From YouTube: Northeastern University Burke Dorm Topping-Off Ceremony
Description
Upon its delivery in Fall 2019, Northeastern University's $153.4 million Burke Dorm Community will be located in a premier location pedestrian to Northeastern's campus core. The community will feature nearly 12,000 square feet of interior amenity and common area space, including social and recreational lounges, a state-of-the-art fitness center, Academic Success Center, and 2,200 square feet of vibrant retail.
Speakers include American Campus Communities Chief Marketing Officer Jason Wills, ACC CEO Bill Bayless, Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun, and Boston City Mayor Marty Walsh.
A
A
So,
as
everyone
is
taking
their
seat,
I
would
like
to
go
ahead
and
begin
the
program.
First
of
all,
on
behalf
of
American
campus
communities,
Northeastern
University
and
the
Columbus
Avenue
student
apartments.
I
would
like
to
welcome
and
thank
each
and
every
one
of
you
for
coming
today.
I,
don't
know
if
you've
figured
it
out
yet,
but
the
closer
you
sit
the
cooler
it
is
and
as
you
go
back
toward
the
back,
that's
where
you
get
the
sauna
effect
so,
depending
on
how
you're
dressed
you
can
gauge
where
you
want
to
be
in
the
room.
A
Secondly,
I
would
like
to
acknowledge
why
we're
actually
here
today
there
has
been
some
astonishing
work
on
this
building
by
boss,
Steele
and
the
local
seven
are
Jill
and
Bryan
Benson
here
we'd
like
to
thank
them
for
this
fantastic
work
and-
and
what's
amazing
to
me
is
we
have
construction
on
time.
I've
heard
we
may
even
have
a
few
days
we're
ahead
in
one
of
the
most
intensive
Boston
construction
environments
in
the
last
decade,
and
that's
quite
an
accomplishment.
Can
we
go
ahead
and
give
those
folks
a
hand,
applause.
A
On
your
way
out,
I
would
like
to
ask
that
each
and
every
one
of
you
join
us
in
celebrating
this
moment
by
signing
the
steel
beam
we
have
at
the
entry
it's
going
to
be
memorialized
in
the
building
and
please
just
take
a
moment
to
write
your
name
and
on
the
way
out
and
and
be
a
part
of
this
event
we're
we're
so
proud
of
this
partnership.
I
want
to
take
just
a
moment
to
talk
about
it.
A
This
has
culminated
in
what
is
the
first
on-campus
privately
funded
student
apartment
community,
not
just
in
the
city
of
Boston,
but
also
in
the
state
of
Massachusetts
and
hopefully
one
of
many
more
to
come.
It
takes
a
very
robust
and
comprehensive
team
to
make
a
project
come
out
of
of
this
type
of
work.
In
this
case,
it
took
two
great
architects
to
design
such
a
beautiful
iconic
build
and
those
architects
are
cube,
3
and
Elka's
Manfredi
architects,
and
they
are
joined
by
the
fine
collaborative
building
group
of
John
Moriarty
and
associates.
A
A
Secondly,
I'd
like
to
offer
our
appreciation
for
Gerald
atler
and
the
amazing
team
at
the
BD
PA.
It's
it's
been
such
a
service-oriented
process
and
a
very
collaborative
relationship
and
candidly
it
was.
It
wasn't
expected
to
be
that
way.
We
we
got
through
the
process
and
we
were
just
so
pleased
and
and
and
it's
it's
it
makes
us
excited
about
where
this
building's
going.
I'd
also
like
to
thank
I,
don't
know
if
we
have
any
folks
here
from
the
BR
a
task
force.
A
I
do
know
that
we
have
neighborhood
liaison
Joshua
McFadden
here,
but
everyone
who
was
a
part
of
weighing
in
and
spending
time
and
talking
about
how
this
building
was
going
to
integrate
into
the
community.
Thank
you
so
much
for
that
process
and
and
I
would
I
would
like
to
talk
about
partnership,
because
the
the
partnership
that
we
see
here
goes
far
beyond
northeastern
and
American
campus.
We
began
with
outreach
with
listening
to
the
students
through
focus
groups
through
planning
sessions.
Through
surveys,
we
listened
to
the
University
in
the
city.
A
To
that
extent,
as
American
campus
begins
to
celebrate
its
25th
anniversary,
I
want
to
to
turn
the
microphone
over
to
our
founder
and
CEO.
Bill,
Bayliss
and
I.
Think
the
most
important
introduction
I
can
offer
bill
is
that
he
began
many
many
moons
ago
as
an
RA
in
college
in
his
his
college
residence
hall,
and
he
met
the
love
of
his
life
in
the
laundry
room
of
that
building.
And
so
you
have
a
believer
in
the
magic
of
student
communities
and
on
campus
environments.
Bill
Bayless.
B
Thank
you,
Jason
mayor
Walsh,
president
moon.
What
a
pleasure
to
be
here
with
all
of
you.
We
start
American
campus
25
years
ago
this
actually
in
August
of
this
year
with
four
employees
and
one
student
housing
management
contract
and
a
vision
to
be
the
world's
premier
student
housing
company.
25
years
later,
we
have
the
good
fortune
of
housing.
B
130,000
students
across
America,
92
campuses
and
I,
will
tell
you
the
first
place
that
I
went
after
forming
American
campus
in
1993
is
I
came
here
for
three
days
in
1994
and
I
toured
all
of
Boston,
because
obviously
the
need
for
student
housing
here
is
perhaps
greater
than
any
city
in
America
and
as
an
organization
we
build
all
over
the
country,
but
never
were
able
to
quite
bring
a
transaction
together
here
in
the
city
and
Mayor
Walsh.
I
want
to
thank
you,
because
it
was
your
2014
initiative
on
housing,
a
changing,
City
2030.
B
There
really
opened
the
door
for
all
of
this
and
enabled
companies
like
American
campus
to
come
here
and
to
make
investment
in
this
city
and
to
help
alleviate
the
need
for
student
housing
and
thus
alleviate
and
open
the
housing
for
the
workforce
and
the
rest
of
the
community,
and
so
this
is
truly
a
partnership
where
the
university,
the
city
and
the
private
sector
can
come
together
to
really
accomplish
something
special
for
the
people.
The
community
I
love
being
here
in
today's
a
celebration.
B
B
We
worked
with
the
best
we
have
ever
worked
with
all
over
America
and
so
I
especially
want
to
thank
from
president
staff,
Kathy
Spiegelman
thomna
del
Ralph,
Martin,
Mari,
Nikki,
marina,
Macomber,
John,
Tobin
and
Mike
Glover.
They
worked
tirelessly
and
I
will
tell
you.
This
transaction
at
every
pace,
moved
at
the
speed
of
light
because
of
the
collaboration
and
motivation
of
everybody
involved.
So
on
behalf
of
American
campus
and
our
entire
team,
we
want
to
thank
you
first
for
selecting
us
as
your
partner
here
at
Northeastern,
Mayor
Walsh.
B
A
So,
approximately
two
years
ago
we
sat
down
with
Mayor
Walsh
and
and
had
this
vision
for
a
building
and
a
community.
We
were
shocked
at
the
support
and
and
the
responsiveness
that
we
received
from
the
city
and,
as
I
mentioned
earlier,
that
that
began
at
the
top
and
it
worked
its
way
down
through
the
staff.
So
I
I
want
to
join
everyone
in
thanking
Mayor,
Walsh
and
and
let's
let's
let
him
come
up
and
and
speak
to
the
project.
C
Thank
you
very
much
Jason
and
thank
you
for
your
investments
here.
I
want
to
thank
you
Bill
as
well
for
your
investments
here.
It's
in
some
ways,
as
you
talked
about
being
here
in
1994,
and
it
didn't
happen
for
you
I
actually
kind
of
glad
it
didn't
happen
because
we
can
be
the
first
there's.
Not
many
first
left
so
I
want
to
thank
you
for
that.
So
we're
excited
about
that.
C
So
thank
you
and
in
American
campus
for
all
of
your
great
investments
here
and
look
forward
to
working
with
one
more
I
want
to
thank
President,
Wong
I'm,
going
to
talk
about
you
a
few
more
in
a
few
more
minutes.
I
want
to
thank
shield.
Dillon
I'm
gonna
talk
about
chill
in
a
few
minutes
as
well
everyone
at
the
BP
da
and
know
if
anyone's
here
from
the
BP
da.
C
But
thank
you
for
your
process
too,
because
this
is
the
first
time
that
we
we
start
to
look
at
somebody
else,
building
a
dorm
and
not
necessarily
a
university,
so
we
lose
new
ground
we
broke
out.
So
I
want
to
thank
the
BBVA
as
bill
said
and
I
love.
Hearing
him
talk
about
it
being
excited
about
a
building
like
this
I
certainly
get
excited
about
a
building
like
this,
because
I
know
it's
about
growth,
but
it's
also
about
the
people
that
work
on
this
project.
C
I
raised
a
family
and
earning
a
living,
and
my
father
did
it
for
40
years
as
a
laborer
in
223
I
did
it
for
a
little
bit
and
then
I
went
to
work
for
the
Health
and
Welfare
Fund,
and
my
family
works
on
projects
like
this
all
the
time.
So
I
want
to
give
a
big
shout
out
to
the
men
and
women
of
the
building
trades
that
are
here
today.
All
the
locals.
B
C
Know
today
is
a
big
day,
particularly
for
local
17
iron
workers
and
it's
the
biggest
API
Workers.
Unless
you
ask
the
operator
engineers
they're
going
to
say
well,
how
does
the
beam
get
up
to
the
top
of
the
building
and
they're
gonna?
Tell
you
it's
the
biggest
day
for
them
and
I'm,
not
sure,
quite
sure
how
the
laborers
and
carpenters
and
everyone
else
gonna
figure
out
how
it's
a
big
day
for
them.
But
we
know
it's
a
big
day
on
a
project,
so
I
want
to.
Thank
you.
C
I
want
to
thank
Northeastern
University
for
making
a
major
investment
in
quality
student
housing,
153
million
dollars.
This
is
where
students
are
gonna,
find
the
supports
and
the
amenities
they
need
to
live
and
thrive.
Often
a
lot
of
young
people
come
to
our
city
to
college.
They
come
to
a
place,
are
they're
going
to
be
able
to
come
to
a
beautiful
building
and
really
getting
a
beautiful
living
experience,
but
on
top
of
that,
what's
even
more
important.
C
It's
where
the
people
of
tomorrow,
the
jobs
of
tomorrow,
going
to
be
filled
with
engineers
and
artists
and
policy
makers
that
make
the
kind
of
community
that
we
have
here
in
Boston,
a
great
community,
a
great
college
town.
Just
as
importantly,
it's
the
big
step
forward
for
our
city,
white
housing
goals
and
Bill
and
Jason
I
want
to
thank
you
for
giving
me
credit
for
that.
But
the
woman
who
put
that
plan
together,
she
loved
Dylan
and
she
did
the
head
of
our
housing
in
the
city
of
Boston
Chief
of
Housing,
and
we
looked
at.
C
How
do
we
create
more
opportunities
for
low-income
housing
in
the
city?
How
do
we
create
more
opportunities
for
middle-income
housing
in
the
city
we
looked
at?
How
do
we
create
more
opportunities
for
senior
housing
in
the
city
and
one
of
the
things
that
sometimes
doesn't
get
talked
about
enough
about?
Is
that
is
the
dormitory
housing
in
the
city
of
Boston
and
and
pushing
the
need
for
16,000
new
undergraduate
beds
in
the
city
of
Boston?
C
We
in
a
meeting
at
department
house
I
think
it
was
three
years
ago
where
we
called
on
all
our
colleges
to
to
build
more
housing
and
talking
about
more
housing.
Northeastern
Rose
has
risen
to
the
occasion.
As
you
heard,
this
is
the
first
project
that
is
it
that
is
part
of
this
new
mechanism
as
far
as
building
housing,
but
it's
also
the
first
project
to
be
in
construction.
C
Since
we
announced
the
housing
plan
of
building
new
dorms
825
new
beds
will
help
alleviate
housing
pressures
in
areas
like
Roxbury
Mission,
Hill
Fenway
in
the
south
end,
it's
going
to
open
up
more
of
units
for
other
families
to
be
able
to
stay
in
those
neighborhoods,
and
this
is
a
great
example
of
using
scarce
urban
lands
to
build
more
efficient
housing
for
our
students.
So
I'm
excited
about
that.
This
project
is
ahead
of
pace,
so
I'm
excited
about
that
as
well.
C
So
when
you
get
the
likes
of
GE
and
Amazon,
and
in
vertex
and
other
companies
like
that,
why
they
want
say
they
want
to
come
to
Boston
it's
because
they
look
at
what
we're
producing
here
and
they
look
at
what
the
universities
are
producing.
So
again,
I
want
to
thank
the
this
University
for
their
great
work.
I
want
to
thank
them
for
all
of
they
do
again.
Thank
you.
American
campus
communities.
Take
the
design
teams
thanks,
John
Moriarty,
the
construction
construction
company,
one
of
the
best
John,
does
incredible
work
and
his
team
does
incredible
work.
C
How
do
we
continue
to
move
forward?
How
do
we
continue
partnerships,
so
we
continue
to
do
want
to
do.
We
see
a
lot.
You
see
a
lot
on
the
outward
side
of
the
university
with
the
with
the
people
going
to
school
here
in
the
graduations.
You
see
that,
but
you
don't.
Everyone
doesn't
always
see
behind
the
scenes
stuff
that
the
president
does
and
that
this
university
does
for
people
in
the
city
of
Boston
in
the
Commonwealth
of
Massachusetts.
It's
the
quiet
things
that
get
my
attention.
It's.
C
The
understanding
of
the
importance
of
the
success
of
the
city
of
Boston
depends
upon
the
success
of
Northeast
and
the
success
of
Northeast
and
depends
upon
the
success
of
the
city
of
Boston.
This
is
a
partnership
and
it's
my
honor
to
introduce
you,
my
dear
friend
and
my
partner
in
this,
the
president
of
Northeastern
University,
president
Ione.
D
Thank
You
mayor,
thank
you
for
this
very
generous
introduction
and
very
generous
remarks.
Let
me
mention
something.
First
of
all,
I'm
very
happy
that
we
are
here
today,
I'm
also
a
little
bit
unhappy,
and
let
me
tell
you
why
my
office
is
next
door.
I
lost
my
views,
I
lost
my
privacy
and
I'm,
asking
Jason
and
Bill
to
give
me
a
floor
here,
if
possible,
so
I'm
moving
here
mayor.
That's,
why
shall
I
do
that?
So,
once
again,
I
would
like
to
thank
everybody
who
contributed
to
this
great
building
and
to
this
great
project.
D
This
project
didn't
happen
by
itself.
You
heard
that
we
thank
many
of
you
here.
Young
people
who
the
people
who
really
built
it
and
I,
see
that
some
of
you
have
a
northeastern
t-shirt.
So
you
went
you
and
you
came
here
all
your
sons
and
daughters
came
here.
So
thank
you
for
doing
that
for
your
family
to
a
new
part
of
the
family.
I
would
like
to
mention
that
this
is
a
dream
that
came
true
because
of
my
wall.
This
is
the
first
in
Boston.
D
You
heard
from
bill
that
in
1994
you
scouted
the
city
and
you
tried
I
know
that
you
try
to
do
it,
you
try
to
make
it
happen
and
the
fact
that
it
is
now
a
reality
is
because
of
the
mayor's
vision
from
the
get-go.
He
asked
us
to
work
on
how
to
work
on
housing
and
he
asked
us
to
be
creative
about
it,
innovative
to
work
with
the
community,
and
we
went
back
to
him.
We
offered
this
proposal
and
he
signed
off.
He
was
excited
and
he
pushed
us
to
do
it.
D
D
Mayor
since
I
asked
to
move
here,
if
you
want
to
move
here
with
me,
you
know
we
may
be
together,
and
but
this
is
a
project
that
is
dear
to
us.
It's
a
first
in
Boston,
first
in
the
Commonwealth
as
bill
and
Jason
mentioned
and
I
have
to
say
the
first
time
I
met
you
Jason,
I,
didn't
know
whether
you
were
a
student
or
you
were
working
on
behalf
of
the
of
American
campus
community,
yes
bill.
How
long
have
you
been
with
him
and
he
told
me
22
years
and
how
old
are
you
now?
D
Well,
you
don't
need
to
answer.
You
don't
need
to
answer
yeah,
but
let
me
close
with
the
community.
The
community
here
around
us
with
us
has
built
it.
As
the
mayor
said,
as
bill
mentioned,
we
said
adjacent
mentioned.
We
sat
down
with
the
community
and,
as
you
know,
this
is
not
an
isolated
project.
This
is
a
project
that
is
opening
our
community,
our
university
to
innovation,
to
education,
to
jobs,
and
that's
why
we
are
very
happy.
D
A
All
right,
Thank,
You,
mayor
Thank,
You
president,
as
we
close
since
we
had
some
folks
who
have
recently
showed
up
I,
want
to
once
again
thank
the
folks
of
boss,
Steele
and
local
7.
We
cannot
appreciate
where
we
are
today
enough
and
we
do
have
John
Moriarty
here
John.
Thank
you
very
much.
Can
we
give
everyone
a
great
round
of
applause.
