Description
Hunger is not a problem just facing those in poverty. It's a challenge faced by Boston's working and middle-class neighbors too. On this episode of Commissioners Corner, Host, Lois Leonard, talks with Catalina Lopez-Ospina, Director of the Mayor's Office of Food Access about ways Boston is working to ensure that everyone has access to healthy, nutritious food.
A
Hi
and
welcome
to
commissioner's
corner
I'm,
your
host
Lois
Leonard
and
thanks
for
joining
us
today.
Hunger
is
not
a
problem
just
facing
those
in
poverty.
It's
a
challenge
faced
by
our
working
and
middle-class
neighbors.
The
mayor's
office
of
food
access
wants
everyone
to
have
nutritious
food
and
joining
us
today.
To
help
us
understand
how
Boston
is
rising
to
that
challenge.
Is
their
director,
catalina
lopez,
ospina,
welcome
and
thank
you
for
joining
us
to.
B
A
B
Is
a
big
issue
Louise
and
it's
a
silent
issued
sixteen
point:
six
percent
of
the
Boston
residents.
There
are
food,
insecure
that
mean
they
don't
know
when
the
next
meal
come
from.
That
means
there
are
many
kids
there
go
school
without
have
breakfast
or
have
dinner.
There
are
many
people
going
to
work
and
they
cannot
have
meals
during
the
day,
and
this
is
a
big
issues
for
the
mayor
and
for
our
office
compared.
B
Think,
overall,
in
the
United
States
and
food
insecurity,
young
hunger-
these
are
big
issues.
The
city
of
Boston
has
a
high
number.
Then
we
cannot
say
like
with
food
insecurity,
you
cannot
say
water
is
lower
or
no,
because
even
if
there's
one
person
facing
food
insecurity,
if
there
are
too
many,
maybe.
A
B
Have
healthy
food,
it
is
very
expensive
and
not
everyone
can
afford,
and
people
who
are
facing
food
insecurity
have
to
in
many
occasions
to
face
this
question
of
I
pay,
my
helpful
housing
or
it
I
pay
for
transportation.
I
buy
my
dinner
tonight
and
some
cases
and
most
of
the
cases
people
live
full
as
a
second
choice,
and
this
is
this
is
a
big
thing
that
we
know
that
we
can
have
them
to
do
that
to
in
create
the
buying
power.
B
Silent
nature,
because
no
everyone
is
gonna,
be
proud
to
say:
I
haven't
had
lunch
today.
There
are
a
lot
of
stigmas
about
talk
about
your
problems
and,
and
people
don't
want
to
make
sure
that
go
for
resources
and
say
yes,
I
have
in
the
money
that
I
need
your
help.
Does
it
is
recent
that
in
silence,
we
always
think
that
food
insecurity
and
hunger
is
just
for
people
who
is
loved
income,
but
this
is
across
the
board.
The.
A
Board
yeah
right,
you
mentioned
earlier,
not
just
we're
not
just
talking
about
hunger,
but
we're
also
talking
about
having
nutritious
food
healthy
foods.
So,
whether
we're
discussing
our
well
nourished
children
to
our
vibrant
aging
community,
it
seems
that
this
has
a
direct
correlation
to
a
thriving
City.
Yes,.
B
It
is
and
it's
funny
because
we
had
a
little
conversation
with
our
community
members
and
everyone
who
saying
that
they
don't
have
money
to
buy
food.
They
are
always
talking
about
healthy
food,
just
like.
If
we
have
five
more
dollars
in
our
wallet,
we
will
use
that
money
to
buy
vegetables
and
we
will
use
that
to
buy
fruit,
and
these
are
all
ages
are
asking
for
that
helps
like.
If
we
have
that
money,
that's
what
we
care.
If
we
have,
we
have
the
money
so.
B
Just
like
food
insecurity
is
a
big
issue
for
driving
lives
and
take
care.
Boston,
Food
Bank,
just
I
study
about
the
cause
of
the
food
insecurity
in
the
healthcare
system,
and
they
say
that
all
we're
two
billion
dollars
that
we
are
losing
on
health
just
because
we
are
not
nursing
well,
we
are
not
feeling
well,
our
kids
and
our
residents.
That's.
B
A
lot
of
money
that
we
can
be
using
in
other
programs
like
better
education
and
better
food
programs
and
better
community
organizations,
doing
great
thing
and
the
community
I
mean
that's
the
reason.
Food
insecurity
is
one
of
the
priorities
for
this
administration.
For
me,
ORS
administration,
and
for
our
office
of.
A
B
And
bites
is
a
part
of
the
bigger
program
they
called
Boston.
It
is
a
partnership
between
a
project
Braille,
the
YMCA
aim
and
our
office.
What
we're
trying
to
do
is
fill
this
summer
day
school
gap
meal
I
mean
when
the
kids
are
outside
on
during
the
summer,
and
the
families
rely
on
the
schools
to
feed
those
kids
that
are
missing
that
part
and
in
so
many
cases
they
can
Noah
for
feed
the
kids
and
that's
when
we
are
coming
with
this
program.
They
wasn't
it.
A
B
Because
we
are
not
just
bringing
kids
to
the
library
to
get
em
the
meals
we
are
connecting
them
with
all
the
resources
that
the
core
support.
Libraries
offers
like
a
safety
space
to
be
there,
because
we
know
that
no
all
the
parents
can
pay
for
summer
camp
and
they
need
a
place
to
leave
the
kids
and
the
indication
that
leave
the
kids
at
the
library
and
we
are
trying
to
like
for.
B
A
B
A
B
B
And
all
the
kids
that
are
coming
to
us,
there
will
get
faith,
but
we
are
hoping
the
parents
come
with
the
kids
and
also
because
it's
just
more
than
the
food
that
we
are
providing.
We
are
connecting
them
with
all
the
resources
and
you
cannot
take
yeah.
We
can
only
talk
with
that
three
years.
Okay,
like
these,
are
the
other
places
or
are
you
it's
nap
users
that
is
more
information
than
just
feed?
The
kids,
okay,.
B
Lunch
and
a
line
is
other
vocation
our
day
summer
meal
site.
That
is
a
City
Hall
plaza,
and
we
opened
this
rotation
there,
because
we
are
trying
to
capture
all
the
youth
employees
that
are
working
during
day,
so
my
atom
combustor
and
in
City
Hall-
and
this
is
our
goal.
We
are
aiming
for
them
to
go
there.
So.
B
B
A
B
B
A
B
I
also
enjoy
always
waiting
for,
like
just
so
many
stars,
and
we
won
all
those
onions
be
able
to
shop
there
and
join.
That
is
like
a
great
place
for
the
community,
for
families
for
kids,
and
what
we
are
doing
is
putting
a
lot
of
effort
on
the
old
farmers
market
in
the
postern
area.
They
have
access
to
a
snap.
So
that
means
like
it
snap
it's
a
federal
program
that
is,
they
used
to
be
called
food
stamp,
and
it's
a
supplemental
supplemental.
Oh
you
see
that
the
reason
okay.
B
We're
going
to
treat
you
know
a
system
program
yeah,
nobody
said
this
is
easy,
yeah
and
what
I
mean
is
allowed
to
low
low
income
residents
to
use
their
car
at
the
farmers
market
great
and
buy
fruit
and
vegetables?
We
are
also
supporting
the
hip
program,
that
is
the
health
incentive
program.
There
is
a
statewide
program
that
is
managed
through
the
department
of
transitional
resistant.
B
What
the
program
does
is
they
stretch
the
snap
dollars
at
the
farmers
market
when
the
users
go
there
when
an
abuser
go
there?
The
monitor
is
pain
on
fruit
and
vegetables.
Give
reimburse
in
their
car
I
mean.
Is
that
yep,
until
the
reason
that
we
are
putting
a
lot
of
effort
to
all
farmers
markets
and
all
vendors,
they
are
ready
to
receive
this
knob
car.
Okay,.
B
A
B
The
food
resource
map
is
a
great
tool
for
our
conditions.
It
is
was
designed
by
the
possum
politic
Commission
and
the
do-it
team
in
the
city
of
Boston,
and
what
it
is
is
like
all
the
food
resources
in
the
city
of
Boston
that
are
in
just
one
place
and
they
can
find
farmers
market
they
can
find
where
to
get
free
meals
working
fine
summer
sites,
some
senior
sites
where
they
can
find
help
to
be
part
of
the
SNAP
program
and
yeah.
B
A
B
Copies
and
is
all
the
City
of
Boston.
We
also
have
the
one
pager
that
is
for
neighborhoods,
and
there
are
print
friendly
I
mean
everyone
can
go
to
our
website,
I,
just
I
printed
them,
and
we
have
the
map
in
seven
languages.
That
mean
like
language
is
not
very
here,
and
we
haven't
Portuguese
in
Spanish
in
Chinese,
traditional
Chinese,
in
Vietnamese,
in
Creole,
Haitian,
Creole,
Portuguese,
Creoles
and
in
English
very.
B
B
A
B
Yeah,
it
does
something
that
we
are
very
lucky
dead
mayor.
What
she's
willing
to
do?
He
wants
people
be
part
of
day
of
the
government,
and
this
is
one
of
the
parts
like
we
open.
The
meeting
is
because
we
want
to
hear
from
the
residents
there.
What
are
the
needs?
What
are
the
input
if
you're
our
plan
is
actually
like
fixing
those
needs?
If
you
are
addressing
the
the
right
problems
and
the
council
is
we
convene
the
council
last
year
and
it
is?
We
have
21
members
and
there
are
different
organizations.
A
B
A
B
Have
their
country
fundraising
they've
been
for
many
many
years
in
this
video
person
and
is
in
our
webpage
to
the
money
that
they
put
in
the
grant?
We
are
using
the
money
just
to
support
the
programs
to
support
like
it's.
100
percent
for
funding
for
programs
is
no
any
other
like
publicity
or
administration
costs.
Everything
that
we
receive
is
just
for
funding
programs.
Maybe.
B
I
think
they
know
how
the
mayor,
what
she's
like
thinking
about
the
city
of
Boston
and
his
priorities
for
the
office
of
food
access,
our
priority
is
create
a
very
robust
like
a
kid.
Milk
that
includes
school
meals
include
after-school
meals
include
summer
meals,
because
we
can
now
allow
kids
go
hungry
and
that's
our
priority.
Order
of
the
my
goals
is
that
through
this
office
we
can
increase
people
power
to
buy
the
food.
We
don't
want.
B
B
Fight
against
to
the
fight-
it's
not
a
word,
but
they
support
our
programs.
It's
like
you
know.
We
are
know
that
the
federal
government
is
like
being
very
hard
to
people
in
difficult
situations,
and
we
are
working
really
hard
with
the
mayor
was
to
fight
for
those
resources
that
are
available
and
think
don't
go
away
and.
A
A
We'll
see
