Description
Renovations are coming to Sociedad Latina in Mission Hill thanks to the Community Preservation Act! Mayor Walsh joins Chief of Economic Development John Barros, Sociedad Latina Executive Director Alex Oliver-Davila, Mayor of Easthampton Nicole LaChapelle, other elected officials and members of the Mission Hill community to celebrate the CPA funding that will help update the Sociedad Latina Community Center, which has been serving Boston youth for over 50 years.
A
A
A
We
are
absolutely
thrilled
that
the
House
budget
includes
an
increase
for
the
CPA
match,
bringing
more
funds
to
Boston
CPA
communities
across
the
state
for
affordable
housing,
affordable
housing,
make
some
noise
and
parks
and
open
space
and
I
a
huge
thank
you
to
ways
and
means
chair,
chair,
Michael,
wits
and
speaker
DeLeo
for
the
recognition
of
CPA
and
the
impact
it's
making
the
Commonwealth,
especially
Boston.
We
are
very
excited
to
be
here
today
celebrating
Sociedad
latina.
A
recent
CPA
awardee
Sociedad
will
be
able
to
continue
its
wonderful
work
with
young
people.
A
5,000
5,000
give
yourselves
a
round
of
applause.
5,000
kids
made
better
by
Sociedad
latina,
because
cpa
funds
will
help
them
restore
their
historic
building
bought
last
year
and
guaranteeing
them
a
permanent
home
here
in
Mission
Hill.
We're
gonna
hear
right
from
Sociedad
latina
right
off
the
bat.
Please
give
a
nice
warm
welcome
for
shine
among
gay
Quinto,
Sociedad
latina,
Alumni,
speaker
who's
gonna.
Welcome
us
to
Mission
Hill.
C
Thank
you.
Thank
you.
Thank
you
on
behalf
of
all
social,
a
Latina,
youth
and
families.
I
would
like
to
thank
mayor
Walsh
and
the
Community
Preservation
Committee
for
the
generous
award
in
support
of
the
renovation
of
1533
month.
Street
sociality
now
will
always
be
my
second
home
I
grew
up
in
Mission
Hill,
and
everyone
in
my
family
has
been
involved
in
social,
a
Latina
one
way
or
another
and
I
think
I
have
a
few
family
members
here,
somewhere
over
the
years,
I've
been
part
of
many
programs.
C
C
Salsa
la
latina
has
always
been
there
for
me
for
guidance
and
support,
whether
it's
figuring
out
my
next
move
or
helping
my
family
to
a
difficult
time.
I
remember
when
sociality
and
I
started
working
to
find
a
permanent
home
for
the
organization.
Several
years
ago,
when
the
Mission
Hill
Neighborhood,
Housing
Services,
was
planning
the
redevelopment
of
parcel
25,
even
though,
in
the
end,
the
space
was
used
for
another
important
community
resources,
and
so
social
a
latina
knew
that
they
needed
somewhere.
That
was
a
sign
for
their
programs.
C
We
will
be
able
to
transform
transform
this
amazing
space
for
youth
and
families
like
mine
for
many
years
to
come
with
the
funding
from
the
CPA.
They
will
be
able
to
make
sure
that
the
historic
and
cultural
features
of
the
building
are
preserved
for
the
benefit
to
benefit
the
entire
community.
They
will
also
reimage
the
interior
to
reflect
youth
voice
and
Latino
cultures.
So
today,
latina
youths
who
are
all
here
with
purple
shirts
raise
your
hand
to
associate
a
youth.
C
Amba
Timothy
raise
your
hand.
Kids
from
the
Timothy
from
our
steam
program,
played
a
big
role
in
the
revision
of
1530
Tremont
streets.
Their
ideas
include
having
cutting-edge
technology
throughout
the
building.
They
also
wanted
to
have
a
space
that
is
open
and
flexible
so
that
they
could
work
on
many
different
types
of
activities
and
projects
personally
I'm
most
excited
about
the
changes
in
the
first
floor,
a
brand
new
music
studio,
dance
and
theater
area
that
will
host
community
performance
and
allow
you
to
truly
express
themselves
I
plan
to
bring
my
daughter.
C
So
all
these
performances
and
enroll
her
in
Essos
Saturday
classes,
so
that
she
can
be
so
that
she
can
build
a
creative
mind
to
one
day
hope
her
community
and
I
hope
that
she
one
day
join
social.
A
Latina
programs,
herself
I,
hope
you'll
join
us
as
we
continue
this
journey
of
renovating
our
building,
enhancing
our
programs
and
bring
communities
together.
Thank
you
again
to
our
mayor,
mr.
Walsh,
for
for
being
here
today
and
for
supporting
social,
a
latina
and
Boston
Latino
communities.
Now
it's
my
pleasure
and
honor
to
have
our
mayor.
D
Thank
you
very
much
Naya.
Thank
you
for
a
great
speech.
Thank
you
for
what
you
do
every
day.
I
want
to
take
all
the
youth
here
from
Mission
Hill
and
from
the
Latino
community
and
from
Mission
Grammar
School
from
the
Tim
LT
from
Sochi
Dada
latina.
Any
other
schools
that
I
missed
I
want
to
thank
you
for
being
here,
because
it
is
all
about
you
guys.
D
I
want
to
take
my
friend
Alex,
who
is
the
director
who
is
somebody
when
I
walked
in
the
building
a
couple
years
ago,
Alex
had
a
vision,
and
she
said
to
me
that
my
vision,
my
goal,
my
hope,
is
that
someday
I'll
own
the
building
and
that
will
renovate
the
building
and
two
years
later
she
owns
the
building
and
she's
in
the
process
of
renovating
the
building.
So
I
want
to
congratulate
you
on
that
and
then,
with
all
of
that,
going
on
she's.
Also
vice
chair
of
the
School
Committee
and
she's
been
really
busy.
D
D
We
have
the
mayor
of
East
Hampton
okhla
coal
ash
Appel
we
have
before
I
was
before
I
was
the
mayor.
I
was
a
state
rep,
but
I
was
also
had
in
the
building
trades
and
when
I
left
there
was
young
men
that
took
over
after
me
and
he's
doing
an
amazing
job
he's
hard
as
as
big
as
the
City
of
Boston,
and
this
Brian
Doherty
I
want
to
thank
Kristine
Poff,
the
head
of
the
CPA
director.
D
I
could
go
chill
it
from
this
from
the
c-team
Sheila
Dillon,
cheaper
housing
choice,
Lenihan,
chief
of
policy,
John
barrows,
chief
economic
development,
Tony
barrows,
chief
in
Jamaica,
Plain
Len.
Thank
you
for
that.
I
want
to
thank
all
the
advocates
for
the
for
the
historic
preservation,
affordable,
housing
and
open
space
and
everyone
who's
working
to
make
our
neighborhood
stronger.
Fighting
the
Ducie,
I
love
you
and
we'll
get
to
you
at
some
point.
Today.
D
I
just
had
a
chance
again
to
visit
the
tour
around
the
building
and
and
see
what
the
vision
in
that
building
is,
and
after
after
the
renovation,
it's
a
game.
Changer
the
pro-social
I
did
latina
has
done
incredible
work
with
the
space
they
have
and
the
space
wasn't
designed
for
young
people.
The
space
is
designed
for
offices.
D
The
space
was
laid
out,
probably
for
a
house
at
one
point
back
in
the
day
and
after
the
renovation
is
done,
it's
gonna
be
incredible
to
see
that
space
actually
be
able
to
utilize
every
single
inch
of
it
for
our
young
people.
The
organization,
as
you
heard
earlier,
serves
thousands
of
young
people
it
has
for
over
50
years.
So
it
has
longevity
they
had
approve
of
an
industry
to
move
forward.
This
kind
of
organization
is
the
kind
that
we
need
in
all
our
communities.
It's
the
kind
that
makes
our
neighborhoods
in
our
city
stronger.
D
I,
want
to
congratulate
Alex
and
the
board
for
buying
this
building,
investing
you'll
love
and
your
energy,
your
sweat
and
I'm
sure
some
tears
in
this
building.
This
building
has
and
will
continue
to
change
lives.
It's
also
a
beautiful
piece
of
this
neighborhood.
It
was
built
the
same
year
as
family
park
was
1912.
This
building-
and
you
think
about
this
neighborhood
and
what's
happened.
I
was
telling
stories
before
there
was
a
gentleman
who
was
a
state
representative.
D
His
name
was
Kevin
Fitzgerald
and
he
was
one
of
my
mentors
as
a
state
representative,
and
you
know
I
know
if
he
would
hear
today
and
he
was
in
that
building.
So
he
was
with
us
today.
I
know
that
he's
a
big
smile
on
his
face
today,
because
he
was
about
diversity.
He
was
about
young
people
hears
about
creating
opportunities
and
that's
what
this
neighbor
here
is
all
about.
This
investment
is
$850,000
to
restore
and
improve
the
building.
It's
not
the
whole
thing.
They
still
gotta
raise
more
money,
so
we
got
to
work
together.
D
Investing
in
this
building
will
free
up
plenty
of
space
in
this
organ
is,
but
we
here
today
really
to
talk
about
an
incredible
program,
an
incredible
opportunity.
It
was
presented
by
the
voters
in
Boston
in
2016
in
the
community
Preservation
Act.
The
community
reservation
act
is
about
connecting
the
past,
strengthen
the
present
and
then
launching
unlocking
the
future
of
communities.
D
A
lot
of
activists
here
today
made
this
possible
that
we
passed
this
piece
of
not
legislation
but
passed
this
on
the
ballot
in
2001,
the
CPA
went
to
the
ballot
in
Boston
and
it
lost
57
to
43%
in
2016.
It
did
we
did
it
differently.
We
saw
that
we
formed
a
very
different,
not
a
very
different,
but
a
different
type
of
coalition.
With
many
people,
we
talked
about
voters
and
opportunities.
D
So
on.
Thank
you
for
being
here
today,
but
these
these
investments,
the
beauty
about
this
investment.
It's
gonna
come
every
single
year
and
organizations
like
this
one
that
have
an
executive
director
like
Alex
that
have
a
dream
and
a
mission
like
you
do
have
an
opportunity
to
be
able
to
access
funds
to
be
able
to
fulfill
your
dreams
and
that's
something.
That's
really
important.
We're
gonna
continue
to
work
together.
D
It
passed
unanimously
in
the
House
of
Representatives,
so
I
want
to
give
a
special
thank
you
to
speak
about
the
Leo
and
Aaron
Michael.
It's
who's,
a
boston
state
rep
that
was
able
to
get
that
money
here
and
it's
important
for
us
that
we
continue
to
fight
that
project
and
the
project
that
we
talked
about
is
not
just
happening
here
in
boston
is
happening,
170,
different
cities
and
towns
across
the
Commonwealth
of
Massachusetts,
and
it's
important
for
us
to
work
together
and
as
mayor's,
we
often
work
together
a
whole
host
of
issues
with
city
councilors.
D
E
If
that
is
true
here
in
Mission
Hill
as
much
as
it
as
it
is
in
my
city,
East
Hampton
across
the
state,
CPA
funds
have
fueled
the
creation
of
over
15,000,
affordable
housing
units
since
adopting
I
know
since
adopting
CPA
in
2001
in
East
Hampton,
we
have
cultivated
and
sustained
smart
local
growth
with
CPA,
affordable
housing
dollars.
These
dollars
are
well
spent
twice
over
one
to
increase
our
housing
stock,
but
also
to
add
key
local
jobs
with
the
decreasing
match.
E
My
city
finds
itself
in
the
same
place
as
many
other
cities
across
the
Commonwealth,
including
Boston
too
few
housing
units
available
whew
in
production
and
too
few
ways
to
address
the
shortage.
Very
specifically
the
CPA
dollars
we
once
used
to
add
affordable
units
and
home
ownership.
Incentives
are
no
longer
available
due
to
outdated
funding
mechanisms.
The
addition
to
affordable
housing
units
are
slowing
down
as
cpa
fund
and
their
matching
are
decreasing
the
tools.
The
incentives
at
East
Hampton
once
had
to
diversify
and
grow
are
no
longer
available.
E
We
literally
have
no
housing
units
and
our
property
prices
similar
to
Boston
are
rising.
We
have
a
strong
expectation
that
those
prices
will
rise
and
we
have
little
to
do
to
add
key
housing
units,
so
everyone
can
enjoy
a
safe
place
and
clean
place
to
live.
Our
starter
homes
now
sell
for
listing
price
plus
cash
and
that
locks
out
our
first-time
homebuyers
as
well
as
folks
who
want
to
move
to
East
Hampton
and
work
in
the
place
that
they
find
to
be
best
for
the
families.
E
The
local
economic
gains
that
East
Hampton
is
seeing
now
are
only
sustainable
with
more
affordable
housing
and
local
jobs.
I
refuse
to
accept
the
Department
of
Revenue's
projection
of
11%
CP
Matt,
a
CPA
match
to
local
dollars
needs
to
become
fact
to
be
clear.
The
fiscal
year
20
budget,
passed
by
the
House
of
Representatives
that
infuses
the
CPA
trust
fund
immediately
bolsters
economies
across
the
state.
E
In
addition
to
the
elected
officials
and
advocates
here
today,
I
stand
with
the
citizen,
housing
and
Planning
Association
the
Massachusetts,
affordable
housing,
Alliance
and
the
preservation
for
affordable
housing
and
endorsing
the
houses,
modernization
of
the
CPA
trust
funding
mechanism.
This
solution
gives
communities
across
the
state
the
power
to
address
our
housing
crisis
right
now
and
not
wait.
E
I
want
to
thank
Speaker
DeLeo
chairman
Nicolette's
Easthampton
state
representative
Daniel
Carey,
and
the
entire
House
of
Representatives,
for
including
support
for
CPA
in
this
year's
House
budget
is
investment
needed
to
make
sure
Massachusetts
continues
to
grow
in
a
way
where
more
of
our
residents
can
benefit
from
our
successes.
Thank
you
very
much.
A
Thank
you
so
much
mayor
for
your
leadership
and
also
for
being
here
today,
as
both
mayor
spoke
about.
This
is
good
investments
not
only
for
the
historic
preservation
in
the
parks
in
the
OU
of
open
space
and
the
affordable
housing,
but
also
because
it
creates
great
jobs
here
representing
the
metro,
Boston
Trades
Council
is
Yasmani
Santiago.
F
F
F
Having
a
good
job
to
provide
things,
they
deserve
a
good
home
access
to
clean
parks,
a
chance
to
make
friends
and
be
part
of
the
community
and
so
much
more
I'm
doing
whatever
I
ever
thought.
I
would
be
able
to
do
growing
up,
I'm
saving
money
to
buy
a
house,
that's
investing
in
each
other.
That's
what
it
can
do.
The
Community
Preservation
Act.
F
The
benefits
of
the
Community
Preservation
Act
will
go
further
than
an
investment
in
our
parks
and
housing.
It's
an
investment
in
our
community
and
every
person
who
lives
in
it.
That's
why
it's
important
to
work
to
make
sure
that
it's
the
best
Community
Preservation
Act
possible
I'm,
proud
to
live
in
the
city
where
we
care
about
each
other,
where
we
act
collectively
and
give
every
person
a
chance
to
live,
fair,
healthy
and
sustainable
lives.
F
The
Community,
Preservation
Act
isn't
just
a
good
idea.
It's
a
great
idea,
it's
good
for
all
of
us,
our
neighbors
teammates
and
coworkers
I'm
living
proof
of
it,
and
that's
why
it's
important
that
we
fund
it
the
right
way
so,
on
behalf
of
tens
of
thousands
of
families
in
the
building
trades.
We're
here
to
say,
thank
you
to
everyone.
Thank
you.
Thank
you.
F
We're
going
to
be
here
every
step
of
the
way
with
you.
On
a
personal
note,
mr.
mayor
Marty
Walsh,
thank
you
for
all
that
you
do
for
the
city
you
give
me,
and
so
many
others
a
chance
to
support
our
families,
we're
working
every
day
to
help
create
more
opportunities
and
good
homes.
Good
jobs
for
everyone
in
our
community
again,
thank
you
man.
A
Thank
you
so
much
Manny
as
Manny
reminds
us.
There
are
people
behind
the
Community
Preservation
Act
and
that's
what
we're
doing
when
we
expand
this
funding,
we're
protecting
people,
we're
not
just
protecting
buildings,
we're
protecting
the
stories
in
those
buildings
and
we're
protecting
the
culture,
the
identity
of
our
population
and
it's
important
to
tell
those
stories
not
only
tell
those
stories
verbally
at
the
stage,
but
also
through
song
and
through
arts
and
activities
here,
reminding
you
of
the
other
important
work
that
Sociedad
latina
does
is
Raquel
Navarro
who's
gonna
treat
us
to
a
song.
G
Well,
good
evening:
everyone
I
hope
you
guys
are
doing
well
considering
it
is
cold.
I'm.
Sorry,
please
bear
with
each
other
if
anything
get
closer
to
each
other.
The
more
the
merrier
I
will
be
performing
an
acapella
piece,
se
llaman
contigo
and
la
distancia.
For
my
Spanish
speakers,
yeah
tu,
sabe
SI,
no
lo,
siento
I
hope
you
guys
enjoy
feel
free
to
close
your
eyes,
breathe
with
me
and
just
let
my
voice
take
you
somewhere
else.
H
B
A
Raquel
said
she
was
gonna:
have
her
voice?
Take
us
someplace
else
when
she's
singing
I
don't
want
to
go
anywhere
else.
That's
what
you
do
when
the
state
invest
in
Community
Preservation
Act.
It
invests
in
protecting
voices
like
that.
This
is
the
work
of
Sociedad
latina
and
they
need
spaces
to
continue.
This
work
here
representing
Sociedad
ladina,
is
their
amazing
executive
director,
Alex,
Oliver
Davila.
I
I'm
sinking
to
the
ground,
so
I
just
want
to
say
thank
you
first
to
Mayor
Walsh
for
joining
us
today,
here
in
Mission
Hill,
and
for
providing
such
an
important
award
towards
the
renovation
of
our
building.
I
also
want
to
thank
councillor
Campbell
for
being
here.
We
met
early
on
and
she
was
a
supporter
as
well
and
then
also
thank
our
city,
councilor
Josh
cecum,
who
is
the
chair
of
our
capital
campaign
and
has
been
with
Sociedad
when
we
first
started
to
go
out
there
and
ask
for
dollars
from
our
institution.
I
I
want
to
thank
the
board
members
that
are
here
and
I'd
like
to
just
also
thank
chief
barrows
and
also
the
CPA
committee
and
Christine
PHA
for
all
of
walking
us
through
all
of
this
to
be
able
to
get
here
today
and
also
want
to
thank
Bruce
and
Mary
Kerry
who
actually
sold
us
the
building
at
a
price
that
we
could
afford,
and
they
did
not
have
to
do
that.
So
I
want
to
recognize
them
as
well
and
I
see
a
lot
of
Mission
Hill
residents.
I
Thank
you
so
much
for
coming
out
today
and
obviously
staff
and
youth
and
the
fearless
Board
of
Sociedad
latina.
So
this
year,
Sociedad
latina
is
actually
celebrating
our
fiftieth
anniversary
as
a
second
home
for
Latino,
youth
and
families
in
Boston.
It's
a
really
exciting
time
for
us.
We
actually
started
out
in
1968
in
South
Boston,
interesting
time
and
place
as
a
gathering
at
community
space
for
the
newly
arrived
Puerto
Ricans
and
we
have
since
expanded
and
obviously
work
with
the
entire
Latino
community.
I
I
When
we
first
moved
here,
we
were
actually
housed
by
the
Tobin
community
center
and
we
paid
just
$1
in
rent
per
year.
I,
don't
know
what
went
wrong
and
who
negotiated
the
deal
to
move
out,
but
but
we're
grateful
we're
grateful.
We
love
our
space.
Obviously,
in
the
past
several
years
since
2011,
we
have
grown
from
working
with
2,000
young
people
to
working
with
5,000
youth
and
families
annually.
I
Sociedad
latina
has
been
honored
to
remain
a
steadfast
resource
for
Boston's
Latino
communities
over
the
last
five
decades,
and
we
are
proud
of
the
resilience
and
hope
our
youth
and
families
have
shown
and
continue
to
show
as
different
challenges
have
emerged,
but
to
give
our
youth
the
support
and
guidance
they
need
and
that
they
deserve.
We
recognize
that
we
must
invest
in
improve
space
for
our
programs
and
operations.
That's
why
this
award
from
the
mayor
and
the
Community
Preservation
Committee
are
so
important.
I
It
will
allow
Sociedad
latina
to
repair
the
historically
and
culturally
significant
features
of
our
building,
while
upgrading
all
internal
spaces
for
our
youth
and
families,
and
it
will
mean
that
when
you're
on
one
side
of
the
building,
you're
not
freezing
on
the
other
side,
you're
like
sweating
and
like
taking
off
your
clothes,
you
won't
like
fall
in
between
the
cracks
like
I
did
today.
In
my
heels
of
the
wooden
floors
and
I
could
go
on
and
on
with
the
list,
as
our
landmark
organization
turns
50,
these
renovations
will
do
more
than
just
beautify
the
community.
I
They
will
also
transform
the
programs
were
able
to
provide,
make
the
building
totally
accessible.
So
all
young
people
can
come
to
our
building
and
energy-efficient
I'm
very
excited
about
the
solar
panels,
and
so
that
will
help
us
to
lower
our
operating
costs.
Like
China
are
one
of
our
Lum
died
that
you
heard
from
the
kicked
off
the
event.
I
I
am
looking
forward
to
the
new
music
and
performance
based
on
our
first
floor
I'm,
looking
forward
to
not
having
people
stand
outside
the
building
or
up
the
stairs,
because
we
will
actually
have
space
for
our
young
people
to
perform
and
have
their
families
watch
them.
I
am
really
excited
about
our
steam
lab,
where
youth
can
work
on
digital
storytelling,
new
media
and
other
interdisciplinary
projects.
I
For
those
of
you.
That
know
me
really
well.
You
know
that
my
heart
is
in
community.
Organizing
and
engagement
I
started
out
as
a
community.
Organizer
and
I
have
to
just
stop
here,
even
though
it's
not
in
my
speech
and
say
that
I
do
feel
this
spirit
of
representative
kevin
fitzgerald.
Who
was
a
mentor
to
me
as
well,
and
we
actually
met
in
this
building.
He
helped
me
to
get
my
first
job.
I
I
didn't
have
to
have
like
five
jobs
and
cobbled
together
and
pay
for
health
insurance
and
all
that-
and
he
was
a
big
supporter
and
it's
interesting
I
met
him
worked
in
his
summer
camp
in
Mission,
Hill,
Mission
Possible.
That's
how
I
started
out
and
where
I
learned
that
I
loved
working
with
young
people
and
Here
I
am
all
these
years
later
back
in
Mission
Hills.
So
anyway,
I
just
had
to
say
that,
because
he
is
with
us
in
spirit
today
and
I.
Thank
him.
I
So
my
heart
is
in
community
organizing
and
engagement,
so
I
know
that
our
youth
will
share
their
powerful
messages
and
ideas
for
the
city
with
these
tools
in
the
renovated
building,
we'll
also
be
able
to
serve
many
more
youth
and
families,
which
will
mean
that
we
can
build
stronger
relationships
and
support
them
to
achieve
more
of
their
goals.
Boston's
future
is
closely
connected
to
the
future
of
our
Latino
community.
In
this
space
will
ensure
that
many
more
youth
and
families
are
prepared
to
lead
healthy
and
successful
lives.
I
We
invite
everyone
here
to
visit
our
website
to
learn
more
about
all
of
the
exciting
things
happening
at
Sociedad
latina
today
and
over
the
next
year,
and
thank
you
again
to
the
mayor
and
Community
Preservation
Committee
for
recommending
this
award
to
Sociedad
latina
and
giving
us
the
opportunity
to
start
our
next
50
years
with
a
beautiful
new
building.
Thank
you.
A
Thank
you
so
much
so
at
this
time
the
mayor
is
actually
going
to
present
the
cheque
to
associate
dad
latina.
So
if
I
could
have
all
the
elected
officials
and
the
speakers
also
join,
if
I
could
have
the
children
of
Sociedad
latina
come
up
and
join
us
for
the
pit
row
as
well.
That
would
be
fantastic.
I
want
to
thank
all
the
advocacy
groups
that
came
out.
