At the Bruce Bolling Building in Roxbury, Mayor Walsh thanks Greg O'Brien, New England Division Manager at Wells Fargo, who awards a substantial grant to LEAF, Local Enterprise Assistance Fund, which supports businesses owned by women and people of color in the city.

I

managing
director

leaf

I
manage
our
technical
assistance
program
for
small
businesses
leaf
is
a
community
development,
financial
institution
and
a
nonprofit
organization.

goal
is
the
promotion
of
human
and
economic
development,
and
we
do
that
by
providing
financing
and
development
packages
and
services
to
cooperatives
and
social
purpose
ventures
that
create
and
save
jobs
for
low-income
people,

an

teach
entrepreneurship
at
Northeastern

I've
always
adopted
this
free-flowing

that
means

business
owners

Boston
for
over
a
year
now,
during
that
time,
leaf

served
over
40
small
businesses
on
diverse
owners
in
Boston,
many
of
which,
through

wonderful
partners

the
Commonwealth
kitchen
and
Dudley
Street,
never
initiative.

program

we
are
celebrating

is
a
purposeful
initiative

Wells

aligns

our
mission

Community
and
Economic

this
program
will
leverage

Business
Administration
and
I
would
like

response
to
this

of

of
the
mayor
published

wonderful
resource,

businesses
in
Boston,
and
they
need
for
the
needs
that
they
have,
and
so
this
also
has
been
a
wonderful
tool,
guiding
our
words
the
engineer.

are
very
grateful
to
the
office
of
economic
development
for
the
city
of
Boston.

drove

business

developed
a
process
that
does
not
have
to
be

know

flower
doesn't
have
to
be
scalding.
So
this
shortened,
the
production
and
and
I
said

thought
he
was
going
to
just
introduce
me

one
store
and
then
he
said,

excited

we

get

always
come
with
the

buyers.

name

Jackson
from
one
of
the
founders
and
honors
a
fresh
regeneration.
We
are
a
catering
company,
a
food
truck
and
a
cafe.
We
started
fresh
food
generation
two
years
ago,
we're
in
our
third
year
now
as
a
small
business,
and
our
mission
was
to
get
healthy,
affordable
food
options
into
low-income,
their
areas
of
Boston,
specifically
Roxbury,
Dorchester
and
Matapan.
The
cafe
we
have
is
in
a
community
health
center
in
Dorchester
Byfield
corner
at
the
dot
house
health
center.

The
food
truck
goes
downtown
three
days
a
week,
Monday
Wednesday
Thursday
on
the
Greenway,
if
you're
ever
down
that
way
and
the
catering
that
we
do
is
anywhere
inside
128.
So
we
keep
very
busy.
We
have
a
five
full
time
staff
right
now
running
all
three
operations,
including
ourselves.
So
that's
a
little
bit
about
what
we
do
and
then
the
last
thing,
I
would
say,
is
we're
very
committed
to
local
food
and
local
sourcing,
as
well
as
local,
hiring
and
job
training.

So
I
would
say
about
forty
to
fifty
percent
of
the
food
that
you're
eating
from
us
today
is
all
locally
sourced,
and
so,
when
you
eat,
you
know
that
you're
also
helping
local
farmers,
the
earth,
the
planet
and
local
residents
within
these
neighborhoods
and
I'm,
going
to
hand
it
over
to
Sandra
to
talk
about
how
we
got
to
where
we
are
now
and
how
we
wouldn't
have
been
able
to
get
there
without
the
Lee
fund
and
strong
community
supporters
as
well.
Yes,.

So,
as
Jackson
mentioned,
we
are
entering
our
third
year
of
business
at
the
end
of
our
second
year,
we
realize
great
we're
having
all
this
impact.
We're
improving
access
to
community
health
were
creating
jobs,
but
we're
financially
strapped
as
a
company
and
it's
time
for
us
to
do
some
fundraising
and
get
some
investors
if
we
want
to
continue
in
grow
as
a
company
and
expand
our
impact.
So
we
started
the
process
of
securing
financing.

It
turns
out.
That
is
extremely
hard.
There
are
lots
of
barriers
to
accessing
capital
and
I
won't
go
through
the
long
list,
but
it
was
definitely
one
of
the
hardest
experiences
that
I
think
both
of
us
have
gone
through
and
it
came
to
a
point
where
we
decided.
If
we
can't
get
the
financing,
we
need
to
succeed
as
a
business,
it's
time
to
close
shop,
and
so
that
would
have
meant
you
know
our
employees
would
have
had
to
find
alternative
employment.
Our
customers
would
have
had
to
go
somewhere
else.

So
through
this
process
we
met
Amin
through
the
leaf
fund.
He
was
coming
to
Commonwealth
kitchen.
We
started
meeting
with
him
about
two
to
five
hours
per
week.
Amin
was
very
hands-on
with
us.
He
read
our
100
page
business
plan,
actually
I
think
he's
the
only
one
to
read
it
besides
our
mothers
and
he
critiqued
it,
and
he
forced
us
to
think
diligently
about
how
we
could
be
a
better
business,
how
we
could
increase
our
average
customer
catering
size
from
20
people
to
75
people.

He
looked
over
our
projections.
He
questioned
them
and
asked
them
to
ask
us
to
revise
it
and
redo
it.
He
also
spoke
to
our
investors
and
said:
hey
guys,
you
would
be
really
silly
to
pass
up
on
these
two
individuals
and
this
business,
because
what
they're
doing
is
real
and
they
have
the
capital
and
jobs
to
prove
it.
He
also
helped
us
with
our
presentation,
which
was
great
because
it
turns
out.
We
didn't
really
know
what
we
were
doing.
I
thought
we
did,
but
Amin
was
very
helpful
in
getting
us
to
revise
it.

Think
I'll,
just
I
wanted
to
do
to
do
a
lot
of
unpacking
up
our
program
for
you
guys,
but
instead
of
getting
into
the
micro
I
just
want
to
give
some
highlights
and
then
and
then
hand
it
off

it's
possible
to
listen
to
the
business
owners
we
spoke
today
and
not
get
a
sense,
or
at
least
a
very
sharp
and
appreciation
of
the
hard
work
that
goes
into
their
into
their
businesses,
the
commitments
that
they
put
into
it.

just
very
such
immense,
creative
energy
and
really
it's
only
matched
by
the
passion
they
have
for
the
parking,
the
service
and
for
their
mission,
which
is
very
important
for
every
business.
In
my
intrapreneurship
classes,
I
always
push
the
students
and
the
groups
always
solve.
What's
your
mission,
why
are
you
in
business
and
it's
an
eye-opener
for
a
lot
of
grilling
and
I?
Think
Reed,
updated,
very
well.
Pac
sit
alone
does
not
make
the
business
successful
it's
one
of
the
key
ingredients,
but
you
need
something
else.

Many
of
the
businesses
I
speak
with
you
know
say
we
can
deal
with
our
operations.
We
can
deal
with
our
sales.
We
can
deal
with
our
customers
with
our
suppliers,
but
we
need
to
help
organizing
the
business
around
healthy
practices.
We
can't
be
strapped
for
cash
permanently,
it's
just
a
source
of
stress
and
you
know
I
think
being
an
educator.
You
can't
for
me
for
putting
some
statistics
in
front
of
you.
So
let's
see
I
promise.

There
won't
be
a
lot
of
that,
but
basically
so
here
I'm
testing
your
eyesight,
but
at
the
same
time
I
just
want
to
show
you.
These
are
hours
per
week
worked
for
small
businesses
and
what
you're
looking
at
here
is
60
Plus,
which
is
19%
50/50
on
hours,

and
then
looking
for
Yahoo.
So
the
majority
of
small
business
owners
don't
know
what
a
40-hour
Work
Week
looks
like
right
for
entrepreneurs,
it's
even
worse,
you're.

Looking
at
you
know
the
majority
of

pipe
that
doesn't
know
what
a
40-hour
Work
Week
looks
like
so
here
I'm
just
kind
of
highlighting
the
the
hours,
but
you
can
see
that
the
majority
of
the
businesses
that
we
deal
with
40
hours
to
think
doesn't
work
for
them.
The
work
group,
their
businesses,
require
way
too
much
attention
and
you
can
imagine
the
personal
cost
that
comes
with
that.

can
imagine
the
the
family
culture
comes
with
that
the
community,
the
civic
engagement
that
has
to
take
the
backseat-
and
you
know-
and
this
all
goes
into
the
fabric
of
creating
a
good
business
community.
You
can
sacrifice
all
of
those
things
just
so
that
you
can.
You
can
thread
water,
so
this
is
kind
of
where
we
come
in
to
alleviate
some
of
that
stress
and
we
provide
the
tools
that
you
would
expect.
Any
large
will
run
company
to
have
you
know.

Sometimes
it
takes
just
a
small
nudge,
some
advice
from
coaching
to
get
a
business
in
the
right
direction.
You
know
recut
business,
probably
good
case
of
that
you
know.
Sometimes
we
have
to
roll
up
our
sleeves
and
start
manufacturing
the
tools
themselves,
budgeting
tools,
financial
budgeting
sales,
budget,
commercial
strategy,
cost
structure,
analysis,
you
know
benchmarks.
You
said
you
were
going
to
sell
this.
You
solve
less.
What
happened?
You
sold
more,
what
happened.
So
these
are
just
conversations
you
need
to
have
with
the
business
owners
and
they're
likely
I'm
not
going
to
have
them
with
themselves.

it
helps
you
have
somebody
there.
Coach
and
advice
sometimes
were
just
a
sounding
board.
You
know
we
are
looking
into
this
opportunity.
What
do
you
think
it
is
incredibly
helpful
to
have
a
third
party,
an
outsider.
Looking
at
this
and
saying
or
saying
this
sounds
very
exciting.
You
know
when
we
can't
help
with
any
topics.

You
have
a
lot
of
businesses
that
require
capital
for
a
number
of
reasons
to
stabilize
to
expand,
and
you
have
a
number
of
investors
and
there's
capital
they're
available
to
go
towards
legitimate
businesses,
sustainable
businesses
and
what
we
do
is
try
to
remove
the
friction
in
the
process
in
such
a
way
that
the
capital
flows
to
the
businesses-
and
you
know-
and
it
takes
work,
but
it's
also
necessary
work.
So
access
to
capital
is
essential
to
the
solution,
and
you
know
this.

started
our
program
as
advisors
only
and
with
this
with
this
award
that
we
have
received
from
Wells
Fargo.
Now
we're
not
only
an
expanded
advisor
of
service,
but
we
can
also
begin
to
provide
some
of
that
capital
and
make
that
available
to
the
businesses
and
we
provide
a
comprehensive
solution
for
for
our
small
business
owners.
So
in
all
that
note,
I'd
like
to

the

the

appreciate
some
of
the
friction
that
you
do
an
awesome,
awesome
organization.

I
don't
like
to
make
these
things
an
infomercial,
but
our
brand
isn't
always
on
brands
very
well-known
but
isn't
as
well-known,
sometimes
in
cities
like
Boston,
although
you
know
I'm
from
here
so
if
I
could
just
bear
with
me
for
a
minute,
you
know:
Wells
Fargo
is
one
of
the
largest
financial
institutions
in
the
country.
It
is
one
of
the
most
recognizable
brands
in
our
industry,
but
in
Boston
a
lot
of
times
we're
not
that
well-known
and
it's
really
because
we
don't
have
a
retail
presence,
that's
a
complicated
answer.

If
you
want
to
know
why
so
I
won't
get
into
that
now.
But
but
it's
you
know,
sometimes
a
well-kept
secret
and
people
usually
surprise
when
I
share
with
them
that
we
now
have.
After
ten
years
of
double-digit
growth
in
the
city,
we
now
have
800
employees
or
team
members
in
Boston
alone
and
in
New
England.

We
have
one
3,000
team
members
and
again
seems
to
be
for
a
lot
of
folks,
a
well-kept
secret,
and
you
know
the
other
question
I
get
all
the
time
is,
you
know,
isn't
Wells
Fargo,
headquartered
in
California
in
San
Francisco,
and
the
answer
is
yes,
all
those
a
lot
of
local
roots
in
New,
England,
Henry
Wells
was
from
Rutland
Vermont,
all
those
beautiful
stagecoach
who
you
see
with
built
in
in
Concord
New
Hampshire.
So
it
was
a
lot
of
local
history.

But
at
the
same
time,
do
you
think
about
the
800
team
members
that
are
here
in
Boston?
Most
of
them
like
me,
they're,
local,
right
and
I
know.
If
the
mayor
remember,
if
I
was
remember,
the
Harley
Hospital
was
born
the
Harley
Hospital
in
Dorchester,
not
a
hundred
years
ago,
but
a
few
years
ago,
and
both
my
parents
grew
up
in
Boston,
my
dad
ran
a
family
business
with
his
family
in
boss.

My
mother
was
a
long
time
schoolteacher
in
the
city
of
Boston,
very
proud
of
the
hard
work
that
that
she
did
in
both
Roxbury
and
assault,
Boston
and-
and
so
it's
part
of
our
roots
in
it.
But
it's
part
of
the
company's
roots
as
well,
and
that's
why
we're
passionate
about
doing
some
of
the
things
that
we're
doing?

Maybe
this
impact
is
terrific
right
and,
if
you
think,
of
a
mission
of
Wells
Fargo,
it
starts
locally
and
we
you
know
we
strive
to
really
make
a
leading
impact
both
socially
economically
and
environmentally,
and
we
do
that
through
our
operations,
our
business
practices,
philanthropy
and,
most
importantly,
through
community
engagements
and
again,
as
we
think
of
community
engagement,
we
think
of
it
as
a
as
a
local
enterprise,
not
a
corporate
enterprise.

nice
thing
about
that.

loan

the
Wells

diverse
community
capital
program
funds

support,

long-standing

assistance
and
lending
to
small
business
owners.
We
think
this
works
so
important
because
it's
really
those
business
owners
are
the
fabric
of
many
of
the
neighborhoods
that
were
we're
trying
to
support
and
they
live
in
those
neighborhoods.
They
work
in
those
neighborhoods
and
they
create
well
from
those
neighborhoods
and
giving
back
to
those
low
income.

Corrado
mentioned
earlier
specific
needs
around
diverse
small
businesses
and
it's
very
complicated
today
between
the
regulatory
environment,
the
organization
of
the
banks,
even
the
small
community
banks,
it's
real
hard
for
small
businesses
to
come
and
get
traditional
bank
loans,
as
sounds
like
you
all
have
witnessed
firsthand
or
experienced
firsthand,
and-
and
you
know
the
the
leaf
was
selected
among
70
CDFIs-
that
went
through
the
application
process.
Ultimately,
14
14
metro
markets
were
granted.
We've
chosen
to
receive
funding
you
think
about
the
competition
it
was
it
was.

It
was
tough
in
Jurado
and
his
team
distinguished
themselves
the
application
process
for
their
long
track
record
of
30
years,
including
I,
hope
my
of
my
numbers
right
here.
More
than
100
million
nationally
that
you've
invested
or
loan
to
the
community
and
created
more
than
more
defended
more
than
7,600
jobs.
It's
not
just
their
ability,
Department
with
leading
organizations
in
the
city
like
Common,
Wealth,
kitchen,
Dudley,
Street,
Neighborhood
initiative
and
Project
Hope,
but
it's
also
the
fact
that
we
heard
earlier
that
they
support
the
entrepreneurs
and
all
aspects
of
their
lives

you
know,
what's
important
for
a
city.
Is
your
a
lot
of
conversation
of
it
today?
It's
the
small
businesses,
that's
the
lifeblood
of
our
city.

We
talk
a
lot
about
what's
going
on
with
like
GES
of
the
world
and
that's
great,
to
bring
GE
of
Worcester
to
Boston
and
companies
like
that.
But
the
lifeblood
is,
is
in
the
40,000
businesses
that
we
have
in
our
city,
the
15
billion
dollars
in
revenue,
170,000
jobs,
citywide!
That's
really
what
we
talk
about!
That's
our
stronger
streets!
That's
our
better
neighborhood,
stronger
communities,
that's
not
stronger
neighborhoods!
We
had
an
uptick
in
violence
last
week
in
the
city
of
Boston,
and
we
were
talking
about.

The
press
is
really
obsessed
about
how
you're
going
to
make
it
better.
What
are
you
going
to
do?
How
gonna
fix
it
what's
going
on
and
really
it
comes
down
to
the
small
businesses
when
you
really
think
about
it
about
creating
opportunities,
whether
it's
for
a
mother
or
father
or
a
young
person
getting
opportunity
to
work
their
summer
job?
That's
those
the
lifeblood
of
about
many
of
our
neighborhoods,
the
small
businesses.
That's
why
we
created
the
office
of
small
business
development
in
within
economic
development.
That's
why
we
created.

We
have
a
301
service
and
a
web
portal.
Small
small
businesses
deserve
and
in
the
city
of
Boston,
hopefully
get
the
same
attention
as
a
fortune.
500
company
would
it's
especially
true
I
think
for
people
who
own
their
business
in
our
city
and
when
you
think
about
opportunities,
women
and
people
of
color
entrepreneurs
in
our
city.
The
numbers
are
high
and
we
need
to
continue
to
make
sure
that
we
create
opportunities
and
pathways
into
city
government.
So
we
can
create
opportunities
for
the
future.

Is
it's
something
that's
really
important
for
us
here,
you're
in
a
space
that
four
years
ago
wasn't
even
on
the
blip
on
the
radar
The
Rock's
Roxbury,
Innovation
Center.
When
we
came
in
as
mayor,
we
started
thinking
about.
We
start
talking
about
innovation
with
NASA
Challenge
on
the
waterfront.
We
work
done
in
the
four
point
channel
area-
and
we
say:
okay,
let's
bring
some
innovation
and
some
potential
future
innovation
to
the
Roxbury
area.
And
that's
without
this
idea
came
up.

We
launched
a
small
business
center
in
Mattapan
Carolyn
Crockett's
here
from
the
Office
of
Economic
Development,
we
put
on
an
equity
and
inclusion
agenda,
signed
an
executive
order
on
access
to
fair
contracts,
making
sure
that
people
have
opportunities
to
be
able
to
access
some
of
the
contracts
and
the
city
services
that
we
have.
We
created.
We
bought
a
start-up
to
support
a
start-up
support
system
for
women
in
veterans,
owned
businesses
in
our
city,
really
creating
opportunities
to
help
people
at
the
core
of
all
this
work
in
this
different
kinds
of
businesses
as
technical
assistance.

It's
the
nuts
and
bolts
of
the
modern
business
air,
and
for
that
we
are
partly
with
the
capacity
and
entrepreneur
in
enterprise
to
make
real
substantive
differences.
That's
where
the
lease
comes
in
I'll,
leave,
support
and
relationship
with
the
city
of
Boston
as
a
community
development.
Financial
institution
leave,
puts
the
power
of
Finance
to
work
with
the
underdog.
They
are
active,
a
contract
city-
as
you
heard
many
times
from
this
from
this
microphone
from
Dorchester
to
Roxbury
Mattapan,
to
eesti,
to
Austin
right.

We're
especially
pleased
that
leaf
is
offering
training
for
worker
cooperatives
and
in
keeping
with
the
wealth
in
our
community,
it
reduces
inequality
and
that's
something
that
we
have
to
continue
to
move
forward
on
as
well.
So
I
congratulate
leaf
on
this
grant
from
Wells
Fargo
the
diverse
community
capital
program.
It's
certainly
well
deserved.

our

businesses

you've
helped
in
the

that

to

in
the

our

they

city

Boston

we're
living
in
interesting
times,
we're
probably
at
one
of

greatest
growth
spurts

history

have
more
development
than
any
other
time.
The
insurer,
our
city,
we're
building
more
housing
than
any
other
time
in
history,
our
city,
but
yet
we
still
have
a
big
economic
inconsistencies
in
our
city
in
our
neighborhoods
and
they've
enabled
their
whirring.

in
the
dudley
area
in
doctor
street
depth
in
evans
corner
in
Dorchester,
as
you
move
down,
there
is
a
difference
and
I
know
that
a
lot
of
the
hard
work
of
the
storm
of
people,
whether
you're
an
entrepreneur
and
starting
a
business
out
and
sticking
to
it
or
you're.
Somebody
who
works
in
a
shop
we're
just
going
to
continue
to
move
forward.
So
