From YouTube: Mayor on Main: Boston Main Streets Awards 2018: Day 3
Description
Mayor Walsh is taking the 2018 Main Streets Awards on the road to the neighborhoods! Visiting locally owned small businesses in Roxbury, Egleston Square, and Jamaica Plain, Mayor Walsh honors this year's awardees for their outstanding work and contributions to their neighborhoods.
A
A
The
heart
and
soul
of
Roxbury-
and
we
hope
to
be
showing
you
more
examples
of
that
with
a
new
cultural
district,
with
lots
of
new
restaurants
that
that
show
every
culture
in
the
world
we
just
had
to
do
Ethiopia
one.
We
have
a
soul,
food,
one
soleal
and
we
have
a
golden
crust.
A
Jamaican
went
opening
very
very
soon,
so
all
of
the
things
that
we've
done
in
Dudley
we've
had
we've
done
so
much
work.
We
still.
C
C
But
they
do
a
lot
of
work.
They
prepare
a
lot
of
stuff
remapping
on
social
banking,
Street
workers
for
all
your
great
work,
I
want
to
thank
John,
barrows,
chief
economic
development,
the
city
of
Boston
responsible
for
all
the
big
developed
we
see
downtown
and
all
the
swamp
and
development
was
seeing
in
neighborhoods
and
all
the
small
businesses
like
we're
standing
in
today,
so
I
want
to
thank
John
and
his
team
for
his
great
work.
C
C
Keep
it
up
all
right,
but
let
me
just
get
to
get
to
the
while
we
get
today,
as
I
said,
enjoys
talked
about
this
a
minute
ago.
Joyce
has
been
working
hard
for
many
many
many
years,
along
with
a
lot
of
other
people
here
in
Dudley
to
make
sure
that
the
business
community
takes
off
and
that
the
services
in
this
community
and
that
we
give
the
support
of
that
community.
C
If
we
didn't
have
Joyce
in
the
board
at
Main
streets,
this
would
be
a
very
different
square
and
if
you
think
about
a
Dudley
square
in
the
last
10
years,
it's
gone
through
a
transformation
and
we're
going
to
continue
to
make
sure
that
it
continues
to
move
forward
in
a
positive
way
to
create
opportunities.
The
way
you
do
that
is
having
good
businesses
in
the
community
and
good
people
in
the
neighborhood
and
the
business
of
the
year
for
the
Dudley
Main
Street
is
Costello
wine
and
liquor.
C
Not
only
are
not
only
are
they
have
business
in
the
community,
but
they
also
give
back
to
the
community,
and
today,
what's
making
today's
special
is
we
have
water
and
we
have
food
and
we
have
all
the
celebration
and
I
also
want
to
thank
you
for
for
all
that
you
do
for
our
community
their
way.
Thank
you
for
your
doing.
Your
business
I
want
to
thank
you
for
being
engaged
in
Main
Street.
Someone
thank
you
for
for
making
butter
square
the
special
play
to
this.
Thank
you.
D
C
C
E
C
The
businesses
are
important,
the
Main
Street
directors
are
important,
but
what
keeps
the
blood
flowing
through
the
lines
of
Main
streets
is
the
volunteers.
People
don't
get
paid,
people
do
it,
they
go
out.
They
pick
up
trash
on
the
street.
They
set
up
for
events
and
festivals,
they
write.
Sometimes
they
write
the
grants.
Looking
for
extra
money,
they're
the
people
that
you
really
need
to
make
sure
Main
Street
was
flowing
and
this
year's
volunteer
of
the
Year
award
for
EE
is
Rosalie.
Lo,
let
me
just
tell
you
a
couple
things
about
Rosalie
since
2014.
C
She
served
on
the
promotions
and
fundraising
committees,
probably
two
of
the
hottest
communities
to
be
on,
because
you
have
to
raise
the
money
for
the
events
you
want
to
do,
but
also
push
to
make
sure
that
the
fundraising
is
there.
She
plans.
Events
develops
fundraising
resource
to
the
program,
she's
helped
Dudley
Main
Street,
produce
workshops,
including
women,
all
in
business
breakfasts,
which
is
important.
B
F
B
G
Thank
you
mayor
for
doing
this
event.
It's
nice
to
get
out
into
the
neighborhoods
I
appreciate
that,
unfortunately,
today,
because
of
the
rain,
our
business
owner
and
volunteer
of
the
year
just
started
their
summer
program,
so
they
weren't
aren't
be
able
to
make
it
Rick
and
wink.
They
are
going
to
accept.
B
C
I
want
to
thank
Courtney
as
well,
when
you
think
about
you
think
about
Chinatown
Main
streets.
One
of
the
challenges
trying
to
tell
me
she
says,
is
that
there's
a
lot
of
development
going
on
in
around
the
Chinatown
community
and
a
lot
of
the
businesses,
the
longtime
businesses
are
in
fear
of
being
displaced
and
try
and
Tommy
entries
make
sure
they
fight
to
keep
those
businesses
and
make
sure
there's
opportunity
to
keep
trying
to
town
the
way
it
has
been.
C
So
it
truly
is
a
Chinatown
and
I
want
to
thank
them
for
their
work
and
the
the
business
of
the
year.
Rick
warren
is
going
to
accept
with
the
board
president
is
C:
Mon
supermarkets,
yours
Michael,
Fang.
He
emigrated
from
China
the
open
sea
Mart
to
provide
access
for
fresh
foods
produce
and
Asian
goods,
as
you
should
think
about
a
lot
of
the
different
cultures
that
come
to
America.
That's
what
happens
in
neighborhoods,
they
open
up
the
produce
for
their
cultures
and
they
see
might
be
able
to
keep
that
going.
C
C
B
B
C
Talked
to
you
along
I'll
grab
me
in
a
minute
and
the
next
is
the
volunteer.
The
Arrowwood
Justin
Cho
he's
in
a
he's
involved
in
he's
a
freshman
in
high
school,
which,
when
you
think
about
that,
having
somebody
that
young
involved
in
the
community
is
really
important,
he
started
some
a
job
today
yeah,
so
he
couldn't
be
here
right,
he's
working
for
the
city,
so
he
couldn't
get
the
time
off.
C
H
C
But
also
involve
prior
to
that
he's
now
a
sophomore
in
college.
He
continues
to
be
proud
of
events
and
when
you
think
about
that,
he
got
involved
in
the
freshman
in
high
school
and
he's
staying
in
connected
as
a
as
a
sophomore
in
college.
It's
so
important
for
us
that
we
continue
to
build
and
cultivate
young
people
to.
Let
them
know
that
when
they
come
back
from
school
they
get
involved
their
community,
and
that
really
is
important.
So
congratulations
and
we're
going
to
prevent.
B
B
I
I
Washington
gateway,
many
streets
association,
I
joined
that
board
about
a
year
ago,
and
it's
been
taxable
to
see
how
dedicated
people
are
to
the
communities
and
how
much
they've
really
really
really
want
to
put
in
their
time
and
effort
to
make
a
difference
so
on
behalf
of
all
Washington
gateway
main
streets.
Thank
you
for
coming
out.
C
All
right,
we
have
two
little
s
here
where
I'm
gonna
start
with
the
volunteer.
The
award,
our
emcee
here,
characters
committed,
enthusiastic
board.
Member
of
the
main
streets
led
the
atmosphere,
lighting
installation
at
the
Blackstone
and
Franklin
parks
and
instrumental
in
the
2018
spring.
Small
workshops
and
I
have
to
say
Washington
gates,
Washington
Street
gateway,
Washington,
I'm,
messing
this
up
gateway,
Main
Street
has
a
very
active
board,
a
very
active
community
and
it's
led
by
a
very
active
volunteer
of
the
year.
So
congratulations.
B
B
C
Now
the
business
here
is
Capital
One
cafe
at
the
block
Capital
One
is
dedicated
to
the
south
in
community,
demonstrated
a
strong
commitment
to
a
safe,
clean,
beautiful
self
and
Laura
Roxbury
supported
supported
installation
at
Franklin,
Park
and
project
place,
and
also,
as
you
see
in
Clarks,
built
out,
the
Main
Street
is
making
sure
that
that
go
community
staying
part
of
a
neighborhood,
so
I
want
to
get
its
couple.
One
here.
J
Hi,
my
name
is
Lenny
Spencer
I'm,
actually,
the
cafe
culture
manager
for
the
Capital
One
cafe
at
8
o'clock
on
the
Towson
and
we're
super
excited
and
honored
before
this
award
humbled
as
well.
We
dedicate
ourselves
as
a
as
a
partner
in
the
community
where
we
can
give
back
and
support
a
Washington
gateway
of
Main
streets
in
the
south
end
to
make
sure
that
it's
a
safe
place
for
all
and
again
we're
totally
humbled.
And
we
thank
you
for
this
award.
C
Just
remember:
when
you're
shopping,
you
know
everyone
shops
online.
Now
everyone
goes
to
a
mall
just
give
some
business
to
your
local
businesses
they're
the
ones
that
a
mostly
family-owned
they
put
their
life
savings
on
the
line
they
employ
people
from
our
community
and
they
really
depend
upon
all
of
us
and
if
we
didn't
have
them
in
our
communities,
these
businesses
wouldn't
did
a
lot
gonna
be
if
these
storefronts
and
something
will
be
things
that
we
don't
want.
So
I
want
to
thank
you
all
for
being
here
and
thank
you
for
supporting
Main
Street.
F
E
C
C
I
want
to
thank
the
board
of
directors
here,
a
necklace
of
square
main
streets
after
their
great
work.
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you.
The
community
2013
when
I
was
campaigning
for
mayor
I
spent
a
lot
of
time
in
Echo
for
scaring.
It
was
the
part
of
the
city
that
I
saw
a
lot
of
businesses
trying
to
make
it
work
and
she'd
get
down
towards
square
more.
C
A
lot
of
businesses
had
locks
on
the
doors
and
had
buzzes
on
their
doors
and
weren't
letting
people
in,
and
when
you
come
down
here,
you
saw
a
whole
different
feel
and
I
felt
that
I
feel
it's
important,
that
we
continue
to
making
investments
in
Main
streets
both
from
the
city
standpoint,
but
also
from
the
community
standpoint.
So
thank
you
for
a
long
nice
to
be
here
today.
I
also
want
to
just
take
a
moment
to
introduce
a
few
people.
C
One
is
just
City
Councilman
O'malley's
here,
thinking
comes
from
Liz
Mallya
could
not
be
here
today,
because
she's
doing
her
job
as
a
state
rep
they're
in
session
today,
they're
in
session
on
Wednesday
and
they're
in
session
on
Thursday
and
they're.
Wrapping
up
the
state
budget
and
they're
wrapping
up
a
whole
bunch
of
other
programs,
so
Liz's
in
there.
If
the
state
helps
work
in
the
next
three
days,
for
the
people
of
Boston
in
particular
district
but
I
want
to
thank
miss.
C
Maya
too,
is
a
great
champion
in
our
city
who
believes
in
small
businesses
and
what
they're
doing
so.
Thank
you,
represented
Maya
today
we're
here
to
celebrate
a
business
of
the
year
in
Volunteers
of
the
year
here
in
engleson
Square,
to
celebrate
the
great
work
they
do
and
also
Jack
hi,
Jackson
Square
main
streets.
C
Thank
you
for
doing
that,
because
they
not
only
raised
their
family
and
helps
for
their
family.
They
also
have
an
opportunity
to
help
the
community
and
allow
other
people
that
work
for
them
to
support
a
family
as
well.
So
thank
you
to
all
the
businesses.
In
both
the
areas
I'm
gonna
have

Thank
You

keep
it
going
from
our
mayor,
Barton
J
Walsh,
it's
here
the
mayor
mentioned
was
it
when
he
was
campaigning
to
be
mayor.
He
spent
a
lot
of
time
in
it
listen
square.
What
he
didn't
say
is
since
he's
been
mayor.
He
spent
a
lot
of
time
and
ever
since
we're
getting
to
know
all
the
businesses
getting
to
meet
folks,
he
I've
spent
many
a
day
with
him.
Just
in
this
neighborhood.
He
loves
this
neighborhood.
He
knows
what
a
special
place.
It
is.
D
Thank
you,

Thank
You

Yes,
you
know
I
just
named
a
few
people
that
are
here,
we're
joined
by
John
barrows,
the
chief
economic
development
for
the
city
of
Boston,
if
Sara

the
the
chief

in
the
city
of

who
used
to
be

Main

and
we
put

John
Thank
You
Sheila
Devin
who's

we're
also
the
guy
that
I
meant
2013
and
I
knew
I
was
going
to
steal
him
from

Why
and
that's

C
The
next
is
the
volunteer
of
the
Year
award
volunteers
of
any
Main

the
heart
and

of
the
main

They're,
the
people
that
that
do
all
the
work
they're,
the
ones
that
set
up
for
the
events
they're
the
ones
who
clean
up
the
street
they're
the
ones
that
get
notification
out
and
this
year
volunteer.
C
The
award
is
the
Northeast
who
students
come
over
here
know
these
students,
the
architects,
the
architecture,
students
at
Northeastern
that
made
long-term
commitments
in
this
community
done
extensive
work
on
the
piece
guide
and
remain
involved,
and
what's
great
about
that,
is
having
young
people
from
that
go
to
college
here
in
our
city
and
they
get
a
chance
to
actually
work
in
the
neighborhood
and
see
firsthand
what
it's
like
to
do
do
business
out
here.
So
thank
you
very
much.

C
F
K
Second
out
of
three
Main
Street
districts
in
Jamaica
Plain,
we
have
two
really
great
people
that
work
with
us:
we're
right,
thankful
for
a
volunteer
on
Christina,
oh
he'll
be
coming
up
and
Nobel
Garcia
from
Loa
and
they'll
do
Cuba
and
all
the
people
that
volunteer
with
us
Echo's.
The
square
is
a
great
place
to
come
here
quite
a
bit
and
Luis
is
a
fantastic
director.
So,
thanks
for
coming
up
and
celebrating
with
us,
Thank.
C
You
Charles
and
Gerald
approached
me
about
two
months
ago
to
talk
about
the
Main
Street
National
Conference
that
they
put
in
different
cities
every
year.
Hopefully
we
can
get
everything
together
in
the
City
of
Austin
and
look
at
doing
that.
But
that's
that's
involvement,
making
sure
that
something
like
that
progress,
an
event
like
that
would
help
us
promote
all
of
our
Main
streets
and
also
put
the
rest
of
the
country
being
envious,
what's
happening
in
Boston
it's
because
of
people
like
Gerald
on
the
board
and
the
volunteers.
So
thank
you
very
much.

best
Cuban
food.
It
brings
people
from
all
backgrounds
in
the
restaurant
to
socialize.
It
truly
is
it
talks
about
our
city
truly
being
international,
and
we
are
an
international
city
made
up
of
a
lot
of
different
people
from
different
areas
and
the
fact
that
we
celebrate
people's
culture,
whether
it's
the
traditions
where
their
food
is
really
important
in
Boston,
is
special
for
that.
So
I
want
to
congratulate
you
on
this
and
I
want
to
pass
the
microphone
over
to
see
councilman
O'malley
Thank.
D
C
Now
the
ball
Judea
Christine,
Hollis
Percy,
come
up
here,
Christine
for
the
Egleston
height
heights,
where
I
Jackson
Square
made
sure
the
volunteer.
What
Christine
is
a
committed
volunteer
from
making
every
making
of
different
gadgets
for
our
tables
and
being
involved
in
setting
up
different
events?
Also
hi
Jackson,
Square
Main
Street
is
grateful
for
her
great
attitude
and
our
willingness
to
help
and
I
just
want
to
say
this.
C
In
1993,
I
was
working
on
a
mayoral
campaign
and
I
was
in
height
and
when
I
was
there
at
the
office
back,
then
there
was
grates
on
every
store.
People
were
their
work.
Restaurants.
If
there
were
restaurants
that
were
struggling,
there
was
a
lot
of
activity
on
the
streets,
the
big,
the
biggest
businesses,
where
the
the
pakis
liquor
stores.
C
When
you
think
about
what
this
Main
Street
has
done
to
a
community,
completely
transformed
it
into
a
completely
different
Main
streets,
which
means
that
the
people
who
live
there
have
so
many
more
options
in
a
positive
way.
I
want
to
thank
this
Main
Street's
for
their
incredible
work.
What
they've
done
over
the
last
20
years
in
the
city.
C
C
H
C
Sure
you
shop,
local
businesses,
make
sure
you
give
these
businesses
in
both
these
main
streets.
The
opportunity
I
know
that
a
lot
of
people
shop
online
today
you
go
to
malls,
but
as
you're
going
out
to,
if
you're
going
to
be
looking
for
something
for
your
cell
phone
rather
than
ordering
online
and
going
someplace
else
right
behind
me.
Just
show
that
is
everything
you
can
imagine,
as
you
go
up
and
down
the
street
go
shopping
for
fresh
fruits
and
meats
and
foods
and
shops
and
clothes,
and
everything
is
right
here
at
this
neighborhood.
M
My
name
is
ginger
brown
I'm,
the
executive
director
for
JP
Center,
South,
Main
streets,
I've
been
in
the
job
about
a
year.
In
fact,
I
think
the
very
first
event
I
did
was
the
mayor
on
main
and
last
year
it
was
over
in
hi,
Jackson
Square,
and
it
was
a
great
time,
my
first
time
meeting
mayor,
Marty
Walsh.
Thank
you
all
so
much
for
coming
out
today.
M
In
case
you
don't
know,
JP
Center,
South,
Main
streets
is
an
organization
that
brings
the
businesses,
the
residents
and
the
city
together
in
order
to
help
sustain
and
improve
our
particular
district
right.
Here
we
are
always
looking
for
volunteers.
We
love
to
put
on
community
events.
For
example,
this
Thursday
will
be
the
first
Thursday
Art
Walk
and
the
screen
on
the
green.
That's
right:
JP,
Center,
South,
Main
streets.
What's
that
on
Thursday
on
the
lawn
of
the
Lorne
Greene
OH
house,
we
will
be
showing
some
like
it
hot
at
7:30
p.m.
please
come
on
out.
C
Thank
You
ginger,
and
let
me
just
let
me
just
stop
by
saying
if
you,
if
you
have
any
dinner
or
you're
bored,
going
next
to
it
monumental
cupcakes
and
get
the
apple
cider
doughnut,
with
the
vanilla
frosting
on
it's
on
Willie,
Wolfe,
County,
Hudson's
here
and
then
go
over
to
chew,
screen
afterwards
get
a
drink
over
there.
It's
great
too,
it's
great
to
be
I'm
dead,
serious,
unbelievable.
So
thank
you
very
much.
C
Let
me
just
stop
by
thanking
everyone
for
coming
out
today
to
celebrate
the
business
of
the
earth
would
and
they
volunteer
here
for
Main
streets.
We
started
this
new
taking
this
on
the
road.
Last
year
we
used
to
have
these
events
at
the
Strand
Theatre.
Will
we
thank
the
businesses
and
thank
the
volunteers
and
we
tried
something
different
last
year
and
it's
been
a
huge
success
as
far
as
getting
people
in
the
community
and
having
people
stop
by
and
say
what's
going
on
and
in
talking
and
promoting
on
small
businesses.
C
So
thank
you
to
all
the
business
owners
here.
Thank
you
to
all
the
residents
here.
Thank
you
to
all
the
Main
Street
board
of
directors
and
all
the
volunteers
appreciate
all
the
work
you
do
to
make
sure
our
neighborhoods
are
strong.
I
also
want
to
thank
city
council,
mental
maladies
here
with
us
today,
who
was
proud
about
what
we're
doing
today,
all
across
T,
but
also
as
a
city
councilor,
has
been
a
very
strong
advocate
for
for
the
Main
streets
in
the
city
of
Boston,
not
just
in
his
district
or
1200
cities.
C
My
friend
and
colleague,
representative
Mallya
and
Jeffrey
Sanchez
could
be
with
us
today
because
they
vote
the
session
they're
wrapping
up
the
budget,
but
again
with
their
help
at
the
state
level
with
small
business,
has
been
a
tremendous
support
in
the
city.
So
I
want
to
thank
both
elected
officials,
Jeff
and
Liz
for
their
support
as
well.
They
couldn't
be
here,
they
said,
so.
Thank
you
to
them
in
to
all
of
you
here.
The
businesses.
Thank
you
with
what
we're
doing
here
today
is.
C
This
is
orphan
1882.
Four
years
later
it
was
the
fire
destroyed
space,
and
then
joy
has
rebuilt
her
business
steadily.
She's
won
the
green
business
award
from
the
city
of
Boston
she's,
a
role
model
within
the
community,
particularly
for
the
Jaypee
Central,
South,
Main
streets
and
I
want
to
thank
you
joyful.
D
Thank
You
Manor
keep
it
going
for
our
mayor,
Marty
Walsh,
really
moving
to
C
on
behalf
of
state
representatives,
Liz
May,
leah
and
jeff
researchers
I
have
a
resolution
from
the
House
of
Representatives.
They
couldn't
be
here
they're
in
session,
but
just
to
sort
of
underscore
how
ingrained
joy
and
fresh
air
are
in
the
community.
The
first
time
we
met
each
other
was
at
a
fundraiser
for
the
Manning
school
for
the
burger
slam.
Mayor
Walsh
was
there
as
well
and
I
said.
D
D
Here's
a
resolution
which
reads:
be
it
hereby
known
to
all
that
the
Massachusetts
House
of
Representatives
offers
its
sincerest
congratulations
to
fresh
hair
salon
in
recognition
of
your
outstanding
contribution
to
the
11th
Suffolk
District
earning
you,
the
city
of
Boston's
department
of
economic
development,
2018
business
of
the
Year
award
and
I
know
in
the
not-too-distant
future.
You
and
I
will
be
here
inaugurating
the
fresh
care
of
water
filling
station.
L
C
If
you
think
about
businesses
in
a
Main
Street,
it
really
brings
vibrancy
to
a
community
and
what's
needed
to
bring
that
vibrancy.
His
volunteers
who
work
at
the
program
and
Main
Street
budget
isn't
as
big
as
as
they
would
like,
or
probably
what
would
love
alts
millions
to
see
happen,
but
so
it
depends.
We
depend
heavily
upon
volunteers
and
volunteers
are
the
people
who
do
all
the
work
they're,
the
ones
that
set
up
before
an
event
they
break
down
after
it
met
they
clean
the
street.
