From YouTube: Amazon Building Seaport Square Block L4 Groundbreaking
Description
The Seaport neighborhood continues its growth as a hub for business in Boston. Mayor Walsh and Gov. Charlie Baker celebrate the groundbreaking of Seaport Square Block L4, also known as the Amazon Building. Michael Touloumtzis, Sr. Principal Engineer at Amazon, says the company will deliver 2,000 new jobs in fields such as robotics, digital healthcare, and speech science. The building is expected to be completed in 2021.
A
Good
morning,
thank
you.
My
name
is
Jani
Sipos
and
on
behalf
of
WS
development
and
the
Boston
seaport,
it's
a
pleasure
to
welcome
everybody
here
this
morning.
To
this
great
day,
I
would
like
to
begin
just
by
recognizing
a
few
folks
in
the
audience,
we'd
like
to
start,
of
course,
by
recognizing
our
elected
officials,
Governor
Baker,
mayor
Walsh,
who
you'll
hear
from
in
just
a
few
moments.
A
I
also
like
to
recognize

large
Michael
Flaherty

Boston

Thank
you

very
much
for
taking

out
of
your

to
join

Thank.
A
I'd
like
to
take
a
moment
to
recognize
our
partners
from
city
and
state
government,
you
see
a
number
of

very
much
for
taking
time
to
join
us
and
for
all
your
help
in
bringing
this
endeavor
to
fruition.
A
We'd
also
like
to
recognize
our
community
partners
from
the
four
point:

I'd
like
to
thank
the
skilled
men

women
of
the
Boston
building
trades,
who
were
in
attendance
this
morning,
we're
it
not
for
your
skills
and
dedication.
This
project
would
just
be
lines
on
paper
and
a
vision
and
on
mine.
A
Of
course,
we'd
like
to
thank
the
entire
project

very
much
for
making
this
day
possible.
Thank
you
also,
of
course,
to
our
entire
ws
development
project
team.
A
A
And
then,
lastly,
before
we
begin
our
remarks
in
the
spirit
of
Memorial
Day
and
coming
off,
our
Patriot
Week
activities
here
in
the
Seaport
District
just
like
to
take
a
moment
to
recognize
a
few
specific
team
members
and
thank
them
for
their
service
to
our
country,
city,

our
very
own
Stacy

from

Thank
you
to
all
of
your
theater.
A
What
a
concept
in
this
crazy
world,
sometimes
we
live
in,
but
that
collaborative
spirit
has
been
a
hallmark
both
of
Governor
Baker's
administration
and
Mayor
Walsh's
administration,
and
this
project
is
just
a
small
example
of
what
that
spirit
of
collaboration
of
reaching
across
the
aisle
of
reaching
across
jurisdictional
or
geographic
boundaries
can
accomplish
when
people
work
together.
Today
is
also
about
gratitude.
A
We're
grateful,
of
course,
to
our
partners
at
Amazon
for
having
the
vision
to
embrace
this
neighborhood
to
the
hub
of
the
innovation
economy
in
the
region
to
put
down
roots
for
their
Boston
hub.
We're
very
grateful
for
that.
We're
grateful
to
our
partners
in
city
and
state
government
for
recognizing
the
value
of
and
for
supporting
one
of
the
largest
private
sector,
job
creation
commitments
ever
made
ever
made
in
the
history
of
the
city
of
Boston
or
the
Commonwealth
of
Massachusetts.
That's
a
big
deal.
Thank
you.
A
We're
grateful,
of
course,
to
our
neighbors
and
community
partners
here
in
the
Seaport
neighborhood
from
bracing
us
as
neighbors,
and
for
working
so
collaboratively
with
us
to
craft
a
beautiful
vision
for
the
both
the
built
environment
and
the
public
realm
in
this
very
rapidly
changing
neighborhood.
And
it's
worth
noting
that
the
only
time
in
the
city's
history.
A
The
way
we
did
you
know
50
years
ago,
today's
extraordinary
economic
growth
is
organic,
its
foundational
and
it
nurtures
economic
opportunities
for
all
Bostonians
from
Orient
Heights
to
oak
square,
to
upins
corner
to
right
here
in
the
Seaport,
and
we're
grateful
and
were
humbled
that
this
project
can
play
a
small
part
in
this
growth
by
creating
economic
opportunity
for
all
of
the
citizens
of
Boston.
And,
of
course,
this
unprecedented
growth
is
not
just
changing
the
city
skyline
in
the
buildings
that
we
see
around
us.
A
It's
also
creating
a
new
public
realm
in
our
neighborhoods
and
along
our
coastline.
Unlike
anything,
the
city
has
seen
since
the
time
of
Olmsted
it's
a
bold
statement
but
led
by
mayor
Walsh
in
chief
Chris
Cook
from
the
parks
department.
The
city
has
placed
a
renewed
emphasis
on
the
importance
of
open
space
and
climate
resiliency
in
this
project
is
no
exception.
So
today
we
celebrate
not
only
the
start
of
construction
of
a
new
building.
We
celebrate
the
sowing
of
seeds
for
a
beautiful
new
park
designed
by
James
corner
field
operations
of
Landscape
Architect.
A
We
do
the
Highline
Park
and
in
New
York
and
the
Seattle
Central
Waterfront
Seattle,
which
will
create
a
beautiful
new
acre
and
a
half
public
open
space
in
the
very
heart
of
this
community.
This
new
Park,
which
we
call
Harbour
Square
Park,
will
be
a
hub
of
community
activity
and
will
form
a
beautiful
oasis
in
the
midst
of
the
bustling
city.
All
around
us.
The
new
park
is
also
a
very
important
part.
A
The
entire
Seaport
neighborhood
provide
a
beautiful
and
very
public
access
route
from
the
entire
neighborhood
right
to
the
edge
of
Boston
Harbor,
and
that
that
new
linear
Park
is
every
bit
as
important
as
the
building
itself,
and
so
today,
as
we
celebrate
both
the
built
environment
and
the
public
realm,
we
say
to
each
of
you
and
to
all
of
you.
Thank
you.
Thank
you
for
working
together
to
make
this
happen.
A
A
Thank
you.
We
have
a
brief
speaking
program
I'd
like
to
welcome
Mike
Mike,
to
Lanza's
to
the
stage.
Mike
is
the
Boston
site
leader
for
Amazon
and
Jeremy
and
I
dragged
Mike
down
here
a
couple
of
years
ago,
when
there
was
almost
nothing
here
and
Amazon
was
just
you
know,
just
looking
around
a
little
bit,
and
here
we
are
today
Mike.
Thank
you
very
much
for
joining
us.
B
Thank
you,
honey
and
good
morning.
Everyone.
My
name
is
Michael
Lewis
and
I'm,
a
senior
principal
engineer
and
the
site
lead
of
Amazon's
Boston
tech
hub
on
behalf
of
the
more
than
1,800
Amazonians
building
and
creating
new
products
and
services
for
our
customers
in
the
Greater
Boston
area.
I'm.
Pleased
to
welcome
you
here
today
to
celebrate
the
groundbreaking
of
our
new
office
in
Seaport
I
would
particularly
like
to
recognize
governor
Baker,
mayor
Walsh
and
the
many
community
leaders
for
joining
us
today.
B
During
my
16
years
at
Amazon,
I've
had
the
pleasure
of
seeing
our
business
grow
in
Massachusetts,
so
much
so
that
when
the
opportunity
arose
to
open
our
first
corporate
office
in
Cambridge
here
in
2012,
I
was
excited
to
return
home
and
help
build
our
teams
here
at
Amazon.
We
believe
in
decentralized
innovation
teams
move
fast,
no
matter
where
they
are
to
innovate
and
invent
on
behalf
of
customers.
That's
why
we
have
17
tech
hubs
across
North
America,
with
thousands
of
researchers
and
engineers
experimenting
and
building
new
technologies.
B
Since
we
first
opened
our
Cambridge
office,
we've
seen
tremendous
growth
in
the
Greater
Boston
area,
we've
seen,
teams
from
across
Amazon,
including
Alexa
Amazon,
Web,
Services,
audible
and
more
represented
here
today
by
many
of
our
leaders.
Together
with
our
customer
fulfillment
facilities
in
the
Amazon
robotics
development
center
in
North,
Reading
Amazon
has
created
more
than
4,500
jobs
in
Massachusetts
and
since
2012
invested
over
3.6
billion
dollars
in
this
state,
from
building
infrastructure
to
compensation
to
our
teams.
B
We
estimate
these
investments
have
contributed
an
additional
2.4
billion
dollars
into
the
state's
economy
and
generated
7,000
indirect
jobs
in
Massachusetts,
in
addition
to
the
jobs
we've
created
directly,
but
as
we
like
to
say
at
Amazon,
it's
always
day
one
last
May,
we
were
excited
to
announce
plans
to
expand
our
Boston
tech
hub
and
create
2,000
additional
tech,
jobs
in
fields
including
software
development,
machine
learning,
speech,
science
and
cloud
computing
and
with
all
these
future
hires,
we
need
the
space
to
grow.
With
this
new
office,
Amazon
will
be
adding
four
hundred.
B
B
Amazon
is
investing
in
Massachusetts
in
the
Greater
Boston
area
because
of
the
exceptionally
talented
workforce
that
exists
here,
but
talent
alone
will
not
enable
us
to
continue
to
grow.
Since
our
first
day,
we've
received
strong
support
from
the
community
and
we
are
proud
to
partner
with
a
number
of
organizations
to
make
sure
our
investments
benefit
not
only
our
employees
but
also
the
wider
community
and
the
local
economy.
At
Amazon.
B
We
are
committed
to
ensuring
all
children
and
young
adults,
especially
those
from
underrepresented,
underrepresented
and
underserved
communities,
where
we
have
a
presence,
have
the
resources
and
skills
to
build
their
best
future.
We
focus
on
building
long-term
and
innovative
programs
that
have
a
lasting
positive
impact
in
towns
and
cities
around
the
world.
Our
goals
include
helping
more
young
people
from
underrepresented
backgrounds,
build
successful
careers
in
computer
science,
creating
a
positive
learning
environment
by
addressing
immediate
needs
such
as
family,
hunger
and
homelessness,
and
serving
communities
in
need
following
natural
disasters
in
the
US
and
around
the
world.
B
Here
in
Massachusetts
we
are
funding
intro
and
ap
computer
science
courses
in
more
than
35
high
schools
across
the
state
is
part
of
our
Amazon
future
engineer
program
and
dozens
of
young
students
are
taking
Amazon
future
engineer,
funded
after-school
coding
programs
we're
also
incredibly
proud
to
support
st.
Mary's
Centre
for
women
and
children,
a
leader
in
supporting
families
in
empowering
women
experiencing
homelessness
in
the
Boston
area.
Each
year,
st.
Mary's
Center
supports
more
than
700
women
and
children
through
emergency
shelter,
job
and
employment,
training
and
educational,
clinical
and
preventive
services.
B
When
we
began
our
partnership
with
st.
Mary's
Center
Amazon
pledged
to
match
up
to
1
million
dollars
to
double
the
impact
of
community
donations,
to
help
fund
a
new
Community
Resource
Center
on
its
Dorchester
campus,
which
supports
families
transitioning
to
permanent
housing
and
those
on
the
brink
of
homelessness.
After
reaching
this
milestone
and
continuing
to
be
inspired
by
the
work
done
by
the
incredible
staff
and
volunteers
at
st.
Mary's
Center,
we
are
pleased
to
announce
that
st.
B
B
Thank
you
for
your
team's
leadership
and
commitment
in
this
area
and
we're
grateful.
You
could
join
us
today
on
behalf
of
Amazon
I
want
to
thank
you
all
for
coming.
We
look
forward
to
continuing
to
grow
our
presence
here
through
our
employees,
our
community
relationships.
Most
importantly,
our
customers.
A
Thank
you
very
much
Mike.
Thank
you
for
your
remarks.
I
would
now
like
to
welcome
Governor
Baker
to
the
podium.
A
governor
Baker
has
been
a
terrific
partner
of
this
project
since
day.
One
the
governor
understands
that
the
economic
impact
and
the
economic
benefits
of
development
projects
like
this
I
felt
all
across
the
Commonwealth
from
provincetown
at
Pittsfield
and
Newburyport
to
New,
Bedford
and
governor
has
always
had
that
as
a
pillar
of
his
administration
so
governor.
We
are
very
grateful
to
have
you
here
and
about
you
to
say
a
few
words.
Thank
you.
C
C
One
of
the
things
we
try
really
hard
to
do
with
our
mass
works
program
is
to
make
sure
we
get
at
least
a
10
to
one
return
on
the
dollars
that
we
invest
and,
in
this
particular
case,
almost
everything
yeah.
Everything
that
we're
putting
into
this
project
relates
to
transportation
betterments.
That
will
certainly
enhance
the
nature
of
this
project,
but
will
also
provide
public
benefits
to
everybody
who
works
or
who
lives
or
who
accesses
transportation
or
who
gets
in
and
out
of
here,
either
publicly
or
privately.
C
As
a
result
of
that
particular
initiative
and
I
think
in
some
ways
that's
a
big
statement
about
WS,
but
it's
also
a
big
statement
about
Amazon
and
a
big
statement
about
the
city
that
everybody
was
able
to
work
together
to
figure
out
a
way
to
basically
close.
This
deal
and
the
the
other
thing
I'll
say
Mike
is
I,
really
appreciated
your
comments
about
the
quality
of
the
people
here
in
the
Commonwealth.
C
That
is
also
a
big
statement
of
the
year
making
about
the
quality
of
the
people
who
make
up
this
great
city
in
this
great
state,
and
the
final
thing
I'll
say
is
how
much
we
appreciate
our
partnership
and
our
relationship
with
the
city
on
so
many
initiatives.
Not
just
undeveloped
meant
initiatives
which
are
the
ones
that
seem
to
get
the
most
attention
because
they
have
the
most
shovels
and
the
biggest
piles
of
dirt,
but
on
so
many
other
issues
that
have
to
do
with
community
building
and
Community
Development.
C
The
city
of
Boston
has
been
a
terrific
partner
and
the
folks
on
the
mayor's
team
have
been
terrific
partners
with
our
team
in
so
many
areas
of
opportunity,
and
we
look
forward
to
continuing
to
build
on
that
relationship.
We
look
forward
to
seeing
this
project
get
completed
and
we
especially
look
forward
to
the
continued
growth
and
investment
of
Amazon
here
in
the
Commonwealth
and
in
the
city
of
Boston.
Thank
you.
A
Thank
you
very
much
governor
I'd,
like
now
to
invite
mayor
Walsh
to
join
us
on
the
stage
as
everybody
in
this
room
knows.
Mayor
Walsh.
Since
the
day
one
of
his
administration
has
been
a
real
champion
for
balanced
and
responsible
economic
development
across
the
entire
city
and
the
mayor's
shown
a
real
recognition
and
understanding
that
these
projects
aren't
just
about
construction
they're
about
helping
people.
A
D
Let
me
first
of
all
thank
you,
Ani
and
Thank
You
Jeremy
for
a
conversation
we
had
a
long
time
ago
about
this
project,
and
so
many
more
you
here
today
to
a
beautiful
day,
Bruins
won
last
night,
Rupp
one
game
to
none
and
the
standing
clap.
So
we
have
nothing
to
complain
about
to
Mike
in
your
team
at
Amazon.
Thank
you
for
being
an
incredible
partner
here
in
the
city.
Already
your
support
of
st.
D
Mary's
and
other
great
organizations,
I,
truly
appreciate
and
I
look
forward
to,
as
we
continue
to
move
forward
here,
see
elected
officials
that
are
all
here
I'll.
Thank
you
for
what
you
do:
Bryan
gold
and
the
staff
of
the
BPD,
a
and
John
Burroughs
and
his
team
at
Economic
Development
and
all
the
city
and
state
working
collaboratively
together.
It
is
about
a
partnership.
As
you
all
know,
the
governor
myself
went
down
in
Washington
a
couple
weeks
ago
to
talk
about
infrastructure
money.
It's
about
collaboration,
it's
about
moving
forward!
It's
about
having!
D
If
you
have
differences,
don't
eat
at
the
mountain
public,
get
them
up
behind
the
scenes
and
get
to
will
get
to.
Yes
and
that's
what
we're
trying
to
do
here
in
the
city
and
certainly
with
the
state
as
well,
and
to
all
of
us
all
the
electors
in
all
of
us
today,
thank
you
to
the
building
trades,
men
and
women,
the
building
trades
they're
gonna
be
on
this
project.
This
is
a
great
project,
as
you
know,
and
I
want
to
thank
you
for
your
hard
work.
We
have.
D
D
We
need
to
make
sure
that
every
Bostonian
benefits
from
the
growth
and
be
part
of
our
global
leadership.
Jonnie
talked
about
that
this
gener.
This
project
here
generates
about
4.4
million
dollars
in
new,
affordable
housing,
money
for
affordable
housing
in
the
City
of
Austin,
eight
hundred
and
seventy
five
thousand
dollars
for
job
training.
It's
important
that
we
continue
as
we
as
we
build
these
projects.
People
just
see
a
building
going
up
and
they
see
a
company
going
in
there.
D
They
don't
realize
the
other
benefits
that
come
from
projects
like
this
and
those
those
benefits
certainly
are
very
big
and
very
important
to
to
our
city
and
other
cities
across
America.
In
my
state
of
the
city,
we
announce
that
we're
working
with
the
Amazon
to
use
funding
for
programs
to
prepare
residents
for
technological
sector
jobs
for
this
for
the
first
time
we're
matching
job
training
funds
to
these
kinds
of
jobs.
So
what
we're
not
just
training
people
with
putting
people
together
and
creating
these
opportunities
for
these
jobs
to
be
able
to
move
forward.
D
That
means
jobs
in
this.
In
this
building
that
we're
building
behind
us,
there
will
be
kids
that
are
working
or
young
people
that
are
working
in
our
city
right
now,
going
to
school,
they'll
be
working
in
these
jobs
behind
this,
so
these
troops
trained
in
skills
that
we'll
be
able
to
handle
these
jobs
and
that's
important.
This
is
a
new
level
of
connection
that
we're
working
on
to
replicate
when
we're
going
to
do
this
in
other
developments
across
the
city
of
Boston.
D
It's
important
it's
important
as
we
become
as
Boston,
becomes
a
global
techno
technology
hub
that
our
residents
benefit
from
these
opportunities.
The
governor
talked
a
little
bit
about
giving
back.
We
do
have
a
tax
agreement
on
that
made.
This
project
possible,
it's
transparent,
it
benefits
the
city
residents
and
it
guarantees
a
net
positive
for
the
taxpayer
and
that's
something
that's
also
important
that
you
can
do.
You
can
do
tax
agreements
that
are
beneficial
to
everybody
and
it's
important
that
we
continue
to
do
that.
D
It's
important
to
understand
on
the
top
of
the
benefits
I
mentioned
already.
This
building
will
produce
new
tax
revenues
for
the
city.
This
revenue
will
help
us
find
a
universal
pre-kindergarten
program
that
closes
opportunity,
gaps
for
all
of
our
young
people
as
an
Economic,
Development
Center
as
well,
that
helps
close
gaps
in
business
ownership
across
the
city
of
Boston.
The
growth
of
companies
like
Amazon,
our
city
will
bring
more
innovation,
more
investment
and
more
revenue
that
we
certainly
value.
D
So
this
is
going
to
help
us
grow
inclusive
growth,
so
this
project
is
one
of
those
projects.
As
we
talked
about
a
lot.
How
do
you?
How
does
everyone
benefit
from
a
project?
Well
today,
as
we
break
grounds
here
and
this
project,
this
project
benefits
everyone
in
the
city
of
Boston
I
want
to
thank
my
partners
and
see
gum.
Council
McCarthy
counts,
the
clarity,
Flynn
represented
cons
and
all
the
other
councillors
and
elected
officials
that
have
worked
together
today.
So
thank
you
very
much.
Eonni!
Congratulations
on
another
fraud.
Well
done!
A
Thank
You
mayor
just
to
close
our
proceeding
today,
we
wanted
to
do
something
a
little
bit
different
than
the
typical
couple
of
folks.
Turning
a
spade
full
of
earth.
We
will
have
time
for
that
afterwards
and
everybody
everybody
is
invited
after
our
big
moment,
to
come
and
turn
a
spade
full
of
Earth
and
have
the
picture
taken.
But
for
today
we
wanted
to
do
something
different.
That
was
a
little
more
participatory
for
everybody
in
the
room,
the
tent.
So
everybody
has
this
shiny.
A
Stick
it's
full
of
confetti
and
we're
gonna
do
a
little
count
on
it's
all.
It's
biodegradable
so
no
worries
about
sustainability.
Here,
it's
full
of
confetti
we're
going
to
do
a
little
countdown,
three,
two
one
seaport,
and
when
we
say
when
we
hit
seaport,
please
flick
the
stick
and
we'll
have
a
big
pop
of
confetti.
All
right,
ready,
everybody!
Okay,
three
two
one
see
boy.
