thank
you
to
begin
our
program
this
evening.
Please
welcome
the
Villalobos
orchestra
from
the
Josiah
Quincy
Orchestra
program.
A
D
Good
evening,
it's
my
great
privilege
to
welcome
you
to
Symphony
Hall
this
evening
for
Mayor
Walsh's,
219
state
of
the
city
address
a
century
and
a
half
ago,
Oliver
Wendell
Holmes
called
the
Massachusetts
State
House
here
in
Boston.
The
hub
of
the
solar
system,
though
meant
as
satire
Bostonians,
took
this
to
this
term
and
expanded
it
to
describe
the
host
city,
which
has
been
known
as
a
hub
of
the
universe.
D
His
community,
a
coming
together
of
people,
ideas
and
values,
each
innovation,
each
shift
brought
forth
by
communities
of
people
coming
together
to
conceive,
create
and
work
together
for
growth
and
change.
Today,
Boston
is
still
that
hub,
even
in
the
face
of
a
changing
American
landscape
from
innovation
to
entrepreneurship.
And
yes,
education,
medicine,
arts
and
culture.
Boston
is
a
place
that
attracts
the
top
thinkers
and
doers
of
our
time
who
work
together
to
shape
our
future
and
almost
of
our
or
much
of
our
sense
of
community.
Today,.
E
We
can
continue
to
use
these
places
these
opportunities,
these
connections,
to
create
and
share
ideas
to
forge
a
future
and
to
make
Boston
and
the
world
a
better
place
for
all
I
I,
thanks
to
all
of
you
here
today
for
being
part
of
this
community
here
at
Symphony,
Hall
and
throughout
the
city
of
Boston.
Thank
you.
E
Good
evening
in
the
Christian
scriptures,
the
Epiphany
readings
this
past
week
have
been
about
rising
up
Isaiah,
the
Hebrew
prophet
says:
rise
up
and
splendor
Jerusalem.
Your
light
has
come
where
darkness
covers
the
earth
and
thick
clouds.
The
people's
Isaiah
says
raise
your
eyes
and
look
about
because
upon
you,
the
Lord
shines
in
our
world
today.
E
I
think
we
need
a
little
of
that
light
in
our
country
today
we're
experiencing
great
division
and
a
lack
of
unity,
but
in
the
scriptures
we
hear
of
a
God
that
shows
no
partiality,
yet
we
so
often
experience
the
opposite
in
our
churches,
our
communities,
cities
and
certainly
in
our
country.
So
this
evening,
as
we
all
gather
from
many
different
faith,
backgrounds
and
traditions,
denominations
and
belief
systems.
However,
it
is
that
we
name
our
higher
power,
let
it
be
love
the
source
of
our
compassion
for
the
least
among
us.
E
Lord
God
bless
this
gathering
this
evening
bless
our
city,
our
Commonwealth,
our
nation,
in
our
world,
take
away
any
darkness
and
thick
clouds
that
cover
the
people,
especially
the
most
vulnerable.
In
our
midst
help
us
in
government
and
service
to
be
your
presence
as
we
care
for
and
help
and
empower
each
other
bless
mayor,
Walsh,
Laurie
and
all
who
work
with
him
to
make
our
city
better,
especially.
F
In
those
areas
of
Education,
as
we
empower
our
children
to
succeed,
homelessness
as
we
take
care
of
the
most
basic
of
needs,
shelter
and
stability
as
we
create
meaningful
jobs
and
work
that
lends
dignity
addiction
as
we
accompany
those
suffering
and
find
solutions
that
build
bridges
with
healthy
others
and,
lastly,
frost
seniors,
who
deserve
our
respect
and
help
and
from
whom
we
can
grow
as
we
listen
to
and
learn
from
their
acquired
wisdom
from
life.
God
bless
us
and
empower
us
as
we
begin
this
2019.
F
F
Story
from
the
sacred
text
in
Genesis,
the
ancient
one,
the
patriarch
Jacob,
arrived
to
a
place
and
stayed
there
for
the
night.
He
rested
his
head
on
a
stone
from
that
place
and
dreamed
of
a
ladder,
or
maybe
a
ramp,
or
maybe
a
stairway
bridging
earth
to
the
heavens
there
on
it,
God
assured
him
I
will
be
with
you,
others
will
bless
themselves
by
you
and
your
descendants
Jacob,
awoke
and
realized.
The
divine
is
here
and
I.
I
did
not
know
it.
How
awesome
is
this
place,
as
we
gather
here
tonight?
G
Exclaim,
how
awesome
is
this
city
of
ours,
and
yet
do
we
know
it?
Have
we
realized
it?
How
can
we
ascend
that
ladder
to
ensure
that
there
is
a
ramp
to
elevate
us
all
step
by
step
by
step,
because
if
the
holy
one
of
blessing
is
here
with
all
of
us,
then
surely
all
of
us
must
be
here
for
one
another.
Let
us
not
slumber,
then
let
our
dreams
of
ascending
to
reach
our
highest
and
best
selves
be
realized
with
courage
and
perseverance.
G
The
holiness
of
this
moment-
and
this
time
is
our
own
awakening
to
the
awesome
human
potential
within
and
among
this
blessed
city,
we
feel
God's
presence
when
we
lift
up
the
Fallen
heal
the
sick,
free.
The
captive
keep
faith
with
those
who
sleep
in
the
dust
God
moves
among
us
and
with
us
to
reach
out
and
lift
up
one
another.
Then
we
discover
the
blessing
that
we
are
not
alone
not
alone
at
this
time
and
into
the
future,
not
alone.
A
Recognition
of
the
sacred
possibilities
how
we
join
together
and
work
with
one
another
appreciating
the
value
of
each
person,
aw
inspiring
blessing,
awaits
us
all
and
our
descendants
we
pray
on
this
night
of
reflecting
back
and
forward.
We
find
blessing
through
all
of
our
efforts
journeying
to
new
places,
but
not
resting
until
we
can
exclaim.
A
Smella
r-rahmanir-rahim
in
the
name
of
God,
the
most
merciful,
the
gracious
peace
be
upon
you
all
the
Prophet
Muhammad
may
the
peace
and
blessings
of
God
be
upon
him
said
each
one
of
you
as
a
shepherd
and
every
shepherd
is
responsible
for
his
or
her
flock
o
Lord.
You
have
made
our
mayor,
Marty,
Walsh,
hey
Shepherd
and
a
caretaker
of
this
city,
and
you
have
made
each
and
every
one
of
us
a
shepherd
in
our
own.
C
A
A
H
We
call
you
different
names,
some
call,
you
allah,
some
call,
you
elohim
some
call
you
Jehovah
some
call.
You
Brahma
some
call
you
the
unmoved
mover,
but
we
know
that
these
are
all
names
for
one
and
the
same
God
grant
that
we
will
follow
you
and
become
so
committed
to
your
way
and
your
kingdom
that
we
will
be
able
to
establish
in
our
lives
and
in
this
world
a
sisterhood
and
Brotherhood.
That.

J
To
the
people
of
Boston,
thank
you
for
the
privilege
of
serving
you
these
past
five
years.
I
love
my
job
every
day,
I
get
to
go
out
into
the
neighborhoods
to
talk,
listen
and
work
with
the
people
of
Boston
everyday
Bostonians,
walk
through
the
doors
of
City
Hall
and
share
their
hopes
and
dreams
with
me.
J
They
remind
me
of
how
grateful
I
am
to
live
my
dream
and
walk
through
those
doors
as
the
son
of
immigrants,
I,
think
of
another
door
that
opens
it
was
the
morning
after
my
election
in
2013
I
was
in
a
hotel
room
and
opened
the
door
for
the
worker
to
deliver
breakfast.
Her
name
was
Letty.
She
immigrated
from
Africa
to
follow
her
dreams
here
in
Boston,
she
came
around
the
current
and
gave
me
a
big
hug
and
she
was
crying.
She
said
we
did
it.
We
won.
We
are
going
to
be
mayor.
J
Letty's
here
somewhere,
thank
you
letting
it
hit
home
right
at
that
moment
what
this
job
means.
It
means
opening
doors
for
more
Bostonians
to
walk
through
people
of
every
race,
creed
in
class,
changing
a
city
changing
a
nation.
That's
what
ladies
Union
did
last
year
when
they
set
new
standards
for
hotel
workers.
Congratulations,
local
26,.
J
J
J
J
We've
done
it
before
and
we'll
do
it
again,
because
in
this
time
of
uncertainty
in
division,
Boston
offers
a
way
forward.
We
are
welcoming
more
voices
and
expanding
on
democracy,
we're
committed
to
leaving
no
one
behind
and
we're
not
just
surviving
we're
thriving
there's,
no
federal
policy
on
housing.
None
but
Boston
is
moving
forward.
We've
created
more
affordable
homes
in
any
time
on
record.
J
There's
no
national
infrastructure
plan
none,
but
in
Boston
were
rebuilding
roads
and
bridges,
making
our
streets
works
for
bikes
and
buses
and
opening
parks
and
libraries
all
across
our
city.
Smart
fiscal
management
has
unlocked
historic
investments
while
keeping
homeowners
taxes
among
the
lowest
in
the
state.
J
I
resilient
hobble
plan
will
protect
us
from
floods
and
we
have
a
strategy
to
be
carbon
free
by
2050.
We've
shown
that
differences
don't
have
to
divide
us
when
we
come
together.
Anything
is
possible.
That's
democracy!
In
action,
that's
how
we
built
this
administration.
We
want
office
in
a
coalition
that
wasn't
supposed
to
be
possible
working
people,
black
white
Latino,
Asian
all
came
together.
We
created
the
most
diverse
administration
in
Boston's
history
from
the
cabinet
to
the
front
lines.
We
listen
to
the
voices
of
every
community.
J
J
J
J
Less
than
a
decade
ago,
libraries
were
slated
for
closure.
We
listen
to
the
residents
who
cherish
them
today.
Not
only
are
they
open
was
invested
over
a
hundred
million
dollars
in
renovations
for
libraries
in
Mission,
Hill,
Brighton,
Rosendale,
Dorchester,
Roxbury,
Chinatown
and
other
neighborhoods.
That's
in
addition
to
78
million
dollar
renovations
of
our
historic
Central
Library
in
Copley
Square,
where
there's
more
to
come.
J
J
For
many
years,
the
conditions
of
our
pox
was
a
cause
for
concern.
Now
we're
investing
28
million
dollars
in
Boston
Common,
another
twenty
eight
million
dollars
in
Franklin
Park
and
we've
added
so
much
open
space
in
our
neighborhoods.
That
last
year
we
became
the
only
city
on
the
East
Coast,
where
every
single
residents
live
within
a
10-minute
walk
to
a
park.
J
When
we
took
office,
the
Boston
Public
Schools
have
not
had
not
been
on
a
regular
construction
plan.
In
over
40
years,
two-thirds
of
our
schools
were
built
before
World
War.
Two
many
lack
basic
amenities
like
gyms
and
cafeterias
that
students
in
the
suburbs
enjoy
that's
an
injustice,
so
we
listen
to
parents
and
teachers
and
students
tell
us
what
they
envision
and
we
more
than
doubled
our
building
budget.
Already,
we've
spent
over
300
million
dollars
on
brand-new
schools,
major
renovations
and
modern
furniture.
J
We
are
opening
doors
to
new
schools,
new
libraries,
new
homes,
new
jobs,
we're
listening
to
new
voices.
It's
not
always
easy
or
comfortable,
but
a
more
open
conversation
means
better
solutions
for
our
city,
the
sign
of
a
more
vibrant
democracy
in
it's
working.
You
hear
it
in
the
voices
of
the
students
at
the
new
Dib
one
STEM
Academy
in
Roxbury,
and
soon
at
Boston,
Arts
Academy
in
Fenway.
J
We
put
social
justice
at
the
heart
of
our
vision,
because
the
more
equal
conversation
means
a
more
resilient
City,
so
we'll
keep
leading
the
fight
to
defend.
Immigrants
will
continue
our
grand
breaking
work
to
achieve
gender
equality
and
we'll
never
stop
protecting
the
rights
and
embracing
the
identities
of
our
LGBTQ
community.
J
J
J
It
will
be
a
tribute
to
their
time
in
our
city
where
they
met
where
they
fell
in
love
and
form
their
vision.
It's
one
part
of
a
larger
cultural
shift
that
started
with
our
dialogues
on
race
to
make
sure
that
I
see
workforce
reflects
our
city's
people.
We
created
in
Office
of
Diversity
we're
diversifying
our
EMS
team,
we've
revived
the
Boston
Police
cadet
program
and
now
we're
proposing
a
first
ever
fire
cadet
program.
J
J
We
are
changing
Boston's
culture
for
the
better.
Our
City
Council
is
the
most
diverse.
It's
ever
been
in
background
and
experience.
Council
members
are
attorneys,
and
teachers
and
housing
advocates
small
business
owners
and
veterans.
Our
partnership
is
getting
results
from
adopting
the
Community
Preservation
Act
to
regulating
short-term
rentals
to
making
historic
investments
in
our
schools.
Our
state
House
delegation
reflects
our
city's
diversity,
our
strengths
and
our
values,
as
they
lead
the
fight
for
education
funding,
public
transit
in
the
environment.
J
J
H
J
J
We
support
small
businesses
because
they
lift
up
our
neighborhoods
recently
recently
that
you
know
recently,
we
helped
the
Fernandez
family
make
over
an
entire
block
in
Jamaica
Plain
for
their
second
supermarket
and
Bill
Banfield
will
soon
open
a
live
jazz
restaurant
in
the
city's
own
bowling
building
at
W
square
they're
here
with
us
tonight.
The
way
to
thank
them
for
their
partnership.
J
J

J
B
J
J
Our
ents
police
and
firefighters
work
every
day
and
night,
responding
to
overdoses
and
saving
lives.
We
launched
a
mobile
shops
team
to
take
needles
off
our
streets.
Those
financial
costs
are
steep.
The
human
cost
is
steeper.
Let
me
tell
you
what
I
think
about
when
I
see
a
needle
that
needle
went
into
an
arm
that,
on
belongs
to
a
person
that
person
is
suffering
from
addiction
and
at
or
a
whole
family
apart,
that
family
needs
our
compassion
and
that
person
needs
our
help
and
treatment.
B
We
don't
lead
by
ourselves.
We
lead,
as
the
capital
city,
an
economic
engine
of
a
great
Commonwealth
this
year,
we're
proposing
legislation
to
address
the
major
challenges
facing
our
city
and
state.
It's
an
ambitious
vicious
agenda
and
a
necessary
agenda
to
create
affordable
housing
and
keep
tenants
in
their
home
to
reduce
violence
and
expand
the
middle
class
and
protect
our
environment,
to
invest
in
education
for
all
of
our
students,
we're
building
a
coalition
of
residents
and
activists
and
legislators
and
then
invite
everyone
to
make
your
voices
heard.
B
B
B
B
B
One
of
the
founders

Eric

Eric's
idea
was
to
create
not
only
a
monuments
of
movements
to
support
veterans
and
goal
sath
families,
that's
what
they
achieved
in
2016
when
they
dedicated
the
mass
volunteers
Memorial
in
South
Boston
on
November
27
last
year,
Eric
was
killed
in
action
in
Afghanistan.
Now
his
wife
and
three
daughters
are
embraced
by
the
moments
he
was
part
of.
Let
us
keep
this
family
in
our
prayers
and
makes
Eric
supreme
example
of
service
our
guiding
star.
B
Five
years
together,
we've
made
Boston
a
more
compassionate,
a
more
dynamic,
a
more
democratic
city.
We've
listened,
we've
learned
and
we're
leading
I'm
proud
of
what
we've
achieved.
We
should
all
be
proud
and
we
should
be
ready
to
do
more.
Our
city
needs
us.
Our
country
needs
us
and
we're
just
getting
started
as
we
begin
our
six
year
together.
I
want
you
to
know.
My
door
remains
open
to
every
voice.
Every
idea,
every
dream
always
I,
invite
you
in
to
help
make
Boston
stronger
and
to
our

If
you
want
to
cut
crime,
protect
the
environment,
lift
Americans
up,
leave
no
one
behind
build
a
more
perfect
union,
then
look
to
the
city
of
hopes
and
hearts,
look
to
the
city
of
courage
and
champions
at
a
time
when
cities
must
lead
look
to
Boston
the
leader
of
cities.
Thank
you.
God
bless!
You
and
God
bless
the
City
of.
